To address the challenge of balancing hardness, toughness, and strength in Ti(C, N)-based cermets, existing research predominantly focused on composition design and sintering optimization, while comparatively less attention was paid to the critical role of initial Ti(C, N) powder characteristics in determining properties. In this study, high-quality Ti(C, N) powders with varying C/N ratios were synthesized via carbothermal reduction-nitridation (CRN) coupled with Ca treatment, followed by the fabrication of Ti(C, N)-20WC-5Mo-5Ni-5Co (wt%) cermets using vacuum pre-sintering assisted spark plasma sintering (SPS). The prepared powders were characterized by the absence of free carbon, low oxygen content, uniform morphology, superior crystallinity, and excellent dispersibility. After sintering, all samples achieved high densification, comprising the (Ti, W, Mo)(C, N) hard phase, (Co, Ni) binder phase, and trace residual WC. The ceramic grains mainly displayed black core-gray rim, black core-rimless, and white core-gray rim structures, characterized by overall thin rims. As the C/N ratio decreased, the dissolution-precipitation process during sintering was inhibited. Accordingly, hardness exhibited an initial decline followed by an increase, whereas the fracture toughness ( K IC ) showed an opposite trend. Transverse rupture strength (TRS) peaked at an intermediate C/N ratio. Cermet derived from Ti(C 0.44 , N 0.56 ) powder achieved an optimal combination of properties, with hardness, K IC , and TRS values of 1867 ± 12 HV 30 , 9.13 ± 0.21 MPa m 1/2 , and 1748 ± 75 MPa, respectively. The synthesized high-quality Ti(C, N) powders provided a crucial foundation for microstructural control and improved overall properties of cermets, and adjusting the C/N ratio served to further optimize the balance among hardness, toughness, and strength.

Titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) attracts wide attention as an effective oxidative catalyst. However, the preparation of TS-1 typically requires rigorous synthesis procedures with a relatively long synthesis time and generates a substantial amount of wastewater. This study discovers that, in the presence of tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH), Si and Ti sources can form a homogenous liquid solution that is highly stable although the two typically undergo hydrolysis at very different rates individually. With such understanding, this work develops a straightforward one-pot synthesis strategy that eliminates the cumbersome procedures aimed at suppressing the hydrolysis of the Ti source in TS-1 synthesis and demonstrates that the crystallization process of TS-1 can be accelerated by reducing the molar ratio of water to Si species ( n (H 2 O/Si)) in the synthesis solution. In propene epoxidation with H 2 O 2 , an excellent catalytic activity is obtained over the TS-1 synthesized at n (H 2 O/Si) = 3.5 and crystallized for only 6 h. This low n (H 2 O/Si) synthesis regime results in a significantly high yield per batch (12 g TS-1/100 mL batch) and, at the same time, produces almost no wastewater. The superior catalytic performance of TS-3.5-6 synthesized is attributed to its high total Ti content and the presence of catalytically active Ti(OSi) 2 (OH) 4 .

A high-entropy oxide strategy was adopted to develop high-performance, low-iridium dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs) for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A novel IrTaWSnCeOₓ coating was fabricated via modified thermal decomposition. Despite an ultralow Ir loading of only 0.4 mg cm −2 , the electrode achieved an overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 60.5 mV dec −1 , while demonstrating stable operation for over 400 h. This performance significantly outperforms conventional IrO₂–Ta₂O₅ anodes. The high-entropy strategy offers an effective approach to developing durable, low-iridium DSAs.

