Membrane separation is an important separation and purification technology, membrane materials are the key to membrane separation technology, and the rapid development of two-dimensional materials in recent years has brought new opportunities for membrane separation technology. Graphene oxide (GO) is a hydrophilic two-dimensional material, and its unique physical and chemical structure and properties give it the potential to become a high-performance separation membrane; however, the instability limits its application. In this study, a two-dimensional material, graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4), was integrated into graphene oxide (GO) to address the challenges associated with its practical applications. This modification not only endows the material with more advantageous properties as a membrane but also introduces a heterogeneous structure that bolsters the composite membrane’s stability. This structure also enhances the permeability and selectivity of the membrane, leading to impressive results in self-driven permeation tests and staggered-flow filtration tests under applied pressure. Following additional surface charge modifications, the composite membrane demonstrated a separation efficiency of approximately 90.4% in permeation tests and an impressive separation efficiency of 63.8% in filtration tests for binary mixed salt solutions. These results indicate a significant capability for mono- and divalent ion separation, suggesting promising potential for salt separation applications.

Among various semiconductors evaluated for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, gallium nitride (GaN) has emerged as a promising photoelectrode material due to its wide, direct bandgap, which allows for more efficient sunlight utilization. To address the issue of severe surface states that hinder its performance, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was introduced as a passivation layer. The resulting GaN/g-C3N4 heterojunction demonstrates a significant enhancement in PEC performance compared to pristine GaN nanorods (NRs), including a notable increase in photocurrent density. Importantly, this heterostructure is also capable of driving PEC water splitting under zero external bias, which is primarily attributed to the efficient charge separation and transfer enabled by the Z-scheme mechanism. Overall, this study offers a novel strategy for passivating surface states in nanomaterials and underscores the promising role of g-C3N4 in PEC water splitting applications.

Booming graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalyzed water splitting increases crisis of aquatic contamination. However, a controversial understanding regarding effect of g-C 3 N 4 on growth of microalgae still exists. Accordingly, Chlorella vulgaris were cultured in 0–250 mg/L of g-C 3 N 4 with biomass named as C-0, C-50, C-100, C-150, C-200, and C-250, respectively. g-C 3 N 4 below 200 mg/L was beneficial to short-term cultivation of microalgae, while it was harmful to long-time cultivation. Protein factions of C-0, C-100, and C-250 were 41.4, 42.3, and 36.4 wt%, while their lipid factions varied from 21.5, 16.9, to 17.8 wt%, respectively. In short-term cultivation, superoxide dismutase’s activity of C-0, C-150, and C-250 increased dramatically, while accumulated H 2 O 2 led to increased activity of catalase . However, it started to decrease once antioxidant enzymes were per-oxidized, leading to increase of malondialdehyde content. In long-term cultivation, activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and malondialdehyde content decreased dramatically owning to peroxidation of algae. Scavenger tests with tertiary butanol and triethanolamine implied that·OH was dominate parameter affecting growth of microalgae. This work indicates that g-C 3 N 4 below 200 mg/L is propitious to short-term cultivation of microalgae, while it is bad to long-time cultivation of microalgae, revealing dual rules of g-C 3 N 4 in Chlorella vulgaris cultivation.

The rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and the narrow absorption range of visible light greatly limit the photocatalytic activity of graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Herein, g-C 3 N 4 was jointly modified by carbon dots (CDs) and copolymerization via in situ co-calcining of three precursors (urea, glucose and 2-amino-5-iodo-benzonitrile (I-ABN)), and named as I-ABN x -C 3 N 4 @CDs y . Then, solid-state Z-scheme photocatalysts PC1–PC9 with CDs as the electron mediators were prepared via in situ growth of BiOI on the surface of I-ABN x -C 3 N 4 @CDs y through solvothermal method. The optimal proportion of each component was explored through orthogonal experiments. The existence of CDs act as an electron transport medium to accelerate the transportation rate of photogenerated carriers, improve the light absorption capacity. The copolymerization with I-ABN introduce benzene rings and I − to g-C 3 N 4 , which enhance the light absorption capacity and photoelectric efficiency. The Z-scheme heterojunction effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Therefore, PC1–PC9 presented excellent performance for the degradation of BPA due to the synergistic effects of the above three points. Among them, PC6 showed the best photocatalytic activity, which completely degraded BPA (15 mg/L) within 40 min, and whose rate constant (0.091 min −1 ) was 22.8 times that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 . The active radical trapping experiment determined •O 2 − and h + were the main active radicals. Finally, the BPA degradation mechanism by PC6 was proposed. This study provides new insights for the combination of heterojunction, carbon dots, and copolymerization to rationally design efficient photocatalysts to restore the environment.

