The SnO 2 -based anode with improved reversible capacity and cyclability was achieved by employing a protective layer composed of crosslinked polypyrrole nanowires. Scanning electron microscopy measurement was performed to characterize the surface and cross section morphology of electrodes before and after cycling. The crosslinked polypyrrole nanowire protective layer with good elasticity adhered to the SnO 2 surface could form a network, leading to buffer the volumetric swelling of active materials during the lithiation/delithiation process. A good cycling stability and an excellent rate capability of the modified electrode were achieved.

ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts have attracted considerable attention in biomass valorization owing to their tunable band structures and abundant surface reaction sites. However, the aqueous-phase selective photooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) remains highly challenging due to the insufficient O 2 activation, substrate mineralization, and competitive coupling side reactions. Herein, a single-atom Sn-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst (Sn-ZIS) was constructed. Systematic characterizations confirm that Sn species are atomically dispersed and incorporated into the ZnIn 2 S 4 lattice through Sn-S coordination. Under aqueous-phase reaction conditions, Sn-ZIS achieves 88.7% HMF conversion, 80.5% DFF selectivity, and 93.3% C equilibrium, higher than those of ZnIn 2 S 4 and many reported aqueous-phase photocatalytic systems. The better performance of Sn-ZIS is mainly attributed to the synergistic regulation of the band structure and local electronic structure induced by Sn incorporation. The optimized band structure moderately weakens the oxidative ability of photogenerated holes, thereby reducing HMF mineralization to CO 2 . While the regulation of the local electronic structure promotes O 2 adsorption and activation to generate superoxide radicals, it simultaneously facilitates DFF desorption from the catalyst surface. Synergy between the two functions drives the selective conversion of HMF into DFF. This work demonstrates the potential of single-atom doping for enhancing aqueous-phase biomass photooxidation and provides a rational strategy for designing efficient ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts.

Developing efficient Pt-based catalysts is crucial for sustainable lactic acid (LA) production via glycerol oxidation. Herein, we synthesized a series of robust PtIn/Sn-MFI catalysts with low Pt loading of 0.5 wt% for glycerol oxidation under base-free conditions. The PtIn/Sn-MFI catalysts with varying In contents exhibited a volcano-shaped trend between turnover frequency (TOF) and In/Pt molar ratio. Among all tested catalysts, the Pt 0.5 In 1.0 /Sn-MFI sample exhibited the highest catalytic activity (1283 h –1 ), achieving 96.8% glycerol conversion with 73.5% LA selectivity, surpassing the monometallic Pt 0.5 /Sn-MFI catalyst. Furthermore, the Pt 0.5 In 1.0 /Sn-MFI catalyst maintained excellent stability, with no significant degradation in catalytic performance even after five consecutive recycling runs. Experimental analysis and characterizations verified the formation of PtIn 2 nanoalloys, accompanied by electron transfer from In to Pt, which significantly enhanced the catalysts’ O−H bond activation ability, resulting in high activity and selectivity. Combined with kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations, we further revealed that PtIn 2 nanoalloy active sites significantly reduce the activation energy barrier for the dehydrogenation of the secondary hydroxy group in the reaction pathway. This work offers new perspectives on the rational design of cost-effective, high-efficiency catalysts for the sustainable oxidation of glycerol to LA.

Lanthanum poly(heptazine imide) (La-PHI) is a novel, highly crystalline PHI material. However, its visible-light absorption remains weak due to the limited contribution of La 3+ to the band structure of PHI. Considering that the ionic radius of Sn 2+ is comparable to that of La 3+ , Sn 2+ can stably occupy the identical sites within the PHI framework. Meanwhile, the 5p orbitals of Sn 2+ can effectively hybridize with the N 2p orbitals, thereby introducing intermediate energy levels. Experimental results demonstrate that Sn 2+ doping generates an intermediate level at approximately 2.30 eV within the forbidden band, effectively broadening the light absorption range. Through optimizing the Sn 2+ doping amount, the photocatalytic activity of the obtained sample under 420 < λ < 780 nm is 5.3 times that of the original La-PHI. This study indicates that Sn 2 + doping is an effective strategy for extending the light absorption range, and the introduction of intermediate levels provides new insights into the design of highly efficient PHI-based photocatalysts.

