Background Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit is extensively used as a medicinal and edible resource in China due to its unique bioactivities. In this research, we aimed to characterize its phenolic acid composition and investigate the potential hypolipidemic effect of this plant in a rat model of hyperlipidemia. Methods We evaluated the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit (HRT) on serum lipids, body weight, activities of lipoprotein metabolism and antioxidant enzymes, and gene expression of lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats. Results HRT significantly reduced body weight gain and decreased serum and liver lipid levels in the hyperlipidemic rats. In addition, HRT treatment improved the activities of antioxidant enzymes, lipoprotein lipase, and hepatic lipase, downregulated the mRNA and protein expressions of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c and acetyl CoA carboxylase, and upregulated the mRNA and protein expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α and low-density lipoprotein receptor in hepatic tissue. Conclusions The results showed that Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit is rich in phenolic acids, and that it exerted lipid lowering effects in the hyperlipidemic rats.

Double-layer fibers control gaseous microenvironment, suppressing respiration. • Double-layer fibers possesses high selectivity of CO 2 and O 2 . • The dual mechanism—gas regulation and bioactive—prolongs the quality of fruits. Respiration is the primary driver of postharvest deterioration in highly perishable fruits, as both plant tissues and associated microorganisms rapidly consume available nutrients and accelerate quality loss. Modulating the surrounding gaseous environment is therefore critical for mitigating respiration-the most important factor of driving spoilage. In this study, double-layer fiber films with selective gas permeability were developed to regulate O 2 and CO 2 levels within localized microenvironments. Their asymmetric structure established a mildly hypoxic and CO 2 -enriched atmosphere, achieving a gas selectivity of 11.39 ± 0.88 and effectively lowering respiratory intensity. The fibers also provided antibacterial and antioxidative functions, contributing to reduced microbial contamination and oxidative degradation. When applied to litchi, the films extended the effective commercial shelf life to approximately 9 days and significantly delayed overall spoilage throughout a 15-day evaluation period under controlled storage conditions. Beyond their demonstrated efficacy, these fibers show considerable potential for advancing food preservation strategies, offering meaningful opportunities for more sustainable packaging solutions. Their dual-action mechanism—integrating gas regulation with biological active—positions them as a versatile material platform for addressing spoilage challenges in highly perishable fruits. Current nanofibrous membranes demonstrate unique advantages in encapsulating active substances for extending food freshness, but their practical applications are limited by safety concerns from high-voltage electric fields and complex facility requirements. To address these issues, we developed myricetin (Myr)-loaded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibrous membranes (TPU@Myr n ) via solution blow spinning (SBS). This technique enables direct deposition onto produce surfaces for in-situ packaging without electrical hazards. The resulting membranes exhibited smooth and uniform fiber morphology with excellent mechanical properties. The optimized formulation, TPU@Myr 7 (7% myricetin loading), demonstrated strong antioxidant activity with free radical scavenging rates exceeding 90%, and effective antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (99.4% and 99.2% inhibition, respectively). Crucially, TPU@Myr 7 achieved sustained release of Myr over 4 days, significantly reducing strawberry spoilage during 10 days preservation. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited good biocompatibility, and can be safely used for food contact. This work demonstrates the potential of myricetin-loaded nanofibers for in-situ fruit packaging, providing a flexible, safe, and scalable packaging solutions for post-harvest preservation applications.

Sponge-based preservative packaging is an emerging approach to mitigate mechanical damage to fruits and vegetables during transportation, storage, and retail. However, conventional polyurethane sponges generally lack durable antibacterial activity and are neither biodegradable nor readily recyclable. Herein, to address these limitations, silver nanoparticles immobilized on TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF@AgNPs) were incorporated into a quaternized chitin matrix to construct a synergistic antibacterial composite sponge (QCH/TCNF@AgNPs) for fruit preservation. The composite sponge exhibited strong antibacterial efficacy againstEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureus, together with a low cumulative release of silver species of 2.49% after 336 h. In addition, the sponge showed >50% mass loss after 36 days in lysozyme solution, indicating good enzymatic degradability. Cytocompatibility assays further confirmed favorable biocompatibility and biosafety. Notably, the composite sponge provided satisfactory preservation performance for fresh strawberries. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential of QCH/TCNF@AgNPs as a biodegradable antibacterial packaging sponge for fruit preservation.