To support green transition of vanadium titanomagnetite blast furnace smelting, various low-carbon blast furnace atmospheres, including oxygen-enriched air injection (CO–N 2 ), oxygen-enriched H 2 -rich air injection (CO–H 2 ), and H 2 -rich air injection (CO–H 2 –N 2 ) were investigated to gain insight on the Ti(C,N) formation mechanisms. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis was first employed to investigate the kinetics of the TiO 2 reaction. Arrhenius-based kinetic modeling revealed that these reactions are primarily controlled by solid-state diffusion, and N 2 directly nitrides titanium oxides to TiN, and the activation energy decreases with increasing N 2 content. In contrast, H 2 lowers the activation energy of the reaction and promotes the reduction of TiO 2 to lower-valence oxides. Then, the carbothermic reduction of TiO 2 -bearing slags was investigated. Chemical composition analysis, XRD, and EPMA-WDS mapping demonstrated pronounced atmosphere-dependent variations in the formation of TiC/N phases. In CO–N 2 atmospheres, Ti(C,N) content decreases with increasing CO content and Ti(C,N) tends to agglomerate. With pure CO, only a few, sparsely dispersed TiC particles were detected. Whereas in CO–H 2 atmospheres, increasing the H 2 concentration markedly enhanced TiC formation, yielding uniformly dispersed particles with slight clustering. Therefore, the overall atmosphere effect on the amount of TiC/N formation follows the order: 100 pct CO < 80 pct CO–20 pct H 2 < 80 pct CO–20 pct N 2 < 60 pct CO–40 pct H 2 < 60 pct CO–40 pct N 2 < 30 pct CO–70 pct N 2 atmosphere (conventional blast furnace atmosphere). An N 2 -sintered Ti 4 O 7 @Ti cathode achieved >74% Hg 2+ removal in 5 h. • The Ti 4 O 7 @Ti cathode showed preliminary reuse performance in 10%H 2 SO 4 . • Ti 3+ /oxygen vacancies facilitate electron transfer and surface ·H formation. •Direct electron transfer dominated Hg 2+ removal, ·H played a secondary role. Highly toxic and bio-accumulative Hg 2+ can be electrochemically reduced to recoverable Hg 0 . However, preserving electrode integrity and corrosion resistance in strongly acidic media remains challenging. Magnéli-phase Ti 4 O 7 -coated electrodes were fabricated on Ti substrates. The optimized Ti 4 O 7 @Ti cathode, prepared by N 2 -protected sintering, preserved Ti 3+ species and oxygen vacancies, exhibiting a low charge-transfer resistance of 24.25 Ω and a high hydrogen evolution over-potential of −0.94 V vs. RHE. Under optimal conditions (3 V, 25 mm electrode spacing, 300 r·min −1 stirring), the cathode achieved >74.0% Hg 2+ removal within 5 h. Mechanistic analysis suggested that direct electron transfer was the primary Hg 2+ reduction pathway, with active hydrogen species as a secondary contributor. Detected Ti 3+ /oxygen vacancies may enhance interfacial electron transfer and surface active hydrogen generation. The electrode retains 68.0% removal after five cycles in 10%H 2 SO 4 . This work provides a stable Ti 4 O 7 -based cathode design for electrochemical Hg 2+ removal in strongly acidic media. Download: Download high-res image (294KB) Download: Download full-size image

BaTiO 3 ceramics were synthesized via a conventional solid-state reaction method to investigate the influence of lattice strain induced by tiny content of Fe 3+ doping (1 mol%) on the structural evolution and ferroelectric properties. The incorporation of Fe 3+ introduces a compressive strain field, resulting in a reduced c / a ratio and a disordered domain configuration. Such lattice strain significantly enhances the maximum ferroelectric polarization ( P max ) from 23.2 μC/cm 2 for undoped BaTiO 3 ceramic to 40.6 μC/cm 2 for BaTi 0.99 Fe 0.01 O 3- δ ceramic. This observed enhancement is attributed to a lowered energy barrier for polarization switching and the facilitation of domain wall motion. Phenomenological analysis based on symmetry-related strain-polarization coupling further reveals that the Fe 3+ induced compressive strain mitigates the lattice mismatch stress at domain boundaries and alleviates the strain constraint on polarization switching. These findings clarify the relationship between chemical-doping-induced lattice strain and ferroelectric performance, offering a pathway for the deliberate control of domain structure to achieve high ferroelectric performance in bulk ceramics.

TiO 2 is a widely studied photocatalyst, but its practical performance is limited by poor light utilization and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a TiO 2 -ZIF-8 heterojunction with a chemically bonded interface was constructed through the formation of Ti-O-Zn interfacial bonds. This design integrates the strong adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 with improved charge separation and transfer across the heterojunction. The optimized TiO 2 -ZIF-8 composite showed markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity, achieving 94.6% degradation of methylene blue within 120 min under simulated solar irradiation. Its apparent rate constant reached k = 0.01508 min -1 , which is 1.55 and 2.38 times higher than those of pristine TiO 2 and ZIF-8, respectively. XPS, FTIR, TEM, and PL results confirm the successful construction of the heterojunction and reveal the key role of Ti-O-Zn bonding in strengthening interfacial interaction and facilitating photogenerated carrier migration. Meanwhile, the strong interfacial interaction improved the structural stability of the composite and helped inhibit nanoparticle agglomeration during photocatalysis. Overall, this work provides new insight into the design of high-performance MOF-based photocatalytic systems through interfacial chemical bond engineering.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials exhibit significant advantages for microwave absorption applications, owing to their high electrical conductivity, structural tunability, and abundant intrinsic defects and heterogeneous interfaces. However, achieving an optimal balance between magnetic and dielectric losses remains challenging for most magnetic metal-based MOFs-derived absorbers. In this study, MIL-125(Ti) was prepared as a template, and TiO 2 @C-x composites were synthesized via a two-step pyrolysis method. Experimental results demonstrate that the pyrolysis temperature significantly affects the graphitization degree of the carbon matrix and the formation of TiO 2 nanoparticles, thereby playing a dominant role in the dielectric and microwave absorption properties of the investigated MIL-125(Ti)-derived core-shell TiO 2 @C composites. Notably, the TiO 2 @C-700 composite delivers an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.2 GHz in 9.2-12.4 GHz at a thickness of 2.01 mm. Therefore, the MIL-125(Ti)-derived TiO 2 @C composites fabricated in this study establish a viable and nonmagnetic strategy for designing tunable, lightweight, and high-performance MOF-derived microwave absorbers.

