Metallic Cu dendrite modified Ni(OH)2/nanoporous Ni for high-performance non-enzyme glucose sensors

Yi Zhang,Hao Wang,Man Li,Xinhao Sun,Yan Zhang,Zhifeng Wang,Chunling Qin

This work successfully synthesizes a new type of multi-layered flexible hybrid electrode (Cu/Ni(OH) 2 /np-Ni) composing of bimetallic components, hierarchical porous structure and outstanding glucose electrocatalytic performance. The synthesis strategy includes a facile two-step approach, i.e. the Ni(OH) 2 nanolayer in-situ grows on a nanoporous Ni (np-Ni) network (Ni(OH) 2 /np-Ni) via deionized water immersion and then the metallic Cu dendrites are uniformly deposited on Ni(OH) 2 /np-Ni. Moreover, due to the hierarchical porous structure as well as synergetic effect of Ni(OH) 2 and Cu dual electroactive components, the Cu/Ni(OH) 2 /np-Ni hybrid electrode electrodeposited with 1 min delivers wider linear range of 18 mM and higher sensitivity of 1.629 mA mM −1 cm −2 . The electrode possesses excellent interference immunity, reproducibility as well as long-time stability. In addition, the mechanism of electrochemical sensors for detecting glucose under alkaline conditions is briefly introduced. Accordingly, the flexible Cu/Ni(OH) 2 /np-Ni electrode material shows promise for further development as a contender for wearable glucose sensors.

Pioneering phosphorization of Ni nanoparticles on Ni Foam for high efficiency hydrogen production from ammonia borane

Muhammad Tahir Khalil,Yanyan Liu,Pengxiang Zhang,Huanhuan Zhang,Ruofan Shen,Xianji Guo,Xianli Wu,Baojun Li

Transition metal phosphides are increasingly recognized for their durability and resistance to corrosion in catalytic processes. Ni-based phosphide catalyst (Ni-NiP-NC@NF) was synthesized, and experimental results verified the consistent formation of Ni–NiP nanoparticles (NPs) exhibiting a nano-brick-like structure. These Ni–NiP NPs, with an average diameter of 2.5 nm, demonstrated strong electronic interactions between the nickel sites and the incorporated phosphorus (P). The synergistic interaction raises the number of active sites (NiP) and enhances the electronic properties of the metallic nickel (Ni) sites. The optimized catalyst (Ni-NiP-NC@NF) showed remarkable catalytic performance in the hydrolysis of ammonia borane, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate ( r B ) of 1298 mL min −1 g −1 Ni, a turnover frequency (TOF) of 30.5 min −1 , and an apparent activation energy ( E a ) of 36.05 kJ mol −1 . This work provides a promising methodology for the development of transition metal phosphide catalysts aimed at industrial applications in heterogeneous catalysis and sustainable energy technologies.

Effect of Ni on the performance of Ni–Zn-NC catalysts for CO hydrogenation to DME

Chunqiu Zhao,Qiang Chang,Fu Yin,Jing Li,Guowei Niu,Hulin Wang,Dan Liu,Bhekie B. Mamba,Chenghua Zhang,Alex T. Kuvarega

One-step CO hydrogenation to value-added chemicals represents a prominent yet challenging research objective for conventional catalysis processes in chemical industry. Herein, we report a rationally designed Ni-doped Zn-NC catalyst embedded within an N-doped carbon matrix for one-step CO hydrogenation to dimethyl ether (DME), demonstrating superior CO conversion compared to the pristine Zn-NC catalyst (25.9% vs. 20.6%) while both maintaining high DME selectivity (>93%). Structural characterization revealed that Ni atoms existed in a bimetallic coordination environment, which is crucial for the promoting effect of Ni. In contrast, Ni nanoparticles incorporated into Zn-NC (nanoNi–Zn-NC) reduced CO conversion to less than 17% despite retaining high DME selectivity (>92%). Besides, control catalysts containing either Ni-only or Ni/Zn nanoparticles supported on carbon support exhibited limited catalytic activity and mainly produced hydrocarbons. This work provides valuable insights into the active sites of the bimetallic Ni–Zn-NC catalysts and elucidate the structural effects of bimetallic systems for CO conversion to DME. Furthermore, this study offers a feasible framework for optimizing Zn-based bimetallic catalysts.

