Heterostructure Assembly of Zn-Substituted Fe3O4@NC/CuS@MoS2 for Enhanced Electrochemical Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticide Residues

Liu Bingbing,Yang Tianshuo,Liu Shuangshuang,Pan Hong,Ren Xiaoxuan,Zhang Haotian,Xu Yuanhui,Gao Faming

A hierarchical Zn-substituted Fe 3 O 4 @NC/CuS@MoS 2 heterostructure was rationally designed for the electrochemical detection of organophosphorus pesticides such as methamidophos and dichlorvos. Hollow Fe 2 O 3 nanospheres were synthesized hydrothermally, followed by Zn-substitution, polydopamine-derived nitrogen-doped carbon coating, and in situ growth of CuS@MoS 2 nanosheets. The Zn-substitution modulates the electronic structure, while the carbon network and the CuS@MoS 2 heterojunction synergistically enhance charge transfer kinetics, increase the electroactive surface area, provide abundant sites for acetylcholinesterase immobilization, and ensure favorable biocompatibility. The resulting enhanced interfacial electron transfer reduces the charge transfer resistance to 41.6 Ω. The biosensor exhibits broad linear ranges for methamidophos (7.09 × 10 –7 μM to 7.09 × 10 –2 μM) and dichlorvos (4.53 × 10 –7 μM to 4.53 × 10 –2 μM), with detection limits of 8.7 × 10 –8 μM and 2.0 × 10 –7 μM, respectively. Real-sample analysis in Chinese cabbage and apple yields recoveries of 96.36%–102.40% for methamidophos and 95.92%–101.77% for dichlorvos, confirming its practical viability for trace pesticide monitoring.

Enhancement of Corrosion Resistance and Antibacterial Performance of Magnesium Alloys via a Superhydrophobic Cu-MOFs/CuS Coating

Xianmei Yuan,Lei Fan,Rongjun Hu,Mingwei Wang,Lang Wu,Shanlin Wang,Fang Li,Jianwen Zhang

Magnesium alloys are used in ultrahigh voltage (UHV) insulator connections due to their high specific strength, vibration damping, and shielding properties. However, their low electrochemical potential (−2.37 V) leads to porous oxide films in tidal flats, humid conditions, and salt spray environments, causing pitting and cracking. Subsequently, microorganisms attach to the surface, secreting metabolites that acidify the area in synergy with Cl − , forming biofilm-corrosion coupling and accelerating failure. To address this, we developed a porous Cu-MOFs/CuS composite coating on AZ31B magnesium alloy using a hydrothermal method (160°C, 10 h) and stearic acid modification, creating a superhydrophobic surface (contact angle of 162°). After 50 cycles of simulated sandpaper abrasion, the contact angle remained above 150°, demonstrating superior mechanical stability compared to pure Cu-MOFs coatings. Immersion tests in acids, bases, and salts, as well as dynamic potentiodynamic polarization curves, proved that the Cu-MOFs/CuS composite coating has superior acid–base-salt stability and corrosion resistance compared to a pure MOFs coating. Moreover, the Cu 2+ released from the coating show high inhibitory and antibacterial effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, significantly reducing the risk of microbially induced corrosion. This provides an innovative solution for the long-term reliable service of magnesium alloys in UHV transmission and transformation equipment.

An Antioxidant Hydrogel Based on Chitosan/Dextran with Composited Polydopamine-Coated CuS for Synergistic Antibacterial Wound Healing

Xiaoting Zuo,Yu Zhang,Zhonghao Jia,Zhe Cui,Yong Wang,Wenjuan Li,Chengyan Zhou,Jianglei Qin

