Na-Sm Bimetallic Regulation and Band Structure Engineering in CaBi2Nb2O9 to Enhance Piezo-photo-catalytic Performance

Qiong Liu,Faqi Zhan,Hang Luo,Xiaogang Luo,Qiuyan Yi,Qiwei Sun,Zhida Xiao,Yan Zhang,Dou Zhang,Chris R. Bowen

The piezoelectric enhancement of photo-catalytic activity for water splitting and pollutant degradation is a novel approach to developing renewable energy and environmental protection applications. Herein, a new form of defect engineered Na-Sm bimetallic-regulated CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 platelet is synthesized via a molten salt process for water splitting and pollutant degradation applications. An intermediate band structure is introduced by Sm-doping, and empty orbitals in the conductive band are introduced by Na-doping. These factors, combined with the increased local charge density around the Sm and Na atoms, result in an increased electrical conductivity, improved electron mobility, and provide additional electrons for enhancing catalytic reactions. As a consequence, the judicious co-doping of CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 with Sm and Na leads to a unique synergetic piezo-photo-electric effect to provide a superior piezo-photo-catalytic performance for H 2 production (158.53 µmol g −1 h −1 ) and pollutant degradation (rate constant, k = 0.257 min −1 ). This new approach provides important insights into the application of defect engineering to exploit the cooperative doping of alkaline earth metals and rare metals to create high-performance catalysts.

Xiaoyan Shi,Weiquan Liang,Guoping Liu,Bin Chen,Lianyi Shao,Yanxue Wu,Zhipeng Sun,Felipe García

The development of new energy-related materials is the pinnacle to attaining a sustainable society based on renewable energy. Over the past decades, plenty of electrode materials have been investigated seeking better energy storage properties. However, the often-tedious synthetic procedures and large amounts of solvents utilised during their syntheses incur high costs and severe environmental pollution. Here we present a solvent-free approach to metal–organic-frameworks/MXene-derived carbonaceous metal selenide/MXene composites with unique nanostructures rich in mesopores and macropores. These species can be readily transformed into high-performance electrode materials with enhanced Li/Na ion storage properties compared with their solution-based counterparts. Herein we report not only a unique metal–organic framework/MXene-derived electrode material displaying high-performance for advanced lithium/sodium storage applications but also its novel environmentally benign production process.

Enhancing the cycling stability of Na-ion batteries by bonding MoS2 on assembled carbon-based materials

Pin Song,Jun Di,Lixing Kang,Manzhang Xu,Bijun Tang,Jun Xiong,Jiewu Cui,Qingsheng Zeng,Jiadong Zhou,Yongmin He,Qundong Fu,Juan Peng,Shasha Guo,Bo Lin,Jingyu Zhang,Peng Meng,Zheng Liu

Room temperature Na-ion batteries (SIBs) show great potential for use as renewable energy storage systems. However, the large-scale application of SIBs has been hindered by the lack of an ideal SIBs anode material. We synthesized MoS 2 on carbonized graphene-chitosan (G-C) using the hydrothermal method. The strong interaction between the MoS 2 and the G-C greatly improved the electron transport rate and maintained the structural stability of the electrode, which lead to both an excellent rate capability and long cycle stability. The G-C monolith was proven to enhance the electrical conductivity of the composites and served as a matrix for uniformly dispersing active MoS 2 nanosheets (NSs), as well as being a buffer material to adapt to changes in volume during the cycle. Serving as an anode material for SIBs, the MoS 2 -G-C electrode showed good cycling stability (527.3 mAh g −1  at 100 mA g −1 after 200 cycles), excellent rate capability, and a long cycle life (439.1 mAh g −1  at 1A g −1 after 200 cycles).