Ni@SiC composites from Ni-modified PCS-derived (SiC)p with high-efficiency microwave absorption properties

Wang Jianqi,Wang Yang,Chen Zhou,Wang Changyang,Yang Jilong,Yang Jian,Gu Jian,Li Quan

Silicon carbide (SiC) presents significant application prospects in the light of wave-absorbing, attributed to its excellent electrical and physicochemical properties. By utilizing the synergistic loss mechanism, SiC compounding with the magnetic can markedly enhance the absorption efficiency of electromagnetic wave (EMW) which is an important technical mean to optimize the wave-absorbing capabilities. In this paper, polycarbosilane (PCS) was used as a precursor to prepare (SiC) p and Ni@SiC composites were successfully synthesized by chemical plating without palladium activation, in order to explore the lightweight SiC-based wave-absorbing material that exhibits intense absorption and wide bandwidth. It is shown that when the (SiC) p is about 60 μm, the A2-Ni@SiC demonstrates the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −50.27 dB at 8.04 GHz with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.64 GHz at 3.0 mm (from 7.24 to 12.88 GHz). When the particle size of (SiC) p is further refined to about 5 μm, the prepared B2-Ni@SiC shows exceptional wave-absorbing performance achieving the RL min of −66.10 dB at 3.4 mm, along with an EAB of 4.44 GHz (from 5.56 to 10.0 GHz). The enhancement in wave-absorbing is likely due to the increased interfacial polarization at the Ni-(SiC) p interface, as well as the improved matching of the hybridized constituents.

Seed-Induced Directional Growth of Ni-MOF-Derived Ni/NiO Heterogeneous Nanosheets for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Liangbin Xia,Qing Wang,Fang Wang,Yaru Li,Yining Cao,Yongpeng Ren,Ihar Razanau,Kunming Pan

Nickel-based catalysts demonstrate considerable promise for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet attaining both exceptional activity and sustained durability under prolonged operation persists as a critical research challenge. Herein, a directed self-growth strategy is employed to synthesize Ni-MOF nanosheets with a well-ordered morphology on the nickel foam (NF) surface via strong acid etching followed by ligand introduction. The dense Ni2+ layer generated by acid etching, as a seed, promotes strong bonding between the Ni-MOF and the NF substrate, which accelerates electron transport to the active layer and prevents catalyst detachment during long-term operation. Additionally, the Ni/NiO heterostructure obtained via pyrolysis forms an electron transfer channel that optimizes *H and *H2O adsorption on the Ni side while facilitating *OH desorption through its migration to the NiO domain, collectively contributing to improved HER kinetics. In situ Raman spectra reveal the evolution of key intermediates during the HER, corroborating the DFT predictions and highlighting the critical role of interfacial H2O structures in catalytic performance. The obtained S-Ni-MOF/NF-400 catalyst exhibits an ultralow overpotential (20 mV–10 mA cm–2), surpassing commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, long-term stability tests demonstrate significant improvements in durability. This work not only introduces an outstanding Ni-MOF-based catalyst but also presents a novel strategy for designing highly active and stable HER catalysts.

Composition-Tuned Ni–Ce Mixed Oxides with Inverse CeO2/Ni Structure for Enhanced Low-Temperature CO2 Methanation

Yuan Fang,Jundi Liu,Chengxi Zhang,Kande Liu,Ziying Ju,Xuan Meng,Naiwang Liu,Li Shi

This work systematically investigates the effect of Ni/Ce molar ratios (0.3–2.9) on the structure–activity relationship of Ni/Ce mixed oxides for low-temperature CO2 methanation. As the Ni/Ce ratio increased, the rate of CO2 conversion gradually increased. At a GHSV of 12,000 mL·g–1h–1, all catalysts exhibited 100% CH4 selectivity. The best-performing NiCe-2.1 catalyst not only achieved 37.2% CO2 conversion at 200 °C but also maintained above 85% CO2 conversion during the stability test at 250 °C. Characterization (XRD, BET, TEM, H2-TPR/TPD, CO2-TPD, XPS) results revealed that when Ni/Ce <2.1, the catalyst exhibited a conventional Ni/CeO2 structure. The specific surface area gradually decreased with an increasing Ni content. The activity enhancement of Ni/CeO2 structure primarily resulted from the absolute increase in the number of Ni–O–Ce interface sites. When Ni/Ce = 2.1, the catalyst formed an inverse CeO2/Ni structure, which re-exposed the CeO2 surface and significantly restored the specific surface area. TOF analysis confirmed that the interfacial sites in the inverse structure had higher intrinsic activity, thereby further improving the low-temperature activity. When Ni/Ce >2.1, excessive independent NiO phases caused severe nickel agglomeration, inhibiting the formation of additional Ni–O–Ce interfaces. Finally, in situ DRIFTS results revealed that the CO2 methanation on NiCe-2.1 mainly followed the formate pathway (CO2* → HCO3* → HCOO* → CH4).

