Magnesium ions are highly enriched in early stage of biological mineralization of hard tissues. Paradoxically, hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystallization is inhibited significantly by high concentration of magnesium ions. The mechanism to regulate magnesium-doped biomimetic mineralization of collagen fibrils has never been fully elucidated. Herein, it is revealed that citrate can bioinspire the magnesium-stabilized mineral precursors to generate magnesium-doped biomimetic mineralization as follows: Citrate can enhance the electronegativity of collagen fibrils by its absorption to fibrils via hydrogen bonds. Afterward, electronegative collagen fibrils can attract highly concentrated electropositive polyaspartic acid-Ca&Mg (PAsp-Ca&Mg) complexes followed by phosphate solution via strong electrostatic attraction. Meanwhile, citrate adsorbed in/on fibrils can eliminate mineralization inhibitory effects of magnesium ions by breaking hydration layer surrounding magnesium ions and thus reduce dehydration energy barrier for rapid fulfillment of biomimetic mineralization. The remineralized demineralized dentin with magnesium-doped HAp possesses antibacterial ability, and the mineralization mediums possess excellent biocompatibility via cytotoxicity and oral mucosa irritation tests. This strategy shall shed light on cationic ions-doped biomimetic mineralization with antibacterial ability via modifying collagen fibrils and eliminating mineralization inhibitory effects of some cationic ions, as well as can excite attention to the neglected multiple regulations of small biomolecules, such as citrate, during biomineralization process.

When MgO+ZrO 2 were used as a sintering aid to SiC ceramics, it was found that ZrO 2 reacted with SiC and MgO to form ZrC and a magnesium silicate. This reaction may provide a new route to synthesize ZrC or prepare ZrC/SiC composites by reaction sintering using ZrO 2 , SiC, and MgO as starting materials. In the present work, formation process of the ZrC phase in the SiC–MgO–ZrO 2 system was addressed. Subsolidus phase relations at 1550 °C of the SiC–MgO–ZrO 2 system and the related SiC–SiO 2 –ZrC–ZrO 2 –MgO (Si–Zr–Mg–O–C) system were investigated.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) coated by Mg-aminoclay (MgAC) was prepared by the liquid-phase reduction method for high-efficiency removal of Cr(VI). The particles (MgAC-nZVI) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), zeta potential analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the positively charged MgAC was capable of inhibiting the aggregation of nZVI particles and improving their dispersion stability in aqueous solution. Batch experiments showed that an iron dose of 0.125 g·L −1 in the form of MgAC-nZVI, at an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 20 mg·L −1 could maintain a good performance on Cr(VI) removal at a wide pH range. It was proved that the presence of co-existing ions (Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ and SO 4 2− ) except PO 4 3− in the solution had positive influence on the removal of Cr(VI). Due to the large accessible surface area and the protonated amino groups (-NH 3 + ) on the particle surface, MgAC-nZVI could remove Cr(VI) through fast adsorption and efficient reduction. The removal of Cr(VI) by using MgAC-nZVI was proved to be in accordance with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics . Based on the identification of the reduction products, Cr(VI) was reduced by Fe 0 to form Cr(III). Eventually, the Cr(VI) was removed in a way of Cr(III)-Fe(III) co-precipitates adsorbed on the surface of MgAC-nZVI particles. Moreover, the MgAC-nZVI particles have a better performance of reusability than the uncoated nZVI .

Electrochemical biosensors are essential for health monitors to help in diagnosis and detection of diseases. Enzyme adsorptions on biosensor electrodes and direct electron transfer between them have been recognized as key factors to affect biosensor performance. TiO2 has a good protein adsorption ability and facilitates having more enzyme adsorption and better electron transfer. In this work, Mg ions are introduced into TiO2 nanodots in order to further improve electrode performance because Mg ions are considered to have good affinity with proteins or enzymes. Mg doped TiO2 nanodots on Ti substrates were prepared by spin-coating and calcining. The effects of Mg doping on the nanodots morphology and performance of the electrodes were investigated. The density and size of TiO2 nanodots were obviously changed with Mg doping. The sensitivity of 2% Mg doped TiO2 nanodots based biosensor electrode increased to 1377.64 from 897.8 µA mM−1 cm−2 and its decreases to 0.83 from 1.27 mM, implying that the enzyme achieves higher catalytic efficiency due to better affinity of the enzyme with the Mg doped TiO2. The present work could provide an alternative to improve biosensor performances.