High photogenerated carrier recombination inhibits the widespread application of graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Construction of junctions is an effective strategy but still under challenges, such as tedious procedure and limited efficiency. Herein, WO x /1D g-C 3 N 4 /2D g-C 3 N 4 multi-junction with enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers was one-pot integrated through in-situ “PTA-Mel” ionic microenvironment by mixing phosphotungstic acid (PTA) and melamine (Mel). Protonated Mel by PTA contributed to the formation of 1D g-C 3 N 4 and the decomposition of [P(W 3 O 40 ) 4 ] 3- produced WO x . 1D g-C 3 N 4 and WO x with oxygen-vacancy deficient provided channels and caves for photoelectrons transfer, respectively. Compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 , the degradation rate constants of Rh B and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) by WO x /1D g-C 3 N 4 /2D g-C 3 N 4 are 2.34 and 1.45 times high respectively due to the excellent visible light absorption and improved photogenerated carrier separation. This method could be extended to the design of multiple heterojunctions in one photocatalyst through a facile process.

Phosphorus-doped g-C 3 N 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (PCN/ZIS) heterojunction photocatalysts were constructed by solvothermal method . The physical and chemical properties were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), etc. The degradation of antibiotic wastewater was used to investigate the photocatalytic activities of composites under visible-light irradiation. The 10% PCN/ZIS had the best photocatalytic degradation performance for tetracycline with a photodegradation rate of 0.0874 min −1 , which is respectively about 2.9 and 52.0 times than that of pure ZIS and PCN. Meanwhile, it was concluded that the holes and ⋅O 2 – (superoxide radicals) play dominant roles in the photocatalytic reactions through radicals trapping experiments, while ⋅OH (hydroxyl radicals) has a negative effect. In addition, 10%PCN/ZIS, with excellent stability and recyclability, also exhibited high photocatalytic activity for terramycin, chlortetracycline and ofloxacin . Overall, with the enhanced photocatalytic performance, PCN/ZIS could be potentially applied for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic wastewater.

LiBH 4 has been considered as a promising solid electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries. However, the low ionic conductivity at room temperature has been the biggest challenge of LiBH 4 solid-state electrolyte (SSE) toward practical solid-state batteries. In this work, a ternary electrolyte is designed and prepared by milling LiBH 4 with LiNH 2 and interfacially decorated with g-C 3 N 4 . It is revealed that the soft dispersed phase of two-dimensional g-C 3 N 4 can build an effective transportation network in the composite electrolyte, thereby decreasing the interfacial impedance and reducing the energy barrier for lithium ion diffusion. The optimized SSE, LiBH 4 -2LiNH 2 -g-C 3 N 4 -10 % (LBN-CN-10 %), exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.5×10 −3 S cm −1 , five orders of magnitude higher than that of the LiBH 4 electrolyte at 30 °C. The LiIn symmetric cell with LBN-CN-10 % electrolyte delivers a low polarization of ∼89 mV over 10,000 h. When assembling with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 cathode, the all-solid-state battery exhibits excellent cycling over 1000 cycles at 30 ℃, achieving a breakthrough in the lifetime of solid-state batteries with LiBH 4 -based electrolyte. Moreover, the all-solid-state battery with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode also delivers a discharge plateau at 3.0 V, revealing the high voltage withstanding of LBN-CN-10 % electrolyte. This work provides new options for the development and practical application of room-temperature hydride all-solid-state batteries.

To address the catalyst recovery issue in traditional photocatalysis processes, photocatalytic membrane reactors have emerged as a novel technology in recent years. However, the understanding of the differences in photocatalytic performance and mechanism between the membrane and slurry systems is missing. The current study provided a comprehensive comparison between the photocatalytic slurry system (CN-P) and membrane system (CN-M) in terms of bisphenol A (BPA) degradation and mineralization, in which the well-developed g-C 3 N 4 was chosen as the catalyst. The fabrication of CN-M was optimized via tuning initial urea concentration, and a series of characterization technologies confirmed the successful incorporation of g-C 3 N 4 onto the membrane. Different reaction mechanisms were proposed in two systems via the identification of contributed reactive species and the degradation products. The “sea anemone effect” in the membrane system enhanced the mass transfer between the reactive species and the BPA molecules and promoted the BPA mineralization with less toxic intermediates. Furthermore, the CN-M exhibited excellent anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties with a much lower irreversible fouling resistance than the original membrane and could be regenerated rapidly after visible light irradiation. These findings provided new insights for the CN-M system as a promising and reliable alternative to the traditional photocatalytic process, which is of great significance and importance in promoting the practical application of photocatalytic membranes in water treatment.

