Abstract Transparent wood (TW) is a promising optical material, which provides a potential choice for windows applications. As a polymer composite material, the mechanical, thermal stability, and flame retardant of TW are crucial properties in practical applications. In this study, the delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) were dispersed into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and then infiltrated into delignified wood to prepare MXene-reinforced transparent wood (TW-MXene). The MXene addition leads to an interlocking mechanism between MXene fillers with a polymer matrix (e.g., PVA, cellulose scaffold), thereby improving the tensile strength of TW. Besides, the dynamic mechanical analysis also proved that the tensile strength of TW-MXene is significantly higher than pure transparent wood with changing the temperature at −50 to 150 °C. The TW added with 1 wt% MXene maintained a lower thermal conductivity of 0.31 W m −1 K −1 , and it showed better UV resistance than TW. Besides, the thermal decomposition rate of TW-MXene composite slows down, and its weight loss rate decreases with the addition of MXene. Furthermore, the presence of 1 wt% MXene endowed TW with 9.3 and 22.0% reductions for PHRR and THR, respectively. This strategy provides an insight into the development of high-performance transparent wood composites with the potential to be used in building fields. Graphical abstract

With photoconductor being transferred and separated, interface contact plays a crucial role in developing composites photocatalyst . In the present work, 2D crystalline g-C 3 N 4 (called as CCN) with 2D TiO 2 nanosheets (called as TO) obtained in situ oxidized single-layered Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is designed by an electrostatic self-assembly technology. This CCN/TO nanosheets system with a few TiO 2 nanosheets distributed to the surface is not only prolonging lifetime of photoelectron but also stimulating photogenerated carriers transferred in contact interface. The electron transfer mechanism of CCN/TO is further proved by Pt photo-deposition method. Therein, the optimal CCN-TO-0.6 exhibits excellent performance of H 2 generation compared with single photocatalyst of CCN. The result shows that the crystalline g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts introduced TiO 2 with interfacial effect favorably reduce H + to H 2 and enhance photocatalytic activity .

Smart wearable electronics have drawn increasing attention for their potential applications in personal thermal management, human health monitoring, portable energy conversion/storage, electronic skin and so on. However, it is still a critical challenge to fabricate the multifunctional textiles with tunable morphology and performance while performing well in flexibility, air permeability , wearing comfortability. Herein, we develop a novel roll-to-roll layer-by-layer assembly strategy to construct bark-shaped carbon nanotube (CNT)/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite film on the fiber surface. The fabricated bark-shaped CNT/MXene decorated fabrics (CMFs) exhibit good flexibility, air permeability and electrical conductivity (sheet resistance, 6.6 Ω/□). In addition, the CMFs demonstrate good electrothermal performance (70.9 °C, 5 V), electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance (EMI shielding effectiveness, 30.0 dB under X-Brand), and high sensitivity as the flexible piezoresistive sensors for monitoring the human motions. Importantly, our CMFs show distinctive EMI shielding mechanism, where a great proportion of incident electromagnetic microwaves are reflected by the bark-shaped CNT/MXene films owing to the multi-interface scattering effects. This work may provide a new strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional textile-based electronics and pave the way for smart wearable electronics.

Strain sensors with good stability are vital to the development of wearable healthcare monitoring systems. However, the design of strain sensor with both duration stability and environmental stability is still a challenge. In this work, we propose an ultra-stable and washable strain sensor by embedding a coupled composite film of carbon nanotube (CNT) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The composite strain sensor with embedded microstructure and uneven surface makes it conformal to skin, while the CNT/MXene sensing layer exhibits a resistance sensitive to strain. This sensor shows reliable responses at different frequencies and with long-term cycling durability (over 1,000 cycles). Meanwhile, the CNT/MXene/PDMS composite strain sensor provides the advantages of superior anti-interference to temperature change and water washing. The results demonstrate less than 10% resistance changes as the temperature rises from −20 to 80 °C or after sonication in water for 120 min, respectively. The composite sensor is applied to monitor human joint motions, such as bending of finger, wrist and elbow. Moreover, the simultaneous monitoring of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal and joint movement while riding a sports bicycle is demonstrated, enabling the great potential of the as-fabricated sensor in real-time human healthcare monitoring.

