A cuprous oxide decorated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) multi-layer graphene modified glassy carbon electrode (Cu 2 O/PEDOT/rGO/GCE) was fabricated via a stepwise electrodeposition process, then used as a non-enzymatic sensor for glucose detection. The structure and morphology of Cu 2 O/PEDOT/rGO film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical tests showed that the Cu 2 O/PEDOT/rGO/GCE offered excellent performance for the detection of glucose, including high sensitivity of 4700 μA cm −2 mM −1 in the linear range from 0.004 to 3.2 mM, and low detection limit of 0.14 μM. These results suggest that Cu 2 O/PEDOT/rGO/GCE is an outstanding non-enzymatic sensor for the detection of glucose. The excellent response can be attributed to the unique multi-layered graphene structure of the modified electrode, in which highly conductive PEDOT enhances the electrocatalytic oxidation activity of cuprous oxide nanoparticles.

Marine biofouling is one of the technical bottlenecks restricting the development of the global marine economy. Among the commercial self-polishing antifouling coatings, cuprous oxide is an irreplaceable component because of its efficiency and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. However, one of the biggest obstacles to achieving long-term antifouling is the “initial burst and final decay” of cuprous oxide in the coating. Here, we lock the copper ions by establishing an antifouling unit composed of Cu2O (core) and Cu-based metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF, shell). Cu-MOF is densely grown in situ on the periphery of Cu2O by acid proton etching. The shell structure of Cu-MOF can effectively improve the stability of the internal Cu2O and thus achieve the stable and slow release of copper ions. Furthermore, Cu2O@Cu-MOF nanocapsules can also achieve active defense by rapid and complete dissolution of Cu2O@Cu-MOF at local acidic microenvironment (pH ≤ 5) where the adhesion of fouling organisms occurs. Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy is used to explain the sterilization mechanism. Relying on the water- and acid-sensitive properties of Cu-MOF shell, the stable, controlled and efficient release of copper ions has been achieved for the Cu2O@Cu-MOF nanocapsules in the self-polishing antifouling coatings. Thus, these controlled-release nanocapsules make long-term antifouling promising.

To achieve stable and efficient photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), this study presents a composite photocatalyst where a polydopamine (PDA) layer was formed on cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) supraparticles via a straightforward self-polymerization of dopamine. By maintaining a constant amount of Cu 2 O and tuning the PDA concentration, the optimal formulation exhibiting the highest H 2 O 2 yield was identified. Structural and chemical analyses confirmed the uniform PDA coating and demonstrated that the composite effectively suppressed H 2 O 2 decomposition and maintained excellent stability over repeated cycles. This enhanced performance is attributed to improved charge transfer pathways between Cu 2 O and PDA. The band structure and electron transfer analysis further revealed that the composite follows a p-n type-Ⅱ heterojunction mechanism, enabling selective H 2 O 2 generation via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). We expect that this simple one-pot approach to constructing high-efficiency, scalable, and stable photocatalysts will offer new opportunities for green energy conversion and environmental remediation.

In this study, cubic Cu 2 O nanoparticles (Cu 2 O-c NPs), truncated octahedral Cu 2 O NPs (Cu 2 O-t), and octahedral Cu 2 O NPs (Cu 2 O-o) were prepared using a chemical reduction method by regulating the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), respectively. Cu 2 O NPs were composited with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via an ultrasonication-assisted assembly method, and drop-casted onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to construct Cu 2 O/rGO/GCE for accurately electrochemical detection of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC). Due to the highly active Cu 2 O-o (111) facets, Cu 2 O-o/rGO/GCE fabricated from Cu 2 O-o and rGO exhibited the highest sensitivity and electrocatalytic activity. The linear range of CTC by Cu 2 O-o/rGO/GCE under the optimized experimental conditions is 50 ∼ 600 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD: 3σ/k) is 10.41 μM. The recoveries obtained from spiked actual samples of commercial CTC ointment are in the range of 94.5%∼104.4%.

Cu-Co nanoalloys were constructed and employed to drive electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (ENRA). Comprehensive structure and electrochemical characterizations combined with theoretical calculations decipher that Co incorporation elevates the d -band center and keeps moderate aqueous *H supply, facilitating adsorption and hydrogenation of nitrate and oxynitride intermediates. Crucially, an efficiently integrated Cu 2 O/CoO heterojunction emerged on the surface of the Cu-Co nanoalloy. Spontaneous local charge redistribution at the Cu 2 O/CoO interface gives rise to distinct nucleophilic and electrophilic regions. Such heterogeneous structure is favourable for targeted asymmetric bridge adsorption of oxynitrides (*NO 2 , *NO), thus promoting breakage of N-O bond and suppressing the accumulation and desorption of intermediates. As a result, CuCo 3 exhibits excellent ENRA performance, featured with a nitrate removal rate of 74.7%, an ammonia selectivity of 98.7%, and a Faradaic efficiency of 90.2% at −0.6 V vs. RHE under neutral electrolyte. Coupling ENRA with an air stripping process, high purity solid NH 4 Cl is successfully obtained with a nitrogen recovery rate of 80% in conjunction with a high energy efficiency of 73%, demonstrating the practical feasibility of converting nitrate-containing wastewater into value-added ammonia products.