Dragon fruit ( Hylocereus spp.) is widely cultivated in Southeast Asia and is known for its nutritional and medicinal properties. Despite this potential, dragon fruit peel remains an underutilized by-product, while previous studies have largely focused on antioxidant activity, membrane-stabilizing effects, or enzyme-based anti-inflammatory assays, with limited evidence on cytokine modulation in human macrophages. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of crude extracts and solvent-partitioned fractions from Hylocereus costaricensis (red flesh) and H. undatus (white flesh), and to characterize the phytochemical profiles of the most active fractions. Crude extracts were prepared using 80% ethanol and subsequently fractionated with hexane, ethyl acetate, and butanol. Cytotoxicity was assessed in phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-differentiated THP-1 human macrophages using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay, while anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated THP-1 macrophages by quantifying interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). All samples demonstrated low cytotoxicity up to 500 µg/mL. The peel hexane fractions showed the most pronounced cytokine suppression, particularly against IL-1β (81–84%) and IL-6 (74–75%), whereas TNF-α inhibition was moderate. Concentration–response studies revealed that the H. undatus peel hexane fraction was the most potent with IC 50 of 5.73 µg/mL and 76.64 µg/mL for IL-1β and IL-6, respectively. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) identified β-amyrin and campesterol in both active fractions, while gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) detected fatty acids, tocopherols, and triterpenoids. Although H. costaricensis peel contained higher levels of β-amyrin (0.59%) and campesterol (2.83%), H. undatus peel (0.15% β-amyrin; 1.86% campesterol) showed stronger cytokine inhibition, suggesting that multiple lipophilic constituents may contribute to the observed activity. These findings indicate that dragon fruit peel lipophilic fractions are promising sources of cytokine-suppressive constituents and provide analytical support for the valorization of this underutilized by-product as functional food or nutraceutical ingredients.

Ethylene biosynthesis during postharvest ripening of tomato fruit is stimulated by the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA). This research utilized mature green cherry tomato fruit to elucidate the molecular mechanism of SlAREB1 regulating ethylene biosynthesis and mediating ABA’s effect on postharvest ripening of tomato fruit. Results indicated that ABA treatment expedited alterations in fruit color, firmness, ethylene release rate, and modulated the expression of SlAREB1 and genes associated with ethylene biosynthesis. Meanwhile, SlAREB1 was proven to participate in the regulatory process of ABA on tomato fruit ripening. The results of yeast one-hybrid and dual luciferase assays demonstrated that SlAREB1 interacted with the promoters of ACS2, ACO1, FUL1, and MADS1, and activated their transcriptions, thereby regulating ethylene biosynthesis and subsequently affecting the ripening process of postharvest tomato fruit. The molecular model illustrates that SlAREB1 is a downstream component of ABA signaling that directly regulates ethylene-related genes, thereby mediating ABA’s effect. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further improving the regulatory network of hormone interactions during tomato fruit ripening.

Nylon shrinkage effect generates dense SERS hotspots. • Ultrahigh sensitivity, achieving a detection limit of 10 −9 M for the probe molecule R6G. • Excellent uniformity and reproducibility, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.14% across 50 random spots. • Superior long-term stability, retaining 89.23% of the initial SERS signal after 30 days of storage. • Paste-and-peel method for in-situ CBZ detection on fruit. To address the widespread issue of carbendazim (CBZ), a common pesticide residue, on the surfaces of fruits and vegetables, our research team prepared silver nanoparticles using the sodium citrate reduction method and successfully loaded them onto a nylon membrane substrate via vacuum-assisted filtration. Subsequently, the substrate was modified with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as an internal standard signaling molecule, yielding a Nylon-Ag@4MBA flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate. The as-prepared Nylon-Ag@4MBA substrate exhibited excellent uniformity (RSD = 5.14%), a detection limit as low as 10 −9 M for the R6G probe molecule, and a signal retention rate of 89.23% after 30 days of storage. In the detection of actual samples such as apples, the recovery rates of CBZ ranged from 95.05% to 96.90% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 4.07%, demonstrating reliable quantitative capability. No interference was observed from common substances on the fruit peel. This study confirms the potential application of the Nylon-Ag@4MBA substrate for the on-site rapid detection of pesticide residues. Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is common in acidic orchard soils and can limit fruit crop growth and quality. This study evaluated whether foliar-applied magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) could improve Mg nutrition and fruit quality in ‘Ninghaibai’ loquat grown under Mg-deficient acidic soil conditions. Pot and field experiments were conducted using water as the control and MgSO 4 -50eq as an equimolar Mg comparator. MgO NPs showed a concentration-dependent effect, and 200 mg/L produced the best overall performance among the tested concentrations. At this concentration, total biomass increased by 47.27%, compared with CK, accompanied by enhanced chlorophyll accumulation, antioxidant enzyme activities, and Mg uptake. In fruit, 200 mg/L MgO NPs increased soluble solids content by 45.67% and reduced titratable acidity by 53.26%, while also improving fruit size and sugar–acid balance. Leaf transcriptome analysis suggested that MgO NPs altered the expression of genes involved in metabolism, stress response, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. At the 50 mg/L level, MgO NPs produced stronger responses than the equimolar MgSO 4 treatment in Mg uptake, nutrient acquisition, and several fruit-quality traits. However, excessive application at 500 mg/L weakened growth and quality improvement. Overall, foliar application of 200 mg/L MgO NPs may represent a promising strategy for improving loquat growth and fruit quality under the tested Mg-deficient conditions.

