Here, we report an environmentally friendly fabrication strategy of bright yellow fluorescent carbon dots (y-CDs) and construct a rapid and accurate multifunctional sensing platform for the effective detection of temperature and Cu2+. The y-CDs were favorably obtained through a one-step hydrothermal treatment of natural Smilax China for the first time and exhibit long-wavelength emission at 542 nm under an excitation wavelength of 470 nm. Additionally, the obtained y-CDs exhibit superior biocompatibility and distinguished stability under different conditions, and display a respectable fluorescence quantum yield of up to 22.37%. Appealingly, the as-prepared y-CDs were implemented as temperature probes within ranges of 25 °C–40 °C and 45 °C–80 °C. Significantly, based on the static quenching effect, the as-prepared y-CDs were developed as an effective platform for fluorescence sensing of Cu2+, with linear ranges of 0.5 μM–10 μM, 75 μM–225 μM and 250 μM–350 μM, achieving a detection limit of 28 nM. Furthermore, confocal fluorescence imaging of PC12 cells was achieved successfully, which indicated that the as-synthesized y-CDs could visualize Cu2+ fluctuations in living cells.

The magnetic chitosan/sludge biochar composite adsorbent was prepared using chitosan, Fe 3 O 4 , and sludge biochar as raw materials. The composite adsorbent was able to achieve rapid solid–liquid separation under an applied magnetic field. The morphology and microstructure of the composite adsorbent were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, VSM, and BET analysis. The adsorption performance of the composite adsorbent on Cu 2+ was investigated through static adsorption experiments, and the effects of adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of Cu 2+ , initial pH of the solution, and adsorption temperature on the adsorption efficiency of Cu 2+ were discussed. The results showed that chitosan and Fe 3 O 4 were successfully loaded on sludge biochar. When the initial concentration of Cu 2+ was 30 mg/L, the dosage of the magnetic chitosan/sludge biochar composite material was 0.05 g, the adsorption time was 180 min, pH was 5, and the temperature was room temperature, the maximum removal rate of Cu 2+ reached 99.77%, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 55.16 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process was chemisorption with monolayer coverage.

A colorimetric gold nanohexagonals coated silver nanotriangles (AgNTs@AuNHs) nanoprobe has been constructed for the ultrasensitive detection of trace Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , based on the fact that Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ as the catalyzer can selectively enhance the etching rate of AgNTs@AuNHs by S 2 O 3 2− . In the presence of Pb 2+ , the inner AgNTs within the AgNTs@AuNHs undergo complete etching to form the hollow AuNHs, leading to the marked decrease in both absorbance and chrominance at 585 nm. In contrast, Cu 2+ initiates an etching reaction on the AgNTs, subsequently extending to the AuNHs. These transformations give rise to the formation of hollow gold nanotriangles, accompanied by pronounced red-shifts in the absorption peaks of the detection system. The distinct optical responses induced by Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in the AgNTs@AuNHs nanoprobe enable the sensitive and selective detection and quantification of these heavy metal ions. Furthermore, we successfully extracted RGB data from the color changes of AgNTs@AuNHs nanoprobe, enabling a straightforward visual readout for detection of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ . This method yields satisfactory recoveries when applied to the analysis of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in river water, rice, and onion samples, with detection results closely matching those obtained using ICP-MS. These results collectively underscore the practical applicability of the AgNTs@AuNHs nanoprobe.

In this study, we have successfully synthesized a novel coumarin-based dendrons derivative CD and its chemical structure was characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and ESI-HR-MS. The sensor CD showed an obvious “on-off” fluorescence quenching response toward Cu 2+ with a maximum quenching efficiency of 99.8%. The CD -Cu 2+ complex showed an “off-on” fluorescence enhancement response toward PPi over many competitive anions. The detection limit of the sensor CD was 0.29 × 10 −6 M to Cu 2+ and 2.39 × 10 −9 M to PPi. In addition, the sensor CD showed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry to Cu 2+ and the sensor CD -Cu 2+ showed a 2:1 binding stoichiometry to PPi in CH 3 CN/HEPES buffer medium (9:1 v/v, pH = 7.2). The stable pH range of sensor CD to Cu 2+ and CD -Cu 2+ to PPi was from 3 to 8.

