A novel family of Ti3C2Tx/ferrite composites with high reflection loss was developed using a facile in situ co-precipitation method. The as-synthesized Ti3C2Tx/ferrite composite with a 5 wt% Ti3C2Tx MXenes loading exhibited high reflection loss (−42.5 dB) at 13.5 GHz. The effective absorption bandwidth of the 5 wt% Ti3C2Tx/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite reached ∼3 GHz (12–15 GHz) in the K-band. The incorporation of Ti3C2Tx MXenes improved the electromagnetic impedance of the Ti3C2Tx/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite resulting from the enhanced electrical conductivity. The potential electromagnetic wave absorption mechanisms were revealed, which may contain magnetic loss, dielectric loss, conductivity loss, multiple reflections, and scattering. The technique is facile, fast, scalable, and favorable for the commercialization of this composite. This study provides a potential way to develop EM wave absorbing materials for a large family of MXenes/ferrite composites.

Investigation of dispersing solvents on processing Ti 3 C 2 T x thin films revealed that deionized water is superior to realize tight stacking and high orientation of MXene nanosheets.
A simultaneous elevation of Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of neat Ti 3 C 2 T x films is achieved by increasing the centrifugal speed of MXene aqueous suspensions due to the energy filtering effect.
Further construction of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites significantly strengthens Seebeck coefficient yet disrupts the stacking of MXene nanosheets.

Soft electro-ionic actuators have received extensive research and attention due to their advantages such as low voltage response and adjustable deformation. However, they have not been able to enter the actual industry application like traditional rigid actuators; one of the reasons may be that the kinematic properties of actuators have been less studied. The electro-ionic actuator based on Ti3C2Tx MXene-CNT/PPy electrode prepared in this paper shows good bending displacement (18.8 mm) and strain (0.63%) under 4 V voltage. In this article, the overlapping nature and exponential function relationship of the actuator end-point trajectories are preliminarily discussed, and the morphology change and cubic polynomial function relationship of the actuator body are considered. Moreover, in application, a novel proof-of-concept model of smart wearable finger straps is proposed. This study is a unique attempt and is hoped to provide a new research perspective in the field of soft electro-ionic actuators.

Ni 0.2 Mn 0.4 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 (NMZF) nanoparticles were anchored on the surface of MXene(Ti 3 C 2 T x ) to form Ti 3 C 2 T x /NMZF nanocomposites for optimization of microwave absorption performance. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /NMZF nanocomposites were synthesized by using a four-step strategy, including sonication, stirring, hydrothermal reduction and vacuum drying. More than 40 percent of the NMZF nanoparticles in this nanocomposite were assembled to form a conductive network. Meanwhile, the multilayer MXene acted as a framework to host the NMZF nanoparticles, providing dipolar polarization, interfacial polarization and eddy current loss. Benefiting from the structure design of MXene, combined with magnetic materials and optimized impedance matching, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /NMZF exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.39 dB, with a thickness of 2.97 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.2 GHz. Therefore, such a facile method could be used to construct nanocomposites with microwave absorption performance (-57.39 dB, 3.2 GHz), so as to address microwave pollution issues.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene material exhibits exceptional dielectric properties and a distinct layered structure, making it a noteworthy microwave absorbing material. However, its microwave absorption performance is limited due to poor impedance matching and a single loss mechanism. To address these issues, this work develops a solvothermal method to introduce the magnetic component CoNi alloy and generate organic polymer PANI through in-situ polymerization, resulting in the preparation of Ti 3 C 2 T x /PANI/CoNi ternary composites that significantly improve impedance matching and microwave absorption performance. The microwave absorption properties of the binary and ternary composites are compared, and the superior performance of the ternary composites is emphasized. Among the ternary composites, M-P-CN 3:1:8 exhibited an excellent microwave absorption performance, demonstrating a minimum RL value of −55.48 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.1 GHz at a thickness of 2.0 mm. The synergistic effect of multiple loss mechanisms, multilayer structures, and multiple interfacial polarization methods further contribute to the enhanced microwave absorption performance of ternary composites. This study provides a straightforward method for synthesizing and designing multi-component composite absorbing materials based on MXene.

