Pressureless solid-state sintering of SiC ceramics prepared by material extrusion 3D printing

Chenxi GAO,Jian CHEN,Changcong HUANG,Shengjun LIAO,Lan PENG,Zhengren HUANG

In this study, high-strength dense silicon carbide ceramics were successfully prepared via material extrusion 3D printing in combination with pressureless solid-state sintering, in which a polyethylene/wax synergistic binder system was applied to material extrusion 3D printing. Samples of different binder components were prepared by adjusting the ratios of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and paraffin wax (PW). Owing to the good synergy between HDPE/LDPE and PW, a uniform polymer skeleton network was formed in the HL21P sample, demonstrating the best rheological properties and printing quality. After sintering, the HL21P sample possessed the highest density of 3.06 g/cm 3 and the lowest open porosity of 0.4%, along with an optimal flexural strength of 397±29 MPa and elastic modulus of 345±29 GPa. Additionally, the optimal composition HL21P sample still possesses a flexural strength of 382 MPa after sintering at 1700°C. This research addresses the high-temperature failure of SiC ceramics fabricated via the prevalent reaction sintering method in the field of 3D-printed SiC ceramics, attributed to the presence of free silicon. It also demonstrates the importance of polyethylene and paraffin synergy in forming a polymeric skeletal network, enabling the production of SiC ceramics through 3D printing and pressureless sintering.

Investigation of coke deposition during catalytic cracking of different biomass model tar: Effect of microwave

Jian Li,Liguo Jiao,Zhiyu Li,Beibei Yan,Guanyi Chen,Sarwaich Ahmed

Tar is one of the biggest obstacles for commercial application of biomass gasification. Microwave catalytic cracking shows potential for not only removal but also conversion of tar. However, the coke formation under microwave has not been investigated. In the present work, a microwave applicable catalyst, Ni-Ce@SiC, was prepared. The effects of temperature and inlet tar concentration on toluene and phenol conversions were investigated under both microwave and conventional heating conditions, and the influences on coking rate were also focused. Results showed that increasing temperature and reducing inlet tar concentration improved tar conversion. Inlet tar concentration and cracking of phenol typically caused more coke deposition. Based on the characterizations of the spent catalysts, the microwave could eliminate the coke deposition and alter the coke types. The mechanism of microwave on the coke suppression was revealed. This study provids an in-depth understanding of the coke formation during the microwave process, and also builds foundation for the design and operation of catalytic process.

Synthesis of a meltable polyzirconosilane precursor for SiZrNC multinary ceramics

Qiang Gao,Cheng Han,Xiaozhou Wang,Yingde Wang

Polymeric precursors with refractory metal in the main chain while still possess meltable/soluble characteristics are highly desired for ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). Herein, we proposed a stepwise synthesis of polyzirconosilane (PZCS) with Zr-C-Si-N polymeric chain. The reaction mechanism was discussed based on the frontier molecular orbital theory and atom transfer radical polymerization , which was initiated and propagated by a low oxidation state active specie of Cp 2 Zr(II). The PZCS precursor has excellent soluble and meltable properties with a softening point of 80.8 ~ 89.2  o C, which could be spun into green fibers by melt spinning technique. The ceramization process of PZCS was studied, and the resulted SiZrNC multinary ceramics were composed of ZrC/SiC nanocrystals embedded by graphitized carbon phase. The excellent mouldable properties, oxygen-free compositions and high Zr content of PZCS make it an ideal precursor for the preparation of UHTCs matrixes and fibers.

