Novel NiO nanoflakes in situ grown on graphene layers for the sensitive detection of low concentration H2S
At present, the effective detection of H 2 S is of indispensable significance for safeguarding human health and maintaining production safety. In this study, a simple ammonia volatile liquid phase deposition method was adopted to in-situ construct cross-linked porous NiO nanoflakes composites on the surface of graphene (Gr) layers under mild conditions from room temperature to calcination. Through regulating the deposition reaction time, the proportion of NiO to Gr components in the composite material can be flexibly controlled. Among them, the NiO nanoflakes/Gr-8 material prepared by deposition for 8 h shows the optimal H 2 S gas sensitivity performance. At the optimal operating temperature of 92℃, the detection limit of H 2 S of this sensor is as low as 10 ppb, and its performance is significantly better than that of most sensing materials. Its outstanding performance stems from multi-dimensional structural optimization: NiO serves as the gas-sensitive active center to dominate the sensing response. The introduction of Gr increases the specific surface area of the material and significantly enhances its electrical conductivity. Particularly crucial is that the p-p heterostructure formed at the NiO/Gr interface effectively promotes the ionization of adsorbed oxygen ions. This study provides a new idea for the development of high-performance H 2 S gas sensors through a collaborative optimization strategy of “active components-conductive substrates-heterostructure interfaces”.
Flower-like In-TiO2@Bi2MoO6 S-scheme heterojunction for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic desulfurization of H2S
S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a promising strategy to overcome the limitations of conventional systems by enabling efficient charge transfer while preserving strong redox capability. In this study, a novel flower-like In-TiO 2 @Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterojunction was developed via a simple hydrothermal synthesis for visible-light-driven photocatalytic desulfurization of H 2 S. The optimized In-TiO 2 -0.4@Bi 2 MoO 6 composition (molar ratio of In-TiO 2 to Bi 2 MoO 6 = 0.4) achieved complete H 2 S removal within 120 min under visible-light irradiation, exhibiting outstanding activity, operational stability, and adaptability to various desulfurization conditions. Mechanistic investigations using VB-XPS, UPS, ESR, DRIFTS and DFT calculations confirmed that the S-scheme configuration accelerated photoinduced charge separation, reduced electron migration distances, and maintained a high redox potential, thereby promoting efficient generation of reactive oxygen species for sulfur conversion. The synergistic interaction between In-TiO 2 and Bi 2 MoO 6 provides a robust platform for efficient, selective, and durable desulfurization under mild conditions. These findings offer a mechanistic framework for designing next-generation S-scheme photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy-related applications.
Based ‘successive’ nucleophilic substitution mitochondrial-targeted H2S red light emissive fluorescent probe and its imaging in mice
The research of endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) biology function, pathological and pharmacological effects has been active in the field of chemists and biologists in recent years. Especially, consequent H 2 S detection mechanisms and biological applications based on fluorescence probe emerged in endlessly, competing ideas, each had its advantage. In facts, the reaction mechanism and luminescence properties play a decisive role in the biology application of H 2 S fluorescence probe. In this despite booming season, in the process of research we still skillfully conceived, in view of H 2 S with small structure being able to do successive nucleophilic substitution in the same molecules, high selective H 2 S subcellular detection was realized. Specifically, we take the cyanine (Cy7) with positive charge as a red fluorophore, through the introduction of disulfide bond and carbonate to build the specific reaction sites of H 2 S, thus avoiding the interference of other sulfur-containing substances in biological systems. After reaction with H 2 S, the Probe released red fluorophore, realizing mitochondria target H 2 S detection. Because the advantages of red fluorescence emission probe, the Probe successfully was applied imaging in mice.
Synthesis of core-shell flower-like WO3@ZIF-71 with enhanced response and selectivity to H2S gas
Core-shell heterostructures of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and metal organic framework (MOF) improve gas-sensing properties due to the MOF's molecular sieving effects. However, the selection of MOF is limited by the requirement of identical metal element in MOF to that in MOS, which is crucial for valid interface adhesion. In this paper, WO 3 @ZIF-71 (zeolitic imidazolate framework) structure with different metal elemental components (W and Zn) was fabricated by a step-by-step (SBS) approach. As a result, ZIF-71 was uniformly coated on the surface of WO 3 . In order to explore the influence of ZIF-71 (pore size: 4.8 Å), the gas sensitivity of WO 3 and WO 3 @ZIF-71 were tested. Different kinetic diameters gases: H 2 S (3.62 Å), CH 3 COCH 3 (4.6 Å), CH 3 CH 2 OH (4.53 Å), NO 2 (5.8 Å) were selected as testing gas. Gases with small molecules (H 2 S, CH 3 COCH 3 and CH 3 CH 2 OH) can pass through the membrane of ZIF-71 and contact with WO 3 , while larger ones (NO 2 ) were blocked outside the membrane. Excitingly, the response of WO 3 @ZIF-71 toward H 2 S gas was significantly improved, which soars from 2.24 of 20 ppm for pure WO 3 to 19.12 for H 2 S at 250 °C, increased about 9 times. These results indicate that the MOS@MOF core-shell structure can be synthesized by the SBS method without the restriction of the same metal elements in MOS and MOF, which is also an effective approach to regulate the selectivity and sensitivity of the MOS@MOF gas sensor.
