A singlet oxygen dominated process through photocatalysis of CuS-modified MIL-101(Fe) assisted by peroxymonosulfate for efficient water disinfection

Yanni Jiang,Zhongjuan Wang,Jianbo Huang,Feng Yan,Ye Du,Chuanshu He,Yang Liu,Gang Yao,Bo Lai

Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is an effective reactive oxygen species in disinfection due to its long lifetime and sensitivity to bacteria. This study tried to develop a 1 O 2 dominated process for bacterial inactivation by visible light (vis) photocatalysis assisted by PMS. A novel CuS-modified MIL-101(Fe) (CSMF) photocatalyst was synthesized for the first time. Compared with MIL-101(Fe), CuS-modified MIL-101(Fe) enhanced the photocatalytic performance by increasing absorption of visible light, narrowing down the bandgap and promoting photo carrier separation efficiency. 7.5-log Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) could be inactivated by Vis/CSMF/PMS system within 40 min, showing much better performance of 3.5-log E. coli inactivated by Vis/PMS system. The Vis/CSMF/PMS system is applicable in a broad pH range from 3.0 to 9.0, remaining quite steady disinfection efficiency after regenerations of the catalyst. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis demonstrated 1 O 2 was the dominated ROS rather than OH • and SO 4 •− . Three pathways, including photo-generated electrons (e − ) and O 2 dependent pathway, photo-generated holes (h + ) dependent pathway and CSMF enhanced PMS dissociation pathway, were evidenced to responsible for 1 O 2 formation by aeration experiments and specific 1 O 2 fluorescence probe. 1 O 2 in water attacked the bacterial cell membranes first, got inside the cell and up-regulated the level of intracellular ROS, which further led to cell membrane damage and DNA degradation so as to irreversible cell death. In addition, the developed Vis/CSMF/PMS system could also efficiently inactivate gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and fecal coliform bacteria in practical wastewater, suggesting its wide applicability as a promising alternative to conventional disinfection process.

Development of urea modified CuO pellets for elemental mercury adsorption from natural gas with H2S

Jianping Yang,Xingyue Zhou,Wei Zheng,Penglin Zhu,Fanyue Meng,Zequn Yang,Wenqi Qu,Hailong Li

Efficiently removing elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) from natural gas is a serious task to both equipment safety and ecosystem. The granulation of adsorbent powder is required to reduce pressure loss and adsorbent elutriation from a fixed-bed demercuration system. Herein, urea modified CuO (Urea/CuO) pellets were developed for Hg 0 adsorption from natural gas with H 2 S. The characterization results show that the addition of urea accelerated the formation of pore structure and surface oxygen, thus enhancing the Hg 0 adsorption performance of CuO pellets. The Urea/CuO pellets with 20 % urea additive amount exhibited 93 % Hg 0 removal efficiency under the existence of 500 ppm H 2 S and a gaseous hourly space velocity of 1.21 × 10 5  h −1 . H 2 S was essential to in-situ convert Urea/CuO pellets into a highly active Hg 0 adsorbent. With the increase of H 2 S concentration from 0 to 1000 ppm, the Hg 0 removal efficiency was raised from 34 % to 93 %. Urea/CuO pellets performed well for Hg 0 adsorption at 10–50 °C, which was the representative temperature window of natural gas processing. The Hg 0 adsorption capacity and uptake rate of Urea/CuO with 500 ppm H 2 S reached as high as 27.06 mg·g −1 and 2.44 μg·g −1 ·min −1 , which largely exceeded those of commercial activated carbons specialized for Hg 0 adsorption as well as typical granulated Hg 0 adsorbents reported in previous literature. The existence of H 2 S in natural gas in-situ converted CuO into CuS. The S 2 2− on the formed CuS could act as active sites for Hg 0 adsorption, in which gaseous Hg 0 was captured as stable mercury sulfide (HgS). The deactivated adsorbent could be regenerated and reused by thermally decomposing HgS and replenishing the consumed surface oxygen and the sintering surface. With these advantages, the developed Urea/CuO pellets appears to be a promising Hg 0 adsorbent from natural gas with H 2 S.