Influence of anodization parameters on electrochemical friction and wear behavior of 4H-SiC wafers

Jiawen Yao,Jingkuang Wen,Liyuan Yin,Hanxiao Li,Yongtian Lu,Chufeng Sun,Zhehan Li,Hang Zhang,Jisheng Pan

This paper systematically investigates the effects of anodic oxidation parameters on the electrochemical tribological behavior of 4H-SiC wafers. Material removal characteristics are quantitatively characterized via coefficient of friction (COF) curves, wear morphologies, and wear areas. Results show that the electric field significantly reduces COF and enhances material removal rate. Increasing voltage alters silicon carbide (SiC) surface oxidation characteristics, triggering abrupt COF changes. Silica abrasives reduce wear on Si 3 N 4 grinding balls, further lowering the average COF while increasing its fluctuations. The material removal efficiency of 150 nm and 100 nm SiO 2 abrasives increases by 17.5 times and 7.9 times, respectively, compared to the abrasive-free condition.

Improving the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of Cf/SiC composites through post–processing strategies

Xiangming Li,Jia'nan Liu,WeiXue Bai,Wanjun Yu,Qinghong Meng,Junting Liu

Simultaneously achieving high electromagnetic wave absorption and excellent mechanical properties in composites with a carbon fibre–reinforced SiC matrix remains a pivotal challenge for advanced aerospace applications. This study presents a dual–modification post–processing strategy that combines a periodic wedge–shaped surface structure with a SiO 2 –B 2 O 3 –Li 2 O–SiC absorbing coating. The engineered surface structure reduced the mean reflection loss ( RL ) from –(0.12–0.14) to –(1.88–1.92) dB by deflecting incident waves, and the absorbing coating further reduced the RL to –(4.92–5.01) dB owing to impedance matching and dipole attenuation. The prepared composites exhibited good electromagnetic wave absorption performance at 800 °C, with a mean RL of –(6.49–7.07) dB. Furthermore, interfacial stress analysis showed that the wedge structures redistributed the tensile stress into higher shear stress and lower positive stress, which increased the bond strength from 3.1 to 7.4–7.9 MPa. This post–processing approach successfully addresses the competing requirements of broadband electromagnetic stealth, high temperature resistance, and high load–bearing capacity, and thereby establishes new design principles for multifunctional ceramic matrix composites in extreme operational environments.

Fabrication of high-loading Fe3O4-decorated concave SiC composite fibers for electromagnetic wave absorption

Liu Yuhao,Zhang Junjie,Liu Hongli,Cai Yani,Chu Peng,Guo Lei,Ma Yongshuai,Yan Jifeng,Guo Xiang,Zhao Weixu

Microwave absorption materials play a vital role in electromagnetic compatibility applications, where electromagnetic coupling between dielectric and magnetic components is crucial. However, in most reported systems, the magnetic loss capability is generally weaker than dielectric loss. To address this issue and achieve ultra-high loading of magnetic particles, concave SiC fibers were designed and fabricated via electrospinning, providing abundant active sites and enhanced surface curvature for effective deposition of magnetic components.Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were in situ grown on SiC fibers via a hydrothermal method to prepare lightweight Fe 3 O 4 /SiC composite fiber microwave absorbers. Systematic investigations reveal that an appropriate Fe 3 O 4 loading uniformly covers the fiber surface, forming abundant heterointerfaces and enhancing dielectric and magnetic loss.Query A high Fe 3 O 4 loading of up to 90 wt% was successfully achieved in the composite system. The Fe 3 O 4 -1:2 sample achieves a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of−40.62 dB at 6.95 GHz with a 4.0 mm thickness, effectively absorbing over 99.99% of incident electromagnetic waves and exhibiting a wide absorption bandwidth. These results indicate that the synergistic dielectric–magnetic loss and multi-interface polarization mechanisms significantly improve electromagnetic wave absorption, providing a promising strategy for designing lightweight, high-performance ceramic-based absorbers.