Macrophage-targeted, ROS-removing and H2S-releasing nanomicelle encapsulated in hydrogel microspheres for the treatment of osteoarthritis
The progression and severity of osteoarthritis (OA) are significantly associated with intra-articular synovitis, with the imbalance of M1/M2 macrophages serving as a critical driving factor in the pathogenesis of synovitis. In this study, we developed macrophage-targeted nanomicelles capable of scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and releasing hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S). These nanomicelles were encapsulated within injectable methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) porous hydrogel microspheres, thereby creating a new H 2 S gas therapy platform for the treatment of osteoarthritis. In vitro experiments demonstrated that GelMA@FPLBD actively targeted macrophages, efficiently removed ROS, and gradually released H 2 S. This process inhibited the expression of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK) and phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3) in activated macrophages, thereby suppressing M1 polarization and promoting M2 polarization, resulting in significant anti-inflammatory effects. In vivo experiments utilizing a destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM)-induced osteoarthritis (OA) rat model further revealed the anti-inflammatory and cartilage-protective properties of GelMA@FPLBD, effectively mitigating the progression of OA. Therefore, this study indicates that GelMA@FPLBD, functioning as a H 2 S gas therapy platform, holds significant promise for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).
On-Site Periodontitis Diagnosis via Room-Temperature Oral Exhalation H2S Sensor Based on Yb-Doped Bi2S3 Nanoribbon
A novel Yb-doped Bi 2 S 3 H 2 S sensor was fabricated for periodontitis exhalation diagnosis, which enables room temperature detection with high response (3.31/100 ppb) and superior selectivity. Mechanism analysis combined with density functional theory calculations confirms that Yb doping-induced lattice distortion in Bi 2 S 3 enhances O 2- formation and H 2 S adsorption. The sensor quantifies H 2 S produced by Porphyromonas gingivalis to confirm the association among pathogens, H 2 S and periodontitis, and is integrated into a portable analyzer for rapid, real‑time diagnosis and severity assessment of periodontitis clinically.
Hierarchical superhydrophobic coating with self-warning and self-healing function for enhanced corrosion resistance in H2S environments
Developing a multifunctional coating that combines self-warning, self-healing, and robust corrosion resistance remains a formidable challenge in metal protection. In this work, a hierarchical superhydrophobic composite coating is engineered to incorporate self-warning, self-healing, and H 2 S-digestion capabilities, which significantly enhanced its overall anti-corrosion performance in both simulated seawater and H 2 S corrosive environments. In H 2 S environments, the hierarchical superhydrophobic composite coating neutralizes the corrosive medium (H 2 S) through a two-pronged strategy. The Ce(IV)-MOF in the hydrophobic top layer actively oxidizes S 2- . Concurrently, H + degrade the ZrP@Tannic acid-(ε-poly- L -lysine) (ZrP@TA-PLL) in the underlying anti-corrosion layer, prompting the release of corrosion inhibitors/corrosion probes to establish a dual-function film capable of both detecting corrosion and repairing the substrate. After 90 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and H 2 S environments respectively, the corrosion resistance of the hierarchical superhydrophobic composite coating improved by approximately 1.2 times and 6.86 times compared to the 5 wt% ZrP@TA-PLL/EP coating. This novel design not only holds significant potential for advancing the field of smart self-warning and self-healing anti-corrosion coating but also provides a high-performance solution specifically for surface protection against H 2 S corrosion.
In-situ sulfidation strategy for constructing SnO2/SnS2 heterojunctions: Achieving highly robust flexible room temperature H2S sensors
The development of portable, low-power H 2 S sensors is critical for environmental safety but remains challenged to balance high sensitivity with mechanical flexibility at room temperature. Herein, we present a hierarchical SnO 2 /SnS 2 nanoflower composite synthesized via a facile in-situ sulfidation strategy, which ensures intimate lattice coherence for robust flexible sensing. The optimal sensor on a PET substrate exhibits a high response of 19.01 to 10 ppm H 2 S at 25 °C, a low theoretical detection limit of 95.38 ppb, and excellent mechanical stability under 90° bending. Mechanistically, Mott-Schottky analysis confirms that SnO 2 /SnS 2 heterojunctions induce a 50-fold increase in carrier concentration. This electronic modulation extends the Debye length (24.4 nm) beyond the average crystallite size (16.9 nm), creating a volume depletion state in ambient air that enables massive resistance modulation upon H 2 S exposure. This work demonstrates a robust flexible sensor and establishes a quantitative criterion for heterojunction design through Debye length engineering.
