Three-Dimensional Nanoporous Conducting Polymer Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) Decorated with Copper Nanoparticles: Electrochemical Preparation and Enhanced Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

Shuo Liu,Yihui Ma,Ruiqiao Zhang,Xiliang Luo

Graphical Super sensor : Cu nanoparticles electrodeposited onto a film of the 3D porous conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) exhibited significantly enhanced sensitivity toward the nonenzymatic sensing of glucose. Nanoporous conducting polymers have attracted much attention due to their tunable redox performances, outstanding environmental stability, and extensive potential applications. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was electrochemically prepared by using a hard-template method, and Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) were further loaded into the porous PEDOT nanostructure through electrodeposition. Because the 3D nanoporous PEDOT possesses a large surface area and is highly stable and conductive, it provides an excellent substrate for the loading of a large amount of CuNPs. The prepared porous CuNPs/PEDOT nanocomposite exhibited an excellent electrocatalytic property toward the oxidation of glucose owing to its unique microstructure, in which the loaded CuNPs provide many active sites for the oxidation of glucose and the 3D porous structure can facilitate the diffusion of glucose molecules and accelerate electron transfer. Under optimum conditions, the porous nanocomposite-modified electrode displayed a wide linear range for glucose detection from 0.1 to 482.1 μ m , with a detection limit of 52 n m . The sensitivity of the glucose sensor (329.6 μA m m −1 cm −2 ) was about eight times higher than that of an electrode modified with CuNPs on planar PEDOT, which indicates a significant enhancement effect associated with the 3D nanoporous structure.

An anti-fouling photoelectrochemical immunosensor based on zwitterionic peptide and Z-scheme PEDOT/ZnIn2S4 heterojunction for highly sensitive detection of Aβ40

Ximei Hu,Xiaoqi Chen,Jinlan Li,Jiawei Zhou,Xiaohua Zhu,Meiling Liu,Ying Liu,Youyu Zhang,Yang Liu

Amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) is considered a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Herein, we developed an anti-fouling photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for sensitive Aβ40 detection based on Z-scheme heterojunction poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/ZnIn 2 S 4 and zwitterionic peptide. Due to the excellent electrical conductivity of PEDOT, the Z-scheme PEDOT/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction exhibited a high photocurrent response, which can promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron/hole pairs. The zwitterionic peptide with hydrophilicity and electrical neutrality was used as a blocking agent to reduce nonspecific adsorption. The proposed PEC immunosensor showed outstanding performance for Aβ40 with high selectivity, stability, wide liner range (from 10 pg mL −1 to 5 ng mL −1 ), and a low detection limit (4.7 pg mL −1 ). Moreover, the integration strategy of heterojunction with zwitterionic peptide provides a promising way for protein detection in practical applications.

Molecular Weight Tailored Hydrogen Bonding Networks in PVA/PEDOT: PSS: Decoupling the Conductivity-Flexibility Trade-Off for Robust Epidermal EMG Monitoring

Qiao Fan,Kai Zhang,Lanlan Wei,Yongji Gong,Shuhao Qin,Min He,Yufei Liu,Tingting Luo,Shigui Peng,Jie Yu

Flexible wearable devices have significant potential for diverse applications, prioritizing the development of portable, safe, and stable dry electrodes. This study focused on designing six poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) (PSS) variants with controlled molecular weights (10k-70k), combined with a water-soluble soft polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), to enhance the electrical properties, mechanical strength, and long-term stability of the Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT): PSS polymer complex. We systematically examined morphological modifications, interactions, and conductive processes of PVA/PEDOT: PSS films, along with the mechanisms behind their improved stretchability and resistance stability. Results indicate that low molecular weight PSS provides the best mechanical flexibility due to stronger hydrogen bonding with PVA, enhancing elongation at break. However, insulating domains in PSS and PVA impede carrier transport, leading to a discontinuous charge hopping process along the PEDOT backbone, which decreases electrical conductivity. Conversely, high molecular weight PSS exhibits poor dispersion of rigid segments and conductive materials, resulting in decreased electrical and mechanical properties. Notably, with a molecular weight of 34k, the PVA/PEDOT: PSS film exhibits excellent electrical performance and mechanical flexibility, maintains good resistance stability after 1000 loading and unloading cycles at 30% strain, and demonstrates clear and stable electromyography (EMG) signals, indicating vast potential for EMG electrodes.