To cope with wound complications caused by bacterial infection, this study developed a polysaccharide-based hydrogel from a chitosan-tannic acid conjugate (CS-TA) and 3-aminophenylboronic acid-grafted dextran oxidant (ODP) through double-network cross-linking. The polydopamine-coated CuS nanoparticles (PDA@CuS) with photothermal properties and quercetin (QT) with antioxidant properties were loaded into the hydrogel to fabricate the multifunctional QT-PDA@CuS/hydrogel as a wound dressing. The mild photothermal effect of PDA@CuS, combined with the antimicrobial properties of CS-TA and quercetin, effectively inhibited Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with inhibition ratios of approximately 98.0% and 99.0%. Quercetin (QT), tannic acid, and polydopamine also confer superior antioxidant characteristics to the hydrogel, playing a crucial role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Moreover, this multifunctional hydrogel also facilitated angiogenesis and collagen deposition to promote the repair of infected skin wounds in vivo. In summary, the QT-PDA@CuS/hydrogel dressing holds significant potential for clinical applications in infected wound treatment.

Dual-function hollow CuS@CuInS2 heterostructures for rapid and potent bacterial inactivation via photothermal and catalytic mechanisms

Xu Mengchen,Li Bei,Yao Liping,Zhang Xiangxiang,Kong Jiaxin,Li Yanlin,Zheng Zhaoke,Li Xiaoyan

To combat rising bacterial infections, a hollow CuS@CuInS 2 heterostructure is engineered via ion-exchange and self-assembly. This hollow design provides dual photothermal/catalytic functions under visible/808 nm near-infrared irradiation, achieving high photothermal efficiency and stability. Integrating CuInS 2 quantum dots improves charge separation and extends carrier lifetimes compared to CuS alone. The architecture offers multiple reactive sites, enhancing photothermal Cu 2+ release and light-triggered ROS production. Combined heat, Cu 2+ , and ROS disrupt bacterial membranes, cause nucleic acid leakage, and eliminate >90% of S. aureus in 15 min (2.5 mg mL −1 ). The material shows favorable biocompatibility and negligible hemolysis. By synergizing multiple bactericidal pathways, this solar-responsive agent offers an effective solution for bacterial infections.

Multifunctional TA-CuS NPs-based conductive hydrogel with antibacterial capability for wearable real-time human motion sensor

Lijia Zhao,Shuang Ma,Huan Wang,Zekun Chen,Ren Wang,Guiye Shan

Hydrogel-based flexible sensors have attracted significant attention in the fields of motion sensing. However, the construction of hydrogel substrate with long-term stability for humid and sweating conditions sensing still remains challenging. Herein, tannic acid-modified copper sulfide nanoparticles (TA-CuS NPs)-based multifunctional hydrogel with excellent adhesion, mechanical strength, swelling ability and antibacterial properties was developed as wearable sensor for sensitive and durable motion monitoring in moist environments. The hydrogel, containing abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, allows dynamic cross-linking with sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAM), improving tensile strain to 1590 % and adhesion strength to 32 kPa. Meanwhile, its electrical conductivity increased from 0.02403 S·m −1 to 0.11432 S·m −1 , attributed to the formation of conductive pathways and interfacial interactions between TA-CuS NPs and polymer chains. Additionally, the incorporation of ions and hydrophilic functional groups within the hydrogel imparts superior swelling behavior and ionic conductivity, which facilitates sweat adsorption and stable signal transmission. Further, the peroxidase-like (POD)-like activity of TA-CuS NPs-based hydrogel promotes the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH), effectively inhibiting the growth of both Staphylococcus aureus (88.0 %) and Escherichia coli (93.8 %) within 24 h. As a result, this multifunctional flexible hydrogel-based sensor, endowed with sweat management and antibacterial capability can achieve the real-time and reliable human motion monitoring in wet scenarios with the working range of 0–500 %, and can further combine with designed integrated circuit and Bluetooth for wireless signals output. This designed wireless system allows for the recognition of various motions and provides early warnings of harmful motions, demonstrating the potential for practical application in the field of wearable sensing.

