Design of ZIF-based CNTs wrapped porous carbon with hierarchical pores as electrode materials for supercapacitors

Lvye Yang,Yi Feng,Dongbo Yu,Jianhao Qiu,Xiong-Fei Zhang,Dehua Dong,Jianfeng Yao

ZIF-8 wrapped two-dimensional ZIF-L(Co) was prepared. By adjusting the Zn 2+ concentration in precursor, ZIF-8 layer with different thickness was coated onto sheet-like ZIF-L. After carbonization, hierarchical porous carbon with CNTs wrapping was formed. Proper ZIF-8 coating would result in the porous carbon with relative high BET surface area, N content, electrical conductivity and proper pore size distribution ; thus showing higher supercapacitive performance than that of carbonized ZIF-8 or carbonized ZIF-L. The highest specific capacitance is 274 F/g for carbonized composite materials compared to that of 220 F/g for carbonized ZIF-8 and 57 F/g for carbonized ZIF-L. Moreover, such composite sample (CZ-6) showed high stability and the energy density reached 6.99 W h/kg at a power density of 0.262 kW/k, which is better than most of other ZIF-based porous carbon reported before.

Efficient hydrogen evolution and rapid degradation of organic pollutants by robust catalysts of MoS2/TNT@CNTs

Qingyuan Qin,Qingdan Shi,Wenfeng Ding,Junmin Wan,Zhiwen Hu

Exploiting an inexpensive and high-effective composite catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and elimination of organic contaminant from wastewater has drawn great attentions recently. Herein, a facile two-step hydrothermal process was successfully adopted to realize the growth of MoS 2 nanosheet on the surface of unique TNT@CNTs (TC). Remarkable, the optimized MoS 2 /TNT@CNTs (MTC) catalyst exhibited high-efficient photocatalytic activity for high concentrations (30 mg/L) of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) with the photodegradation rate of 98.7% and 99.0% in 50 min, which are 2 and 6 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 nanotube (TNT), respectively. Meanwhile, the novel composites also showed better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with the overpotential of 110 mV. The significant enhance in photocatalytic performance and electrocatalytic activity are attribute to formation of chemical bonds and large specific surface area, which effectively separate and transfer interfacial charges. The radical scavenging techniques confirmed that the holes (h + ) and •O 2 − radicals played a main role in the photocatalytic process. This study suggests that the novel nanocomposite has extensive application to solve environment and energy issues due to the low-cost raw materials, simple and inexpensive synthesizing process and environmental-friendly methods.

Rational design of CNTs with encapsulated Co nanospheres as superior acid- and base-resistant microwave absorbers

Chen Liang,Ying Yu,Cailing Chen,Yue Lou,Lei Wang,Kang Liu,Xiao-Bo Chen,Chunguang Li,Zhan Shi

Carbon nanotubes with encapsulated Co nanospheres (Co@CNTs) were prepared via a simple approach that exhibits promising control over the morphology and size distribution. The individual CNTs interweave with each other and form a three-dimensional network structure. Test results indicate that the presence of polarized interfaces between the Co spheres and CNTs, as well as an excellent impedance match, leads to a superior performance in electromagnetic wave absorption. A maximum reflection loss of −70.8 dB at 6.24 GHz is obtained for a paraffin containing a 30 wt% Co@CNT inclusion. In addition, the effective absorption bandwidth (with a reflection loss below −10 dB) is 12.95–17.7 GHz at a thickness of 1.9 mm, covering most Ku bands. In particular, such Co@CNT structures demonstrate superior and sustainable electromagnetic wave-absorption properties even in contact with concentrated acid or base, owing to their specific encapsulated structure. These findings could provide new guidelines for the preparation and employment of promising microwave absorption materials that can work under harsh environments through a simple and feasible strategy.