With the rapid development of information technology and electronics, the traditional textiles hardly fulfill the requirements of wearable electronics. Multifunctional textile-based electronics integrated with energy storage, joule heating, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and sensing has become a favorable solution. Herein, a scalable spray-coating and dip-coating strategy is developed to fabricate the multifunctional reduced graphene oxide/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes decorated cotton fabrics. The RGO/MXene modified fabrics show hydrophilic surface, high electrical conductivity, good flexibility and breathability. In addition, the RGO/MXene modified fabrics demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance, and the assembled all-solid-state supercapacitors show one of the highest specific capacitances of 383.3 F g −1 (258 mF cm −2 ). More importantly, the RGO/MXene fabrics show distinctive negative resistance variation and high sensitivity when they are applied as the strain sensors to detect the human motions including the bending of finger, elbow, knee and swallowing process. Moreover, the RGO/MXene fabrics show good joule heating and EMI shielding performance. This work may shed light on cost-effective but high-performance textile-based strain sensors, EMI shielding and electrochemical energy storage devices, and paves the way for the development of multifunctional wearable electronics.

Co-Ni bimetallic oxides were successfully deposited on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets by atomic layer deposition technology and used as pseudocapacitive materials for supercapacitors. The uniform distribution of metal oxide nanoparticles on MXene nanosheets endows the pseudocapacitive materials more active sites and the synergistic effect between CoO x and NiO greatly improves the electrochemical performance. Specifically, as the deposited cycle increased to 90, the sample showed the optimal electrochemical performance with specific capacitance up to 1960 F g −1 (1 A g −1 ), 20.3 times higher by than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, excellent rate capability (87.3% capacitance retention, 1–18 A g −1 ) and 90.2% capacitance retention after 8000 cycles.

Pillaring technologies have been considered as an effective way to improve lithium storage performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Nevertheless, the pillared hybrids suffer from sluggish Li + diffusion kinetics and electronic transportation due to the compact multi-layered MXene structure, thus exhibiting inferior rate performance. Herein, the few-layered Ti 3 C 2 MXene (f-Ti 3 C 2 MXene) which is free from restacking can be prepared quickly based on the NH 4 + ions method. Besides, Fe nanocomplex pillared few-layered Ti 3 C 2 T x (FPTC) heterostructures are fabricated via the intercalation of Fe ions into the interlayer of f-Ti 3 C 2 MXene. The f-Ti 3 C 2 MXene which is immune to restacking can provide a highly conductive substrate for the rapid transport of Li + ions and electrons and possess adequate electrolyte accessible area. Moreover, f-Ti 3 C 2 MXene can efficiently relieve the aggregation, prevent the pulverization and buffer the large volume change of Fe nanocomplex during lithiation/delithiation process, leading to enhanced charge transfer kinetics and excellent structural stability of FPTC composites. Consequently, the FPTC hybrids exhibit a high capacity of 535 mAh·g −1 after 150 cycles at 0.5 A·g −1 and an enhanced rate performance with 310 mAh·g −1 after 850 cycles at 5 A·g −1 . This strategy is facile, universal and can be extended to fabricate various few-layered MXene-derived hybrids with superior rate capability.

An increasing utilization of flexible healthcare electronics and biomedicine-related therapeutic materials urges the development of multifunctional wearable/flexible smart fabrics for personal therapy and health management. However, it is currently a challenge to fabricate multifunctional and on-body healthcare electronic devices with reliable mechanical flexibility, excellent breathability, and self-controllable joule heating effects. Here, we fabricate a multifunctional MXene-based smart fabric by depositing 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets onto cellulose fiber nonwoven fabric via special MXene–cellulose fiber interactions. Such multifunctional fabrics exhibit sensitive and reversible humidity response upon H2O-induced swelling/contraction of channels between the MXene interlayers, enabling wearable respiration monitoring application. Besides, it can also serve as a low-voltage thermotherapy platform due to its fast and stable electro-thermal response. Interestingly, water molecular extraction induces electrical response upon heating, i.e., functioning as a temperature alarm, which allows for real-time temperature monitoring for thermotherapy platform without low-temperature burn risk. Furthermore, metal-like conductivity of MXene renders the fabric an excellent Joule heating effect, which can moderately kill bacteria surrounding the wound in bacteria-infected wound healing therapy. This work introduces a multifunctional smart flexible fabric suitable for next-generation wearable electronic devices for mobile healthcare and personal medical therapy.

