Presently, most nanofiltration membranes are prepared with non-biodegradable petrochemical materials. This process is harmful to the ecosystem and consumes a large amount of non-renewable energy. In this study, biodegradable and biocompatible antibacterial cellulose/chitosan nanofiltration membranes (BC/CS-NFMs) were fabricated and characterized for their mechanical strength, antimicrobial activity, salt and dye filtration performance, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) retention using Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The BC/CS-NFMs were obtained by the hydrolysis and carboxymethylation of dense cellulose/chitosan membranes (BC/CSMs). The tensile strength of the BC/CS-NFMs decreased as the chitosan content increased. In addition, the thermal stability and antibacterial ability of the BC/CS-NFMs improved. The pore size is less than 1 nm, and a spongy, layered structure is observed in the cross-sectional FE-SEM images. FT-IR analysis shows that a part of the hydroxyl in cellulose transforms to carboxymethyl during the hydrolysis and carboxymethylation of the BC/CSMs. No obvious changes can be observed in the cellulose and chitosan after the blend membrane formation from the XRD measurements. Based on the experimental results on the permeation and rejection of BC/CS-NFMs, different proportions of cellulose and chitosan nanofiltration membranes almost did not affect the water flux and rejection rate. The BC/CS-NFMs showed better water flux and a higher rejection rate in aqueous dye-salt solutions. Keywords:cellulose;chitosan;antibacterial activity;nanofiltration membranes

In the present study, nanocomposites films formed by hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized and characterized. Compared with pure hydroxyethyl cellulose film, the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the composite materials were significantly improved. When the graphene loading was only 1.0 wt%, the maximum weight loss temperature increased 11.14 °C. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of HEC/GO nanocomposites films were increased by 30.28 and 75.63 % compared to the pure HEC films, with only 1.0 wt% GO. The X-ray diffraction and Fouriertransform infrared spectroscop showed that GO sheets were completely exfoliated in the HEC matrix and suggested the presence of the weak interaction between HEC and GO sheets because of large number of oxygen-containing hydrophilic functional groups on the surface and edge of GO sheets. Furthermore, the well-dispersed GO nanosheets in the films can be inferred from the SEM and Halpin-Tsai model analysis. On the other hand, the composite films showed improved barrier properties against oxygen. This simple process for preparation of HEC/GO films is attractive for potential development of high-performance films for packing applications.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were isolated from corn stalk using sulfuric acid hydrolysis, and their morphology, chemical structure, and thermal stability properties were characterized. The CNCs had an average length of 120.2 ± 61.3 nm and diameter of 6.4 ± 3.1 nm (L/D = 18.7). The degree of crystallinity of the CNCs increased to 69.20% from the 33.20% crystallinity of raw corn stalk fiber, while the chemical structure was well kept after sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Thermal stability analysis showed that the degradation temperature of the CNCs reached 239.5 °C, which was higher than that of the raw fiber but lower than that of the extracted cellulose. The average activation energy values for the CNCs, evaluated using the Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (F-W-O) and Coats-Redfern methods, were 312.6, 302.8, and 309 kJ·mol−1in the conversion range of 0.1 to 0.8. The isolated CNCs had higher values of activation energy than did the purified cellulose, which was attributed to the stronger hydrogen bonds present in the crystalline domains of CNCs than in those of cellulose. These findings can help better understand the thermal properties of polymer/CNC composites. Keywords:corn stalk;fiber;cellulose nanocrystal;thermal properties;activation energy

In recent years, safety laminated glasses have been widely used in construction, transportation, military, and other fields owing to their safety, comfort, and concealment. In this work, a cellulose nanocrystal was synthesized and blended in a polyurethane (PU) elastomer. Based on this, an aliphatic PU composite (CPU) film with high transparency and excellent mechanical properties has been achieved by stepwise polymerization. The mechanical properties and impact resistance of CPU composites were improved obviously, attributed to the microphase separation and hydrogen bonding. The tensile strength and bonding strength of the CPU film with glass can reach 53 and 3.4 MPa, which were 150 and 280% higher than those of the PU film, respectively. Extremely strong impact resistance of the laminated glass based on the CPU film has been confirmed by the falling ball impact test, which was 2.3 times that of polyvinyl butyral and 3.5 times that of PU. It will be an excellent candidate for safety laminated glass, which can be used in the aerospace, defense, and automotive fields.