Self-healing coating technology is an emerging strategy for extending the longevity of anticorrosion coating. Nevertheless, a significant challenge lies in ensuring that the coating can endure multiple cycles in intricate environments while sustaining a stable mechanical performance. In this study, we prepared a TiO2/Ti3C2Tx/PDMS elastomer coating by incorporating Ti3C2Tx nanosheets to improve mechanical properties and enhance physical barrier performance through photografting. Compared to PDMS without TiO2/Ti3C2Tx, the tensile strength increased from 10.32 to 16.24 MPa. Even after undergoing multiple loading–unloading cycles, the elastomer retained 88.98% of its initial strength, demonstrating remarkable durability and self-healing capabilities. Due to the presence of dynamic disulfide bonds, the coating can undergo a self-healing process within 30 min under 60 °C heating conditions. Furthermore, the presence of TiO2/Ti3C2Tx modified through photografting enhanced hydrophobicity and formed a micro/nanolayered “maze effect” structure, establishing a passive anticorrosion mechanism. This structure demonstrated sustained corrosion resistance for up to 50 days in aggressive environments, effectively preventing the corrosive medium from compromising the metal substrate.

Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes are renowned for the unique feature of strong metallic conductivity, whereas the lack of semiconductive nature has become a crucial bottleneck that impedes MXenes’ rapid development in electronic devices. The challenge mainly comes from the stringent requirements for specific 2D compositions, whose synthesis and/or exfoliation techniques are too difficult to succeed. Here we proposed a facile and universal approach for fabricating semiconductive MXenes. Our demonstration showed that through hydrothermal-assisted intercalation treatment of the prototypical MXene-Ti 3 C 2 T x , shallow and deep Ti-lattice vacancies can be generated in its 2D nanosheets, weakening the original strong metallicity and even facilitating the wide-bandgap semiconductivity. Reciprocating bias polarization on the semiconductive 2D-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheet can induce reversible electrochemical-like migration of the surface anionic ligands, which enables high-nonlinearity and ultralow-current electrical switching capabilities for potential volatile selector applications. Our idea opens a new avenue for tuning the physical and chemical properties of MXenes, promoting their wide applications, especially in the field of 2D electronics.

Detecting nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at room temperature (RT) is crucial for advancing environmental monitoring technologies, enabling efficient and practical air quality assessment. Two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanomaterials, recognized for their large specific surface area (SSA), abundant functional groups, and tunable electrical properties, have attracted considerable attention as promising candidates for room temperature gas-sensing applications. However, despite their potential, challenges, such as low gas adsorption efficiency, limited sensitivity, and poor selectivity, hinder their broader application and development, highlighting the need for further research. Here, we introduce a zero-dimensional (0D)/2D heterojunction gas-sensitive structure by synthesizing SnS2 quantum dot (QD)-sensitized Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites via a hydrothermal method. The carefully designed gas sensor exhibits a significantly enhanced response value (RV) of 5.83% for 10 ppm of NO2 and a low detection limit of 500 ppb at RT, achieving an RV that is 5.8 times higher than that of pure Ti3C2Tx. Additionally, the sensor demonstrates high sensitivity (0.76 ppm–1 in the 0.5–5 ppm range), excellent selectivity, and outstanding stability, with a performance degradation of only 3.2% over 4 weeks. The exceptional performance arises from the synergistic effects of the quantum confinement properties of SnS2 QDs and the superior conductivity of Ti3C2Tx, which together provide abundant active sites for gas adsorption and facilitate efficient charge transfer pathways. Furthermore, the formation of the heterojunction modulates the resistance, enhancing room temperature sensing capabilities. The synthesized nanomaterials offer significant potential for advancing the design of heterostructures that integrate 0D QDs with 2D nanomaterials, paving the way for highly efficient NO2 detection at RT. Moreover, maintaining an optimal operating temperature further enhances the accuracy and reliability of real-time NO2 monitoring systems.