Rational construction of rGO/VO2 nanoflowers as sulfur multifunctional hosts for room temperature Na-S batteries

Wenyan Du,Yuanke Wu,Tingting Yang,Bingshu Guo,Dingyu Liu,Shu-Juan Bao,Maowen Xu

Developing high energy density room-temperature sodium sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries relies on the design of delicate structure that can be efficiently injected sulfur and enhance the cycle life of electrode active material. Herein, a three dimensional (3D) hierarchical cathode substrate with VO 2 nanoflowers as catalyst in situ grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for sulfur cathodes are designed and prepared. In this novel structure, the electronic conductivity of sulfur cathode can be greatly improved due to the high electrical conductivity of rGO substrate. More importantly, the catalytic effect of VO 2 accelerates the conversion long-chain NaPSs to Na 2 S 2 /Na 2 S, and enhances the cycle capability, which can be validated by experimental data. As a result, the as-obtained rGO/VO 2 /S composites achieves an initial reversible capacity of 876.4 mA h g −1 at 0.2C. Moreover, the capacity of 156.1 mA h g −1 is demonstrated after long-cycling term of 1000 cycles at 2C and high cycle stability of only 0.07% capacity decay per cycle is exhibited.

Metal–organic framework-derived hierarchical Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 nanocubes with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for Na–O2 batteries

Yunzhao Liu,Xiaowei Chi,Qi Han,Yuexiu Du,Jiaqi Huang,Xinghao Lin,Yu Liu

The Na–O2 battery system is attracting increasing attention due to its superiority in specific capacity and cost. However, its practical implementation is hindered by many issues, such as high charge–discharge overpotential, limited cycling life, and poor reversibility, all of which result from the mediocre O2 electrode. Herein, to surmount these critical challenges, hierarchical Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 nanocubes (h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns) with a yolk–shell structure are designed for the first time as the novel O2 electrode. h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns are synthesized from a metal–organic framework via a template-assisted method, which is demonstrated to be helpful in creating a high specific surface area of 130.4 m2 g−1, a hierarchical macro- and mesoporous structure, and synergistic yolk-shelled Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 active sites. These unique structural properties endow h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns with remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards both the ORR and OER. The Na–O2 battery based on h-Co3O4@MnCo2O4.5 Ns displays an ultrahigh initial discharge capacity of 8400 mA h g−1, ultralow charge–discharge overpotential of 0.45 V, long cycling life of 135 cycles, and excellent rate capability.

A Nonflammable Na+-Based Dual-Carbon Battery with Low-Cost, High Voltage, and Long Cycle Life

Xiaoyu Jiang,Xingwei Liu,Ziqi Zeng,Lifen Xiao,Xinping Ai,Hanxi Yang,Yuliang Cao

Dual-carbon batteries provide a new perspective on energy storage technology due to their high voltage and low cost. Herein, a novel Na + -based dual-carbon battery (Na + -DCB) is developed based on a nonflammable trimethyl phosphate (TMP) electrolyte with sodium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate)imide salt (NaTFSI). As the molar ratio of NaTFSI/TMP increases to 1:2, the graphite cathode shows a high reversible capacity of 52.9 mAh g −1 , excellent rate capability (21.0 mAh g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 ) and superstability cycling performance (≈100% capacity retention after 750 cycles). In addition, a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film is formed on the surface of hard carbon anode by the preferential reductive decomposition of TFSI − , which suppresses decomposition of TMP. In this case, the Na + -DCB is capable to provide an operation voltage of 4.0 V and excellent electrochemical performance. This work provides new insights for developing new dual-carbon batteries with safety, low cost, and absence of heavy metals.

Is superparelectric 2-dimensional Sn2P2S6 having a “higher dielectric constant” desirable for more real Na+ pseudocapacitance?

Sheng Huang,Chao Meng,Min Xiao,Shan Ren,Shuanjin Wang,Dongmei Han,Luyi Sun,Yuezhong Meng

Pseudocapacitive Na + storage based on the fast absorption/desorption kinetics is a new alternative to realize the high rate capability, which rely on increasing the surface area and creating surface vacancies. This means low Na + capacity because of low dielectric constant for the reported pseudocapacitive Na + storage materials. According to the capacitance formula, we find increasing the dielectric constant is a new path to improve the Na + capacity. This dielectricity (other than surface engineering) based pseudocapacitance can be called more real pseudocapacitance. The superparaelectric 2-dimensional (2D) Sn 2 P 2 S 6 has much higher dielectric constant than the bulk counterpart. The identical polaron direction triggered superparaelectricity and high dielectric constant of 2D Sn 2 P 2 S 6 are well verified. And 2D assembly between the 2D Sn 2 P 2 S 6 and graphene construct the compact network for conductivity of electron and Na + . As results, the 2D Sn 2 P 2 S 6 battery based on more real pseudocapacitance delivers alloy-like capacity and long cycle stability.

