Facile Preparation of Water-Dispersible Graphene Sheets Stabilized by Carboxylated Oligoanilines and Their Anticorrosion Coatings

Lin Gu,Shuan Liu,Haichao Zhao,Haibin Yu

Dispersion of graphene in solvents is of crucial importance toward its practical applications. In this study, using a water-soluble carboxylated aniline trimer derivative (CAT–) as a stabilizer, the commercial graphene can be stably dispersed in water at high concentration (>1 mg/mL) via strong π–π interaction that was proved by Raman and UV–vis spectra. Moreover, the CAT–-functionalized graphene sheets (G-CAT– hybrid) exhibited high conductivity (∼1.5 S/cm), good electroactivity and improved electrochemical stability. The addition of well-dispersed graphene into waterborne epoxy system (G-CAT–/epoxy) remarkably improved corrosion protection compared with pure waterborne epoxy coating, based on a series of electrochemical measurements performed under 3.5% NaCl solution. This significantly enhanced anticorrosion performance is mainly due to the improved water barrier properties derived from highly dispersed graphene nanosheets in the epoxy coating.

A smart composite coating incorporated with MXene/mesoporous silica nanocontainer for enhanced anti-friction/wear properties

Han Yan,Leifeng Shi,Guanzhang Liu,Lin Zhang

Excellent wear resistance is essential for coatings with anti-corrosion and self-warning functions. However, current smart coatings often fail through external friction damage. Adjusting the micro-nano structure of fillers is beneficial to the realization of synergistic effects. Here, mesoporous silica nanocontainers are in-situ loaded on MXene sheets (MSN-load-MX), and then incorporated into an epoxy coating (MSN-load-MX@EP). The experimental approaches include corrosion electrochemical testing, scratch testing, reciprocating sliding friction test, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, providing a comprehensive assessment of the protection performance. Based on the experimental analysis and MD results, MSN-load-MX can enhance the interaction strength between resin molecular chains, and perfect the coating structure, thus showing the effective defect warning and physical barrier effects. After 4 weeks of immersion, the |Z| 0.01Hz value of MSN-load-MX@EP is two orders of magnitude higher than Pure EP and 66.81 % higher than MSN/MX@EP, indicating good corrosion resistance. Besides, MSN-load-MX@EP exhibits a stable friction coefficient that is lower than those of Pure EP and MSN/MX@EP, and its wear rate is decreased by 41.59 %. MXene-based lubrication film can be smoothly generated on the friction interface and isolates the direct contact between the two friction pairs, leading to the decrease in the friction intensity and shear stress. Finally, MSN-load-MX@EP not only maintains good corrosion protection performance, but also shows excellent anti-friction and wear resistance. This work advances the wear resistance of the smart anti-corrosive coating and expands the potential applications of MXene/mesoporous silica composite epoxy coating in harsh environments.

A novel siloxene@MoS2 heterostructure for improving the wear and corrosion resistance performance of epoxy coatings

Chao Zhang,Yi He,Shihong Zhang,Changhua Li,Rui Gou,Jing Zhang,Dan Sun

Siloxene (Sic) flakes are two-dimensional silicon-based materials that have been extensively investigated in the domains of batteries, supercapacitors , and electrocatalysis , with essentially no research in the domain of corrosion and wear resistance performance of metal coatings . In this study, Sic sheets were prepared through topological chemical exfoliation and applied to epoxy (EP) resin systems for the first time. The effects of Sic sheets on the corrosion and wear resistance performance of the composite coatings were explored. To improve the enhancement effect of Sic on the tribological properties and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), which exerts a self-lubricating effect and an enhanced interfacial effect, was grown on the surface of Sic using a hydrothermal method . The corrosion resistance and tribological properties of the prepared composite coatings were characterized through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , polarization curve analysis, and friction and wear tests. The results indicated that the composite coating containing 0.75 wt% siloxene@MoS 2 (Sic@MS) has the best corrosion resistance and tribological properties. Compared with the pure EP coating, the wear rate of the Sic@MS coating with the aforementioned concentration was reduced by 67 %. Furthermore, the impedance module value at 0.01 Hz was increased by three orders of magnitude and the corrosion current density was reduced by three orders of magnitude after 60 days of immersion in NaCl solution. The above results provide a new idea for the application of Sic materials.