Growing layered double hydroxides on CNTs and their catalytic performance for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas

Cao Ang,Liu Guilong,Wang Lianfang,Liu Jingge,Yue Yizhi,Zhang Lihong,Liu Yuan

Abstract Nanostructured CuCo-LDH/CNT composites were successfully synthesized according to the co-precipitation method and firstly used for higher alcohol synthesis. The structural characterization and morphological observation demonstrated that CuCo-LDHs were in situ grown on the CNTs surface, and the CNTs support favored the dispersion of LDHs; meanwhile, a mechanism for growing the LDHs on CNTs was proposed, and the reported methods could be expanded to prepare other LDHs/CNT composites. After reduction, due to the strong interaction between CuCo-LDHs and CNTs, Cu–Co alloy, nanoparticles with small and uniform size were obtained and highly dispersed on the Al 2 O 3 matrix and CNTs surface. In particular, the high thermal conductivity of CNTs suppressed the formation of hot spots, thus effectively inhibited the generation of hydrocarbons and CO 2 . The resultant CuCo-LDHs/CNTs composite exhibited better catalytic performance and higher selectivity to C 2+ alcohols than the pristine LDHs did, which turned out to be one of the best catalysts for HAS. Efficient removal of organic pollutants from aqueous media using newly synthesized polypyrrole/CNTs-CoFe2O4 magnetic nanocomposites

Xiaoli Li,Haijun Lu,Yun Zhang,Fu He

In this study, the polypyrrole/CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanohybrid (CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy) was prepared and then used as adsorbent and catalyst to remove anionic and cationic dyes. The hybrid material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, BET surface area, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Adsorption behaviors of the as-prepared composites for anionic dyes such as Methyl Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO) and Acid Fuchsin (AF) were conducted where the effects of solution pH, initial dye concentration, contact time and ionic strength were systematically studied. The equilibrium adsorption data of MB, MO and AF were well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, yielding the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 137.00, 116.06 and 132.15   mg/g, respectively. Adsorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo-second order model. The introduction of CoFe 2 O 4 into CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy hybrid could not only provide an effective magnetic separation performance, but also act as catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of cationic dye, Methylene Blue (MEB), from aqueous solution. The results showed that CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy presented higher catalytic activity, better stability and reusability for the decolorization of MEB, resulting in an almost complete removal of 50   mg/L MEB after 30   min with 1.0   g/L catalyst and 4   mmol/L PMS . The characteristics of high adsorption capacity, effective separation, excellent catalytic activity and good reusability would make CNTs-CoFe 2 O 4 @PPy a promising candidate for wastewater treatment.

A pM leveled photoelectrochemical sensor for microcystin-LR based on surface molecularly imprinted TiO2@CNTs nanostructure

Meichuan Liu,Xue Ding,Qiwei Yang,Yu Wang,Guohua Zhao,Nianjun Yang

A simple and highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor towards Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a kind of typical cyanobacterial toxin in water samples, was developed on a surface molecular imprinted TiO 2 coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MI-TiO 2 @CNTs) hybrid nanostructure. It was synthesized using a feasible two-step sol-gel method combining with in situ surface molecular imprinting technique (MIT). With a controllable core-shell tube casing structure, the resultant MI-TiO 2 @CNTs are enhanced greatly in visible-light driven response capacity. In comparison with the traditional TiO 2 (P25) and non-imprinted (NI-)TiO 2 @CNTs, the MI-TiO 2 @CNTs based PEC sensor showed a much higher photoelectric oxidation capacity towards MC-LR. Using this sensor, the determination of MC-LR was doable in a wide linear range from 1.0   pM to 3.0   nM with a high photocurrent response sensitivity. An outstanding selectivity towards MC-LR was further achieved with this sensor, proven by simultaneously monitoring 100-fold potential co-existing interferences. The superiority of the obtained MC-LR sensor in sensitivity and selectivity is mainly attributed to the high specific surface area and excellent photoelectric activity of TiO 2 @CNTs heterojunction structure, as well as the abundant active recognition sites on its functionalized molecular imprinting surface. A promising PEC analysis platform with high sensitivity and selectivity for MC-LR has thus been provided.