The Sn-MOF reconstructed into a SnO nanoflower structure only upon electrolyte immersion. • The SnO nanoflower achieves >92% formate Faradaic efficiency in both H-cell and flow cell. • Its abundant grain boundaries and edge sites enhance the adsorption and stabilization of the *OCHO intermediate. • The nanoflower morphology remains stable during CO 2 reduction, contributing to sustained catalytic performance. Sn-based materials are promising for electrochemical CO 2 reduction to formate, yet the real active species and structural evolution under operating conditions remain elusive. Here, we track the spontaneous, potential-independent reconstruction of a Sn-terephthalic acid framework (Sn-PTA) in KHCO 3 electrolyte, revealing a two-stage transformation that dictates catalytic performance. Initially, the MOF decomposes into nanoflower-like SnO assemblies (Sn-PTA-180), characterized by abundant grain boundaries and edge sites that maximize active surface exposure. This metastable intermediate exhibits superior intrinsic activity, achieving a 92.7% formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) at 38.9 mA cm −2 in an H-cell and maintains 92.6% FE at 200 mA cm −2 in a flow cell. In situ ATR-SEIRAS correlates this performance to the optimized adsorption and stabilization of the *OCHO intermediate on the unique nanoflower architecture. Furthermore, we demonstrate that under cathodic bias, SnO undergoes a phase transition to metallic Sn while perfectly inheriting the advantageous morphology. This work elucidates electrolyte-driven MOF reconstruction as a powerful in situ route to engineer catalytically active interfaces, offering a new paradigm for designing high-performance pre-catalysts for efficient CO 2 -to-formate conversion. Acidic tin-based redox flow batteries (RFBs) represent a promising alternative to vanadium systems owing to their low cost, elemental abundance, and superior resistance to the hydrogen evolution reaction. However, nonuniform Sn electrodeposition and low active-material solubility severely impede their practical implementation. Herein, a heterogeneous nucleation strategy is proposed to regulate interfacial deposition by deliberately introducing dispersed SnSO 4 nanoparticles into concentrated sulfuric acid. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirms the formation of uniform colloidal seeds at an optimal precursor concentration of 0.3 M. Acting as in situ heterogeneous nucleation sites, such dispersed particles enable highly conformal and adherent Sn plating across carbon felt electrodes, strongly contrasting the localized agglomeration inherent to conventional homogeneous electrolytes. Coupled with a Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ posolyte, the resulting acidic Sn–Mn flow battery (TMFB) delivers exceptional stability, operating continuously for over 440 h at an areal capacity of 20 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the battery achieves an impressive average energy efficiency of 81.86% at 80 mA cm −2 alongside a remarkable peak power density of 346.05 mW cm −2 , outperforming most previously reported acidic RFBs. This work successfully transforms undissolved solid species into functional nucleates, establishing a general design principle for high-energy-density, cost-effective aqueous energy storage.

Aerobic Baeyer-Villiger (B-V) oxidation reaction in the presence of aldehydes is a promising environmental-friendly synthetic route for the synthesizing ε-Caprolactone. Bimetallic oxides catalysts have been regarded as a highly efficient heterogenous catalysts to boost the oxidation capability of O 2 . However, the lack of kinetic parameters for the bimetallic oxide catalysts hinders the large-scale production of ε-Caprolactone. Herein, a shaped Ce–Sn bimetallic oxide was utilized as model catalysts for the mechanism and kinetic study of aerobic B-V oxidation reaction. The effects of the shaping process on the physical structure, surface valence state distribution, and microstructure morphology of the catalyst were systematically examined. The shaped catalyst exhibits a higher selectivity and conversion rate than the powder counterparts due to the increase of surface area. The reaction mechanism was investigated through stepwise experiments, radical trapping experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Based on the mechanism study results, a stepwise kinetic model involving peroxidation of benzaldehyde, B-V reaction and oxidation of benzaldehyde was established and demonstrated good predictive capability for aerobic B-V oxidation reaction. This study provides stepwise kinetic parameters for the aerobic oxidation of cyclohexanone in the presence of benzaldehyde, which would significantly promote the engineering application of the aldehyde/oxygen catalytic oxidation process.