Dual fs laser structuring creates hierarchical PDMS SERS substrates. • Secondary laser processing increases nanoscale roughness and hotspots. • Detection limitation down to 10 −10 M with high linearity. • Excellent uniformity (RSD 2.57%) and reusability (<4% decay). • Flexible substrate enables adhesive sampling on curved surfaces. Flexible and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are essential for real-world applications such as wearable sensors and on-site molecular detection. We developed two polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based flexible SERS substrates via the replication of femtosecond (fs) laser-nanostructured titanium (Ti) templates: a single-processed Ti-Fs-PDMS substrate and a dual-processed Dual-Fs-PDMS substrate, the latter incorporating an additional fs laser treatment to enrich nanoscale surface features. Gold was thermally deposited onto the structured PDMS to introduce plasmonic enhancement. The dual-structured substrate exhibits higher roughness and hydrophobicity (water contact angle >130°). SERS performance was evaluated using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and malachite green (MG), revealing high sensitivity with a detection limit as low as 10 −10 M for Dual-Fs-PDMS and excellent signal linearity (R 2 > 0.99). Furthermore, the Dual-Fs-PDMS substrate exhibits superior signal uniformity (RSD = 3.203%), reusability, mechanical robustness, and good long-term stability over 180 days, as well as the capability for in situ detection on curved surfaces. Three-dimensional electromagnetic field simulations based on AFM-acquired topography indicated that the Dual-Fs-PDMS substrate exhibits a stronger local electric field and a higher density of “hot spots”, correlating with its enhanced SERS performance. These results highlight the potential of Dual-Fs-PDMS as a flexible and high-performance SERS platform for practical applications. Fe-Mn based layered transition metal oxides are compelling candidates for sodium-ion cathodes owing to their high specific capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, their practical application is hampered by inherent challenges including the Jahn-Teller effect, lattice oxygen loss, transition metal dissolution. In this study, Al/Ti co-doped Na0.67Fe0.4Mn0.4Al0.1Ti0.1O2 (FM-AT) cathode is proposed and prepared. The introduction of Al/Ti, creating strong Al-O and Ti-O bonds, effectively stabilizes the lattice oxygen and elevates the reversibility of anionic redox reactions. Furthermore, the stability of the transition metal layer is effectively enhanced, suppressing transition metal dissolution and the P2-OP4 phase transition associated with TMO2 layer slippage at deep charge states. The FM-AT demonstrates excellent cycling stability, with a capacity of 137.1 mAh g-1 under 20 mA g-1 and a capacity retention of 85.5% after 50 cycles (55.7% for the pristine FM cathode). Even after 200 cycles under 200 mA g-1, a capacity retention of 72.1% is achieved (versus 20.9% for the FM). This work offers a novel method for enhancing the structural stability of iron-manganese based electrode and designing cost-effective, high-performance sodium ion cathodes.

Dopamine is a critical neurotransmitter, and its dysfunction is strongly linked to various neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, depression, and schizophrenia. Current detection techniques exhibit limitations in clinical applications; therefore, developing a method with high sensitivity and rapid response for dopamine detection holds significant importance. In this study, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was synthesized via the solvent method, and a novel electrochemical sensor was constructed by integrating titanium metal–organic framework (Ti-MOF) with PEDOT through an in-situ synthesis strategy. This sensor combines the REDOX properties of Ti-MOF with the high conductivity of PEDOT, demonstrating exceptional sensitivity toward dopamine. The linear detection range spans from 8 to 400 μM, with a detection limit of 3.815 μM. In the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA), the sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity for DA. Repeatability testing reveals that the relative standard deviation of the sample response current is less than 5%, indicating high data consistency. Furthermore, after one month of storage, the senso’s response to DA decreases by only 12%, reflecting excellent reproducibility. Additionally, this study provides an in-depth analysis of the sensor’s REDOX mechanism, offering theoretical support for its optimization and practical application. The successful development of this sensor introduces an innovative, efficient, and highly sensitive approach for dopamine detection, thereby expanding the application scope of Ti-MOF in the field of electrochemical sensing.