Facile Preparation of Three-Dimensional Cubic MnSe2/CNTs and Their Application in Aqueous Copper Ion Batteries

Junjun Wang,Linlin Tai,Wei Zhou,Han Chen,Jingxiong Liu,Shaohua Jiang

Transition metal sulfide compounds with high theoretical specific capacity and excellent electronic conductivity that can be used as cathode materials for secondary batteries attract great research interest in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Among these materials, MnSe2garners significant interest from researchers due to its unique three-dimensional cubic structure and inherent stability. However, according to the relevant literature, the performance and cycle life of MnSe2are not yet satisfactory. To address this issue, we synthesize MnSe2/CNTs composites via a straightforward hydrothermal method. MnSO4·H2O, Se, and N2H4·H2O are used as reactants, and CNTs are incorporated during the stirring process. The experimental outcomes indicate that the fabricated electrode demonstrates an initial discharge specific capacity that reaches 621 mAh g−1at a current density of 0.1 A g−1. Moreover, it exhibits excellent rate capability, delivering a discharge specific capacity of 476 mAh g−1at 10 A g−1. The electrode is able to maintain a high discharge specific capacity of 545 mAh g−1after cycling for 1000 times at a current density of 2 A g−1. The exceptional electrochemical performance of the MnSe2/CNTs composites can be ascribed to their three-dimensional cubic architecture and the 3D CNT network. This research aids in the progression of aqueous Cu-ion cathode materials with significant potential, offering a viable route for their advancement.

Permittivity controllable CNTs/PI composite aerogels with oriented microchannels for advanced microwave absorption and thermal isolation

Hao Wu,Xiaohu Ren,Wanxin Hu,Yun Tang,Hongfeng Yin,Huiqing Fan,Hudie Yuan,Chao Wang,Yalou Xin

Polymer-based aerogels have proven to be a promising choice to obtain high-performance and lightweight materials for electromagnetic microwave (EMW) absorption. Here, directional freeze-drying was used to produce multifunctional ultralight CNTs/PI composite aerogels with oriented microchannel structures. The unique oriented pore structure causes the multiple reflections and scattering of incident EMW inside the material, which favors the attenuation of the EM energy. By changing the CNTs content in the composite aerogels, the dipole polarization and the interface polarization can be effectively regulated. With a CNTs content of 30 % and a thickness of 2.5 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −41 dB was achieved at 15.36 GHz. A large effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.88 GHz was achieved at a thickness of 3 mm. In addition, the CNTs/PI composite aerogels displayed excellent toughness, thermal isolation and the thermal stability. The high-temperature resistant, lightweight composite aerogels proposed in this study could provide a feasible and effective approach for the development of advanced multifunctional microwave-absorbing materials.

A 3D interwoven Pt@CNTs network embedded in ZnIn2S4 microspheres for Schottky-driven photothermal hydrogen evolution

Junjie Hao,Ning Li,Jingkai Lin,Chaorui Xue,Qing Chang,Xiangqian Fan,Huinian Zhang,Caihong Hao,Huayang Zhang,Shengliang Hu

Photocatalytic hydrogen production holds promise for solar energy conversion but is limited by inefficient charge separation and sluggish interfacial kinetics. Here, we construct a Pt@carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) heterostructure, where Pt-decorated CNTs intertwine and embed within ZIS microspheres. The CNTs not only guide ZIS nucleation but also serve as conductive channels and spatial confinement scaffolds, forming a well-integrated architecture for efficient carrier transport. This heterostructure operates via a thermo-electronic channel engineering strategy, integrating dual photothermal activation (arising from CNTs lattice vibrations and Pt plasmonic effects) with Schottky junction modulation. The resulting localized heating, in concert with the built-in electric field, synergistically enhances charge separation, facilitates hot electron generation, and accelerates interfacial reaction kinetics. The hierarchical architecture enables a three-dimensional hot-carrier migration pathway, efficiently directing electrons from the interior of ZIS to Pt active sites through CNTs. Consequently, the heterostructure achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 51.4 mmol g −1  h −1 , 103 times higher than pristine ZIS. This work thus presents a multifunctional design paradigm that integrates efficient light harvesting, interfacial charge regulation, and thermal enhancement, providing a viable route toward highly efficient solar-driven hydrogen production.