Pressure-Induced Flow Fabrication of Anisotropic Thermally Conductive and Insulating CF@SiC/HDPE Composites

Ya Wu,Lei Zheng,Mingliang Wang,Xuhuang Chen

Mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers (MPCFs) are promising thermally conductive fillers but suffer from high electrical conductivity and significant interfacial thermal resistance. We propose a dual strategy combining interfacial covalent bonding with pressure-induced flow (PIF) orientation to overcome these limitations. A core-satellite hybrid filler (CF@SiC) was synthesized by covalently grafting SiC onto oxidized MPCFs using a silane molecular bridge, aiming to enhance interfacial phonon transport while insulating the conductive core. Processed into HDPE composites via PIF, the hybrids exhibited high alignment, yielding significant thermal anisotropy. At a 30 wt% loading, the composite achieved a high in-plane thermal conductivity of 6.83 W·m −1 K −1 . Crucially, the composite maintained an outstanding volume resistivity of 1.81 × 10 15 Ω, outperforming the percolated control composite by five orders of magnitude. This work effectively resolves the conductor-insulator paradox, offering a versatile strategy for developing directionally thermally conductive yet electrically insulating polymer composites.

Realistic structure-guided C@SiC opacifiers for mechanically robust and super-insulating silica aerogels

Qihao Dai,Chunlei Sun,Yuzhao Miao,Zhe Wu,Rui Yang,Qiaoling Si,Guihua Tang

Real-structure DDA guides optimization of C@SiC infrared opacifiers. • C@SiC enables superior mid-IR extinction and carbon core oxidation resistance. • Multiple interfaces promote stress transfer and suppress solid conduction. • CGSA withstands >6000× its own weight and retains 90.82% modulus after 50 cycles. • CGSA achieves a super-low thermal conductivity of 26.2 mW m −1  K −1 at 600 °C in air. Driven by the increasing demand for high-temperature energy systems, the development of robust thermal insulation materials capable of maintaining structural integrity and suppressing radiative heat transfer remains highly challenging. Silica aerogels, as representative lightweight super-insulators, suffer from intrinsic brittleness and pronounced thermal degradation caused by pore coarsening and enhanced infrared radiation at elevated temperatures. Here, we report a multi-scale structural engineering strategy to construct C@SiC core-shell particle-reinforced glass fiber/silica composite aerogels (CGSAs). Guided by realistic structural modeling, C@SiC particles maintain outstanding stability under service conditions and act as robust oxygen diffusion barriers and precise mid-infrared opacifiers. Furthermore, the abundant particle-aerogel-fiber interfaces promote efficient stress transfer and energy dissipation under severe thermal-mechanical coupling. Consequently, the CGSA exhibits exceptional mechanical robustness, supporting over 6000 times its weight (112 kPa at 15% strain) with 90.82% modulus retention after 50 fatigue cycles. It also delivers an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.0262 W m −1  K −1 at 600 °C in air, representing a 30.3% reduction compared to the glass fiber/silica composite aerogel. This multi-scale design provides a promising strategy to address the inherent performance limitations of silica aerogels and facilitates the development of highly durable thermal insulators for medium- and high-temperature applications.

Amino-functionalized SiC electrodes for highly sensitive simultaneous detection of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Hg2+

Xin Wang,Linlin Zhou,Xin-Mei Hou

Anthropogenic and industrial activities release toxic and non-biodegradable heavy metal ions (HMIs) into the environment, posing severe ecological risks even at trace concentrations and necessitating their critical detection. Voltammetry has been widely adopted as a mainstream analytical technique for this purpose, driving the demand for low-cost electrode materials that offer high sensitivity, low detection limits, and excellent stability. Low-dimensional silicon carbide (SiC) materials hold great promise for electrochemical applications owing to their abundant active sites, large specific surface area, facile surface functionalization, and exceptional robustness in harsh environments including extreme temperatures, strong acids, and strong alkalis. Despite these advantages, studies on the application of low-dimensional SiC materials for HMIs detection remain limited. In this work, we successfully synthesized modified SiC nanosheets and nanowires for the simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+. The as-prepared SiC-based electrodes exhibited lower detection limits and enhanced sensitivity compared to conventional electrodes. Moreover, they demonstrated excellent stability and reproducibility, underscoring their considerable potential for practical electrochemical sensing applications.