Design of a versatile and selective electrochemical sensor based on dummy molecularly imprinted PEDOT/laser-induced graphene for nitroaromatic explosives detection

Chibin Zheng,Yunhan Ling,Jianyue Chen,Xiaomin Yuan,Shilin Li,Zhengjun Zhang

Considering the formidable explosive power and human carcinogenicity of nitroaromatic explosives, the implementation of an accurate and sensitive detection technology is imperative for ensuring public safety and monitoring post-blast environmental contamination. In the present work, a versatile and selective electrochemical sensor based on dummy molecularly imprinted poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/laser-induced graphene (MIPEDOT/LIG) was successfully developed and the specific detection of multiple nitroaromatic explosives was realized in the single sensor. The accessible and nontoxic trimesic acid (TMA) and superior 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) were selected as the dummy-template and the functional monomer , respectively. The interaction between the functional monomer and the template, and the morphology, electrochemical properties and detection performance of the sensor were comprehensively investigated by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry. Benefiting from the alliance of TMA and EDOT, the MIPEDOT/LIG sensor manifested outstanding selectivity and sensitivity for 2,4,6-trinitrotolueen (TNT), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) (representative nitroaromatic explosives) with limits of determination of 1.95 ppb, 3.06 ppb, 2.49 ppb, 1.67 ppb, 1.94 ppb, and 4.56 ppb, respectively. The sensor also exhibited extraordinary reliability and convenience for environmental sample detection. Therefore, a perfect combination of versatility and selectivity in the MIPEDOT/LIG sensor was achieved. The findings of this work provide a new direction for the development of multi-target electrochemical sensors using a versatile dummy template for explosives detection .

An ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for detecting Cd(II) in aquatic products based on CS/COFs/PEDOT: PSS modified acupuncture needle electrode

Qi Guo,Yuhao Zhang,Luting Yan,Xiaoya Meng,Yue Wang,Hongguo Zhai,Xiaofeng Chen,Xia Sun,Yemin Guo,Yanyan Zhang

The use of low-cost working electrodes is of great importance for the development of sensor industrialization. Acupuncture needles electrode (ANE) was selected as working microelectrode, a sensor was designed based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) and chitosan (CS) modified covalent organic frameworks (COFs) (CS/COFs) for detection of cadmium (Cd(II)). First, a mixture of PEDOT and PSS was electrodeposited on the surface of the acupuncture needles to synthesize a PEDOT: PSS as conductive polymeric film to support the electron transfer capability and enhance the conductive efficiency of the sensor. Then, CS/COFs was self-assembled and attached to the PEDOT: PSS/ANE surface by π-π stacking intermolecular interaction forces and the viscosity of CS, thus increasing the specific surface area of the electrode. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was used as the electrochemical method for detection of Cd(II). And the results indicated that the CS/COFs/PEDOT: PSS/ANE was linearly responsive in the range of 400 μg/L to 2400 μg/L, and the LOD was 13.8 ng/L for Cd(II). The constructed sensor also showed great selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated outstanding recovery in the detection of Cd(II) in real sample scallops. This sensing construction method based on acupuncture needles as working electrodes is of great significance to the development of sensor industrialization and aquatic product safety detection.

Membrane fouling mitigation and EPS reduction by CNTs-TiO2-PEDOT modified anode-membrane in Membrane Electro-Bioreactor (MEBR) treating mariculture wastewater

Jing Song,Yihan Li,Shihan Wang,Rui Han,Yu Ba,Ying Liu,Shengqiang Fan

Membrane Electro-Bioreactor (MEBR), with dual function of electrochemical in-situ membrane fouling mitigation and pollutants removal by chlorine evolution reaction (CIER), has emerged as a promising technology of treating mariculture wastewater. However, the fouling control mechanism regarding extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) variations and related microbial community is still unclear. In this study, MEBR was developed with conducting anode-membrane modified by CNTs-TiO 2 -PEDOT for fouling resistant and ammonia/nitrite removal. The CIER electroactivity was enhanced that onset potential negatively shifted from 1.12 to 0.98 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode). Ammonia removal rate (71.49 mgN/(L·day)) was 176.8 % higher and nitrite was significantly reduced in MEBR than MBR at HRT of 45 min. Membrane fouling was mitigated in MEBR that operation duration was extended by 40 % compared with MBR. The EPS of cake layer on the membrane surface rather than the biofilters was found the main fouling contributor. The significant reduction in LB-EPSp (65.4 %) in MEBR (33.8 % in MBR) was the dominant factor contributing to membrane fouling alleviation, which highly depended on the relative abundance of Hyphomonas and Hirschia . This study will be beneficial for fouling control in seawater treatment.

