Pseudostellaria heterophylla Polysaccharides Attenuate Diabetic Lower Limb Ischemia via CYP2E1-Mediated Mitochondrial Homeostasis and PANoptosis Regulation

Yiqiong Wang,Yi Tao,Shujing Zhang,Qiuru Wang,Zheting Liu,Shudong Lin,Yaoting Wang,Yunchao Huang,Ting Zhang,Henry Anselmo Mayala,Wenming He,Hui Shen,Ling Zhang,Hui Chai

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications pose a significant threat to human health. Diabetes-related lower limb ischemia (DLLI), as a severe complication of diabetic macrovascular disease, presents substantial challenges in clinical management. Purpose The pharmacodynamic profile and mode of action of Pseudostellaria heterophylla polysaccharides (PHP) in DLLI treatment constitute the core investigative objectives herein. Study Design Using complementary in vivo (DLLI murine model) and in vitro (high glucose (HG)-exposed human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs)) systems, PHP's bioactivity was systematically profiled. Methods In vivo: The effects of PHP on blood perfusion, microvessel density, and PANoptosome assembly in the ischemic limbs of DLLI mice were evaluated. In vitro: HUVECs treated with HG were used to assess PHP’s regulatory effects on angiogenesis functions (cell migration, proliferation, tube formation), PANoptosome/inflammasome formation, key components of the PANoptotic pathway, reactive oxygen species (ROS/mtROS), mitochondrial homeostasis, and autophagy. Transcriptomic analysis was conducted to identify potential target genes. Results In vivo: PHP significantly improved blood perfusion, increased microvessel density, and modulated PANoptosome assembly in ischemic limbs. In vitro: PHP reversed HG-induced angiogenesis dysfunction, inhibited PANoptosis and oxidative stress, restored mitochondrial function, and enhanced autophagic activity. Mechanism: PHP exerted its effects by targeting cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP2E1 through downregulating its expression, thereby alleviating mitochondrial damage and PANoptosis. Additionally, CYP2E1 downregulation promoted endothelial cell migration. Conclusion We pioneered a PANoptosome-centric framework for DLLI, proving that PHP targets CYP2E1 to restore mitochondrial homeostasis, inhibit PANoptosis, and drive angiogenesis, thereby offering a novel natural product-derived therapeutic strategy. Collectively, this work establishes PHP as a promising candidate for DLLI treatment through CYP2E1-mediated restoration of mitochondrial homeostasis and PANoptosis suppression.

A heterostructured PPy/ZnO layer assembled on a PAN nanofibrous membrane with robust visible-light-induced self-cleaning properties for highly efficient water purification with fast separation flux

Liyun Zhang,Yi He,Pingya Luo,Lan Ma,Yi Fan,Shihong Zhang,Heng Shi,Shuangshuang Li,Yiling Nie

Developing superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surfaces to restrict oil pollution during oil/water separation processes has been an effective approach. However, the inevitable adsorption and aggregation of organic contaminants onto the membrane surface from complex oily sewage usually causes an irreversible decrease in flux, damages the anti-oil-fouling properties and shortens the lifespan of the separation membrane. Thus, neoteric antifouling and renewable membranes are highly desired. Herein, based on stabilized PAN nanofibers and following the assembly of a heterostructured PPy/ZnO layer with hierarchical structure onto the nanofiber surfaces, we report a robust visible-light-induced self-repairable oil/water separation membrane. The SPAN–PPy/ZnO membrane displays superhydrophilicity (≈0°) and underwater superoleophobicity (>150°) toward different oils, with robust mechanical strength (Young's modulus ≈ 408 MPa) and a high underwater oil intrusion pressure (>120 kPa). Importantly, the as-prepared membrane not only exhibits ultrafast permeation flux and high separation efficiency for oil/dye/water emulsions, but it also displays robust recovery abilities (96%) from organic pollutants after 20 min of light irradiation. We anticipate that this composite membrane with outstanding separation capabilities and robust flux recovery capabilities can provide a novel method for the treatment and purification of large volumes of wastewater.