Mesoporous Ni–C hydrogenation catalysts with ultrafine Ni nanoparticles prepared via a phyllosilicate-assisted hard-templating strategy

Huimin Xie,Wenhui Liu,Linkun Wu,Liping Zhang,Yuxiang Wang,Zaizhe Cheng,Xiucheng Sun,Shuhao Wei,Guojun Lan,Ying Li

Ni-phyllosilicate hard-templating yields sintering-resistant mesoporous Ni–C catalysts. • Achieves high-loading, ultrafine Ni NPs via a confined interfacial layer. • Enhanced SMSI and anti-leaching stability are confirmed by multi-technique analysis. • Superior LA-to-GVL hydrogenation: 99.7% conversion, 99.3% selectivity. • A general design for high-performance non-noble metal-carbon hydrogenation catalysts. Carbon-encapsulated metal catalysts prepared by in-situ carbonization generally suffer from severe metal sintering during high-temperature treatment. Herein, we develop a nickel phyllosilicate-assisted hard-templating strategy to construct mesoporous Ni–C catalysts with ultrafine, high-loading Ni nanoparticles partially embedded in the carbon support. A Ni 3 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4 interfacial layer is pre-formed via ammonia evaporation prior to carbonization, which effectively inhibits Ni sintering and strengthens the metal-support interaction. The embedded structure generates charge-polarized Ni δ+ –Ni δ– sites that promote hydrogen dissociation and spillover, and enable synergistic activation of levulinic acid and H 2 . Under mild conditions (S/C = 50, 160 °C, 1 MPa H 2 ), the optimized Ni–C–p catalyst achieves 99.7% LA conversion and 99.3% γ-valerolactone selectivity within 2 h, with a reaction rate approximately three times that of conventional impregnated Ni/C. This strategy exhibits good universality for designing other non-noble metal-carbon composites toward challenging liquid-phase hydrogenation reactions. Upcycling of Degraded Low-Ni Cathode to Single-Crystalline Ultrahigh-Ni Cathode via Surface-to-Bulk Engineering

Zhan Feiyang,Bian Zongkun,Chen Qingqing,Wu Xi,Zou Qingxin,Yun Ruirui,Zhang Haimin,Zhang Yunxia,Zhao Huijun

The rapid iteration and imminent retiring tide of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) call for the sustainable upcycling of degraded low-Ni cathodes into ultrahigh-Ni cathodes, meanwhile addressing their inherent interfacial and bulk structural instability to meet the ever-increasing pursuit for next-generation LIBs. Herein, an upcycling strategy based on surface-to-bulk engineering is demonstrated to upgrade spent low-Ni cathodes (LiNi 0.33 Co 0.33 Mn 0.33 O 2 , NCM111) into single-crystalline ultrahigh-Ni cathodes (LiNi 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 , NCM90) featuring Hf/B homogeneous bulk doping and Li 2 HfO 3 coating (denoted as U-NCM90HB). Notably, B doping enables to reinforce the stability of the oxygen framework, while Hf doping with its larger ionic radius triggers the “pinning effect” within the layered structure and inhibits planar gliding and cracks. Further, the in situ formed Li 2 HfO 3 coating reduces residual lithium compounds on the surface, facilitates the rapid diffusion of Li + , and alleviates side reactions at the cathode interface. As expected, the upcycled cathode exhibits significantly improved performance as compared to commercial counterparts, sustaining stable cycling with 89.3% retention after 100 cycles at 0.5 C and delivering a high capacity of 174 mAh g –1 at 5 C. The upcycling method presented here can inspire a broad set of engineering potentials for the sustainable and value-added upcycling of spent ternary layered oxide cathodes.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of Co–Ni–S/Ni foam as an electrocatalyst for nitrogen reduction reaction

Juan Wen,Haodong Sun,Qi Zhou,Zaichun Liu,Ting Huang,Xi Chen,Xiaoyan Yang,Qinghong Huang,Yuhui Chen,Yuping Wu

Ammonia as a chemical substance is closely related to our daily life, and its production process has attracted researchers' attention. Due to its high energy consumption and high emission characteristics, the industrial Haber−Bosch process obviously cannot adapt to the sustainable development concept of low-carbon and environmental protection in today's society. The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) technology is a promising method of converting unstable electrical energy into fuel for storage at ambient conditions. Here, a bimetallic catalyst, Co–Ni–S/Ni foam, is reported as an electrocatalyst to realize N 2 reduction. The in-situ growth strategy promotes the effective combination of Co 9 S 8 and Ni 3 S 2 on the Ni foam without any adhesive. The active centers of the bimetallic Co and Ni reasonably regulate the adsorption of various complex intermediates in the N 2 activation process, so that the Co–Ni–S/Ni foam has good N 2 activity. In 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 , the designed electrocatalyst achieved an NH 3 yield of 5.05 × 10 −10  mol s −1  cm −2 at −0.6 V vs. RHE and an optimum Faradaic efficiency of 6.23% with good electrochemical stability and selectivity. Besides, the electrocatalytic sites were also evaluated in conjunction with density functional theory.