Texturing of W-SiC composites via through-mask electrochemical machining for enhanced tribological performance

Chenhao Zhao,Shihuai Yang,Sen Su,Lili Xiao,Yonggang Guo,Yi Sun,Kejia Kang

Tungsten (W), as a typical refractory metal, had been widely applied in the aerospace, nuclear industry and other extreme working conditions. Particle-reinforced W-based composites, such as W-SiC composites, exhibit higher hardness and superior wear resistance. Additionally, surface texturing can alter the contact state of friction interfaces, thereby reducing friction and wear. This study investigated the texturing of W-SiC composites via through-mask electrochemical machining (TMECM) and evaluated their tribological behavior. TMECM enables the fabrication of large-scale micro-dimple arrays with spacings ranging from 1.5 to 3 mm. These micro-dimples have an average diameter of 763–796 μm and an average depth of 31–88 μm. Increasing the spacing leads to larger dimensions due to a more intensive electrical field. Some micro-dimples feature an uneven bottom due to the Si enrichment in local regions. Compared to the raw sample, the textured W-SiC samples exhibit a lower average friction coefficient (AFC). Under both dry sliding friction and oil lubrication conditions, denser texture arrays with a 1.5 mm spacing reduce the AFC and wear volume. Under dry sliding friction, the texture arrays could trap the abrasive particles and mitigate the interface wear caused by particle rolling. Under oil lubrication, the textures act as reservoirs to release the lubricant and enhance the hydrodynamic effect to support the friction pair with a greater hydrodynamic force. Thus, surface texturing endows W-SiC composites with improved wear resistance and friction reduction.

Fabrication and mechanical properties of diamond/SiC composites via gel-casting and Si infiltration

Wanli Zhu,Ge Zhang,Wei Zhang,Wei Li,Binyu Wang,Congcong Cui,Conghui Guo,Guohui Pan,Jianxun Bao

The fabrication of complex-shaped diamond/SiC composites with high solid loadings remains a formidable challenge. This study introduces a gel-casting combined with silicon infiltration strategy that overcomes this hurdle through precise colloidal design and rheological control of aqueous diamond/SiC suspensions. The synergistic electrostatic stabilization yielded a zeta potential of −75 mV, enabling high-solid-loading (65 vol%) slurries with optimal casting behavior. The resulting composites exhibited excellent mechanical properties, with flexural strength and elastic modulus reaching 420.2 MPa and 578.6 GPa, respectively. These values corresponded to 84.5% and 34.0% enhancements over a reference reaction-bonded silicon carbide (RB-SiC) composite at identical overall solid loading. This leap is underpinned by a significant fracture mechanism transition to transgranular diamond cleavage, consistent with strong interfacial bonding. This work establishes a practical route for manufacturing high-performance diamond/SiC composites.

Homogenous seamless joint of SiC ceramics driven by mechanically constrained expansion-induced stress (MCES)

Xishi Wu,Liu Zehua,Pei Bingbing,Han Jianshen,Liu Huan,Yang Yitian,Wu Haibo,Zhengren Huang

In this work, the internal stress induced by the self-thermal expansion of the ceramic matrix was utilized, instead of external pressure, to drive the densification of the ceramic joint. The theoretical results indicate that a large axial compressive stress (on the GPa order) is generated at the joint interface under constrained expansion. The microstructure and joining performance of the homogeneous interlayer under constrained expansion-induced stress were investigated via experiments, and the joining mechanism driven by this stress was explored. Under constrained conditions, the induced compressive stress facilitates the diffusion of Si-C and mass transfer processes, which results in the formation of a fully dense interlayer. The joining process comprises two stages: internal stress-driven interlayer densification and epitaxial grain growth at the joining interface. The joint strength reaches 359 ± 39 MPa, with a Weibull modulus of 10.9. The proposed technique was successfully adopted for joining Al 2 O 3 ceramics, indicating its broad applicability.
