Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for antibiotic remediation in wastewater treatment owing to its environmentally benign nature, high efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, a PEDOT- NiCo(OH) 2 hybrid photocatalyst is successfully synthesized and, systematically investigated for visible-light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation. Structural engineering via optimized incorporation of bimetallic hydroxide (NiCo(OH) 2 ) into the PEDOT markedly enhances the specific surface area (∼188 m 2 g −1 ) and pore size of 5.29 nm, while significantly narrowing the optical band gap to ∼1.79 eV, enabling efficient visible light harvesting. Electrochemical analyses demonstrate a substantially reduced charge-transfer resistance and an enhanced photocurrent response for PEDOT-Ni(OH) 2 2:1 (P-NCH21), indicating accelerated interfacial charge transport and suppressed electron–hole recombination. Consequently, P-NCH21 achieves an exceptional TC removal efficiency of 97.6% within 35 min under visible-light irradiation, far outperforming P-NH and PEDOT-Ni(OH) 2 3:1 (P-NCH31), having degradation efficiencies of 67 and 92%, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirm that the generation of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide (•O 2 ⁻) and (•OH) are the reactive species that drives the photocatalytic degradation process. Furthermore, the hybrid photocatalyst exhibits excellent stability, retaining ∼96.8% of its initial activity after five consecutive cycles. This study highlights the potential of P-NCH21 as an efficient and robust photocatalyst for antibiotic remediation, providing new insights into the design of conductive polymer–based hybrid materials for environmental applications.

The realization of multi-energy water oxidation systems is impeded by the challenge of integrating multiple energy inputs. Here, we overcome this limitation via ultrasonic pre-treatment of the electrolyte, which triggers a mechano-electrochemical coupling effect through piezoelectric polarization. This process promotes a Grotthuss-type OH − state that weakens O-H bonds and increases the interfacial OH − concentration, thereby influencing the electrochemical reconstruction of Ni(OH) 2 to NiOOH and modifying water electrolysis pathways. These changes enhance Ni-O covalency and synergistically activate two low-energy water oxidation pathways on NiOOH involving lattice oxygen: one couples lattice oxygen with adsorbed oxygen, while the other facilitates direct lattice oxygen-oxygen coupling. Both routes bypass the high-energy * OOH intermediate typical of the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism ( * OH → * O → * OOH → O 2 ), with the latter also avoiding * O adsorption entirely. Notably, just one minute of ultrasonic stimulation reduces the overpotential by 222 mV at 100 mA cm -2 . This pulsed-energy strategy thus offers an efficient and scalable approach to realizing multi-energy-enhanced water splitting.

In the context of hydrogen energy development, hydrogen production technology based on the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) has attracted considerable attention owing to its mild reaction conditions and the high-purity hydrogen generation. Nevertheless, the intrinsically sluggish hydrolysis kinetics of NaBH 4 require the development of non-noble metal catalysts that simultaneously achieve high catalytic activity and excellent durability. In this work, a molybdenum-doped cobalt hydroxide (MoO 2 -Co(OH) 2 ) catalyst was fabricated via a homogeneous urea precipitation approach, and its catalytic performance for H 2 generation from NaBH 4 hydrolysis was systematically evaluated. Concurrently, SEM, TEM, and XPS characterizations collectively elucidated the reaction pathway and electronic modulation mechanism involving Mo-doping-induced Co 2+ oxidation and oxygen vacancy generation. Additionally, this study demonstrates that the composite material possesses favorable surface hydrophilicity and exceptional synergistic catalytic activity. Through systematic modulation of the Mo/Co molar ratio, the MoO 2 -Co(OH) 2 catalyst achieved an exceptional hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of 9831.46 mL·min −1 ·g −1 at ambient temperature, concomitant with a markedly reduced activation energy (38.81 kJ·mol −1 ) relative to pristine Co(OH) 2 (68.97 kJ·mol −1 ). Furthermore, the catalytic performance of this system is comparable to, or even superior to, that of state-of-the-art Co-based catalysts. The superior catalytic performance was ascribed to the synergistic contributions of abundant defect sites afforded by the amorphous architecture, the intrinsically enhanced activity stemming from the electronic structure modulation, and the enhanced stability endowed by the compact microstructure.