Design and evaluation of PVA/Alg/HANFs@CuS composite membranes: Balance between mechanical reinforcement and antibacterial performances

Shan Zhang,Meng-chen Xu,Yu-peng Lu,Yi-tong Jiang,Shuo-chao You,Ya-hao Geng,Xiao-yan Li,Gui-yong Xiao

Biomedical dressings are highly susceptible to bacterial infections, and most suffer from poor mechanical resistance, leading to structural damage during application and reduced effectiveness. Therefore, developing novel dressings with high mechanical strength and effective antibacterial ability is essential. In this study, a multi-component composite membrane is designed to address these challenges by leveraging the reinforcing effect of hydroxyapatite nanofibers (HANFs) and the photothermal antibacterial abilities of copper sulfide (CuS). This composite membrane exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with a maximum ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus of 61 ± 1.25 MPa and 937.36 ± 16.15 MPa, respectively, in the dry state. Under near infrared (NIR) irradiation, the generated heat and released Cu 2+ produce a synergistic antibacterial effect, with the inhibition rate against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) exceeding 90 % when the HANFs@CuS content reaches 40 wt%. Cellular experiments confirm the good biocompatibility of the composite membranes across different HANFs@CuS contents, with cell viability maintaining over 80 % at 40 wt%. This study seamlessly integrates the mechanical advantage of HANFs with the photothermal antibacterial ability of CuS nanoparticles , providing a promising strategy for designing advanced biomedical dressings.

Interfacial Electric State Reconstruction of CuS Nanosheets via Indium-Doping for Electro-Removal of Heavy Metal Anions

Guangzhen Liu,Zhenglin Chen,Tian Liu,Xunsheng Guo,Xianchuan Xie,Liming Yang,Xubiao Luo

Electro-reductive removal of heavy metal anions holds great potential for clean production. However, its application is hindered by a low removal efficiency and high energy consumption, due to inefficient electron and mass transfer under strong electrostatic repulsion and the occurrence of undesirable side reactions. In this study, we doped atomic In into the CuS nanoparticles to modify the built-in electric state of the CuS lattice, thus enhancing the reduction and removal of Cr2O72– (Cr(VI)). The In-doped CuS electrode (0.08In-CuS) achieves a 100% reduction efficiency for Cr(VI) within 20 min, with a Faradaic efficiency of 97.42%, and completely removes total Cr within 100 min, with kinetic constants five times higher than those of CuS. Detailed characterization and theoretical simulations revealed that the introduction of atomic In results in the deformation of the triangularly coordinated and tetrahedrally coordinated Cu layers and the displacement of atoms in the CuS lattice. The electron-deficient state of In resulted in a polarization of the electron distribution of Cu, thus promoting strong adsorption of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III). This work highlights the necessity of modulating the intrinsic electric field of the electrode surface in order to achieve the effective removal of heavy metal anions.

NIR-activatable proenzyme DSF/CuS@M for synergistic in situ chemotherapy/CDT/PTT/cuproptosis-based antitumor therapy

Lushuang Xu,Qinyue Chen,Yangwei Qian,Jin Wang,Chenxi Wang,Rui Fan,Jia-Wei Shen,Qiying Shen

Nanozymes provide therapeutic benefits against a diverse range of malignant tumors. However, their antitumor potencies are seriously impaired by their low catalytic efficiencies and the off-target toxicities caused by their “always-on” catalytic activity. Herein, we developed multifunctional nanoparticles co-loaded with ultra-small copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) and disulfiram (DSF) (DSF/CuS@M). These nanoparticles had peroxidase-like activity and served as (near-infrared) NIR-activatable proenzymes to achieve synergistic in situ chemotherapy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and cuproptosis-based antitumor therapy. DSF/CuS@M not only provided PTT as NIR-activatable proenzymes but also enabled complete DSF and Cu 2+ release. Non-toxic DSF was converted into diethyldithiocarbamic acid (DDC) through a glutathione (GSH)-mediated metabolic reaction, leading to the generation of cytotoxic Cu(DDC) 2 in situ , which enhanced cell apoptosis. Cu 2+ was converted into Cu + by GSH, and this Cu + catalyzed the conversion of H 2 O 2 into hydroxyl radicals (·OH) to induce CDT. Moreover, Cu + could also bind to dihydrolipoyl transacetylase (DLAT) in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, thereby inducing cuproptosis. These results demonstrate that the NIR-activatable proenzyme developed in this study is effective and safe for synergistic therapy against malignant tumors.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Coated CuS as Efficient Anodes for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries with High Capacity and Long Life