Fluorescence sensing for Pb2+ was developed using the in-situ growth of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals on a flexible cellulose film for the determination of Pb2+. Sulfhydryl groups were introduced onto the cellulose film to improve the extraction efficiency of Pb2+. The fluorescence signal exhibited a linear response to the Pb2+ concentration from 0.1 to 1.0 µg mL−1 with a detection limit of 3.2 × 10−2 µg mL−1. The film could be used to direct Pb2+ on a solid surface. The approach eliminates complex sample pretreatment, offering simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and rapid response. Its semi-quantitative capability shows promise for on-site screening of Pb2+ on surfaces (e.g., toy, pencils).

Tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) is the primary ingredient in ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Understanding the hydration kinetics of C 3 S with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is the key to unveiling the intrinsic mechanism of CNC affecting OPC hydration . This study investigates the hydration interactions between C 3 S and CNC through extensive testing. Findings indicate that CNC incorporation can initially slow the hydration reaction and postpone the early-stage hydration of C 3 S. However, past the initial period (3 days in this study), CNC presence enhances the hydration pace and aids the hydration process , leading to an increase in the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) and calcium hydroxide (CH) without creating new phases. Further, the presence of CNC promotes the homogenous hydration of C 3 S, ensuring a homogenous distribution of hydration products . It also reduces the Ca/Si ratio in the C–S–H, without altering the C–S–H morphology. A correlation is made between heat flow and the thickness of hydration products enveloping C 3 S particles, confirming that CNC can intensify the inward water diffusion rate through C 3 S particles for the same hydration product thickness. Critically, it is found that the effect of CNC on C 3 S hydration is dependent on the water/C 3 S ratio. A low or moderate water/C 3 S ratio can promote C 3 S hydration but a very high water/C 3 S ratio diminishes the beneficial effects of CNC on C 3 S hydration. Finally, the study proposes a explanation for CNC's influence over the hydration of C 3 S with varying water/C 3 S ratios.

This study presents a novel hydrophobic lignocellulosic bioplastic from corn stover reinforced by oxidized cellulose and in situ regenerated lignin. Cellulose-lignin mixture as a matrix was obtained by acid-recyclable deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment of corn stover in mild conditions. Triethoxy(octyl)silane (C 14 H 32 O 3 Si) was employed to improve the water stability of the bioplastic by vapor deposition. The results show that the hydrophobic bioplastic has a high tensile strength, measuring 62.36 MPa. The water contact angle of the bioplastic was increased from 8.50° to 121.9° after hydrophobic modification. We prepared oxidized cellulose-reinforced cellulose paper by different particle size distributions of oxidized cellulose to investigate the reinforcement of oxidized cellulose. The tensile strength of oxidized cellulose cellulose paper increased from 14.41 to 21.18 MPa with the addition of oxidized cellulose. The zeta potential of oxidized cellulose is −47.99 mV, which shows a more negative charge due to carbonyl groups. The repulsive force of oxidized cellulose contributes to the formation of a brick-and-mortar microstructure with cellulose-lignin mixture. It demonstrates that oxidized cellulose can act as bio-adhesives and has a good toughening effect on the mechanical properties of bioplastic. Highlights Lignocellulosic bioplastic was prepared by DES pretreatment of corn stover. Oxidized cellulose was used to reinforce the lignocellulosic bioplastic. The tensile strength of the bioplastic was 62.36 MPa after the reinforcement process. Trieth-oxy(octyl)silane was employed to improve water stability. The water contact angle of the bioplastic was increased from 8.50° to 121.9°.

This study explored the structure and performance of starch-based antibacterial films reinforced with black tea cellulose nanocrystals (BT-CNCs). The optimal addition amount of BT-CNCs is 5 % (w/w Starch). This nanocrystal-infused film, incorporating chitosan (CS), ε-polylysine (ε-PL), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) as antibacterial agents, exhibited a smooth, continuous surface. The addition of BT-CNCs and antibacterial agents did not change the group characteristic peaks of the film, but changed the crystallinity slightly. The films, namely St, St/CNCs, St/CNCs/CS, and St/CNCs/ε-P, maintained high light transmittance (above 80 %), except for the St/CNCs/ZnONP film, which effectively shielded UV radiation. The combined use of antibacterial agents and BT-CNCs enhanced the water and oxygen barrier properties of the film. Notably, the St/CNCs/CS film exhibited the lowest solubility (17.74 % ± 0.36) and the highest tensile strength (14.23 ± 0.16 MPa). The antibacterial efficacy of the films decreased in the order of St/CNCs/ZnONP, St/CNCs/ε-PL, and St/CNCs/CS, with a more pronounced inhibitory effect on E. coli compared to S. aureus . This study marries natural waste recycling with cutting-edge food packaging technology, setting a new benchmark for the development of sustainable packaging materials .