Trinity System: Leaf-like PVDF/Al@CNTs Composites with Superhydrophobic, Safety, and High Energy-releasing Performance

Pei Yang,Shuang Wang,Huihui Liu,Linghui Meng,Yongping Bai,Jinmei He

The development of multifunctional Metastable intermixed composites (MICs) is a highly coveted objective in this field. Inspired by trees, its excellent ability to grasp soil plays an important role in energy conversion. Here, leaf-like PVDF/Al@CNTs (PDC) colloids with an energy conduction network of CNTs were prepared by strong shearing and precipitation in poor solvent. This trinity system achieved synchronous super-hydrophobicity, high safety, and excellent combustion performance. The synergistic effect of CNTs, micro-clusters of PDC and β-PVDF greatly increased the water contact angle (WAC) of the samples, achieving a WAC of 140° when CNTs were added at 3   wt%. The high conductivity and unique CNTs network enable PDC's security and electromagnetic shielding of PDC. Importantly, the sensitivity of the laser ignition and the ignition delay time were tuned. The reaction process of PDC was characterized by DSC-TG-MS, and the main reaction temperature decreases with the addition of CNTs. Moreover, PDC-1 exhibits the highest ignition pressure, energy release, and combustion rate. The combustion process is characterized by simplified simulations, which verify the important role of the unique network of CNTs in PDC for energy conduction during combustion. This work presents a distinctive approach for multifunctional MICs, demonstrating encouraging potential for various applications in energetic materials.

Comparative study of chemically grafted vs. physically coated CNTs on fracture toughness of BMI/CF laminates

Anran Fu,Yunfu Ou,Juan Li,Yunxiao Zhang,Dongliang Shen,Zhen Wang,Zhengyan Chen,Dongsheng Mao

This study investigates the interlaminar toughening of bismaleimide/carbon fiber (BMI/CF) composite laminates using modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) deposited via spray coating technology. Pristine CNTs were functionalized through chemical modification (grafting 5-aminoisophthalic acid small molecules to yield CNT-COOH) and physical modification (coating with a layer of polydopamine to produce CNT@PDA) to enhance dispersion within the composite matrix. While both modification methods improved the dispersion of CNTs, their thermal stabilities during composite molding led to contrasting toughening outcomes. Chemically grafted CNT-COOH demonstrated superior performance, achieving a 20 % increase in mode I fracture toughness (G IC ) and a 32.37 % increase in mode II fracture toughness (G IIC ). In contrast, physically coated CNT@PDA exhibited reduced toughening efficacy compared to the baseline in both mode I and mode II fracture toughness. This can be attributed to the poorer thermal stability of the physically coated CNT@PDA than that of chemically grafted CNT-COOH. On one hand, the coating material PDA itself has poor thermal stability which is highly prone to decomposition during high-temperature molding. On the other hand, it can be influenced by the methods of CNT modification. The bonding mechanisms of chemical grafting (covalent bonds) and physical coating (van der Waals forces and other physical interactions) differ, leading to varying stability under high temperatures. The decomposition of the coating material and the high-temperature failure of van der Waals forces diminished surface functional groups and introduced defects around the CNTs, significantly compromising interlaminar fracture toughness. The findings underscore the critical role of thermal stability in determining the effectiveness of nanomodification strategies for advanced composite materials.

Selective detection of Escherichia coli based on BSA/CNTs/ UIO-66-NH2 molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors

Jiaqi Niu,Jinhui Liu,Ping Guo,Min Du,Wanqing Wu,Ziyang Zhang,Ye Ning,Dedi Zhou,Haidong Cao

As a common contaminating bacterium, Escherichia coli (E. coli) has caused severe harm in various fields such as food, healthcare, and the environment. Traditional detection methods for Escherichia coli, owing to factors like high cost and low efficiency, are unable to meet the detection requirements at the present stage. Therefore, the development of a simple, rapid, and highly efficient detection method for Escherichia coli represents an urgent issue that needs to be addressed promptly. This study focused on the development of a highly selective molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for E. coli. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared by electropolymerization on the surface of glassy carbon electrode using o-phenylenediamine as the functional monomer, aminated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the composites, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was added into the polymer film to attenuate the non-imprinting effect. The linear range of the sensor was 10-10 7 CFU/mL and the detection limit was 5.2 CFU/mL. Good recovery rates were shown in real samples of drinking water, milk and orange juice. In addition, the good binding ability of the E. coli template molecule to the functional monomer o-phenylenediamine was verified by molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. This study was able to detect E. coli in 20 min, which provides a more open idea for the application of rapid detection of E. coli on-site, as well as the construction of molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors and the analysis of the binding mechanism between template molecules and functional monomers.