Xinyu Lu,Yingying Li,Xuemin Duan,Yifu Zhu,Ting Xue,Liangmei Rao,Yangping Wen,Qingyun Tian,Yue Cai,Quan Xu,Jingkun Xu

A novel nanozyme sensor based on the electro-synthesized molecularly imprinted conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanocomposite with graphene-like two-dimensional layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) was successfully prepared for electrochemical detection and analysis of luteolin in Gnaphalium affine. MoS 2 -MIPs were prepared facilely by electrochemical polymerization of monomer 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene in the presence of both modifier MoS 2 and template molecule luteolin that can change the morphological structure and specific surface area of PEDOT, enhance electronic conductivity of MoS 2 , and improve the recognition capability and electrocatalytic capacity of electrode interface. The morphological structure of MoS 2 -MIPs was characterized by SEM, and its electrochemical performance and sensing parameters were investigated by voltammetry. The electrochemical response of luteolin was recorded by MoS 2 -MIPs in the linear concentration range from 3 × 10 -7 to 3 × 10 -5 Μ with limit of detection of 0.04 μΜ under the optimal conditions, which was successfully employed for electrochemically detecting luteolin in Gnaphalium affine with acceptable recoveries in comparison with high-performance liquid chromatography. This will provide a new nanozyme sensing platform comprised of electro-synthesized molecularly imprinted conducting polymers and graphene-like two-dimensional layered nanomaterials.

Antifreezing and stretchable all-gel-state supercapacitor with enhanced capacitances established by graphene/PEDOT-polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel fibers with dual networks

Ting Xu,Dongzhi Yang,Shiyi Zhang,Tianyu Zhao,Ming Zhang,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Although aqueous fibrous supercapacitor is one of the most advantageous energy storage devices for powering wearable electronics due to its excellent flexibility, outstanding cycling stability and high safety, it is still a challenge for its electroactive components to be cold-tolerant and stretchable for adapting fluctuating climate environments. Herein, a graphene/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel fiber with a continuous rose flower-like network is firstly constructed, and an antifreezing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) network is subsequently taken into the hydrogel fiber via solvent replacement to generate an antifreezing and stretchable graphene/PEDOT-PVA hydrogel fiber with dual networks. Benefiting from superior interface compatibility of the hydrogel fiber with a PVA electrolyte, the assembled all-gel-state supercapacitor delivers a high capacitance of 281.2 F g −1 (0.1 A g −1 ) at 25 °C, more than twice higher than that of an aerogel fiber-based supercapacitor. Furthermore, this supercapacitor exhibits stable subzero-temperature electrochemical performances due to the smooth ion-transport channels and good conductivity of the antifreezing hydrogel fiber electrode, evidenced by the high specific capacitance of 212.6 F g −1 and the excellent capacitance retention of 91% after 5000 charge/discharge cycles at −20 °C. Finally, a highly stretchable spring-like supercapacitor exhibits an excellent capacitance retention of 92% after 5000 stretching cycles at a strain of 500%.

Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensor Based on 3D Wormlike PEDOT-PPy Polymer for the Sensitive Determination of Rutin in Flos Sophorae Immaturus

Rongqian Meng,Jianke Tang,Xiaojun Wu,Shengjian Zhang,Xin Wang,Qiaoling Li,Riya Jin

A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with 3D worm-like nanorod structures was constructed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) polymerization, using 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and pyrrole (Py) as bifunctional monomers, and rutin as the template on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The optimum polymerization conditions of MIP were obtained by the orthogonal test. The range analysis suggested that the potential range was the most influential factor. Compared with MIP/1.5 and MIP/1.9, the MIP films prepared in the potential range of 0–1.7 V (MIP/1.7) had better current response to rutin, faster charge transfer rate and higher doping levels by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), Chronocoulometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Rutin could be detected in the concentration range of 0.5 nM to 1 μM, and 5 to 50 μM with the low detection limit as 0.24 nM (S/N = 3). Moreover, MIP/1.7 exhibited 3-fold increase current response toward rutin by DPV when compared with the corresponding non-imprinted polymer (NIP), revealing the success of the imprinting. This sensor also exhibited high selectivity, good long-term stability, and acceptable reproducibility. The rutin content in Flos Sophorae Immaturus (FSI) was 25.37% with good accuracy.