A novel environmentally-friendly conjugate structural membrane, composed of cuprammonium cellulose (CC), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), was fabricated using conjugate electrospinning. Adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from water was achieved using the conjugated membrane (CC-PAN). By combining PEO and PAN with CC, the membrane's mechanical strength was significantly enhanced, and notably improved its selective adsorption capability for antibiotics in both organic and inorganic systems. The CC-PAN membrane demonstrated high adsorption capacity for ciprofloxacin (CIP), reaching a maximum of 70.7 mg/g. The adsorption ability of CC-PAN towards CIP remained unaffected even at low CIP concentrations of 5 ppm in tap water. The adsorption mechanisms of CC-PAN onto CIP were extensively investigated by combining adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms. Spectroscopic methods were further employed to explore the interactions at various pH levels from 2 to 10. The adsorption capacity revealed a clear pH dependence. Specifically, at pH < 6.4, electrostatic attraction, interactions between electron donors and acceptors (likely hydrogen bonding), were the most predominant interactions. Furthermore, CC-PAN exhibited excellent stability, retaining 68 mg/g of its original adsorption capability during five successive adsorption-desorption repetitions. In addition to CIP, CC-PAN could also effectively remove tetracycline (TC) and trimethoprim (TMP). Based on these vital characteristics, CC-PAN demonstrates potential as an effective material for removing antibiotics from water through adsorption.

The ability to convert moisture signals into electrical signals through contactless control underpins a wide range of applications, including health monitoring, disaster warning, and energy harvesting. Despite its potential, the effective utilization of low-grade energy remains challenging, as it often requires complex device architectures that limit scalability and integration, particularly in wearable technologies. Here, we present a soft, flexible moisture-electric converter made from cellulose nanocrystals and polyvinyl alcohol composite films, designed for a novel touchless interactive platform. The device autonomously generates an electric output voltage of 200–700 mV in response to ambient moisture variations without requiring an external energy source. Its design, featuring a soft-adhered conductive carbon strip coupled with the composite film, provides high flexibility and portability. This configuration facilitates the creation of a non-contact control interface that seamlessly interacts with biological moisture from the human body, demonstrated by a mask that detects breathing conditions and a panel that measures contact distance. These advancements offer a promising pathway for developing flexible, intelligent electronic devices for wearable and touchless technologies.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility has aroused great attention for wound healing. However, the surface inertness of BC nanofibers tremendously hindered its biofunctionalized to improve the antibacterial ability and cytocompatibility. Herein, the biofunctionalized BC was fabricated by in situ growing a uniformly polydopamine (PDA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating and grafting bacitracin (BA) on the coating (BA-PPBC). The results confirmed that the BA-grafted PDA/PEI coating was distributed uniformly on the surface of BC nanofibers, and the natural three-dimensional pore structure and other physical properties of pristine BC were retained. Compared to BC, the obtained BA-PPBC materials exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against the adhesion and colonization of S. aureus and MRSA . Moreover, the BA-PPBC not only had no obvious cytotoxicity to NIH-3T3 cells, but also improved the adhesion, proliferation, and spread out of cells. This work provides a biofunctionalized BC dressing to simultaneously meet the requirements of wound healing.

The ambiguous source and uncontrolled solubility of gelatin make it crucial to develop gelatin capsule substitutes. Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) of excellent mechanical performance, good biocompatibility and green origin has drawn many attentions as a new class of biomaterials. In this work, NCC capsule was prepared by dipping method with PEG and glycerol as plasticizer. The effect of PEG and glycerol on the rheological property of NCC gel and the surface morphology of NCC capsule was evaluated. The disintegration time of NCC capsule meet the criteria in United States Pharmacopoeia (USP32-701).There is no significant difference in the release of sulfuric acid between gelatin capsule and NCC capsule. NCC capsule thus has the potential as a green platform for biomedical applications in drug delivery.