Antimicrobial coatings with self-cleaning and long-lasting antibacterial properties are critical for medical applications to reduce healthcare-associated infections. However, existing coatings pose challenges of poor durability, limited light response, or rapid antibacterial agent loss. Herein, we report a scalable strategy to fabricate a Cu 2 O/TiO 2 composite coating (CT-37, Cu:Ti = 3:7 mass ratio) via in-situ chemical reduction and two-step semi-curing spraying, integrating hierarchical micro-nanostructured Cu₂O/TiO₂ particles with lithium polysilicate adhesive. CT-37 exhibits good superhydrophobicity (contact angle ( θ CA ) = 151.3 ± 1.4°, roll-off angle ( θ RA ) =3.4 ± 0.4°), retaining a θ CA > 150° after 10 abrasion cycles and 7 days of acid/alkali immersion. Under visible light, it achieves >99% sterilization efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and maintains a > 90% bactericidal rate after 50 cycles. This study reveals a novel synergistic mechanism: (i) superhydrophobicity reduces bacterial adhesion by minimizing solid-liquid contact area; (ii) rapid Cu ion release from the coating matrix directly inhibits bacterial proliferation; (iii) photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, including •O 2 − , h + , and •OH) under visible light further eradicates adhered microbes. This cost-effective coating, coupled with the deepening understanding of its antimicrobial mechanism, paves the way for large-scale medical and public health applications.

Electrocatalytic nitrate ( \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) ) reduction to ammonia (NH 3 ) offers a viable approach for sustainable NH 3 production and environmental denitrification. Copper (Cu) possesses a distinctive electronic structure, which can augment the reaction kinetics of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) and impede hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rendering it a promising contender for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 from \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) . Nevertheless, the role of Cu 2 O in copper-based catalysts still requires further investigation for a more comprehensive understanding. Herein, the Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructures are successfully fabricated through liquid laser irradiation using CuO nanoparticles as a precursor. Experimental and theoretical researches reveal that Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructure exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 because Cu(OH) 2 promotes electron transfer and reduces the valence state of Cu active site in Cu 2 O. At −0.6 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), the NH 3 yield reaches its maximum at 1630.66 ± 29.72 \({\rm{\mu g}} \cdot {{\rm{h}}^{ - 1}} \cdot {\rm{m}}{{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{cat}}}}^{ - 1}\) , while the maximum of Faraday efficiency (FE) is 76.95% ± 5.51%. This study expands the technical scope of copper-based catalyst preparation and enhances the understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 .

Vitamin E plays a vital role in maintaining human health as well as in the prevention and treatment of related diseases. However, current methods for detecting vitamin E suffer from complex instrumentation, high cost, and cumbersome operation, making it difficult to meet the demand for rapid detection in serum samples. Herein, we designed an iron-doped cuprous oxide (Fe-Cu2O) nanozyme for the colorimetric detection of vitamin E in human serum. Impressively, the Fe-Cu2O nanozyme exhibits a 7.2-fold enhancement in peroxidase (POD)-like activity compared with the pure Cu2O nanozyme. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the Fe-Cu2O nanozyme catalyzes the decomposition of H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), thereby oxidizing colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue product (ox TMB). As a reducing agent, vitamin E can fade the blue ox TMB, enabling the quantitative determination of vitamin E. Under optimized experimental conditions, the as-prepared Fe-Cu2O nanozyme achieves a linear detection range of 2–80 µM toward vitamin E with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.89 µM. This approach holds promise as a straightforward, economical, and highly effective strategy for clinical diagnosis and health screening of vitamin E and other bioactive molecules.