In this paper, effect of contact interfaces of high-energy TiO 2 , (1 0 1) and (0 0 1) facets, with g-C 3 N 4 on the photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 hybrid was studied using TiO 2 hollow nanobox (TiO 2 -HNB) assembly from high-energy TiO 2 nanosheets (TiO 2 -NS) as model. The prepared photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen sorption , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The photoreactivity of the photocatalyst was evaluated by measure the formation rate of photo-induced hydroxyl radicals ( OH) using coumarin as a probe molecule and photocatalytic degradation of Brilliant Red X3B (an anionic dye) under UV irradiation ( λ = 365 ± 10 nm). It was found that g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 -HNB forms direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system, which shows superior enhancement on the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 than g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 -NS. It is by contacting g-C 3 N 4 with (1 0 1) facets, g-C 3 N 4 can efficient remove the photo-generated electrons accumulated on (1 0 1) facets of high-energy TiO 2 , which results in spatially isolated photo-generated electrons and holes, enhancing the photocatalytic activity.

Phosphorus regulation tunes the electronic environment of g-C 3 N 4 nanotubes. • P-assisted interfacial interaction enhances MoO 3 /PCNNTs charge transport. • MoO 3 /PCNNTs shows reproducible RhB kinetics (0.16706 ± 0.00477 min −1 ). • Post-reuse analyses confirm operational retention and framework preservation. • Combined evidence supports an S-scheme-like working model with ROS generation. Developing efficient photocatalysts with tunable interfacial properties is important for pollutant removal. Here, phosphorus-modified graphitic carbon nitride nanotubes (PCNNTs) were coupled with α-MoO 3 to prepare MoO 3 /PCNNTs heterostructures. CNNTs, PCNNTs, MoO 3 /CNNTs, and MoO 3 /PCNNTs were compared to examine the effects of phosphorus modification and MoO 3 coupling. XPS revealed changes in the P-, Mo-, and O-containing chemical environments after MoO 3 coupling. Among the carbon-nitride-based samples, MoO 3 /PCNNTs showed the largest BET specific surface area (101.2 m 2 g −1 ), the smallest apparent optical band gap (2.72 eV), and the lowest fitted charge-transfer resistance (314.2 Ω). Under white-LED irradiation, the representative apparent pseudo-first-order rate constant of MoO 3 /PCNNTs for RhB removal was 0.1718 min −1 . Five independent experiments gave mean rate constants of 0.1671 ± 0.0048 min −1 for MoO 3 /PCNNTs and 0.1007 ± 0.0057 min −1 for MoO 3 /CNNTs. The composite also showed removal of MB, MO, and TC-HCl with pollutant-dependent responses, and maintained higher RhB removal than MoO 3 /CNNTs over six consecutive reuse cycles. Post-cycling characterization retained the characteristic morphology and bulk structural features, alongside changes in the surface chemical environment. These comparative results associate phosphorus modification and MoO 3 coupling with altered material properties and improved pollutant-removal performance under the tested conditions. Naphthalene, as a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), is persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic, posing a long-term threat to aquatic environments. To address this issue, a mineral-mediated Au-TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst with coupled adsorption and photocatalytic functions was constructed through photodeposition, co-pyrolysis, and subsequent in situ mineral loading/calcination. Characterization analyses demonstrated that 1.0 wt% Au provided the most effective electronic modulation, giving an apparent rate constant of 0.174 min −1 for naphthalene degradation, which was 3.78 times that of the Au-free counterpart. Among the tested mineral supports, bentonite exhibited the strongest adsorption-enrichment effect, increasing the adsorption efficiency to 47.2% and enabling complete removal and near-complete mineralization of naphthalene within 25 min of irradiation. Radical trapping experiments and ESR spectra identified ·OH, ·O 2 − , and h + as the dominant reactive species. Combined with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and in situ Gas Chromatography (GC) analyses, naphthalene was found to undergo progressive hydroxylation, ring opening, and oxidation before final mineralization. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing mineral-semiconductor composite photocatalysts for efficient PAH removal from water.

There is a tremendous demand for noncontact temperature sensing technologies due to their fast response and accurate testing. In this work, Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :Sm 3+ /g-C 3 N 4 mixed phosphors with various compositional ratios were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. Over the temperature range of 313–573 K, the luminescent intensity of g-C 3 N 4 exhibited a decreasing trend. In contrast, the luminescent intensity of Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :Sm 3+ demonstrates an antithermal quenching phenomenon due to the high structural rigidity of Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 . To achieve high temperature sensitivity, Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :0.08Sm 3+ and g-C 3 N 4 were mixed at an optimal 15:1 ratio, leveraging their contrasting thermal responses. The composite exhibits tunable emission, with its color shifting from cyan to orange as the temperature rises. This property enables a dual-mode temperature sensing based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates, achieving maximum relative sensitivities of 1.63% K −1 at 313 K and 0.34% K −1 at 573 K, respectively. Besides, the repeatability of the optimal mixed phosphors reaches 98% across variable temperature cycles. These results indicate that the Ba 3 LaNb 3 O 12 :Sm 3+ /g-C 3 N 4 mixed phosphor exhibits high sensitivity and exceptional repeatability, demonstrating its potential for application in self-calibrated optical thermometry.
