In this work, a one-step approach through UV-curing technology was developed to fabricate polyelectrolyte-based humidity-sensing coatings. The humidity-sensing coatings were prepared by the photo-polymerization of three monomers via UV irradiation: quaternary ammonium salt of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEB) served as humidity-sensing monomer, methyl methacrylate (MMA) tailored the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the coating, and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) enhanced the stability and repeatability via crosslinking. The influence of the introduction of MMA and HDDA in the coating on the humidity-sensing performance was studied. The introduction of hydrophobic monomer and crosslinking agent could not only enhance the response and decrease the hysteresis of the sensing coating, but also improve the stability and repeatability of the coating at high relative humidity. Under optimized conditions, the prepared humidity-sensing coating showed a wide detection range (22 %–91 %RH), small hysteresis (2 %RH), and short response time (5 s) and recovery time (76 s). The bending test of the humidity-sensing coating showed that the sensing coating has good flexibility. The whole process is rather simple (one step), highly efficient (accomplished in several minutes), scalable, and environmental-friendly, which provides a promising strategy in fabricating flexible humidity-sensing devices.

Acute ultraviolet exposure disrupts the epidermal barrier, induces oxidative stress, and accelerates extracellular matrix degradation, necessitating effective strategies for photodamage repair. Here, we establish a molecular-weight-graded agarose system-Aga-U, Aga-H, Aga-M, and Aga-L-to assess the effect of molecular weight on the physicochemical and biological properties of agarose. Controlled hydrolysis generated agarose fractions with progressively reduced molecular weight, resulting in enhanced solubility, hydrophilicity, fluidity, and antioxidant capacity. All fractions exhibited good cytocompatibility and promoted zebrafish caudal-fin regeneration, with Aga-L demonstrating the strongest bioactivity. In vitro and in vivo evaluations, including fibroblast assays and zebrafish and UV-induced acute photodamage mouse models, revealed that Aga-L most effectively restored the epidermal barrier, reduced oxidative stress, and enhanced collagen deposition. Molecular analyses showed that Aga-L downregulated MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, p-c-Fos, and p-c-Jun and upregulating Nrf2, HO-1, Col I and Col III. These findings identify low-molecular-weight agarose as a potent bioactive polysaccharide for repairing UV-induced skin injury and provide a basis for developing agarose-based therapeutic strategies.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely used as inorganic UV filters, yet their photocatalytic activity and resulting phototoxicity raise serious safety issues. Here, we report a Pickering double emulsion templating strategy for constructing chitosan-based porous microspheres encapsulating TiO2 NPs (TiO2@CS-PMs), with controllable microstructures and mass loading of TiO2 NPs. The oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion template confines TiO2 NPs within a cross-linked porous polymer skeleton. Structural confinement, combined with the antioxidant capacity of chitosan (CS), greatly reduces UV-induced reactive oxygen species generation of TiO2 NPs. In vitro assays reveal that TiO2@CS-PMs have good biocompatibility and significantly lower phototoxicity to HaCaT cells than naked TiO2 NPs. The porous architecture promotes optical confinement, and the encapsulation causes interfacial interactions between TiO2 NPs and the CS matrix, resulting in broadened and enhanced UV attenuation. Sunscreen incorporating TiO2@CS-PMs exhibits higher sun protection factors and cellular photoprotection at lower TiO2 NPs doses, while the CS matrix provides antibacterial activity. This work reveals Pickering double emulsion templating porous microstructure as a versatile platform for managing particle photochemistry, providing insights into the development of safer and multifunctional UV filters.

Developing biodegradable smart packaging materials is a key strategy to address plastic pollution. A biodegradable smart pH-responsive film (CGTR) was developed by using the non-covalent synergistic interaction of tannic acid (TA) and riboflavin (RF) in the chitosan/gelatin (CG) matrix. Performance characterization reveals that the TA/RF interaction not only achieves uniform dispersion within the matrix but also significantly enhances the film's overall performance. The film demonstrates complete UV barrier capability, with a free radical scavenging rate increasing by 57.17 % within 20 minutes and reaching 99.11 % after 180 minutes. Additionally, its water vapor barrier, mechanical strength, and thermal stability have been effectively improved. In summary, CGTR film as an eco-friendly smart packaging material shows great potential in food preservation and visual freshness indicator.