In this study, a simple one-pot method was employed to synthesize an iron-nickel-carbon composite material. Glucose-derived mesoporous carbon spheres (CS) were used as a template, while urea served as a linking agent. Well-defined iron-nickel nanoparticles (Fe-Ni NPs) were incorporated into the CS to form a passion fruit-shaped structure. The resulting FeNi/CS catalyst exhibits excellent synergistic effects, effectively promoting electron transfer and charge migration. This composite material also demonstrates outstanding electrocatalytic performance for detecting nitrobenzene (NB). The results show a wide detection linear range from 1 to 1000 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.12 μM, as well as good anti-interference capability and high sensitivity. Furthermore, NB monitoring in real water samples yields satisfactory recovery rates ranging from 97.18 % to 102.75 %. The unique electrochemical sensor offers a novel approach for NB detection.

Hydrogels derived from natural biomass are viewed as promising alternatives to petroleum-based fruit packaging due to the unique features of sustainable nature, biosafety, and environmental friendliness. However, biological macromolecules (e.g., polysaccharide and protein) generally lack antibacterial effect and UV shielding performance while existing hydrogels assembled from herbal small molecules (HSMs) are inadequate in mechanical properties, adhesion, and film-forming ability. To address this, we proposed a simple physical mixing method to construct supramolecular hydrogel based on tannic acid (TA) and stevioside (St) for fruit preservation. The monomers were proved to co-assemble into dense network structure driven by hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions. Besides the good mechanical property, adhesion capability (87.55 kPa on polytetrafluoroethylene), and biocompatibility, the TA-St hydrogel exhibited excellent gas barrier (5.31 and 20.01 g/(m 2 ·h) for oxygen barrier and water vapor barrier, respectively), UV blocking performance (<350 nm), antioxidant activity (>86.66 %), and antibacterial ability (>99.99 %). Profiting from these comprehensive performances, the hydrogels were demonstrated to effectively reduce weight loss and maintain the fruit quality, significantly prolonging the shelf life to 12 days for blueberries. Notably, the TA-St hydrogel film possessing washability and biodegradability (5 days in soil) could be easily removed from the fruit surfaces. This work provides a new strategy to develop binary HSM-based supramolecular hydrogels with multifunctionality, boosting their applications in the fields of sustainable fruit preservation.

Carbon dots (CDs) have elicited attention in photodynamic antimicrobial applications, but their susceptibility to aggregation limits their effectiveness. Herein, CDs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites are synthesized. The results reveal that they have superior dual photodynamic enhanced antimicrobial properties, specifically 7.63 log 10 CFU mL −1 (lg) elimination for Escherichia coli (only 3.12 lg with CDs and 4.18 lg with ZIF-8) and 7.27 lg elimination for Staphylococcus aureus (only 4.17 lg with CDs and 2.94 lg with ZIF-8). Optoelectronic property analysis and density functional theory calculations show that the enhanced photodynamic antimicrobial properties of CDs@ZIF-8 can be attributed to their narrow bandgap and higher binding affinity for O 2 , which facilitates the photo-generated e − –h + pairs separation and promotes the generation of 1 O 2 and •O 2 − . Furthermore, the CDs@ZIF-8/polycaprolactone/ethyl cellulose nanofibrous films are prepared by microfluidic-blow-spinning, which have prominent antimicrobial properties and extend the shelf life of strawberries from 6 to 12 d. Overall, this study provides a novel idea for designing synergistically enhanced photodynamic antimicrobial materials and photodynamic preservation of perishable fruits.

Photodynamically active food packaging coatings utilizing green materials and strategies have recently garnered significant attention to address challenges in fresh fruit preservation. This study introduces a novel light-driven edible coating composed of ferulic acid (FA) cross-linked with gelatin (Gel/FA) to enhance fruit preservation. The coating was fabricated via hydrogen bonding between FA and gelatin, verified by SEM and FT-IR. Notably, the Gel/FA coating exhibited exceptional photodynamic antibacterial activity, achieving over 98.5 % inactivation of foodborne pathogens under visible light irradiation. Additionally, the Gel/FA coating demonstrated well biocompatibility and robust antioxidant properties. Preservation trials on fresh-cut apples and strawberries revealed that the Gel/FA coating significantly delayed browning, inhibited microbial spoilage, and maintained texture, total soluble solids, and pH stability during storage. The synergistic effect of Gel/FA coating and light treatment highlights its potential as a sustainable and effective strategy to extend the shelf life and preserve the quality of fresh fruits.