The electrochemical oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) coupled with water electrolysis for green hydrogen production is a promising strategy to address energy crises and environmental pollution. Despite the suitable adsorption energy for HMF due to their partially filled d-band electronic structures, Ni- or Co-based oxides/hydroxides still face challenges in insufficient activity and stability. In this study, a porous heterogeneous nickel cobalt oxide/hydroxide growth on nickel foam (NF), which is defined as NF@NiCo-H/O, was developed via immersion in concentrated alkali solution. Compared with the single-component NiCo oxides, the NF@NiCo-H/O catalyst exhibits a lower application potential of only 1.317 V, 1.395 V, and 1.443 V to achieve current densities of 20, 50, and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, in an alkaline solution containing HMF. Additionally, it demonstrates rapid reaction kinetics with a Tafel slope of 27.6 mV dec−1and excellent cycling stability. Importantly, the presence of more high-valent Ni3+-O species on the catalyst surface contributes to its exceptional selectivity for 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (86.7%), Faradaic efficiency (93.1%), and conversion rate (94.4%). This catalyst provides some theoretical guidance for the development of biomass electrooxidation catalysts for sustainable energy and chemical production.

Reconstruction of metal-organic frameworks often occurs under reaction conditions, thereby impeding true active species identification and hindering mechanism understanding. Herein, we present the mechanistic insight underlying the electrochemical synthesis of deprotonated anion of H 2 O 2 (HO 2 − ) via 2e − oxygen reduction by ultrathin Ni-benzenedicarboxylic acid (NiBDC), guided by its thickness-dependent performance and pH-induced reconstruction behavior. The real active species are identified as alkaline-reconstructed β-Ni(OH) 2 that is chemically coupled with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid residual ligand. The hybrid catalyst is characterized to exhibit an optimized surface electronic structure, which improves the intrinsic activity and selectivity. Operando characterization and theoretical simulations further reveal that the residual ligand functionalization significantly boosts the formation and facilitates the adequate binding of *OOH intermediates. Thus, the ligand-functionalized Ni(OH) 2 exhibits high HO 2 − selectivity (>90%) in 0.1 M KOH across a broad current density up to 200 mA cm −2 . Moreover, high HO 2 − production rate of 13.7 mol g cat −1 h −1 with significant accumulation of 2.0 wt.% HO 2 − under alkaline conditions is achieved at 200 mA cm −2 over 100 h, suggesting the promising potential for large-scale electrosynthesis of HO 2 − in industrial applications.

A high-efficient composite of flame retardant (CFR) composed of an aluminum hydroxide (ATH) core and an aluminum phosphate (AP) flower-like shell was synthesized by an in-situ growth method, which is low cost and easy-to-handle. It has been demonstrated that flame retardancy and smoke suppression of (ethylene-vinyl acetate) EVA/CFR were enhanced compared to EVA/ATH attributed to the high-efficiency heat barrier and gas isolation of ceramic char residues mainly composed of Al 2 O 3 porcelain agents and AlPO 4 sintering aids. Thus, the novel hierarchical core-shell AlPO 4 @Al(OH) 3 might supersede the ATH as flame retardants.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance in splitting water. However, the sluggish OER kinetics at the anode severely hinders the H 2 evolution at the cathode which is a crucial procedure for energy storage. Herein, we report the synthesis of a new OER catalyst of Co(OH) x (WO 4 ) y via a one-step hydrothermal method, where the incorporation of WO 4 2 − as a condenser greatly enhanced the electrocatalytic activity of Co(OH) 2 toward OER. Moreover, the introduction of mesoporous carbon (MC) further improves the electrocatalytic performance of Co(OH) x (WO 4 ) y by forming the nanocomposites of Co(OH) x (WO 4 ) y /MC. The synergism between Co(OH) 2 and WO 4 2 − and the synergistic catalytic effect of Co(OH) x (WO 4 ) y and MC majorly contributed to the apparently enhanced electrocatalysis of Co(OH) x (WO 4 ) y /MC toward OER. This work provides an efficient strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity of Co(OH) 2 by introducing WO 4 2 − and forming nanocomposites between Co(OH) x (WO 4 ) y and MC for low-cost, convenient and highly efficient water oxidation.

Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) birefringent crystals are essential for modern optical technologies, yet achieving a balance between large birefringence and a wide bandgap remains challenging. Although conventional borosulfates with alternating [BO4] and [SO4] tetrahedra connected by sharing corners possess a wide bandgap, they suffer from small birefringence due to weak optical anisotropy resulting from the presence of only tetrahedral groups. This work introduced advantageous “genes” [BO2(OH)] groups to modify the common [B(SO4)4] supertetrahedra for the first time and ultimately produced two borosulfates, Na3B3S2O11(OH)2 and K3B3S2O11(OH)2, striking the balance. Isolated fundamental building block (FBB) [B3O3(OH)2(SO4)2] was observed in the two compounds. Additionally, three conventional borosulfates featuring isolated [B(SO4)4] supertetrahedra, Na4KB(SO4)4, Na4RbB(SO4)4, and Na3Cs2B(SO4)4, were also obtained for comparison. Structural analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the directional alignment of [BO2(OH)] groups significantly enhances the birefringence of the borosulfates. The calculated birefringence at 1064 nm increases by approximately 10-fold, specifically from 0.0035–0.0047 for the three conventional borosulfates to 0.043–0.044 for the two hydroxylated ones. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of employing [BO2(OH)] groups in optimizing the optical anisotropy of borosulfates, providing a design paradigm for exploring advanced DUV birefringent materials in borosulfates.

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) separators face a critical challenge that gas bubble accumulation at electrode-separator interfaces impedes hydroxide-ion (OH − ) transport and limits current density at industrially relevant operating conditions. Conventional sulfonation, while improving hydrophilicity, requires hazardous chemicals. Here, we report a self-assembled polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) interface that overcome these limitations through a green, room-temperature process. The co-assembled network achieves ultralow bubble adhesion force (0.005 mN), enabling rapid gas detachment that prevents blocking layer formation, while simultaneously creating amine-rich pathways for enhanced OH − migration. Applied to polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) woven fabric, the modified separator delivers a four-fold increase in current density at 2.0 V with stable operation over 2000 h, and successfully scaling to an industrial 6-cell stack. This bioinspired interfacial engineering strategy provides a sustainable and scalable alternative to conventional chemical modifications for high-performance AWE separators.

Ferroptosis induced by iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides (LPOs) has received increasing attention in cancer therapy, especially chemodynamic therapy (CDT). However, the quick annihilation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) severely restricts the ˙OH/LPO conversion efficiency, which has become one of the key factors that influences the therapeutic efficacy of ferroptosis-based CDT. Herein, we designed a ˙OH/LPO nano-converter with a high LPO generation efficiency via loading ferrocene (Fc), a green Fenton catalyst, in the phospholipid bilayer of liposome-PEG (Fc-Lp-PEG). Under catalysis with Fc, the over-expressed H2O2 in tumors can be decomposed to ˙OH. The generated ˙OH in situ reacts with unsaturated lipids on the liposome, and is converted into LPOs, which spread the lipid peroxidation chain reaction to the remote membranes of cells and organelles, triggering efficient cancer cell ferroptosis. Systematic in vitro and in vivo therapeutic outcomes showed the high tumor inhibition ratio (74.0%) and the low side effects of Fc-Lp-PEG on 4T1 tumor-bearing mice. This novel strategy for improving the ˙OH/LPO conversion efficiency might provide new insights for the clinical development of ferroptosis-based CDT.

Halide perovskite nanomaterials have demonstrated promising potential in various fields, including photocatalysis for environmental remediation. However, perovskites’ poor stability toward water makes it difficult to use them for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. Herein, we develop a facile and scalable NaBr-assisted room-temperature aqueous phase procedure for the synthesis of all-inorganic CsPbBr3-embedded PbBr(OH) with controlled hierarchical structures, excellent ambient stability, and strong activity for photocatalytic degradation of dyes (e.g., methyl orange and methylene blue) in simulated organic wastewater. It is exceptional that the added NaBr can complex PbBr2 to form a transparent aqueous solution, enabling the subsequent reaction with the aqueous Cs2CO3 precursor to produce CsPbBr3-embedded PbBr(OH) microflowers and microspheres. The photocatalysis shows that the CsPbBr3-embedded PbBr(OH) photocatalysts exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under visible-light irradiation, which is significantly stronger than that of commercial TiO2 and some other perovskite-based materials produced using a previously reported method. The excellent stability of the CsPbBr3-embedded PbBr(OH) as a photocatalyst is verified by nine consecutive photocatalytic cycles without a noticeable drop in photodegradation efficiency. This work will shed light on the green synthesis of ultra-stable perovskite-based nanomaterials for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants as well as other promising water treatment technology prospects.