A smart low-molecular-mass organic gelator based on naphthalene-pyrazoline has been designed and synthesized. The gelator G can form a thermo reversible stable gel in tert -butanol, cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, and DMSO through self-assembly, it emits blue and yellow-green fluorescence under ultraviolet radiation. Notably, it has multiple stimulus responses of light, heat, shock and ion. In addition, it could act as an efficient fluorescent probe for the selective sensing of Cu 2+ in the solution containing water. The detection limit of Cu 2+ in THF deionized aqueous solution (V:V = 9:1) is 5.65 × 10 −8 M. The complex ratio of G to Cu 2+ is 1:1. In addition, the G has good biocompatibility in living cells.

A novel colorimetric/fluorescent probe (AgNPs-GSH-Rh6G2) was prepared by linking silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with rhodamine 6G derivative (Rh6G2) using glutathione (GSH) as a linker molecule. The prepared probe showed obvious fluorescence change and colorimetric response after adding copper ions. Based on this phenomenon, a colorimetric/fluorescence dual-mode detection method was constructed to recognize copper ions. The linear ranges of fluorescence detection and colorimetric detection were 0.10 to 0.45 mM and 0.15 to 0.65 mM, respectively, and the limit of detection were 0.18 μM and 24.90 μΜ. In addition, the dual-mode probe has achieved satisfactory results in the detection of copper ions in sediment samples. The successful construction of AgNPs-GSH-Rh6G2 not only provide a reliable tool for the detection of copper ions, but also shed light on a new idea for the multi-mode development of the detection platform.

Considering the chemodynamic therapy and chemotherapy independent of external stimulus witnessing great advantage in the clinical translation, developing a smart nanoplatform that can realize enhanced chemo/chemodynamic synergistic therapy in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is of great significance. Herein, we highlight the enhanced pH-responsive chemo/chemodynamic synergistic cancer therapy based on in situ Cu2+ di-chelation. The alcohol-withdrawal drug disulfiram (DSF) and chemotherapeutic drug mitoxantrone (MTO) were embedded into PEGylated mesoporous CuO (denoted as PEG-CuO@DSF@MTO NPs). The acidic TME triggered the collapse of CuO and the concurrent release of Cu2+, DSF, and MTO. Then, the in situ complexation between Cu2+ and DSF, as well as the coordination between Cu2+ and MTO not only prominently enhanced the chemotherapeutic performance but also triggered the chemodynamic therapy. In vivo mouse model experiments demonstrated that the synergistic therapy can remarkably eliminate tumors. This study provides an interesting strategy to design intelligent nanosystems, which could proceed to clinical translations.

In this study, a novel fluorescent sensor, N,N -dimethyl-4-((2-(8-m-ethyl-9-(naphthalen-1-yl)-9H-purin-6-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)aniline( PHA ), which was constructed via Schiff base reaction of purine derivatives and dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. This probe showed significant selective fluorescence quenching of Cu 2+ , and accompanying with an increase in Cu 2+ concentration and a change in solution color from colorless to yellow. The outstanding features of PHA include low detection limit (0.429 μM), strong anti-interference ability and fast response time. We further investigated the chelation mechanism of PHA and Cu 2+ by Job's plot experiment, density generalization theory (DFT), and the probe PHA can form a 1:2 complex with Cu 2+ ions, leading to a fluorescence quenching process, thus realizing the rapid detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, this new fluorescent sensor [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] can be used to detect pesticide residues in solution. When the [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] system was mixed with glyphosate solution, that a fluorescence recovering was observed. This may be because glyphosate chelates more strongly with Cu 2+ ions, making the copper ions dissociated from the [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] system. The detection limit of the fluorescent sensor [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] for glyphosate was 18.77 nM. Finally, the sensor system has been successfully applied in fluorescence imaging of glyphosate in living cells.