Ultrathin g-PAN/PANI-encapsulated Cu nanoparticles decorated on SrTiO3 with high stability as an efficient photocatalyst for the H2 evolution and degradation of 4-nitrophenol under visible-light irradiation

Nan Sun,Yong Zhang,Xinru Li,Yuhan Jing,Zhengdong Zhang,Yu Gao,Jianqi Liu,Honglin Tan,Xiaoming Cai,Jinming Cai

Copper-based photocatalysts have attracted considerable attention because of their great prospects in photochemical conversions. However, there are still challenges faced during the preparation of copper-based photocatalysts with have high catalytic efficiency and high stability. In this study, polyaniline (PANI) was doped in an ultra-thin graphitized polyacrylonitrile (g-PAN) layer (denoted as CI), and Cu nanoparticles (NPs) were wrapped in the CI layer encapsulated on SrTiO3 (STO), which is designed as an efficient and low-cost photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. Benefiting from the unique CI layer structure, the optimized Cu@CI/STO photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate obtained was 371 μmol g−1 h−1, which is higher than the hydrogen evolution rate of Cu@g-PAN/STO (265.25 μmol g−1 h−1). Moreover, the CI layer demonstrated a quasi-cocatalyst effect. The ultra-thin CI layer not only protects the Cu NPs from oxidation but also promotes charge separation, which distinctly boosts H2 evolution, as indicated by the photoluminescence emission spectra, EIS Nyquist diagram and Mott–Schottky diagram. In addition, the degradation rate of Cu@CI/STO is approximately 4-fold higher than that of Cu/STO in the photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol under visible light. This study delivers a new method to protect Cu NPs and demonstrates the prospect for the rational design of copper-based photocatalysts with high stability and efficiency.

Synthesis of a novel biomass-based flame retardant featuring vinyl-terminated chemical cross-linking and application in flame retardancy, smoke suppression, toxicity reduction and mechanical enhancement of PAN composite fibers

Chunlong Zuo,Wei Tan,Jieyun Zhao,Lina Jiang,Yongli Zhang,Yuanlin Ren,Xiaohui Liu

To develop green and efficient polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers with excellent fire safety properties, a new biomass-based flame retardant (PPC@VA) with vinyl-terminated groups was prepared based on the reaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphonitrile, teat polyphenols, ethylenediamine and vinylphosphonic acid. Subsequently, it was mixed with spinning solution to obtain PPC@VA/PAN through wet spinning, which were then chemically cross-linked via thermal initiation to achieve CC-PPC@VA/PAN fibers. CC-PPC@VA/PAN showed a significant improvement in flame retardancy with a limiting oxygen index value of 32.5 %. The peak of smoke production rate, total smoke production and CO production rate were lowered by 81.9 %, 77.8 % and 91.3 %. Besides, the hazardous gas HCN was greatly suppressed. Owing to the macromolecular entanglement, hydrogen bonding and covalent cross-linking, CC-PPC@VA/PAN improved elongation at break and tensile strength by 19.2 % and 72.1 %. Also, chemical cross-linking contributed to decrease the migration of P/N-based flame retardants, lower the potential risk of water eutrophication and increased the service life of the fibers.

Free assembly of 2D/2D MXene coupled porous ZnIn₂S₄ heterojunction onto PAN fibrous membrane for breaking through the permeability limitation of O/W emulsion separation and exceptional self-cleaning ability