Xinying Liu,Jing Zhao,Yao Zhao,Xiaolan Chen,Zhaohui Li,Gangtie Lei

In this work, CuS@PVP nanospheres with large specific surface areas were successfully prepared via a one-step hydrothermal process by introducing the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant into the precursor and modulating its dosage. As an anode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, the prepared CuS@PVP can shorten the transmission distance of Zn2+ and electrons and increase the number of reaction sites. CuS@PVP with 0.2 g of PVP added has a specific capacity of 305.4 mAh g–1 at a current density of 0.2 A g–1 and an ultralong cycle life of 2000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g–1. In addition, the capacity of the CuS@PVP||Na–MnO2 full cell is as high as 220.0 mAh g–1 at a current density of 0.2 A g–1, and the capacity retention rate is 85.9% after 100 cycles. The results prove that CuS@PVP is an excellent choice as an anode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Multifunctional CuS-based micro-flower loaded with carbon dots/laccase for effectively detection and removal of catechol

Shuxing Zhou,Yin Wang,Wenyu Cao

The miniaturization and autonomous mobility of the artificial micro-composite have gained widespread interest and attention in the field of catechol treatment. Unfortunately, it is a bottleneck for micro-composite in realizing the integration of multiple functions such as colorimetric detection and removal of catechol. Herein, we construct a Janus micro-composite with dual functions of detection and degradation for the efficient detection and removal of catechol. The Janus micro-composite for laccase immobilization was prepared by growing manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO 2 NPs) on the hemisphere of copper sulfide (CuS) loaded with carbon (C) dots (Lac-MnO 2 @C@CuS). The half-coated MnO 2 NPs is used as a power source to generate oxygen (O 2 ), which drives the Janus micro-composite for autonomous directional motion at a speed of 178.83 ± 2.07 μm/s in the presence of 5 wt% H 2 O 2 . The Janus micro-composite with excellent peroxidase-like properties could display sensitive detection of catechol with the detection limits of 0.49 μM in range of 0–100 μM. Furthermore, the Janus micro-composite could decompose H 2 O 2 to produce abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) through Fenton reaction , which could promote the removal rate of catechol up to 96.6%. This is a promising micro-composite platform for integrated autonomous movement and simultaneous detection/removal of catechol, which can provide a new perspective for water environment treatment.

AIEgen-Functionalized Mesoporous Silica Gated by Cyclodextrin-Modified CuS for Cell Imaging and Chemo-Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Qing-Lan Li,Duo Wang,Yuanzheng Cui,Zhiying Fan,Li Ren,Dongdong Li,Jihong Yu

A novel multifunctional drug delivery system has been constructed by assembling per-6-thio-β-cyclodextrin-modified ultrasmall CuS nanoparticles (CD-CuS) onto fluorescent AIEgen-containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (FMSN). The CD-CuS nanoparticles are anchored on the surface of benzimidazole-grafted FMSN, acting as a gatekeeper and photothermal agent. The prepared blue-emitting nanocomposite (FMSN@CuS) exhibits good biocompatibility and cell imaging capability. Anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) molecules are loaded into FMSN@CuS, and zero prerelease at physiological pH (7.4) and on-demand drug release at an acidic environment can be achieved due to the pH-responsive gate-opening of CD-CuS only at an acidic condition. The FMSN@CuS nanocomposite can generate obvious thermal effect after the exposure of 808 nm laser, which can also accelerate the DOX release. Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity of DOX-loaded FMSN@CuS increases with the release of DOX, and the intracellular drug release process can be tracked according to the change of luminescence intensity. More importantly, DOX-loaded FMSN@CuS displays efficient anticancer effects in vitro upon 808 nm laser irradiation, demonstrating a good synergistic therapeutic effect via combining enhanced chemotherapy and photothermal therapy.