Seawater pollution caused by heavy metal ions is a growing concern among the public. Perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) are ideal probes for detecting metal ions due to their exceptional sensing characteristics, including remarkable sensitivity, low detection limit, and good selectivity. However, traditional lead-based PeQDs exhibit drawbacks related to lead toxicity and poor water stability. Herein, lead-free halide PeQDs Cs3Bi2Br9were synthesized using Bi3+instead of Pb2+via the ligand-assisted reprecipitation method. The luminescence performance of the precursor is analyzed with respect to the reaction conditions. The results reveal that the optimal reaction temperature is 80 °C, the ideal octylamine dosage is 35 μL, and the most effective reaction time is 10 min. Photoluminescence spectra of Cs3Bi2Br9are analyzed at various temperatures and demonstrate that fluorescence intensity decreases as temperature increases. The value of the exciton binding energy (Eb) is determined to be 88.6 meV. Cs3Bi2Br9PeQDs synthesized under the optimum reaction conditions are utilized as fluorescent probes to detect copper ions in seawater. Results from experiments demonstrate that the presence of copper ions markedly quenched the photoluminescence of Cs3Bi2Br9owing to the effective transfer of electrons from Cs3Bi2Br9to Cu2+. A strong linear correlation between the degree of quenching and the contents of Cu2+is observed. Cs3Bi2Br9PeQDs demonstrate a sensitivity and detection limit of 1.21 μM−1and 98.3 nM, respectively. Furthermore, this probe exhibits good photostability, water stability, and selectivity for copper ions, thereby indicating its potential for detecting marine heavy metal contaminants.

A novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+-modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of glyphosate pesticides. Compared to conventional instrumental analysis techniques, fluorometric methods have obtained good results in the field of agricultural residue detection. However, most of the fluorescent chemosensors reported still have some limitations, such as long response times, the high limit of detection, and complex synthetic procedures. In this paper, a novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of glyphosate pesticides. The fluorescence of PDOAs can be effectively quenched by Cu2+through the dynamic quenching process, which was confirmed by the time-resolved fluorescence lifetime analysis. In the presence of glyphosate, the fluorescence of the PDOAs-Cu2+system can be effectively recovered due to the higher affinity of glyphosate for Cu2+, and thus released the individual PDOAs. Due to the admirable properties such as high selectivity to glyphosate pesticide, “turn on” fluorescence response, and ultralow detection limit of 1.8 nM, the proposed method has been successfully applied for the determination of glyphosate in environmental water samples. Keywords:pesticide residues;fluorescent probe;polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles;Cu2+ion;static quenching;glyphosate

Cu 2+ is an essential trace element for the organism, but its excess can also cause irreversible damage to the organism. As such, a “Turn-Off” fluorescent probe DPAP for the specific detection of Cu 2+ was successfully constructed. DPAP exhibits large Stokes shift (120 nm), fast reaction speed (1 min), low detection limit (15.2 nM), low toxicity, and good cell permeability. Cu 2+ quenches the fluorescence of DPAP by blocking its intramolecular charge transfer process to achieve the detection of Cu 2+ and has been confirmed by HRMS, 1 H NMR and DFT calculations. Excitingly, the five-cycle detection of Cu 2+ and the successful recovery of trace Cu 2+ in environmental water samples fully demonstrate the potential of DPAP for practical applications. In particular, DPAP can observe the distribution and translocation patterns of exogenous Cu 2+ in HeLa cells and zebrafish in real-time. This research concept has offered important theoretical support for the study of the environmental behavior of heavy metal ions.

As one of the most abundant metal ions, Cu 2+ has turned into a great threat to human health and the natural environment due to its widely utilized in various industries. In this paper, a chitosan-based fluorescent probe CTS-NA-HY for detection and adsorption of Cu 2+ was rationally prepared. CTS-NA-HY exhibited a specific “turn off” fluorescence response to Cu 2+ and the fluorescence color changed from bright yellow to colorless. It possessed satisfactory detection performance to Cu 2+ including good selectivity and anti-interference, low detection limit (29 nM) and wide pH range (4–9). The detection mechanism was confirmed by Job's plot, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-IR and 1 H NMR analysis. Additionally, the probe CTS-NA-HY was capacity of determining Cu 2+ in environmental water and soil samples. Besides, CTS-NA-HY -based hydrogel could also remove Cu 2+ in aqueous solution effectively, which the ability of adsorption was greatly improved compared with original chitosan hydrogel.