A simple and highly efficient one-pot synthesis protocol for producing isopropyl levulinate (IPL) in cascade reactions of furfural (FAL) with 2-propanol was established using dual-acidic Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) with adjustable acid properties. The dual-acidic POMs were synthesized via an ion-exchange strategy, where the H ions of Keggin-type heteropoly acid were partially replaced with metal chlorides. By varying the transition metal elements and Keggin units, the Lewis and Brønsted acid (LA and BA) properties of the prepared catalysts could be finely tuned, which can avoid the poor synergistic effect of traditional multi-component catalytic systems and the poor catalytic activity and selectivity caused by the lack of regulation of the LA and BA properties in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH)-alcoholysis cascade reactions. This work exhibited the highest FAL conversion of 95.4 % and IPL yield of 91.6 % over Sn 0.25 H 2 PW 12 O 40 at 443 K for 120 min, with a low activation energy ( E a ) of 32.74 kJ mol −1 , outperforming compared to traditional and commercial catalysts. The advantages of the strong LA acidity of Sn(IV) species and suitable ratio of LA-to-BA sites accelerated both the CTH and alcoholysis reaction processes. More importantly, the well synergistic effect of multiple active centers on clusters significantly played a crucial role in boosting catalytic performance. A plausible reaction mechanism was proposed based on experimental results, isotope tracing analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic performance of Sn 0.25 H 2 PW 12 O 40 remained unchanged after four cycles, which exhibited potential applications in one-pot cascade reactions. This study highlights the great potential of multifunctional Keggin-type POMs-based systems with multiple active centers for one-pot efficient conversion of biomass resources.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are attractive for large-scale energy storage and have to work at a wide temperature range. Compared to the performance at room temperature, the low-temperature performance of SIBs is always poor. Herein, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) are mixed as a model of weak solvating effect to improve the low-temperature performance. In the mixed electrolyte, the anion-dipole expulsion and steric hindrance in the solvation sheath increase, which weakens the cation-dipole attraction and reduces the desolvation energy. Meanwhile, the weak dipole-dipole interaction between THF and MTHF lowers the electrolyte viscosity and improves the ionic conductivity. The change in the solvation structure also results in an entropy increase, facilitates the cleavage of P-F in PF 6 ‾ , and the formation of NaF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Using commercial Sn microparticles as a model, the mixed electrolyte enables them to deliver a capacity of 328 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at −40 °C, much better than the cases only using THF or MTHF alone. The electrolyte can be also successfully adapted to Bi and hard carbon, confirming its good compatibility with different anode materials. These results provide an in-depth understanding of low-temperature electrolytes for advanced sodium-ion batteries.

As a key air pollutant, the efficient detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is of great significance for environmental monitoring. In this study, In 2 O 3 nanorods with different Sn doping concentrations (0–10 mol.%) were in-situ synthesized on Al 2 O 3 ceramic tubes via a one-step hydrothermal method combined with an annealing process. The structure, morphology, and NO 2 gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared materials were systematically investigated. Gas-sensing results demonstrate that 5 mol.% Sn-doped In 2 O 3 nanorods exhibit a high response (227.6) to 50 ppm NO 2 at 100 °C, which is 31 times that of pure In 2 O 3 (7.3). They also feature rapid response/recovery times (22 s/21 s), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability (response fluctuation <15 % over 30 days). Characterization results reveal that Sn 4 + is successfully incorporated into the In 2 O 3 lattice, leading to lattice contraction and an increase in oxygen vacancy content (oxygen vacancy ratio of 44.96 %). The gas-sensing mechanism, combining the adsorbed oxygen model with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, demonstrates that Sn doping enhances the adsorption energy and charge transfer between NO 2 and the sensing material.

Nitric oxides emission, especially nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), has aroused a series of environment and ecological problems and damaged human health, it is of great significance to monitor the NO 2 concentration in the atmosphere. However, developing the real-time NO 2 sensors remains challenge due to high working temperature, limited sensitivity at the low temperature and poor selectivity. Hence, we designed and synthesized the SnO 2 -M-O V - T sensors through thermal treating the Sn metal organic frameworks (Sn-MOF), and the prepared SnO 2 -M-O V - T sensors exhibits the excellent sensing performance under a low operating temperature. The response value of SnO 2 -M-O V -300 sensor for NO 2 could reach 11677 at 120 °C, that is 100 times than pristine SnO 2 , and the response value of 170 was also achieved even at the low temperature of 50 °C. In addition, the SnO 2 -M-O V -300 sensor also showed the good cyclicity and stability for NO 2 detection. Density functional theory results show that both the oxygen vacancy and Sn atom act as the adsorption and active sites during the process of NO 2 gas sensing, yet the role of oxygen vacancy prefers the adsorption and charge transfer for NO 2 than of Sn atom. The high-performance SnO 2 -M-O V - T gas sensors display a broad application prospect in the real-time monitoring NO 2 industrial field.

The interface of substances at high temperature is completely different from that at room temperature, which gives a chance to create some unprecedented physical and chemical properties. These interface-dominated properties can significantly improve the carrier transport kinetics. In this paper, we report on the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts involving P doped g-C 3 N 4 and SnO 2 , providing a first example of using high temperature interfacial chemistry to create P-Sn bonds between thermo-soften two-dimensional substance and hard oxide. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirmed the presence of P-Sn bonds in the heterogeneous catalysts of P doped g-C 3 N 4 and SnO 2 during the rapid thermal quenching process. Owing to the promoted fast separation of photogenerated carriers, P-Sn bond enriched catalyst exhibits the best Cr(VI) photoreduction performance among the g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts ever reported. Even at high Cr(VI) concentrations (at 500 ppm), this catalyst retains a high catalytic activity as well as good stability. High temperature interface chemistry produced by thermal quenching process will provide a universal methodology for constructing interfacial bonds and guiding the synthesis of new interfacial functional materials.