Plasma catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation has emerged as a promising approach for converting CO 2 into valuable chemicals such as CO, offering a potential solution to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we investigate the synergistic effect between plasma and a Cu/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation via the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Our findings reveal a significant enhancement in CO 2 conversion (33.1%) and CO yield (31.9%) when using the Cu/Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst compared to plasma alone or with a Ti 3 C 2 T x foam. Plasma treatment creates unsaturated Ti sites on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface, dramatically improving CO 2 adsorption and activation, while Cu nanoparticles significantly enhances the activation and dissociation of H 2 molecules on the catalyst surface. These surface adsorbed hydrogen species readily hydrogenate adsorbed CO 2 molecules through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. Furthermore, these surface hydrogen species can also participate in the conversion of gas-phase CO 2 molecules through the Eley-Rideal pathway. This work sheds light on the synergistic plasma catalytic mechanism and provide insights for optimizing CO 2 hydrogenation processes using MXene catalysts.

The highly parallel artificial neural systems based on transistor-like devices have recently attracted widespread attention due to their high-efficiency computing potential and the ability to mimic biological neurobehavior. For the past decades, plenty of breakthroughs related to synaptic transistors have been investigated and reported. In this work, a kind of photoelectronic transistor that successfully mimics the behaviors of biological synapses has been proposed and systematically analyzed. For the individual device, MXenes and the self-assembled titanium dioxide on the nanosheet surface serve as floating gate and tunneling layers, respectively. As the unit electronics of the neural network, the typical synaptic behaviors and the reliable memory stability of the synaptic transistors have been demonstrated through the voltage test. Furthermore, for the first time, the UV-responsive synaptic properties of the MXenes floating gated transistor and its applications, including conditional reflex and supervised learning, have been measured and realized. These photoelectric synapse characteristics illustrate the great potential of the device in bio-imitation vision applications. Finally, through the simulation based on an artificial neural network algorithm, the device successfully realizes the recognition application of handwritten digital images. Thus, this article provides a highly feasible solution for applying artificial synaptic devices to hardware neuromorphic networks.

Although Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is a promising material for many applications such as catalysis, energy storage, electromagnetic interference shielding due to its metallic conductivity and high processability, it’s poor resistance to oxidation at high temperatures makes its application under harsh environments challenging. Here, we report an air-stable Ti 3 C 2 T x based composite with extracted bentonite (EB) nanosheets. In this case, oxygen molecules are shown to be preferentially adsorbed on EB. The saturated adsorption of oxygen on EB further inhibits more oxygen molecules to be adsorbed on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x due to the weakened p-d orbital hybridization between adsorbed O 2 and Ti 3 C 2 T x , which is induced by the Ti 3 C 2 T x /EB interface coupling. As a result, the composite is capable of tolerating high annealing temperatures (above 400 °C for several hours) both in air or humid environment, indicating highly improved antioxidation properties in harsh condition. The above finding is shown to be independent on the termination ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x obtained through different synthesis routes. Utilized as terahertz shielding materials, the composite retains its shielding ability after high-temperature treatment even up to 600 °C, while pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x is completely oxidized with no terahertz shielding ability. Joule heating and thermal cycling performance are also demonstrated.

Arsenic contamination in water poses significant health risks, necessitating effective detection methods to ensure public safety. In this study, a novel FeS x @MOF-808/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite sensor was introduced for the electrochemical detection of arsenite (As(III)), a highly toxic form of arsenic. Based on a straightforward synthetic approach, the composite enhances the sensitivity and selectivity for As(III) detection. The electrochemical performance in various buffer solutions was characterized through square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. The sensor demonstrated exceptional sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.02 ng/mL and a broad linear response range of 0.05–100 ng/mL, surpassing World Health Organization guidelines. Notably, the FeS x @MOF-808/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite exhibited minimal interference from common heavy metals. The superior adsorption properties, attributed to the high surface area and porosity of the composite, facilitated rapid arsenic ion capture. The developed FeS x @MOF-808/Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor offers a robust platform for reliable As(III) detection in diverse water matrices. This innovation contributes to environmental monitoring, providing a cost-effective and efficient method for arsenic detection, particularly in resource-limited regions. The findings underscore the potential of integrating advanced materials into electrochemical sensors, thereby paving the way for future developments in sustainable water quality management.