Epoxy-functionalized Ti3C2 nanosheet for epoxy coatings with prominent anticorrosion performance

Xiaomeng Li,Shuxue Zhou

The application of MXene in anticorrosion coatings has attracted recent research interest. Limited information exists on the effect of MXene functionalization on anticorrosion performance. In this work, epoxy-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets (E-Ti 3 C 2 ) were prepared by grafting with (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane and incorporated into solvent-borne epoxy coatings with low mass fractions of 0.3 wt%, 0.5 wt% and 0.7 wt%. The anticorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and salt spray tests. The highest impedance was achieved for the 0.5 wt% E-Ti 3 C 2 coating, at nearly three orders of magnitude higher than a pure epoxy coating. In contrast, the coating with unmodified Ti 3 C 2 yielded an impedance improvement of approximately one order of magnitude. Salt spray tests manifested the same anticorrosion results. The enhanced anticorrosion improvement by epoxy-functionalization should result from the better dispersibility and chemical bonding between the E-Ti 3 C 2 and matrix. The mechanical properties and adhesion force of the coatings were also evaluated. A better scratch resistance, higher adhesion force and reduced flexibility resulted after E-Ti 3 C 2 incorporation.

Robust icephobic epoxy coating using maleic anhydride as a crosslinking agent

Jian Lv,Chenxi Zhu,Haonan Qiu,Jing Zhang,Changdong Gu,Jie Feng

In severely cold regions, it is very difficult to prevent the formation of ice on solid surfaces, even on superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces. Compared with anti-icing surfaces, icephobic surfaces are more useful in practice. In this work, a traditional epoxy coating was modified by using maleic anhydride (MAH) as a crosslinking agent, in addition to filling a small amount of epoxy resin grafted with fluorine containing chains (FEP). The wettability and the mechanical properties of the modified coating, as well as the adhesive strength of ice on the coating surface and the stability of the icephobic properties of the coating, were systematically studied. The results showed that the modified coating surface became more hydrophobic and the force required to remove ice from the surface was less than that needed for removing on the unmodified coating surface. Furthermore, the modified coating has excellent mechanical properties. After sanding with abrasive paper, the unmodified coating surface is more hydrophilic, whereas the modified coating surface retains its hydrophobicity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that compared with crosslinking by traditional polyamides, crosslinking using MAH greatly reduces the number of polar groups on the coating surface. The FEP introduction further reduces the free energy of the coating surface. As a result, the modified epoxy coating exhibits excellent icephobic performance. This study will be helpful for the design of icephobic epoxy coatings for use in practical applications. For example, it may make the de-icing on the underside of trains running in cold regions becomes more easily.

Recyclable and Self-Repairable Epoxy Anticorrosion Coatings with Curing-Controlled Thermoplasticity

Ting Shen,Hongxi Zeng,Zhiwei Chen,Shu-Rui Zhao,Hao-Cheng Yang,Weihua Li

Affordable self-repairing coatings with robust interfacial adhesion are of great interest in anticorrosion applications. Epoxy (EP) coating is the most widely used commercial anticorrosion coating but suffers from failure once damaged because it cannot be repaired facilely as a thermosetting material. Herein, we develop a thermoreversible epoxy by regulating the curing program within a partial curing window of a commercial epoxy–anhydride system. The as-prepared coatings experience a reversible solid–liquid transition during the heating–cooling cycle. The curing windows for thermoplastic and thermosetting epoxy are investigated as well as the underlying curing mechanism. The photothermal coatings were fabricated by embedding carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) within the epoxy coating, enabling in situ repairing by the near-infrared laser irradiation. Such coatings show moderate surface adhesion to metal surfaces, impressive recycling and repairing abilities, and competitive corrosion resistance.