Porous MoS2/Carbon Spheres Anchored on 3D Interconnected Multiwall Carbon Nanotube Networks for Ultrafast Na Storage

Biao Chen,Huihui Lu,Jingwen Zhou,Chao Ye,Chunsheng Shi,Naiqin Zhao,Shi-Zhang Qiao

The performance of lithium and sodium-ion batteries is partly determined by the microstructures of the active materials and anodes. Much attention has been paid to the construction of various nanostructured active materials, with emphasis on optimizing the electronic and ionic transport kinetics, and structural stability. However, less attention has been given to the functionalization of electrode microstructure to enhance performance. Therefore, it is significant to study the effect of optimized microstructures of both active materials and electrodes on the performance of batteries. In this work, porous MoS 2 /carbon spheres anchored on 3D interconnected multiwall carbon nanotube networks (MoS 2 /C-MWCNT) are built as sodium-ion battery anodes to synergistically facilitate the sodium-ion storage process. The optimized MoS 2 /C-MWCNT possesses favorable features, namely few-layered, defect-rich, and interlayer-expanded MoS 2 with abundant mesopores/macropores and carbon incorporation. Notably, the presence of 3D MWCNT network plays a critical role to further improve interparticle and intraparticle conductivity, sodium-ion diffusion, and structural stability on the electrode level. As a result, the electrochemical performance of optimized MoS 2 /C-MWCNT is significantly improved. This study suggests that rational design of microstructures on both active material and electrode levels simultaneously might be a useful strategy for designing high performance sodium-ion batteries.

Enhanced activity and stability of Sr2FeMo0.65Ni0.35O6-δ anode for solid oxide fuel cells with Na doping

Tongtong Yao,Nianjun Hou,Juanjuan Gan,Jun Wang,Xiaojing Zhi,Lijun Fan,Tian Gan,Yicheng Zhao,Yongdan Li

Sr 2-x Na x FeMo 0.65 Ni 0.35 O 6-δ is synthesized as an anode material for solid oxide fuel cells. The effects of Na on the crystalline phase and electrical properties are investigated. The main perovskite phase changes into a Ruddlesden-Popper structure after reduction when x is less than 0.1, while the material with a higher amount of Na keeps the perovskite structure. FeNi x alloy nanoparticles are exsolved during reduction, in which the content of Ni increases with the rise of Na amount. The surface oxygen vacancy concentration is also influenced by the doping of Na, and the highest value is reached when x is 0.1. Sr 1.9 Na 0.1 FeMo 0.65 Ni 0.35 O 6-δ anode exhibits the highest activity, and a single cell supported by a 300-μm-thick La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ electrolyte layer shows maximum power densities of 1495 and 627 mW cm −2 at 850 °C with H 2 and wet CH 4 as fuels, respectively. The coking resistance of the anode is also improved with Na doping.

Carbon nanotube wrapped hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks towards superior Na+ storage in the capacitive deionization process

Dongya Ma,Shuzhi Yan,Xinru Xue,Miao Niu,Hongliang Li,Deyu Bao,Chao Zhao,Xiujun Li,Peng Wang,Rong Li,Lei Huang,Miao Yu,Sitong Jia,Yanjiao Wang,Xiao Li,Zhen Zhang,Tie Wang