Xinyue Duan,Yingqing Zhan,Hongshan Jia,Jie Liu,Yajie Lei,Jing Yang,Yuxing Han

MXene nanosheets based membrane materials encounter challenges in the field of oil-water separation, including narrow interlayer spacing, insufficient stability, and limited photocatalytic self-cleaning efficiency. To address the aforementioned issues, the 2D/2D MXene nanosheets based heterojunction was constructed through in situ growth of porous ZnIn 2 S 4 and freely assembled onto a PAN fibrous membrane with via vacuum-assisted self-assembly technology. The resulting MXene/ZnIn 2 S 4 @PAN fibrous composite membrane (FCM) exhibited high flux and exceptional photocatalytic self-cleaning property. On the one hand, the porous petal-like structure and intrinsic hydrophilic nature of MXene/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction offered the remarkable nanochannel modulation capability, enabling the composite membrane to achieve high permeability (5471.13 -6732.57   L   m -2 h -1 ) compared with the conventional MXene based composite membranes with compacted lamellar structure. On the other hand, the heterojunction formed between MXene and ZnIn 2 S 4 significantly improved electron conduction efficiency and effectively regulated the energy band structure, as confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectrum and UV–visible near infrared diffuse reflection test. This imparted the composite membrane with exceptional photocatalytic self-cleaning capability for the degradation of organic dyes, with the degradation efficiency reaching as high as 92.15%. Besides, the rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed on the basis of free radical quenching and EPR experiments. Such high-flux and enhanced self-cleaning PAN FCM showed the potential in dealing with complicated membrane fouling issues and separating emulsified oily wastewater.

Thin Yet Strong Composite Polymer Electrolyte Reinforced by Nanofibrous Membrane for Flexible Dendrite-Free Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Genxi Yu,Long Pan,Heng Zhang,Yaping Wang,Kai Li,Daming Chen,Jian Chen,Zheng Ming Sun

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) are promising for the realization of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) with high energy density and safety. However, CPEs suffer from insufficient ionic conductivity and low mechanical strength at thin films. Herein this study, a porously nanofibrous Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate prepared by electrospinning is filled with polyethylene oxide (PEO)/lithium salt (LiTFSI) to form LLZO/PAN/PEO/LiTFSI (LPPL) CPEs. The robust LLZO/PAN nanofibrous membrane mechanically supports the soft PEO/LiTFSI, while the dispersed LLZO together with the PEO/LiTFSI forms a dual Li + conductive pathway. Benefiting from the great synergies between the building blocks, the obtained LPPL CPEs possess a high tensile strength (8.2 MPa) with a thickness of only 20 μm, resulting in a good ionic conductivity. In addition, the LPPL CPEs also exhibit a wide electrochemical window (5.5 V), high thermal stability, and excellent stability with lithium metal. As a result, the LiFePO 4 (LFP)/LPPL/Li SSLMBs show good rate capability and cycling stability (100.5 mA h g −1 @1.0 C after 430 cycles) at 60 °C. In addition, the soft-packaged LFP/LPPL/Li SSLMBs demonstrate high safety under destructive conditions such as bending and cutting. Moreover, the LPPL CPEs are also applicable to the SSLMBs with high-energy LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) or high-capacity sulfur cathodes.

A robust underwater superoleophobic aminated polyacrylonitrile membrane embedded with CNTs-COOH for durable oil/water and dyes/oil emulsions separation

Liyun Zhang,Yi He,Pingya Luo,Lan Ma,Shuangshuang Li,Yiling Nie,Jing Yu,Xiao Guo

Considering the emulsified oil and water-soluble dyes in wastewater, the exploitation of easy-manufacturing, energy-saving and high-efficiency separation materials is urgently required. In this work, integrating the positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) with negatively charged CNTs-COOH constructed the superhydrophilic Cassie–Baxter structure onto the electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane surface by ultrasonic, electrostatic interaction and thermal treatment. Based on it, the PEN@CNTs membrane achieved efficient separation for surfactant-free, tween 80-stabilized, SDS-stabilized, and CTAB-stabilized emulsions (the fluxes reached 508–3158 L m −2 h −1 , the separation efficiency reached 99.42%) by the splendid water-penetration and oil-repellency, electrostatic interaction, and “aperture sieve”. Moreover, because of the porosity and strong charged surface of PEN@CNTs membrane, the anionic dyes can be quickly removed by one-step filtrate method (∼403 L m −2 h −1 ). Meanwhile, the PEN@CNTs membrane also achieved synchronous and efficient remediation for oil/dye mixture emulsions after many cycles. More importantly, facing the complex physical and chemical environments, the combination of the stabilized PEN membrane, inactive CNTs-COOH layer, and the bond of embedding method between CNTs-COOH and PEN nanofibers made the PEN@CNTs membrane demonstrated robust stability and durable separation capability.