In China, 80 % of lithium resources are in the salt lakes of the Tibetan Plateau, although the Mg 2+ /Li + ratios in them are too high, limiting the development of China’s lithium extraction industry from the salt lakes. This study investigates the potential of the LiMn 2 O 4 -Zn cell system for lithium extraction from brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. The system demonstrates excellent selectivity for Li + and efficiently extracts Li + even in brines with Mg 2+ /Li + ratios as high as 100:1 (wt%). The system operates stably at various brine concentrations, particularly in high-salinity environments. The study also investigates the kinetic performance of the LMO-Zn system, revealing optimal performance at high Li + concentrations and moderate current densities. The LiMn 2 O 4 -Zn cell system presents a promising approach for lithium extraction from brines, offering high selectivity, reversibility, and adaptability.

In this study, high-temperature solid-phase techniques are used to prepare pristine and Mg-modified LiNiO 2 cathode materials. Various characterizations are performed to analyze the morphology, structure, and electrical state of the two materials. Electrochemical tests show that Mg doping effectively improves the electrochemical properties of the materials. In particular, the modified sample exhibits a higher specific discharge capacity of 244.5 mA h g −1 than the pristine sample. Moreover, its maximum capacity retention after 304 cycles at 1 C is 54.1%. In situ X-ray powder diffraction imaging reveals that the modified material has better phase-transition reversibility than the pristine material. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Mg-doped Li sites can accelerate Li + transport. Atomic force microscopy results demonstrate that Mg-doped Li sites act as supportive skeletons that enhance the mechanical properties of the material. Therefore, the proposed strategy for the Mg doping of Li sites can improve the architecture of LiNiO 2 cathode materials.

The sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) highly depends on the number of hotspots under laser spot and the number of analyte molecules near hotspots. Thus, a SERS substrate was constructed by assembling Ag nanocubes on a paper, which was previously modified with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) through in-situ polymerization. On the prepared substrate, the density of hotspots and analyte molecules near the hotspots are increased by the high surface area of paper and the modification of MIP. Malachite green (MG) is a toxic and prohibited drug that is very polluted to the environment, so monitor of trace MG is vital in complex environment. The minimum detectable concentration of MG molecules on the paper-based SERS substrate is 3.65 × 10 −3 ng/mL. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is 8.58 % and the EF is approximate to 1.78 × 10 7 . In addition, MG molecules can be accurately detected in the presence of interfering molecules, the imprinting factors of MG is up to 1.69. Furthermore, the substrate can be used for the detection of MG in shrimp leach liquor, and its minimum detectable concentration is as low as 0.365 ng/mL, the RSD is 7.49 %. The above results indicate that this substrate can be used for detecting trace molecule in complex samples.

The electron transport layer (ETL) plays a crucial role in fabricating efficient and stable planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among the various alternatives to TiO 2 for ETLs, tin oxide (SnO 2 ) has emerged as a highly promising candidate due to its outstanding potential. However, improvements in SnO 2 materials remain necessary due to inherent limitations such as low conductivity, high energy barrier, and interfacial defects. In this study, Mg 2+ ions were introduced into SnO 2 to substitute Sn sites, leading to an increase in the open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of perovskite solar cells, and consequently enhancing overall device efficiency. With a Mg doping concentration of 3.0%, the V oc and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the solar cell reached 1.540 V and 7.17%, respectively. The incorporation of Mg 2+ ions into SnO 2 presents an effective method to improve the performance of SnO 2 ETL in perovskite solar cells while utilizing more environmentally friendly solvents.

