The exploitation of visible-light-activated gas sensors based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has been extensively investigated and is expected to hold tremendous potential in emerging fields of indoor gas sensing applications activated by daylight lamp. Enlightened by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Au nanoparticles in visible light spectrum and the abundant active sites of SnS quantum dots, an indoor white light activated gas sensor based on Au@MoS 2 /SnS nanocomposites is rationally developed for the high sensitive detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). Under the white light irradiation, the as-proposed gas sensor demonstrates an enhanced response exceeding 25-folds toward 1 ppm of NO 2 compared with the pristine MoS 2 gas sensor. Moreover, the white light-activated Au@MoS 2 /SnS gas sensor manifests excellent repeatability, rapid response/recovery speed (7/8 s), ppb-level detection limit, favorable long-term stability, and remarkable selectivity toward NO 2 . These enhanced gas sensitive performances principally stem from the interfacial charge transfer effect within the Au@MoS 2 /SnS composite material and the multiplied gas-sensitive pathways facilitated by the LSPR effect originating from the Au nanoparticle cores. This work paves an efficacious avenue for the development of high-performance gas sensitive devices operable at room temperature, thereby facilitating innovative advancements of gas sensing technology in various Internet of Things (IoTs) applications.

Enhancing the stability and selectivity of flexible room-temperature gas sensors has been of extensive concern for their practical application. However, it is very challenging to combine the integration of excellent mechanical flexibility and outstanding gas sensing properties. This study presents the design of a parallel structure of ZnO//In2O3 bicomponent nanofibers using a homemade V-type dual-channel electrospinning technique. Compared with as-electrospinning pure ZnO nanofibers and pure In2O3 nanofibers, the ZnO//In2O3-2 composite nanofibers showed higher response and low detection line NO2 at room temperature. The ZnO//In2O3-2 nanofibers have a maximum high response of 109.84 to 60 ppm of NO2 at room temperature, which is about 8.44 times higher than that of the pure In2O3 nanofibers. Moreover, the theoretical detection limit for NO2 is determined to be 1.99 ppb. We have investigated the excellent flexibility of the gas sensor for potential application. These findings indicate that the flexible ZnO//In2O3-2 nanofiber sensors hold great prospect in the application of portable and room-temperature ppb NO2 detection equipment.

Gallium nitride (GaN)-based gas sensors are widely recognized for their excellent carrier mobility, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, making them suitable for extreme working conditions. However, pure-phase GaN suffers from poor sensitivity and slow response/recovery rates due to its surface chemical stability. In this work, we proposed an Ag-modified GaN thin film, fabricated via magnetron sputtering, for direct integration into a sensor device for room-temperature NO 2 detection. The Ag modification is achieved through a dual approach: thermal diffusion combined with sputtering, followed by wet etching. The optimized Ag-GaN sensor demonstrates a maximum response of ∼4.3 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at room temperature (25 ± 3 °C), with excellent linearity across two concentrations range (1–10 ppm and 400–1000 ppb). The device exhibits a theoretical detection limit of ∼1.35 ppb and a response/recovery time of 150/400 s. Furthermore, the sensor shows highly reversible reaction-recovery behavior, with 2.05 % relative standard deviation (RSD), indicating outstanding repeatability. These findings advance the application of GaN-based materials in gas sensing, particularly for sensitive and reliable NO 2 detection at room temperature.

With the significant increase in global awareness of environmental protection, green non-toxic gas sensors have become an important tool to promote sustainable development. In this work, a gas sensor based on Bi 2 S 3 green non-toxic semiconductor material was successfully prepared. By introducing polyoxometalate (POMs) electron acceptor into Bi 2 S 3 sensing material, its detection ability for NO 2 gas was significantly improved. At room temperature (25 °C), the Bi 2 S 3 /1 %PW 12 sensor has a response value of 41.88 to 100 ppm NO 2 , which is 4.36 times the response value of the Bi 2 S 3 sensor (9.61), highlighting its excellent detection performance. In addition, we thoroughly evaluated the selectivity , repeatability and other key gas sensing parameters of the sensor, further confirming its high-potential in practical applications. Through analysis of the mechanism underlying the performance enhancement, it is found that the appropriate addition of PW 12 as an electron acceptor can effectively inhibit the electron-hole recombination, thus significantly improving the performance of the sensor. This important discovery opens up a new way and method for the performance optimization of gas sensors, and is expected to inject new vitality into the future development of gas sensor technology.