H2S/NO gasotransmitter-releasing nanofibers functionalized on implants accelerate osseointegration by coordinating osteogenic, angiogenic, and immunoregulatory responses
Dental implants face challenges such as poor osseointegration, delayed angiogenesis, and chronic inflammation. Endogenous gaseous signaling molecules hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and nitric oxide (NO) have emerged as key gasotransmitters that regulate angiogenesis, osteogenic differentiation and immune responses, making them attractive candidates for microenvironment-targeted therapies. Here, we engineer a dual gasotransmitter-releasing coating by co-electrospinning hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and nitric oxide (NO) donors, JK-2 and S-Nitroso- N -acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP), into gelatin/polycaprolactone (Gel/PCL) nanofibers (NFs). These NFs were applied to laser-microgrooved titanium (Ti) surfaces, further modified with polyepigallocatechin gallate (pEGCG) to ensure stable attachment. The resulting coating exhibited sustained, pH-responsive release of H 2 S and NO, which acted synergistically to enhance cellular responses. In vitro , the dual gasotransmitter-releasing NFs coating enhanced endothelial cell migration, tube formation, and upregulated angiogenic markers (VEGF, TGF-β1, eNOS). Additionally, MC3T3 preosteoblasts showed increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineralization, and upregulation of osteogenic genes (Runx2, COL1, OPN, OPG). RNA-sequencing identified enriched pathways related to histone methylation and oxidative phosphorylation, crucial for osteogenesis and cellular metabolism. Macrophages cultured with these NFs demonstrated suppressed M1 pro-inflammatory markers and enhanced M2 polarization, indicating a shift toward a more regenerative immune response. In vivo , the NFs coating significantly improved neovascularization, bone volume, collagen deposition, and peri-implant tissue thickness. This synergistic release of H 2 S and NO provides a promising strategy to enhance osseointegration and bone regeneration by modulating angiogenesis and immune responses.
One-step synthesis of MgO-MnO loaded N-doped carbon aerogel for ultrahigh low-temperature H2S desulfurization
Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a hazardous and malodorous pollutant with severe environmental and health impacts. A promising approach for H 2 S removal involves coupling adsorption with low-temperature catalytic oxidation using alkaline metal oxide-loaded carbon-based materials. However, the effectiveness of these materials is often limited by pore blockage caused by metal oxides and desulfurization byproducts. N-doped carbon aerogels offer a solution to this issue due to their large specific surface area and well-developed pore structure. In this study, a novel MgO-MnO-loaded N-doped carbon aerogel (MgO-MnO/NC) was synthesized by one-step high-temperature pyrolysis of cellulose-based aerogel precursor for highly efficient low-temperature H 2 S desulfurization. The effects of pyrolysis temperature and metal oxide loading on H 2 S removal efficiency was systematically investigated. The optimized MgO-MnO/NC-600–0.3 (where 600 represents the pyrolysis temperature and 0.3 denotes the mass ratio of metal salts to cellulose) exhibited outstanding H 2 S removal performance, achieving an ultrahigh desulfurization capacity of 1696 mg/g. The desulfurization conditions, such as O 2 content and relative humidity, were found to play a crucial role in the H 2 S removal process. In situ DRIFTS and XPS analyses revealed a synergistic mechanism of reactive adsorption and catalytic oxidation on the MgO-MnO/NC surface. The desulfurization products were identified as sulfur, sulfate and metal sulfide (MgS and MnS). This study not only proposes a feasible strategy for fabricating biomass-derived aerogel carbon, but also offers valuable insights into the catalytic oxidation of H 2 S for enhancing the desulfurization performance of N-doped carbons.
Simultaneous and exceptionally efficient removal of H2S and CO2 from CH4 by novel protic thiolate ionic liquids
Desulfurization and decarbonization are indispensable processes in natural gas upgrading. Although functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) have demonstrated potential in gas purification, their practical application is hindered by insufficient absorption capacities for H 2 S and CO 2 under low partial pressure condition. To address this limitation, a series of novel protic thiolate ILs (TILs) through acid-base neutralization reactions between organic superbases and thiols have been developed in this work. The capture performance of H 2 S, CO 2 , and CH 4 by these TILs was systematically investigated at temperatures ranging from 303.2 to 343.2 K. Notably, the representative TIL formed by 1,5-diazabicyclo [4.3.0] non-5-ene and 3-mercapto-1-propanol ([DBNH][MP]) demonstrated remarkable absorption capacities, achieving 1.42 mol/mol (6.58 mol/kg) for H 2 S and 0.95 mol/mol (4.37 mol/kg) for CO 2 at 303.2 K and 1.0 bar. Even under reduced pressure condition (0.05 bar), [DBNH][MP] maintained exceptional absorption performance, with capacities of 1.00 mol/mol for H 2 S and 0.81 mol/mol for CO 2 . Moreover, the H 2 S/CH 4 and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivities in [DBNH][MP] also reached 838 and 680 (0.05 bar H 2 S/CO 2 vs. 1.0 bar CH 4 ), respectively, surpassing those of all previously reported absorbents. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we conducted comprehensive characterization studies using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled with independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH) analysis revealed that the exceptional gases capture performance originates from strong chemical interactions between thiolate anions (RS⁻) and the target gas molecules. These findings demonstrate that the developed TILs are promising candidates for the simultaneous removal of H 2 S and CO 2 during natural gas upgrading processes.