Highly selective CO2 electroreduction to CO by the synergy between Ni–N–C and encapsulated Ni nanoparticles

Yidan Sun,Fang Liu,Xuerong Wang,Kangkang Lu,Xiaojing Liu,Yan Huang,Fengjiao Yu,Yuhui Chen

Efficient catalysts are highly desirable for the selective electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Ni single-atom catalysts are known as promising CO2RR catalysts, while Ni NPs are expected to catalyze the competing HER. In this work, we have modified the Ni NPs by encapsulating them into porous Ni–N–C nanosheets (Ni@Ni–N–C), to boost the synergy between Ni NPs and dispersed Ni–N species towards CO2RR. The CO faradaic efficiency (FECO) reached 96.4% at −0.9 V and retained over 90% in a wide potential window. More importantly, FECO values of over 94% have been obtained from −50 to −170 mA cm−2 with a peak FECO of 99% in a flow cell. Our work demonstrates that the surface modification of Ni NPs can inhibit the unexpected HER and activate the surface sites, offering a practical design strategy for CO2RR catalysts.

One pot synthesis of Cu–Ni–S@Ni foam for the simultaneous removal and detection of norfloxacin

Xincheng Jiang,Yanyan An,Yaoyao Huang,Wei Ding,Manli Sun,Hong Li,Huaili Zheng

The residual antibiotics in the environment will pose a threat to the environment and human health. Thus, it is imperative to develop a smart water treatment material to remove and detect antibiotics from aqueous environment simultaneously. In this study, magnetic Cu–Ni–S@Ni foam was synthesized by liquid phase vulcanization method to in-situ load Cu–Ni–S nanostructures on the surface of Ni foam. The novelty of this material is the combination of adsorption-flocculation technology and semi-quantitative detection technology. Batch experiments showed that Cu–Ni–S@Ni foam has a high removal rate of norfloxacin (NOR) (96.92%), wide pH adaptability (pH = 4.0–10.0) and strong ion interference resistance (0.1–100 mmol/L). According to the Langmuir isotherm , the removal capacity can reach 417.4 mg/g at 25 °C, which is much higher than that of other water treatment agents reported in most studies. Characterization analysis indicated that the main removal mechanisms are surface complexation, cation bridging, electrostatic attraction , precipitation and flocculation . Transmission FTIR detection experiments showed that NOR on Cu–Ni–S@Ni foam has easily recognizable FTIR fingerprints; the intensity of characteristic peaks roughly reflects the concentration information of NOR to some extent. This semi-quantitative detection method, requiring simple operation without the fabrication of KBr tablet, has a wide linear range (5–100 mg/L) and a low limit of detection (4.6 mg/L). Therefore, Cu–Ni–S@Ni foam can be used for simultaneous removal and semi-quantitative detection of NOR in wastewater. It has potential application value in wastewater treatment and water quality monitoring.

In-situ generated Ni/Ni3Si to enhance electromagnetic wave absorption properties of Ni/PDCs/biomass ceramic composites

Jie Liu,Chunmiao Liu,Yanchun Tong,Chang Liu,Haibin Sun,Qiangqiang Hu,Shigang Wu,Yujun Zhao,Xue Guo,Yurun Feng

In recent years, electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials derived from biomass materials have been widely concerned because of their light weight and high efficiency. Here, Ni/PDCs/biomass ceramic composites absorbing material was prepared by a simple suspension impregnation-in-situ reduction carbonization process and polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) with peanut shell as the absorbing matrix and NiO doped in polysiloxane as the precursor solution. The synergistic effect of Ni/PDCs could effectively adjust the impedance matching of the composite, and the BET results shown that the prepared Ni/PDCs/biomass ceramic composites had a hierarchical porous structure, which could not only provide a large number of heterogeneous interfaces, but also enhance the interface polarization, dipole polarization and multiple reflection loss of the absorbing material. The sample of NPP-1 possessed good EMW absorbing performance when the content of NiO was 1 % and the filler was 50 %, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) reached − 66.38 dB at 1.74 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was 3.54 GHz (14.46–18 GHz) at 1.45 mm. In this work, the electromagnetic parameters of biomass materials were adjusted by polymer conversion ceramics and metal oxides , which provided another feasible scheme for enhancing the absorbing properties of biomass materials.