One-dimensional V 2 O 5 nanostructures,
with
their anisotropic crystal structure, accessible oxide/electrolyte
interface, and short radial carrier transport distance, are promising
photoelectrode materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) detectors.
However, controllably ordered V 2 O 5 nanowire
bundles have yet to be achieved, and the photoresponse feasibility
of such well-defined one-dimensional architectures requires further
investigation. Herein, we present an alcohol-mediated hydrothermal
approach to engineer directionally organized V 2 O 5 nanowire bundles and subsequently evaluate the self-powered PEC
ultraviolet detection performance of a representative ethanol-derived
sample. Alcohols with carbon chains of different lengths were employed
to regulate the morphology of the V 3 O 7 ·H 2 O precursor, which was subsequently converted into orthorhombic
V 2 O 5 by calcination while largely preserving
its one-dimensional morphology. Among the investigated solvents, ethanol
produced the most uniform and well-organized nanowire bundles, consisting
of highly crystalline individual nanowires with an average diameter
of approximately 61.09 nm. Using this ethanol-derived V 2 O 5 photoanode, a PEC detector was subsequently assembled.
Under 365 nm illumination at zero bias, the device exhibited reproducible
photocurrent switching and a response with nearly linear dependence
on light intensity over the range of 13.2–105.1 mW/cm 2 . Under weak illumination, a maximum responsivity of 4.60 ×
10 –5 A/W and an external quantum efficiency of 0.0157%
were obtained, whereas the photo-to-dark current ratio reached 21.97
at 105.1 mW/cm 2 . Furthermore, the detector exhibited fast
temporal response, with rise and decay times of 43 and 49 ms, respectively.
These results demonstrate that the nanostructure organization induced
by solvents provides a relatively simple route for fabricating V 2 O 5 PEC detectors with fast response and operation
at zero bias. This work highlights the potential of ethanol-derived
V 2 O 5 nanowire bundles for self-powered UV photodetection,
particularly in terms of fast response, zero-bias operation, and high
sensitivity under weak illumination.

Birefringent crystals exhibit significant advantages in the field of polarization modulation due to their intrinsic optical anisotropy. However, the synergistic optimization of bandgap and birefringence remains a pivotal scientific challenge, as both properties are critically dependent on the underlying crystal structure. Herein, a fluorination-guided strategy was employed to design a crystal featuring both large birefringence and deep-ultraviolet transparency. Consequently, a crystal, [CN 4 H 8 ]SiF 6 , was successfully synthesized by incorporating fluorinated [SiF 6 ] 2− octahedron and π-conjugated [CN 4 H 8 ] 2+ moiety, as well as the spatial orientation of [CN 4 H 8 ] 2+ moiety was regulated. As expected, the [CN 4 H 8 ]SiF 6 possesses a wide bandgap of 6.57 eV and a large birefringence of Δ n = 0.062 @ 546 nm. By combining experimental characterization and the first principles calculations, we elucidate that the highly polarizable [CN 4 H 8 ] 2+ cation and the dense hydrogen-bonding networks of [SiF 6 ] 2− anions jointly dictate the optical properties of the material. This work not only identifies [CN 4 H 8 ]SiF 6 as a superior candidate with an optimal trade-off between bandgap and birefringence, but provides a design paradigm for expanding the deep-ultraviolet material through coupling anisotropic organic template with fluoro-inorganic framework.

Shape-changeable inorganic/organic hybrid particles in response to light stimulus have received great interest due to their potential applications in sensors and catalysis. However, the light-induced precise shape transition of hybrid block copolymer/inorganic nanoparticles (BCP/NPs) particles remains a considerable challenge. Herein, the light-responsive hybrid BCP/NPs vesicles are fabricated by introducing PS tethered gold nanoparticles (AuNPs@PS) into polystyrene-o-nitrobenzyl ester-polyethylene oxide (PS- o-NBE -PEO) scaffolds. Upon UV irradiation, the hybrid PS- o-NBE -PEO /NPs vesicles incorporated with smaller AuNPs can transform into hybrid porous spherical particles due to the photocleavage of the o-NBE bond in PS- o-NBE -PEO scaffolds. Besides, attributed to the difference in conformational entropy loss of the BCP/AuNPs co-assembly system, the eventual distribution of AuNPs and the correspondingly shape-converted degree of BCP/NPs assemblies depends on the size of NPs. Furthermore, hybrid BCP/AuNPs and BCP/PtNPs assemblies can be prepared by the in situ reduction of metal precursors in BCP templates. Thus, light-responsive hybrid BCP/NPs particles with various internal structures are generated and the adjustable shape transformation of hybrid BCP/NPs particles is realized by UV stimulus, the obtained results open a unique and promising route to fabricate smart materials.

A growing number of microorganisms are employed in industry nowadays, leading to the extensive generation of microbial waste. Nevertheless, the waste recycling investigation has not yet encompassed the synthesis of nanoparticles. Economically viable nano-selenium (nano-Se) requires additional cost reduction. This study produced cost-effective nano-Se utilizing microbial waste. This reaction was conducted under UV irradiation due to the low activity of microbial waste. After 90 min of UV irradiation, the yield of nano-Se generated from the death-phase eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae ( S. cerevisiae ) waste was 7.46 times more than that of nano-Se produced in darkness. The resultant nano-Se is amorphous, and the nano-Se generated by UV irradiation demostrated a larger size than that produced in darkness. Moreover, unlike the nano-Se generated in darkness or incubators, the nano-Se produced under UV irradiation significantly inhibited the multiplication of MDA-MB-231 cancer cells, demonstrating its enhanced efficacy. The UV-assisted synthesis of nano-Se was also seen during the death phase of the prokaryote Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) waste. After 5 h of UV irradiation, the yield of nano-Se produced by E. coli is 10.80 times more than that produced in darkness. The findings strongly indicate that industrial microbial waste, whether eukaryote or prokaryote, can be employed for the economical production of nano-Se or other nanoparticles.