This work presents a novel heterogeneous catalytic system for the preparation of para -nitrotoluene ( p -NT) with nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) as a nitrating agent in the presence of oxygen (O 2 ). By applying dealuminated Hβ zeolite treated with oxalic acid (Hβ-Ox) as a catalyst, p -NT can be obtained with high conversion (90.5%) and selectivity (72.6%). In addition, it can be recycled at least five times without a significant decrease in catalytic activity. This result demonstrates that the catalyst has high efficiency, good stability, and regenerability. Meanwhile, the characteristics of pristine Hβ and different dealuminated Hβ zeolites modified with organic and inorganic acids were systematic contrastive studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen (N 2 ) adsorption-desorption, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), pyridine adsorption infrared (Py-FT-IR), and solid state 27 Al nuclear magnetic resonance ( 27 Al MAS-NMR). Finally, the higher conversion and para -selectivity over Hβ-Ox also give a reasonable explanation in this paper.

Structural Fe(II/III) hydroxides on the shell of nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) are reactive sites for As(III) adsorption. Well-controlled structural Fe(II) hydroxides (SFH) is prepared to serve for As(III) removal in present study. With oxygen As(III) removal by SFH occurred efficiently but the removal efficiency was greatly reduced under anoxic conditions. The mineral transformation from SFH to lepidocrocite probably contributed to the robust removal efficiency of As(III). It is found that Cu(II), Cr(VI) and NO 2 − in aqueous solution could act as oxidants and promote the mineral transformation of SFH. A more efficient As(III) removal was therefore observed without oxygen. The removal efficiency decreased in the order O 2 /SFH ≈ Cu(II)/SFH > Cr(VI)/SFH ≈ NO 2 − /SFH at near neutral pH. The removal efficiency was less dependent on the initial pH for O 2 /SFH and Cu(II)/SFH systems than Cr(VI)/SFH and NO 2 − /SFH systems. Distribution of As on solid phases was able to describe the removal mechanism of As(III), and the results showed that the mineral transformation promoted the precipitation process and inhibited outer-sphere complexation, thus leading to enhanced As removal. With Cu(II), Cr(VI) and NO 2 − , the generation of oxidants from SFH transformation drove As(III) oxidation, and contributed to total As removal.

The hazards to the ecological environment and human health promote the development of NO 2 monitoring sensors. However, the high operating temperature of traditional metal oxide sensitive materials limits the application of gas sensor-based systems in low power monitoring. Here, we utilize oxygen vacancy enriched 2D MoO 3-x , enabling the high performance optoelectronic NO 2 gas sensing at room temperature. The introduction of oxygen vacancies in MoO 3-x results in the red-shift light absorption from purple light to cyan light and high surface activity with negative potential, thus promoting its application in optoelectronic room temperature gas sensing. Under 365 nm UV light irradiation, oxygen vacancy enriched 2D MoO 3-x based gas sensor shows a good room temperature reversible response towards different concentrations of NO 2 , in which a response factor of 6.46 is achieved towards 10 ppm NO 2 . Moreover, excellent repeatability in six continuous tests, selectivity towards five common gases, and long-term stability for four months were also demonstrated in this sensor. This work provides an effective approach for tuning the electronic structure and surface activity of metal oxide, and demonstrates the application feasibility of oxygen vacancy enriched metal oxide in high optoelectronic gas sensing.

The escalating emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) resulting from rapid industrialization pose a severe threat to both ecological balance and public health, rendering the development of high-performance NO 2 sensors imperative for precise environmental monitoring. However, conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors based on pristine materials suffer from intrinsic limitations, including low sensitivity, poor humidity tolerance, and high operating temperatures. Single-mode modification strategies often fail to simultaneously mitigate these drawbacks. Herein, we propose a synergistic modification strategy combining rare-earth doping with heterojunction engineering. Ce-doped SnO 2 /ZnO nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Among the fabricated devices, the S 5 CZ 5 sensor (1:1 mass ratio) exhibited superior performance, delivering a robust response of 55.3 to 100 ppm NO 2 at 180 °C, accompanied by rapid response/recovery kinetics (21 s/29 s) and a low theoretical detection limit of 843 ppb. Notably, the incorporation of Ce effectively modulated surface wettability, endowing the sensor with exceptional moisture resistance and long-term stability. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the atomic-scale mechanism: the ternary SnO 2 /Ce-ZnO system yields an exceptionally high NO 2 adsorption energy (−2.55 eV) and a massive interfacial charge transfer (0.49 e), while critically suppressing H 2 O interactions (adsorption energy of −0.40 eV, restricted charge transfer of 0.13 e), as corroborated by charge density difference analyses. Coupled with an optimized density of states near the Fermi level, this work achieves a multidimensional enhancement of sensing performance, offering novel insights for trace gas detection in complex environments.

