Shape-dependent close-edge 2D-MoS2 nanobelts

Xiaofeng Wang,Haiguang Yang,Huimin Feng,Lei Wang,Shengyao Chen,Zhican Zhou,Shu Wang,Qian Liu

Atomic-thin MoS2 materials have attracted increasing attention due to their potentials in numerous fields. However, in 2D-MoS2 sheets, the edge region usually has unique features differing from the interior region, which has potential application in enhancing catalysts and shape-dependent 2D-nanodevices. However, fabricating it cost-effectively is still very difficult. Here, we present one universal method to obtain various shape-dependent closed-edge 2D-MoS2 nanobelts only using one simple step, and width of the MoS2 nanobelts (minimum of 270 nm) were adjustable. Our strategy opens a new fabrication route for closed-edge 2D-MoS2 nanobelts, and in principle, this method is also suitable for other CVD-grown 2D materials.

Nanozymatic Antioxidant System Based on MoS2 Nanosheets

Tongming Chen,Hang Zou,Xiaoju Wu,Chunchen Liu,Bo Situ,Lei Zheng,Guowei Yang

The enzymatic antioxidant system (EAS) protects aerobic cells from oxidative stress. However, it is brittle and susceptible of inactivation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) immoderate production. Here, we demonstrated that MoS2 nanosheets (few-layer MoS2), as a multifunctional nanozyme, possess intrinsic activity of mimicking enzymes of superoxide dismutases (SODs), catalases (CATs), and peroxidases (PODs) under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 25 °C). Further, MoS2 nanosheets showed POD-like activity by transferring electrons instead of generating ROS. Similar to EAS, a defense termed nanozymatic antioxidant system (NAS) was developed by MoS2 nanosheets, for regulation of oxidative stress. Surprisingly, this NAS can effectively scavenge other free radicals including hydroxyl radicals (•OH), nitrogen-centered free radicals (•DPPH), and nitric oxide (•NO). To evaluate these unique properties of MoS2-based NAS in vivo, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and A549 cell models were established, respectively. These results showed MoS2 nanosheets superiorly protect bacteria and cells against oxidative injury caused by H2O2. This work makes MoS2 nanosheets promising antioxidants in the pathological processes and expands their application in biocatalysis and nano-biomedicine.

Shengping Wang,Longfei Tan,Ping Liang,Tianlong Liu,Jingzhuo Wang,Changhui Fu,Jie Yu,Jianping Dou,Hong Li,Xianwei Meng

Microwave (MW) hyperthermia has received great attention as an emerging green tumor thermotherapy. In this work, layered MoS2 nanoflowers were prepared through a simple bottom-up hydrothermal process. By coating MoS2 nanoflowers with bovine serum albumin (BSA-MoS2), BSA-MoS2 exhibits low biotoxicity and excellent microwave susceptive properties in vitro. Meanwhile, the heating effect improvement by the layered structure was confirmed via a computer-simulated experiment. Finally, layered BSA-MoS2 nanoflowers are designed as MW hyperthermia susceptible agents for in vivo cancer therapy with 100% tumor elimination via MW irradiation at 1.8 W, 450 MHz.

Facile construction of MoS2/graphene aerogel composite by depositing MoS2 film with a magnetron sputtering method for high-performance supercapacitors

Yan Zhao,Guangjian Xing,Hexuan Liu,Wenting Zhang,Qingjun Liu,Chang Zhao,Yan Li,Yanyan Wang

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) film has been successfully deposited within a three-dimensional (3D) graphene aerogel (GA) by a magnetron sputtering method to facilely construct MoS 2 /GA composite as a high-performance electrode material of supercapacitor . Through cyclic voltammetry , constant current charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests of three-electrode supercapacitor, the electrochemical performance of the MoS 2 /GA composite was evaluated, demonstrating specific capacitances of 187.3 and 175.0 F g −1 at 0.5 and 1 A g −1 , respectively. When cycles 1000 times under the condition of 2 A g −1 , the capacitance retention remains 93.5%. The excellent electrochemical properties of MoS 2 /GA were attributed to the effective structural integration of MoS 2 film and graphene sheets achieved with the magnetron sputtering process, which can further develop other GA-based composites as a feasible technique. The as-prepared MoS 2 /GA with outstanding performance in this work has a promising prospect in supercapacitor application.