Interface Engineering Triggered Electron Transfer Channels and Enhanced p–p Orbital Coupling: Boosting CO2 Electroreduction to Formate Over Heterostructured CuS@SnO2

Jiaqi Li,Hainan Wu,Tinghui An,Yuhao Wang,Dong Xiang,Nan Wang,Kedi Cai

Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) has been demonstrated to convert CO 2 to formate in an electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR). However, suboptimal CO 2 activation and insufficient electrical conductivity pose formidable challenges to achieving desirable eCO 2 RR activity. Herein, a heterostructured CuS@SnO 2 catalyst was designed to realize efficient formate production in eCO 2 RR, which delivers a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 94.9% and partial current density of 243.5 mA cm −2 at −1.1 V versus RHE in alkaline conditions, coupled with excellent electrochemical stability. Systematic investigations reveal that CuS acts as an electron reservoir, and the directional electron transfer channels induce interfacial electron deficiency in SnO 2 , stabilizing Sn active sites during long-term eCO 2 RR operation. Furthermore, it confers dual effects for promoting formate conversion at the molecular level, which integrates optimized interface electronic structure and enhanced p–p orbital coupling between the key * OCHO intermediate and SnO 2 interface, rendering the enhanced * OCHO adsorption, decreased CO 2 hydrogenation energy barrier, and improved intrinsic formate activity. Beyond catalytic performance, CuS@SnO 2 was further utilized in a Li-CO 2 battery to enable integrated CO 2 conversion and energy storage functionality. This study provides a strategy to effectively regulate the formate selectivity of eCO 2 RR by heterointerface engineering, and meanwhile bridges rational catalyst design with practical CO 2 conversion technologies.

Construction of a CuS/Ti₃C₂/rGO composite interface with a synergistic catalysis−conduction−protection effect for non−enzymatic glucose sensing

Zhou Siliao,Zhou Wangdong,Zhou Jiahui,Liu Jing,Wei Yan

Developing sensing interfaces that simultaneously integrate catalytic activity, efficient charge transfer, and structural stability remains a major challenge for high-performance non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Herein, a CuS/Ti₃C₂/rGO ternary composite was fabricated through a combination of liquid-phase precipitation and self-assembly. Structural, surface, and electrochemical studies revealed that the enhanced sensing performance originated from the synergistic integration of catalytic CuS, conductive Ti₃C₂, and rGO-assisted structural protection. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited a fast response time of 3.7 s, a wide linear range of 0.01–10.35 mM, and a low detection limit of 3.33 µM (S/ N  = 3). In addition, satisfactory selectivity, stability, repeatability, and reproducibility were achieved. Recoveries of 98.1–105.0% were obtained in commercial oral liquids and fruit juice samples, demonstrating good analytical reliability in complex matrices. These findings indicate that the proposed catalysis-conduction-protection strategy provides an effective design principle for constructing high-performance non-enzymatic glucose sensing interfaces.

Heterojunction of CuS/MnS Employed with Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes in Molecularly Imprinted Sensor for Selective and Sensitive Determination of Trichlorfon Residual

Li Zhang,Qian Zhao,Xinman Tu,Xinjie Yang,Xinding Lv,Shuiying Xiong

The abuse of trichlorfon leading a threat to human health through the food chain, it is great important to establish a selective and sensitive determination method for trichlorfon residual. Herein, a functional molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was constructed using CuS/MnS heterojunction and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). CuS/MnS possesses a highly efficient electron transfer capacity via ion exchange interactions at a given potential, resulting in a favorable signal response. Meanwhile, the signal transmitting efficiency was further promoted by the large specific surface area of MWCNTs. In the preparation of electrochemical sensor, the CuS/MnS was modified on the electrode surface with MWCNTs, and covered by molecularly imprinted layer. The sensor was first incubated into an indicator solution containing potassium ferricyanide, producing a distinct initial signal. Once the target was present, it was identified and captured by the imprinted cavity, which blocked the electron pathway, and the potassium ferricyanide signal subsequently reduced with a measurable level. Under the optimized conditions, the two-stage linear ranges were 1.0–10 and 10–100 nM, with a detection limit of 0.37 nM. In contrast to other complex electrochemical beacons, this work induced heterojunctions and MWCNTs to obtain a satisfactory result via synergistic effect. Furthermore, the recovery rates of 93.70%–105.18% in the real sample assays suggest a prospective application of the proposed sensor in monitoring of pesticide residuals.

A CuS/Ag/Pt@ICG/DOX nanoplatform with cascaded nanozyme catalysis for tumor microenvironment remodeling and synergistic photodynamic/photothermal/chemodynamic therapy

Wen-Qi Zhu,Dong Cheng,Lin-Song Li,Peng-Wei Chen,Bang-Bang Liu,Mei-Xia Zhao

This work introduces the rational design of a hierarchically structured, multi-enzyme integrated therapeutic platform, referred to as HCuS/Ag/Pt/ICG/DOX (CAPID). The platform is constructed by depositing dual-enzyme-active Ag/Pt on copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) to remodel the tumor microenvironment (TME), followed by loading indocyanine green (ICG) as a near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore and doxorubicin (DOX) as a chemotherapeutic payload. The CAPID platform utilizes catalase to decompose H 2 O 2 into oxygen (O 2 ), which synergizes with endogenous H 2 O 2 to initiate a Fenton-like reaction, generating cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH). The redox cycling between Cu 2 + ions and intracellular thiols depletes GSH, amplifying oxidative stress cascades. NIR irradiation achieved 88.9 % tumor inhibition via spatiotemporal tri-therapy (chemo/PDT/PTT) synergy, thereby addressing the limitations of monotherapy through nanoplatform engineering.