Traditional wound dressings lack antibacterial properties and may cause wound damage during dressing changes, impairing healing. Therefore, single-function dressings cannot meet the multifaceted requirements of modern wound healing processes. This study successfully prepared a Cu 2 O/PDA-MMT by loading cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu 2 O NPs) onto polydopamine (PDA)-modified montmorillonite (MMT), which was then incorporated with chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via a one-step blending method to fabricate CS/PVA/Cu 2 O/PDA-MMT hydrogels. Characterization techniques including XRD, FTIR, TG, and SEM confirmed the successful preparation of the material, while systematic evaluation demonstrated its physicochemical properties such as gel fraction, porosity, and mechanical performance. Antimicrobial experiments, cell compatibility tests, mouse tail-amputation hemorrhage models, and full-thickness skin wound infection models demonstrated that the 1% CS/PVA/Cu 2 O/PDA-MMT hydrogel not only exhibited over 95% antimicrobial inhibition rates against both test bacterial strains but also possessed excellent biocompatibility. It significantly reduced blood loss in rat tail hemorrhage models. When treating full-thickness skin wounds, this hydrogel effectively controlled infection, accelerated healing, achieved a wound healing rate exceeding 97% by day 12, and promoted tissue regeneration. These outstanding properties position it as a wound dressing material with significant clinical application potential.

Ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis via nitrate reduction offers a sustainable energy conversion and mitigates aquatic NO 3 − pollution, yet most catalysts require high overpotentials for appreciable NH 3 yields. Here, we report a sulfur-leaching strategy to transform Cu 1.8 S/Ru heterostructures into a small CuRu-Cu 2 O nanocomposite with abundant heterointerfaces, enabling strong electronic coupling between CuRu and Cu 2 O particles, synergistically enhancing NO 3 – adsorption and reaction kinetics. The optimized catalyst achieves 95.4% NH 3 Faradaic efficiency at a low potential of 0.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, stable over 30 cycles. Operando spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal the incorporation of Ru facilitates active hydrogen generation, alleviating the energy barrier for hydrogenation steps at heterointerfaces. The catalyst demonstrates high stability in a membrane electrode assembly at 450 mA cm –2 over 200 h and enables a Zinc-NO 3 – battery operation exceeding 50 h, offering a design model for durable, active nanocomposites in sustainable NH 3 synthesis.

Microbial evolution, combined with antibiotic overuse, has accelerated the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These bacteria pose significant risks to human health and the ecological environment. To address this challenge, researchers are increasingly focusing on multifunctional nanostructures with multiple antimicrobial mechanisms. Herein, Cu2O/AuPt3 was rapidly generated by the in situ reduction of Au3+ and Pt4+ on the surface of Cu2O NPs. The decorated AuPt NPs confer Cu2O/AuPt3 with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of ∼56.89% within 200 s and endow the obtained material with multienzyme-mimicking activity, including peroxidase (POD)-, oxidase (OXD)-, and glutathione oxidase (GSHOx)-like activities. Cu2O/AuPt3 nanoparticles showed low toxicity toward L929 cells when the concentration was below 40 μg·mL–1. In vitro antibacterial tests demonstrated that the synergistic antibacterial mechanism resulted in effective and long-lasting antibacterial properties against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Cu2O/AuPt3 exhibited superior rapid bactericidal capability compared to vancomycin (VAN), and it retained good bactericidal activity even in 40% human serum. Furthermore, Cu2O/AuPt3 could keep silk fibroin free from S. aureus contamination for at least one month at a concentration of 40 μg·mL–1. This study provides useful information for further research on composite materials with multienzyme-mimicking activity.

Incorporation of the traditional Fenton catalysis technique with other advanced wastewater purification technology is a effective strategy for large-scale water pollution treatment, this potency of co-processing treatment technology on the degradation of organic pollutant effluents is more efficient and preferable. In this study, a innovation based on photothermal enhanced photo-electro Fenton tactics based on alloyed snowflake-sharped Pt modified Cu 2 O nanoclusters (SSPt-Cu 2 O NCs) were prepared by using a typical hydrothermal method. The alloying design is conducive to electron transfer to improve catalytic efficiency. Meanwhile, the SSPt-Cu 2 O NCs have excellent photothermal properties (over 50 °C) to increase the catalytic reaction rate under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Then dyestuff Rhodamine B (RhB) was used as model contaminants to evaluate the degradation capacity of the as-synthesized SSPt-Cu 2 O NCs by simultaneously append NIR laser (808 nm, 2.0 W•cm −2 , 5 min) and direct current (DC, 110 V, 50 Hz, Cv≤1 mvrms CC≤5 mARms). The degradation efficiency for reach up to could reach up to 96.13 % in a 2-h treatment procedure by using the photo-electro Fenton catalyst (1.0 mg/mL of RhB, catalyst concentration at 1.0 mg•mL −1 , and pH at 7.0). Moreover, the SSPt-Cu 2 O NCs photo-electro Fenton catalyzers show goodish reusability and outstanding atoxic nontoxicity for environment application, which designating the potential candidate for organic pollutional chemicals in wastewater management.