Direct methanol fuel cells with high energy conversion efficiency and low hazard emissions have aroused great attention from both academic and industrial communities, but their large-scale commercial application has been blocked by high costs as well as short lifespan of the anode Pt catalysts. Here, we demonstrate a simple and scalable noncovalent strategy for the synthesis of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Pt nanoworms grown on poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride) (PDDA)-functionalized Ti3C2Tx nanosheets as anode catalysts for methanol electrooxidation. Interestingly, the introduction of PDDA on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets can not only effectively adjust their surface charge property to strengthen the electrostatic interaction between metal and support but also induce the stereoassembly of worm-shaped Pt nanocrystals with abundant catalytically active grain boundaries, which enable the resulting hybrid to express high electrocatalytic activity, remarkable durability, and strong antipoisoning ability for methanol electrooxidation, which are better than those of the traditional Pt nanoparticle electrocatalysts loaded on carbon black, carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxide, and MXene matrixes. Theoretical simulations disclose that the more stable worm-shaped Pt configuration with an optimized electronic structure on the Ti3C2Tx surface possesses a weaker CO adsorption ability than that of the Pt nanoclusters, thereby providing a dramatically enhanced and sustainable electrocatalytic performance.

The phenomena of ice formation and growth are of great importance for climate science, regenerative medicine, cryobiology, and food science. Hence, how to control ice formation and growth remains a challenge in these fields and attracts great interest from widespread researchers. Herein, the ice regulation ability of the two-dimensional MXene Ti3C2Tx in both the cooling and thawing processes is explored. Molecularly speaking, the ice growth inhibition mechanism of Ti3C2Tx MXene is ascribed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between functional groups of −O–, −OH, and −F distributed on the surface of Ti3C2Tx and ice/water molecules, which was elucidated by the molecular dynamics simulation method. In the cooling process, Ti3C2Tx can decrease the supercooling degree and inhibit the sharp edge morphology of ice crystals. Moreover, taking advantage of the outstanding photothermal conversion property of Ti3C2Tx, rapid ice melting can be achieved, thus reducing the phenomena of devitrification and ice recrystallization. Based on the ice restriction performance of Ti3C2Tx mentioned above, Ti3C2Tx is applied for cryopreservation of stem-cell-laden hydrogel constructs. The results show that Ti3C2Tx can reduce cryodamage to stem cells induced by ice injury in both the cooling and thawing processes and finally increase the cell viability from 38.4% to 80.9%. In addition, Ti3C2Tx also shows synergetic antibacterial activity under laser irradiation, thus realizing sterile cryopreservation of stem cells. Overall, this work explores the ice inhibition performance of Ti3C2Tx, elucidates the physical mechanism, and further achieves application of Ti3C2Tx in the field of cell cryopreservation.

Corrosion of metals leads to great economic losses and safety hazards. To address the corrosion problem of Al alloy in aggressive medium, two-dimensional (2D) graphene-like MXene composite coatings are proposed to enhance the corrosion resistance . Despite great progress, it still faces challenge to design high-performance MXene-based composite coating via a facile strategy because of the complex surface functionalization , orientation control, and the conductivity of MXene. Herein, a multilayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/dodecyltrimethoxysilane (MXene/DTMS) coating is prepared by a layer-by-layer spraying method at ambient temperature to maximize the physical barrier of MXene nanosheets . As a result, the incorporation of MXene nanosheets can avoid the structural defects of silane coating after curing process, thereby improving the coating resistance and charge transfer resistance by ~11- and ~390-fold in comparison to Al counterpart, respectively. Beyond the traditionally complex surface functionalization and orientation control, the multilayer coating with complete coverage and strong physical barrier ability exhibits the high corrosion resistance with a impedance modulus of 3.74 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The designed coating shows promising applications in surface protection on Al alloy used in transmission cable, shafts, gears, and blades for offshore wind turbines .

The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding abilities of MXene-based conductive nanocomposites are promising for ensuring the steady operation of electronic equipment and protecting people from electromagnetic radiation. The development of comprehensive membranes that satisfy all the essential requirements of excellent EMI shielding and infrared (IR) stealth performance remains a significant issue, despite the high EMI shielding capabilities of MXene-based composite membranes . Here, we report a sandwich-structured Ti 3 C 2 T x -MXene/reduced-graphene-oxide (MrG) membrane with high conductivities and abundant interior blowholes for high-performance EMI shielding and IR stealth. Taking advantage of the continuously conductive routes and distinctive porous structures, an 18-μm-thickness MrG membrane shows a high EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of 89.1 dB and a satisfactory absolute EMI SE ( S S E /t) of up to 55282.8 d B ⋅ c m 2 ⋅ g − 1 , which is the best result for MXene-based nanocomposites with similar thickness. Moreover, the MrG membrane also exhibits superior thermal camouflage ability for objects in low-temperature circumstances (like winter) and high-temperature cases (like summer), demonstrating the great promise as high-performance EMI shielding membranes for IR stealth, security protection, and counter-surveillance.