Elucidating the impacts of gaseous pollutants on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation mechanisms is critical for developing effective PM2.5 mitigation strategies. However, the combined effects of NOx (NOx = NO2 + NO) and SO2 on SOA compositions under complex photochemical conditions remain mechanistically unresolved. Here, we investigated the individual roles of NO2/NO and their combined effects with SO2 on β-myrcene photooxidation. Our results showed that NO2 enhanced the SOA yield and the O:C ratio through oxidant amplification, whereas NO suppressed nucleation and oxidation states of products but facilitated particle size growth via organic nitrate partitioning. SO2 exhibited significant synergistic effects with both NO2 and NO, facilitating particle formation and growth processes. The newly built vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser photoionization aerosol mass spectrometer enabled the observation of a series of new compounds (i.e., organic peroxides, organic nitrate, and organosulfates) and identified new mechanisms of SOA formation. Notably, a novel compound with a molecular weight of 287 was characterized to be a nitrogen- and sulfur-containing species. These findings highlight the critical roles of pollutants in particle formation in environmental processes and provide key scientific support for regional air quality management and climate change mitigation.

An efficient portable gas sensor was developed to meet the needs of air quality monitoring, for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). In this study, coaxial electrospinning technology was used to synthesize porous nanofibers of indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) composite zinc oxide (ZnO), which are recognized as special semiconductor ceramic materials. The best sample (NFs.1–6) consists of a nanoparticle-based structure with interconnected pores, in contrast to the more compact, tightly bonded nanofibers. This porous structure enhances gas adsorption capacity, improving the sensor’s performance. At 200 °C, the synthesized In 2 O 3 @ZnO (NFs.1–6) nanofibers exhibited a high response value of 171.25 and a fast response time of 5 s to 100 parts per million (ppm) NO 2 . The excellent characteristic is attributed to its uniform structure and n-n homojunction, making the response values 38 times and 98 times that of pure ZnO and pure In 2 O 3 , respectively. Building on the research findings, a smart mask was developed that incorporates the nanofiber sensor to monitor NO 2 concentrations in the air, offering an innovative approach to wearable gas sensor technology by semiconductor ceramic materials.

To overcome the drawbacks of low sensitivity and limited selectivity exhibited by metal oxide sensitive materials, a metal–organic framework (MOF) derived composite (marked as UZZ) was constructed via a combined wet chemical method. UiO-66 was used as the precursor with the introduction of ZnO. The ZrO2 component in UZZ retains the unique octahedral configuration of UiO-66; on its folded surface, a large number of ZnO particles grow, whose sizes range from 20 to 40 nm. The composite exhibits excellent gas sensitivity to NO2 at room temperature. Exemplarily, the gas sensitive response to 100 ppm NO2 is 40.35, with a response time of 1.4 s and a detection limit as low as the 50 ppb level, and the stability is up to 8 weeks. The presence of numerous oxygen vacancies and n–n type heterojunctions on the surface of the UZZ composite synergistically enhances the gas-sensing performance. This finding provides a significant reference for developing new efficient and high-sensitivity metal oxide sensitive materials based on MOFs.

The detection of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) is of great significance for the environment and human health. Herein, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection strategy based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was proposed for the sensitive detection of E. coli . 4,4′,4″-Trinitrotriphenylamine (TPA-NO 2 ) was prepared using a simple nitration reaction. Subsequently, MIP films were polymerized on the surface of TPA-NO 2 using 1,3-dihydrothieno[3,2- d ]pyrimidine-2,4-dione as the functional monomer with the dual functions of specific recognition and sensitization. The linear range was 10–10 8 CFU/mL and the limit of detection was 10 CFU/mL. It showed favorable recoveries in real sample tests of milk, orange juice and tomato. Additionally, the ability of functional monomers to bind excellently with E. coli was verified using molecular docking techniques. This research provided broader possibilities for constructing MIPs-PEC sensors and analyzing the interaction mechanism between E. coli and functional monomers.