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) become promising candidates in the capacitive deionization (CDI) technology due to their prominent redox reaction. Herein, the novel CNTs@HOF-DAT composite with the three-dimensional interwoven-network structure is prepared by the facile solvothermal synthesis and applied to the CDI technology for the first time. The synergistic effect between the special structure of HOF-DAT (multiple hydrogen bonds, abundant heteroatoms and π-π interactions) and the high conductivity of CNTs stimulates more redox active sites for the ion storage and accumulation in the CNTs@HOF-DAT composite. This makes the CNTs@HOF-DAT electrode have a high specific capacitance (152.5 F∙g −1 ) and an improved pseudo-capacitance contribution (49 %). Also, the ion removal capacity (16.33 mg∙g −1 ) of the CNTs@HOF-DAT electrode greatly surpasses that of the single HOF-DAT electrode (3.23 mg∙g −1 ) and CNTs electrode (8.77 mg∙g −1 ). Significantly, the desalination mechanism of the CNTs@HOF-DAT composite electrode is explored in terms of the electrode configurating mode and zero-charge potential of the three prepared electrodes, as well as the redox reaction of the HOF-DAT molecules, which manifests that the CNTs@HOF-DAT electrode is suitable as the cathode of the CDI cell.

Thermochemical properties for a series of microporous borophosphates of MI[ZnBP2O8] (MI = Na, K, Rb, Cs)

Pan Liang,Qiu-Yue Kang,Lu Du,Zhi-Hong Liu

Two pure microporous materials, Rb[ZnBP 2 O 8 ] and Cs[ZnBP 2 O 8 ], have been synthesized and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, DTA-TG techniques and chemical analysis. The molar enthalpies of solution of Rb[ZnBP 2 O 8 ] and Cs[ZnBP 2 O 8 ] (s) in 3   mol   ·   dm −3 HCl (aq), of Zn(PO 3 ) 2 (s) in (HCl   +   H 3 BO 3 ) (aq), and of RbCl (s)/CsCl (s) in [Zn(PO 3 ) 2   +   HCl   +   H 3 BO 3 ] (aq) were measured by microcalorimeter at T   =   298.15   K, respectively. With the incorporation of the previously determined enthalpy of solution of H 3 BO 3 (s) in 3   mol   ·   dm −3 HCl (aq), together with the use of the standard molar enthalpies of formation for Zn(PO 3 ) 2 (s), RbCl (s)/CsCl (s), H 3 BO 3 (s), HCl (aq) and H 2 O (l), the standard molar enthalpies of formation of −(3198.5   ±   1.2)   kJ   ·   mol −1 for Rb[ZnBP 2 O 8 ] and −(3212.7   ±   1.2)   kJ   ·   mol −1 for Cs[ZnBP 2 O 8 ] at T   =   298.15   K were obtained on the basis of the appropriate thermochemical cycle. In addition, the molar enthalpy of formation of −(2944.4   ±   1.2)   kJ   ·   mol −1 for [ZnBP 2 O 8 ] − has also been estimated by a group contribution method, which can be used to predict the Δ f H m θ ΔfHmθ of the other similar borophosphates. Moreover, these data have been further used to compare the thermodynamic stability of this series of borophosphates.

Hard Carbon Originated from Polyvinyl Chloride Nanofibers As High-Performance Anode Material for Na-Ion Battery

Ying Bai,Zhen Wang,Chuan Wu,Rui Xu,Feng Wu,Yuanchang Liu,Hui Li,Yu Li,Jun Lu,Khalil Amine

Two types of hard carbon materials were synthesized through direct pyrolysis of commercial polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles and pyrolysis of PVC nanofibers at 600–800 °C, respectively, where the nanofibers were prepared by an electrospinning PVC precursors method. These as-prepared hard carbon samples were used as anode materials for Na-ion batteries. The hard carbon obtained from PVC nanofibers achieved a high reversible capacity of 271 mAh/g and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 69.9%, which were much superior to the one from commercial PVC, namely, a reversible capacity of 206 mAh/g and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 60.9%. In addition, the hard carbon originated from the PVC nanofibers exhibited good cycling stability and rate performance: the initial discharge capacities were 389, 228, 194, 178, 147 mAh/g at the current density of 12, 24, 60, 120, and 240 mA/g, respectively, retaining 211 mAh/g after 150 cycles. Such excellent cycle performance, high reversible capacity, and good rate capability enabled this hard carbon to be a promising candidate as anode material for Na-ion battery application.