Ti3C2Tx@polyaniline/epoxy coating based on cathodic electrophoretic deposition with effective corrosion inhibition effect for corrosion protection on P110 steel

Changhua Li,Yong Li,Qilong Chen,Dan Sun,Hongjie Li,Wen Chen,Jing Yan,Guiyang Wu,Xi Yuan,Sha Wang,Yi He,Hao Yu

Polyaniline-coated Ti 3 C 2 Tx particles (TPi) endowed the electrophoretic deposited epoxy coating with efficient physical shielding and corrosion inhibition capacities to improve the corrosion protection ability. Ti 3 C 2 Tx of few/single layers was prepared and TPi particles were synthesized by in-situ polymerization of polyaniline on Ti 3 C 2 Tx surface. Characterization results indicated the successful synthesis of TPi material. TPi/epoxy coating was prepared on P110 steel sheet through cathodic electrophoretic deposition method, and the protection ability was tested by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and saline immersion test. EIS results of the complete coating showed that impedance modulus at low frequency (0.01 Hz) of TP7 coating was 3.92 × 10 8  Ω cm 2 after soaking for 20 d, which was higher than 2.82 × 10 6  Ω cm 2 of neat epoxy coating (NEP), indicating better protection performance. The results of impedance spectrum of scratched coating showed that TP7 coating had obvious corrosion inhibition effect, which was attributed to the passivation effect of polyaniline to promote the conversion of loose corrosion products into dense layers. This research provided a new approach to apply Ti 3 C 2 Tx into the electrophoretic deposited epoxy coating with corrosion inhibition effect.

Research of mesoporous silica loaded lignin to enhance the anti-corrosion and anti-weathering performance of epoxy surface

Xinya Lou,Huamin Liu,Peiyan Li,Jicai Liang,Ce Liang

A new type of filler was added to epoxy resin to prepare a composite coating with excellent corrosion and weathering resistance. The simple synthesis process and nonpolluting raw materials of this filler contribute to the development of green chemistry. Specifically, lignin was encapsulated in mesoporous silica, the synergistic effect between the two resulted in the formation of lignin/mesoporous silica composite particles (MSN-L) with excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance. Moreover, MSN-L was incorporated into the epoxy coating to form an excellent barrier against the penetration of corrosive media. The coating was characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), contact angle analysis (WCA), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and other testing methods. The results show that the epoxy coating doped with 2 wt% MSN-L exhibits good corrosion resistance and excellent surface stability before and after the accelerated aging experiments. The impedance value of the coating was 10 6  Ω•cm 2 and the corrosion current was 10 −4  mA/cm 2 . After UV aging, the surface roughness was 71.3 % lower and the degree of reduction in the water contact angle was reduced by 61.2 % compared to the blank coating. This corrosion and weather-resistant coating significantly extends the service life of outdoor coatings and provides effective protection for metals used outdoors.

Eco-friendly design of active montmorillonite nanofillers for reinforcing the anti-corrosion property of epoxy coating

Xianliang Li,Yawei Shao,Yanqiu Wang,Junyi Wang

In this work, a montmorillonite (MMT)-based composite coating with long-term corrosion protection for mild steel was prepared. This composite coating incorporated the montmorillonite@polydopamine@cerium phytate (MMT@PDA@PACe) nanofiller, prepared by the easily layer-by-layer surface assembly method. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and surface morphology studies showed that the prepared composite coating exhibited long-term protective performance, self-healing performance, and good integrity. In this instance, on the one hand, two-dimensional (2D) MMT could block the path of corrosive media penetrating the coating. Also, organic modification of PDA and PACe could enhance the dispersibility and compatibility of inorganic MMT fillers, thus enhancing the coating barrier effect. On the other hand, composite materials could perceive corrosion reactions and actively release corrosion inhibitors to improve corrosion resistance performance further. The coating's self-healing performance and release characteristics of corrosion inhibitors were investigated by the EIS and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) tests. Moreover, after 60 d immersion, the |Z| 0.01 Hz value of the 0.5 wt% MMT@PDA@PACe composite coating was over 10 9  Ω·cm 2 , which is 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the bare coating. Simultaneously, the adhesive force studies were applied to the composite coatings, and the results illustrated that the coating had the highest dry conditions adhesion force with 5.43 MPa and the lowest adhesion force loss rate at 14.1 % after 30 d of immersion.