Ultra-high payload of doxorubicin and pH-responsive drug release in CuS nanocages for a combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy

Yang Wang,Yun Xiao,Hangyu Zhou,Wei Chen,Ruikang Tang

A novel versatile system combining chemotherapy and photothermal therapy for cancer cells using CuS NCs is reported. CuS NCs were synthesized by a solid–liquid reaction between Cu2O nanocubes and thiourea. While the hollow nanocage can be used to load anticancer drugs for chemotherapy, the CuS can convert NIR light into heat for photothermal therapy. More importantly, CuS NCs display exceptionally high drug loading capacity of DOX with 500 wt% and release of DOX is pH-controllable, which is a spontaneous process under intracellular conditions. Compared with chemotherapy or photothermal therapy alone, the combination of chemotherapy and phototherapy can significantly improve the therapeutic efficacy. This improvement strategy using multifunctional nanomaterials may be particularly useful in biomedical applications.

Dual-modification strategy of Co(II) and g-C3N4 to CuS for efficient colorimetric determination of thioglycolic acid in daily cosmetics

Tu Xinman,Deng Lamei,Ren Boyuan,Xu Zihan,Zhang Li

A conventional colorimetric method based on CuS-catalyzed H 2 O 2 is improved by a dual-modification strategy and employed for thioglycolic acid (TGA) determination. The doping of Co(II) can enhance ion exchange efficiency. Meanwhile, the modification of g-C 3 N 4 can increase specific surface area and decrease unspecific aggregation. The constructed g-C 3 N 4 /Co-CuS nanocomposite exhibited a favorable catalytic feature. A Michaelis constant (K m ) value of 0.02 mM has been achieved, which is 1/160 of those of CuS and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The g-C 3 N 4 /Co-CuS displays a rapid color response in 3 min and resulted in a stable measurable signal within 10 min. In the determination procedure, the sulfhydryl contained in TGA is capable of preventing TMB oxidation via competing the · OH produced by catalysis and caused a color distinction that is related to the TGA amount. The distinctions of absorbance (λ max  = 652 nm) of different concentrations of TGA are recorded. Linearity is obtained in the ranges of 2.5 – 20 µM and 20 – 160 µM, and the LOD is 0.14 µM. In the real sample assays of perm agent and Qianhu lake water, the recoveries were 96.70 – 106.84% and 100.21 – 101.90%, respectively. This demonstrates that the proposed dual-modification strategy for CuS contributes to highly efficient and convenient determination of TGA in daily cosmetics and water analysis. Graphical Abstract

One step synthesis of novel CuS-ZnS/SiO2@n-octadecane nanocapsules with full spectral absorption range and high photothermal conversion efficiency

Lei Liu,Runfeng Li,Min Guo,Linjun Wang,Mei Zhang

In this manuscript, CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 @n-octadecane nanocapsules were prepared by a simple one-step Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ co-deposition method. The results of XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR and XPS show that nanocapsules composed of CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 shell and n-octadecane core material were successfully prepared, and the particles deposited was proved to be composite structure of CuS-ZnS. The solution concentration, reaction temperature and pH value have significant effects on the morphology of the nanocapsules prepared. The appropriate conditions are 0.02 mol/L CuSO 4 , 0.02 mol/L Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 , 60 °C, and no additional pH adjustment. Under the optimum conditions, the melting enthalpy reached 45.11 J/g, and after 100 times of cold and hot cycles, the melting enthalpy of the sample only decreased by 3.2%, showing good thermal stability. The CuS-ZnS composite structure makes CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 nanocapsules exhibit a wider spectrum absorption performance. The absorption effect of CuS-ZnS/SiO 2 nanocapsules to ultraviolet light is significant, compared to the slight reducing of the visible light, while the absorption of near-infrared light is strong. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the samples is significantly improved from 9.7% to 86.6%. Hence, the prepared nanocapsules achieve full spectral absorption, which has a broad application prospect in solar thermal utilization.