Tuning the Band Structure of MoS2 via Co9S8@MoS2 Core–Shell Structure to Boost Catalytic Activity for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Boyu Li,Qingmei Su,Lintao Yu,Jun Zhang,Gaohui Du,Dong Wang,Di Han,Miao Zhang,Shukai Ding,Bingshe Xu

The introduction of a dual-functional interlayer into lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) provides many opportunities for restraining the “shuttle effect” and enhancing sluggish sulfur conversion kinetics. Tuning the band structure of the metal sulfide provides an opportunity to enhance its catalytic activity, which plays an important role in suppressing the “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in LSBs. Here were present a Co9S8@MoS2 core–shell heterostructure anchored to a carbon nanofiber (Co9S8@MoS2/CNF), developed as an interlayer for suppressing the shuttle effect of LiPSs. The fabricated composite heterostructure is determined to be an effective alternative material that combines the synergistic relationship between chemisorption and electrochemical catalysis. We find that the band structure of the MoS2 shell can be effectively tuned by the Co9S8 core and that the Co9S8@MoS2/CNF can capture the LiPSs, providing excellent catalytic ability to convert LiPSs into Li2S2, with subsequent transformation from Li2S2 to Li2S. Importantly, high capacities of 1002 and 986 mAh g–1 can be retained after 50 cycles with high-sulfur loadings of 6 and 10 mg cm–2. Our results highlight the design of an atomic-scale heterostructure as a multifunctional interlayer providing a synergistic relationship between adsorption and catalysis. The net result is an effective retardation of the shuttling of LiPSs and an enhancement of the electrochemical redox reactions of LiPSs. This work shows great promise toward the development of practical applications of LSBs.

The effect of MoS2 modulated doping with molybdenum-oxide on the photovoltaic performance for MoS2/n-Si heterojunction solar cells

Yu Zhang,Ping Su,Linqing Liu,Pengfei Qiu,Li Su,Guangsheng Fu,Wei Yu

Achieving large Fermi energy splitting under illumination is critical for improving the performance of photovoltaic devices. In this work, we conducted the energy band structure modulation of MoS 2 thin films via MoO x doping scheme to realize its photovoltaic operation on n-type c-Si by magnetron sputtering. It is found that, by capping a MoO x overlayer, the MoS 2 electrons density decreased and the Fermi level shifted ~0.4 eV towards valence band, consequently the MoS 2 conductive type changing. With this doped MoS 2 layer, the built-in electric field of fabricated MoS 2 /n-Si heterojunction devices greatly improved and exceeded 400 mV owing to the larger interface energy-level differences. Meanwhile, the defects recombination losses reduced benefiting from the holes-selective behavior of O-deficiencies in MoO x , so that the photo-generated carriers extraction process were promoted. As a result, the doped MoS 2 /n-Si devices showed excellent rectification behavior with rectifying ratio to 10 5 and ideality of 1.12. The TRPL spectrums corroborated the enhanced carrier transport mechanism at MoS 2 /n-Si interface by MoO x modulation doping effect. Correspondingly, the significant improvement of doped MoS 2 /n-Si solar cells performance (V oc of 289 mV, FF of 60.72% and J sc of 31.25 mA/cm 2 ) was achieved, exhibiting an optimized conversion efficiency of 5.47%. The UPS analysis revealed that the doping mechanism of MoO x /MoS 2 stacks lies in energy band overlap and electrons contact transfer between these two materials. This observation of MoO x modulation doping effect on large-area sputtering MoS 2 could help in building a better interface carrier transport in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications of 2D materials.

Introducing a Porous Container and a Defect-Rich Cocatalyst Coating Over CdS Nanoparticles for Promotion of Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Peng Shengnan,Jiang Yunhong,Wang Zeming,Luo Xudong,Lu Jinlin,Han Lu,Ding Yanhuai

Abstract CdS nano-photocatalysts hold a great promise for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution; however, their practical application is greatly hampered by poor activity and stability due to the recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers and photocorrosion phenomena. Herein, we report a novel 3-dimensional CdS@UiO-66 nanostructures obtained by a facile solvent-free approach; with a step-by-step procedure, the core/shell configuration provided a suitable unit in size to easily equip defect-rich MoS 2 nanosheets. The UiO-66 Zr-MOFs used as a porous container to promote the dispersion of CdS nanoparticles, resulting to the increasement of active sites for photocatalytic reaction. The further enhanced photocatalytic activity for MoS 2 hybrid CdS@UiO-66 originated from the manufactured defect on the exposed edges of MoS 2 nanosheets, which was produced by adjusting the S/Mo ratio. UiO-66 did not only provide extensive migration routes over photogenerated electrons, more importantly, it created ample time and sites for accelerating consumption of the isolated photogenerated holes with sacrificial agent, resulting in alleviating photocorrosion reaction. The photocatalytic efficiency and photostability were simultaneously promoted. This work highlights the potential application of core/shell configuration in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Graphic Abstract CdS@UiO-66 type composite photocatalyst was obtained in the condition of solvent-free assembling at room temperature. The defect-rich MoS 2 nanosheets were felicitously equipped on the core/shell configuration. The obtained defect MoS 2 hybrid CdS@UiO-66 composite material exhibits a high and stable hydrogen production rate due to their synergistic effect.