The O3-type layered oxide materials have the advantage of high specific capacity, which makes them more competitive in the practical application of cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the existing reported O3-type layered oxide materials still have a complex irreversible phase transition phenomenon, and the cycle life of batteries needs, with these materials, to be further improved to meet the requirements. Herein, we performed structural characterization and electrochemical performance tests on O3-NaNi0.6−xFe0.25Mn0.15MgxO2(x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.075, denoted as NFM, NFM-2.5Mg, NFM-5.0Mg, and NFM-7.5Mg). The optimized NFM-2.5Mg has the largest sodium layer spacing, which can effectively enhance the transmission rate of sodium ions. Therefore, the reversible specific capacity can reach approximately 148.1 mAh g−1at 0.2C, and it can even achieve a capacity retention of 85.4% after 100 cycles at 1C, demonstrating excellent cycle stability. Moreover, at a low temperature of 0 °C, it also can keep capacity retention of 86.6% after 150 cycles at 1C. This study provides a view on the cycling performance improvement of sodium-ion layered oxide cathodes with a high theoretical specific capacity.

Lithium manganese oxide (LMO) ion sieves are promising for lithium extraction due to their high adsorption capacity. However, their practical application is often limited by structural degradation from manganese leakage, reduced lithium uptake, and poor Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity, especially in brines with high Mg/Li ratios. To overcome these challenges, we in-situ synthesized polyamide (PA) nanofiltration membranes on the surface of LMO using two distinct amine monomers, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and piperazine (PIP), to create novel composite adsorbents LMO@PA(PEI) and LMO@PA(PIP). Both the coated materials demonstrated improved lithium uptake capacity and cyclic stability in adsorption-desorption cycles in simulated brine. More importantly, under a challenging Li/Mg ratio of 1:50 in binary ion solutions, the separation factors (α) of HMO@PA(PEI) and HMO@PA(PIP) were 2.23 and 4.55 times higher than that of uncoated HMO, showcasing excellent Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity. These findings highlight that polyamide nanofiltration layers successfully endow LMO with enhanced capacity, selectivity, and long-term stability, presenting a promising and scalable approach for direct lithium extraction from high‑magnesium salt lakes.

The escalating demand for plastics has necessitated advancements in plastic recycling technologies. This study examines the development of heterogeneous metal catalysts aimed at improving the hydrolysis performance of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a commonly used plastic, and enhancing the conversion efficiency for the efficient production of terephthalic acid (TPA). A series of Mg-Al bimetallic oxide with varying Mg and Al ratios were synthesized and employed as catalysts for the hydrolysis of PET under various conditions, including reaction temperature (80°C–220°C), reaction time (10–300 min), and solvent ratio. Optimization of the process revealed that the optimal conditions for catalytic hydrolysis were achieved at 200°C, 300 min, using a Mg-Al-1 catalyst and a solvent ratio of 5:5 ethanol to water, resulting in a PET conversion efficiency of 95.6% and a TPA yield of 80.3%. Over 70% TPA yield could be generated after first hydrolysis without regeneration. Under hydrothermal conditions, polyethylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol was found after reaction, as identified by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). This study offers a sustainable and feasible pathway for TPA recovery from PET, contributing to the advancement of recycling technologies.

Magnesium ion batteries have potential for large-scale energy storage. However, the high charge density of Mg2+ ions establishes a strong intercalation energy barrier in host materials, causing sluggish diffusion kinetics and structural degradation. Here, we report that the kinetic and dissolution issues connected to cathode materials can be resolved simultaneously using a tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME)–water hybrid electrolyte. The lubricating and shielding effect of water solvent could boost the swift transport of Mg2+, contributing to a high diffusion coefficient within the sodium vanadate (NaV8O20·nH2O) cathode. Meanwhile, the organic TEGDME component can coordinate with water to diminish its activity, thus providing the hybrid electrolyte with a broad electrochemical window of 3.9 V. More importantly, the TEGDME preferentially amassed at the interface, leading to a robust cathode electrolyte interface layer that suppresses the dissolution of vanadium species. Consequently, the NaV8O20·nH2O cathode achieved a specific capacity of 351 mAh g–1 at 0.3 A g–1 and a long cycle life of 1000 cycles in this hybrid electrolyte. A mechanism study revealed the reversible interaction of Mg2+ during cycles. This organic water hybrid electrolyte is effective for overcoming the difficulty of multivalent ion storage.