Near-infrared-responsive GE11-CuS@Gal nanoparticles as an intelligent drug release system for targeting therapy against oral squamous cell carcinoma

Qinghua Lan,Shuanghu Wang,Zhouming Chen,Junyan Hua,Jieru Hu,Songmei Luo,Yanyan Xu

Galangin (Gal) is a natural plant flavonoid. More and more evidence shows that Gal can achieve anti-tumor effects by regulating various mechanisms. However, its poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and insufficient lesion targeting limit its clinical application. To overcome these shortcomings, we designed and developed a mesoporous nanosystem (GE11-CuS) that actively located the target area and photo-controlled drug release, which promoted the rapid accumulation of drugs in tumor tissues under NIR irradiation, thus achieving positive effects against cancer. In this study, we explored the application of the Gal-loaded nanometer system (GE11-CuS@Gal) in the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) both in vitro and in vivo. The results exhibited that GE11-CuS@Gal had excellent targeting ability and could accumulate efficiently in tumor cells (HSC-3). Meanwhile, the temperature of GE11-CuS@Gal increasing rapidly under NIR illumination damaged the integrity of the carrier and allowed Gal molecules to escape from the pores of the nanoparticles. When the accumulation of Gal in the nidus reached a certain level, the intracellular ROS level could be significantly increased and the antioxidative stress pathway mediated by Nrf2/OH-1 was effectively blocked, to inhibit the growth and migration of tumors. In conclusion, the GE11-CuS improved the antitumor activity of Gal in the body, which laid a foundation for the treatment of OSCC with traditional Chinese medicine ingredients.

CuS@TA-Fe Nanoparticle-Doped Multifunctional Hydrogel with Peroxide-Like Properties and Photothermal Properties for Synergistic Antimicrobial Repair of Infected Wounds

Xiaohu Zhou,Tiantian Chen,Tengda Ma,Lizhao Yan,Haojie Wei,Shuang Liu,Zhiyin Dai,Zhizhong Xie,Jun Deng,Shengxiang Tao,Lihong Fan,Yingying Chu

Bacterial infection is a critical factor in wound healing. Due to the abuse of antibiotics, some pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop a non-antibiotic-dependent multifunctional wound dressing for the treatment of bacteria-infected wounds. In this work, a multifunctional AOCuT hydrogel embedded with CuS@TA-Fe nanoparticles (NPs) through Schiff base reaction between gelatin quaternary ammonium salt – gallic acid (O-Gel-Ga) and sodium dialdehyde alginate (ADA) along with electrostatic interactions with CuS@TA-Fe NPs is prepared. These composite hydrogels possess favorable injectability, rapid shape adaptation, electrical conductivity, photothermal antimicrobial activity, and biocompatibility. Additionally, the doped NPs not only impart fast self-healing properties and excellent adhesion performance to the hydrogels, but also provide excellent peroxide-like properties, enabling them to scavenge free radicals and exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities via photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) effects. In an S. aureus infected wound model, the composite hydrogel effectively reduces the expression level of wound inflammatory factors and accelerates collagen deposition, epithelial tissue, and vascular regeneration, thereby promoting wound healing. This safe and synergistic therapeutic system holds great promise for clinical applications in the treatment of infectious wounds.

Efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate on CuS@MIL-101(Fe) spheres featured with abundant sulfur vacancies for coumarin degradation: Performance and mechanisms

Chan Zhou,Lei Zhu,Lin Deng,Haojie Zhang,Hanxuan Zeng,Zhou Shi

For improving the catalytic activity and recyclability of CuS in Fenton-like reaction processes, novel sulfur vacancies-enriched CuS@MIL-101(Fe) was constructed, characterized, and examined as heterogeneous catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade coumarin (COU). Thanks to the redox pairs of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , Cu + /Cu 2+ , S 2− /S 2 2− /S 0 /sulfate species, copper-iron synergistic effect and sulfur vacancies, the CuS@MIL-101(Fe) realized a complete removal of COU (30 μM) in 10 min with reaction rate constant of 0.577 min −1 , which was 11.1 and 17.0 times of CuS and MIL-101(Fe), respectively. The effect of various experimental conditions (i.e., initial pH, CuS@MIL-101(Fe) dosage, PMS concentration, and background anions) on COU degradation was discussed, and the stability and versatility of CuS@MIL-101(Fe) was studied as well. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy identified • OH and 1 O 2 as the main reactive oxygen species (ROS). Finally, the possible mechanism of higher COU degradation efficiency in the CuS@MIL-101(Fe) activated PMS system and the degradation pathways were also deeply explored. Consequently, this work provided a novel insight into construction of sulfur vacancies-enriched heterogeneous catalysts for efficiently activating PMS for refractory organic pollutants elimination.