A feasible and environmentally friendly method to simultaneously synthesize MoS2 quantum dots and pore-rich monolayer MoS2 for hydrogen evolution reaction

Qiulan Zhou,Xiaohu Luo,Yali Li,Yanxia Nan,Haoyun Deng,Encai Ou,Weijian Xu

MoS 2 has been one of a widely researched hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst materials in recent years. However, the basal plane of MoS 2 is considered to be inactive to hinder its further development. Herein, a new mass-scalable and facile intercalation method for the fabrication of multiple products, including pore-rich monolayer MoS 2 (PR MoS 2 ) and MoS 2 quantum dots (MoS 2 QDs), has been developed via the gas phase etching of bulk MoS 2 in an acetone vapor atmosphere. The obtained monolayer MoS 2 QDs with a narrow lateral size distribution (average size: 2.5 nm) present excitation-independent photoluminescence emission. Furthermore, the PR MoS 2 shows a significantly enhanced HER electrocatalytic activity and good stability in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution with a small overpotential of 241 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . These results demonstrate that the as-prepared PR MoS 2 is very promising for the application in HER.

Expanding the range of trackable environmental pollutants for Nafion based fuel cell type gas sensor

Lingchu Huang,Weijia Li,Huaiyuan Sun,Jianyu Zhang,Bin Wang,Qi Lu,Tong Wang,Xishuang Liang,Fangmeng Liu,Peng Sun,Fengmin Liu,Geyu Lu

Expanding the application field of fuel cell type gas sensors is of great significance for achieving high sensitivity, real-time gas detection at room temperature. Here, we developed a fuel cell type NO 2 gas sensor based on MoS 2 nanosheet/Carbon fiber (CF) sensing electrode and Nafion proton conductor , enabling the fuel cell type sensor to detect NO 2 for the first time. The effect of MoS 2 loadings(10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg) on the sensors’ performance and the sensitizing mechanism are investigated, the sensor containing 40 mg MoS 2 exhibits the best performance, which can be attributed to the large number of active sites and efficient carrier transport properties of the corresponding electrode materials. At room temperature, the optimal sensor demonstrates a sensitivity of 45.6 nA/ppm to 1–50 ppm NO 2 and an ultra-low detection limit of 28.8 ppb, both the response and recovery time are less than 60 s. This work not only develops a highly sensitive, reversible and fast response NO 2 gas sensor, but also provides insights into sensing electrochemistry, material selection and catalyst/support materials, offering guidelines for future fuel cell type gas sensors to monitor a wider range of environmental pollutants.

Dual-mode core–shell structured early fire warning sensing fiber with selective CO and temperature detection

Zhicai Yu,Lele Huang,Mi Zhou,Jie Xu,Jianchao Ma,Yuhang Wan,Qing Jiang,Xueru Qu,Hualing He

Early fire warning represents an effective mean in the face of fire that can remind people in timely manner to adopt effective countermeasures before the occurrence of fire. Despite the encouraging progress of current early fire-warning sensors, a more sensitive monitoring of early fires in multiple aspects remains challenge. Herein, a dual-mode core-sheath structured SnO 2 /MoS 2 @MXene@ANFs (SMA) early fire warning sensor fiber was prepared by coaxial wet spinning technology. The core-layer of SMA fiber comprised the thermoelectric material Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene, whereas the shell-layer comprised the gas-sensitive SnO 2 /MoS 2 and silver nanowires (Ag NWs) along with aramid nanofibers (ANFs). The robust and flame-retardant ANFs served as protective shell, safeguarding the stability and flexibility of the temperature and gas sensing functions within the fiber. Based on the thermoelectric performance of MXene, there is a linear relationship between the output voltage and temperature difference of SMA fiber, which can achieve wide range of temperature sensing from 50 to 300 ℃ and accurately identify abnormal temperature increases in the environment. Simultaneously, The bridging effect between one-dimensional Ag NWs and SnO 2 /MoS 2 enhances the sensing capability of fiber for CO (R 0 /R = 1.43@100 ppm). In addition, an early fire warning system based on SMA fiber has been established, which can sensitively detect the flames (≤4 s). This system can also be used for monitoring CO gas in fire environments, guiding firefighters’ rescue actions, expanding the application scope of early fire warning sensors in the past, and opening up new directions for the development of intelligent early fire sensors in the future.

Construction of an MZO heterojunction system with improved photocatalytic activity for degradation of organic dyes

Yingnan Quan,Rui Su,Mingyue Hu,Jihui Lang,Hougang Fan,He Shen,Ming Gao,Baizhi Li,Yang Liu,Jinghai Yang

Constructing heterojunctions is an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic activity. Here, we designed and synthesized MoS2/ZnO (MZO) heterojunction nanocomposites for photocatalytic degradation of organic dye pollutants. This work explores two main parts: exploring the formation mechanism of MZO and studying the photocatalytic performance of MZO. The results show that the heterostructure exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than pure MoS2 based on the synergistic effect of dipole–dipole coupling and charge transfer. Within 40 minutes, more than 97% of organic dyes can be degraded by the MZO photocatalyst. The degradation rates were 7, 11 and 10 times those of pure MoS2, ZnO and P25 photocatalysts, respectively. Such photocatalysts also exhibit excellent reusability and stability. Therefore, this study provides an effective strategy for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes, which is very promising in the field of environmental treatment.