Xiaoyi Li,Xueshan Zhao,Ruiqi Liu,Hui Wang,Shuang Wang,Bing Fan,Chenggong Hu,Haibo Wang

Conductive hydrogel sensors have attracted attention for use in human motion monitoring detection, but integrating excellent biocompatibility, mechanical, self-adhesive, and self-healing properties, and high sensitivity into a hydrogel remains a challenge. In this work, a novel multifunctional conductive particle was designed and added to a polyacrylamide (PAM) matrix to prepare the hydrogel. It is worth noting that with the addition of polydopamine@poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PDA@PEDOT), the PAM/PDA@PEDOT hydrogel (PAPP hydrogel) showed excellent mechanical properties and high adhesion strength on different substrate surfaces. Meanwhile, the PAPP hydrogel shows outstanding self-healing properties, the mechanical properties of PAPP hydrogel broken from the middle recovered 92% tensile strength and 95% elongation at break after 12 h, respectively. Furthermore, assembled as strain wireless sensors, the PAPP sensor displays high sensitivity, where the gauge factor (GF) is 2.82, which can be used to accurately detect human facial micro-expressions and movements. Overall, the PAPP hydrogel with excellent mechanical, self-adhesive, and self-healing properties, and high sensitivity, demonstrated promise for use in wearable devices and bionic skins.

Optimized detection of calcium ion in serum using constant potential coulometry with metastable liquid–liquid contact doping enhanced PEDOT: PSS ink

Suyun Wei,Jie Zhao,Shaojun Ke,Mingjia Zou,Qingze Han,Guofeng Cui

Highly stable calcium ion selective electrodes (Ca 2+ -ISEs) were developed by drop-casting a layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) as an ion-to-electron transfer layer onto Au electrode. The conductive PEDOT: PSS ink was prepared using a metastable liquid–liquid contact (MLLC) doping method, which induced phase separation, removed excess PSS, and significantly enhanced charge transfer kinetics and conductivity. The resulting Ca 2+ -ISEs exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. Potentiometric studies revealed a significant sensitivity of 33.1 ± 0.98 mV/decade (N = 3) with a high potential stability of 3.16 ± 2.53 μV/h. Importantly, Ca 2+ -ISEs combined with the constant potential coulometry method, the lower detection limit was optimized to 8.527 × 10 −8  M (LOD = 3σ/s, N = 3). The performance of the Ca 2+ -ISE system was evaluated in inactivated fetal bovine serum using constant potential coulometry, demonstrating the highest measurement accuracy compared to potentiometric and chronoamperometric. The enhanced PEDOT: PSS-MLLC based Ca 2+ -ISEs combined with the constant potential coulometry method developed in this research demonstrate considerable potential for clinical applications in blood ion analysis.

A dual polymer composite of poly(3-hexylthiophene) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) hybrid surface heterojunction with g-C3N4 for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Hailian Bao,Xiaodi Chen,Rui Yuan,Chao Zhang,Shiai Xu

A surface heterojunction catalyst of g-C3N4–PEDOT/P3HT with P3HT and PEDOT as the polymer sensitizer and hole transport pathway is successfully prepared. The as constructed g-C3N4–PEDOT/P3HT composite exhibits a photocatalyst H2 evolution rate up to 427703.3 μmol h−1 g−1 which is 1059 times higher than that of g-C3N4, 118 times higher than that of g-C3N4–PEDOT with ascorbic acid as sacrificial reagents. What's more, the g-C3N4–PEDOT/P3HT can even show an obviously enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution rate which is 6.1 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 in pure water without any sacrificial reagent. Combining the experimental results and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation results, a possible mechanism can be drawn that the existed PEDOT possesses relatively higher hole mobility and can be used as a hole conductor between g-C3N4 and P3HT. Then, the photogenerated holes migration can be accelerated by PEDOT from the VB of g-C3N4 to the VB of P3HT. All those factors may benefit the synergy among g-C3N4, PEDOT and P3HT, which finally facilitates the rapid migration of photoinduced electron–hole pairs and eventually improves the photocatalytic H2 activity process of g-C3N4–PEDOT/P3HT with visible light. The present work may provide useful insights for designing a surface heterojunction composite photocatalyst with high photocatalytic activity for H2 production.