Microporous ladder polymers (MLPs) represent a beneficial combination of porosities and processability for advanced separation and catalysis. Yet MLPs synthesis is halted by tedious condensation reactions , excessive catalysts and limited choices of monomers . The work reports the first example of room temperature synthesis of MLPs (PAnTB) through photopolymerization of contorted bisanthracene monomers under 365 nm light irradiation , being catalyst-free and atom-economy. PAnTB highlight intrinsically microporous properties (specific surface area : 554 m 2 g −1 ) and efficient photosensitization for the generation of singlet oxygen. This work opens the door to light-induced synthesis of MLPs with enriched monomer structures and functionalities, such as the metal-free degradation of organic contaminants using PAnTB alone under visible-light.

Though cationic waterborne polyurethane (CWPU) has been regarded as an important environmental friendly material, it is hampered by poor water resistance due to incorporation of excessive hydrophilic groups to assure the stability of water dispersion. Here UV-curing in combination with terminal hydrophilicity induced dispersion strategy was employed to prepare water-resistant CWPU from CO 2 -polyol which was an oligoethercarbonate diol from telomerization of propylene oxide and CO 2 . In this system, multiple vinyl ether side chains were incorporated on CWPU backbone using 3-allyloxy-1,2-propanediol as functional chain extender to achieve efficient UV curing, and a small amount of terminal hydrophilicity was designed to ensure the stable dispersion of CWPU. The typical UV-cured CWPU film reached water absorption equilibrium at 72 h, maintaining water absorption rate as low as Ca . 5.8% even immersed in water for 240 h. Moreover, compared with traditional polyester and polyether polyols from petroleum resources, UV-cured CWPU from CO 2 -polyol not only used partially sustainable raw material like CO 2 , but also provided excellent water resistance in corrosive media for a long time (tensile strength retention above 90% for 336 h) due to hydrolysis resistant structure like carbonate and ether units in CO 2 -polyol.

Developing ultraviolet (UV) radiation sensors featuring high sensitivity, ease of operation, and rapid readout is highly desired in diverse fields. However, the strategies to enhance sensitivity of UV detection remain limited particularly for photochromic materials, which show colorimetric response toward UV irradiation. Guided by our initial goal of facilitating easier handling, we formulated a viologen derivative ([H2L]-SC) incorporating hydrogel-based UV sensor which not only inherits the photochromism of [H2L]-SC but also engenders an unprecedented reversible photoelectrochromic response that is absent in either [H2L]-SC or hydrogel alone. Judicious synergy between photochromic [H2L]-SC and polyacrylamide (PAM) converts the colorimetric response of [H2L]-SC into the electrical resistance change of [H2L]-SC@PAM, which amplifies the UV sensitivity of [H2L]-SC by 2 orders of magnitude. Explicitly, the limit of detection (LOD) for UV decreases from 296.3 mJ/cm2 based on the UV–vis absorption spectra of [H2L]-SC to 2.83 mJ/cm2 derived from the resistance variation of [H2L]-SC@PAM. Moreover, linear correlation between the resistance reduction rate of [H2L]-SC@PAM and UV dose rate can be established, rendering it as a dual platform for quantifying both the accumulated UV dose and the instant dose rate. In addition, the proposed strategy based on constructing photoelectrochromic hybrids offers a new pathway to boost the UV sensitivity that could be universal for other photochromic materials.

Inorganic photochromic (PC) materials are gaining increasing recognition as promising candidates for applications in optical storage and information display. However, conventional photochromic materials exhibit sluggish coding rates and a deficiency in intelligent response for writing and erasing under multiple excitation sources. This deficiency contributes to suboptimal readout/decoding efficiency and storage security. Here, we show a Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 :Er 3+ photochromic material with photoluminescence reversible modulation that can fast respond to both ultraviolet light and 532 nm laser within about 1 s, which accompanied by thermal bleaching. The PC mechanism which is based on defect state exchanges between oxygen vacancy defects and color centers is attributed to the structural flexibility of Nb-O systems and oxygen vacancy increased under irradiation. More importantly, it shows differential PC decay behavior in response to X-ray and UV light due to the difference in the number of trapped carriers. Therefore, a simple strategy based on different self-recovery levels induced by double excitation is constructed to develop an encrypted optical memory model. This fast and differential excitation source response behavior hopefully stimulates the development of new encrypted optical memory.