Biomimetic anti-icing epoxy coating based on controlled-secreting hydrophobic small molecules in microcapsules through shrinkable gel under low temperature

Xin-Yu Wang,Sai Wang,Jun-Feng Su,Rong-Yue Shao,Qin-Yu Xing

The design of anti-icing structures is challenging for epoxy coatings, which are widely used in aircraft, wind power generation equipment, and outdoor buildings. Inspired by the principle that bird feathers are not easily frozen, a smart biomimetic anti-icing epoxy coating based on controlled-secreting hydrophobic small molecules in microcapsules was designed in this work. The remarkable feature of these microcapsules is that they can secreting small molecule oil at low temperature, but the release rate is very low at room temperature controlled by restriction of gel in the microcapsules' shell. Optical and SEM morphology showed that microcapsules were globe-shaped particles with compacted shells. FT-IR results indicated that the core material of glycerol trioctanoate was well protected by the shell skeleton of cross-linked methylated melamine-formaldehyde (HMMM) resin. Gelatin was filled in the microporous structure of the shell skeleton structure. AFM results showed that the gel material shrank at low temperatures, producing tiny holes in the shell material. The temperature sensitivity of gelatin was the valve for core release. The controlled-secreting property of microcapsules under various temperatures was measured using high-oil absorbent paper. Pore microstructure appeared on the shell of microcapsules after an alcohol delusion of the gel process. It was found that the secreting rate of the core material from the microcapsule was faster at low temperatures (-10∼ 20 °C) because of the shrinkage of gel material in the skeleton structure. SEM results also indicated that the microcapsules were dispersed homogeneously in the epoxy coating without any accumulation phenomenon. Moreover, the interface between microcapsules and epoxy resin was stable, and no interface separation debonding appeared even under the temperature of −20–40 °C. Surface hydrophobicity tests indicated that the epoxy coating with 3.0 wt% microcapsules had the largest water contact angle of 95°. The core material-secreting traces were observed, which confirmed that the hydrophobic small molecules migrated to the surface of the epoxy coating. Ice shear force values proved that more additive microcapsules provided more hydrophobic small molecules' secreting capacity to the coating's surface under a low temperature of −15 °C. This anti-icing function was sustainable and stable under violent temperature-change cycling, ensuring the coating material had a longer anti-icing service life.

Ziyang Zhou,Zhengquan Wang,Ranming Niu,Siyu Huang,Julie M. Cairney,Xueling Fan,Eason Yi-Sheng Chen

Rust conversion and composite coatings offer effective solutions for enhancing corrosion resistance in structural materials used in marine environments. They are both cost-effective and easy to implement. In this study, we introduce a novel coating that combines tannic acid-based iron-rust conversion with graphene-based nanocomposites, resulting in improved corrosion resistance for epoxy coatings on steel surfaces. We employed a variety of characterization techniques to assess the superior anti-corrosion and structural properties of these new coatings, including X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with focused ion beam and energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, as well as mechanical testing. The development of the new materials holds promise for environmental benefits and widespread industrial applications of nanocomposites in the field of rust conversion coatings.

Facile construction of hydrophobically modified epoxy coatings with excellent anti-corrosion, abrasion resistance and self-cleaning performances

Haoxiang Chen,Feifei Su,Zhonghe Wang,Congxiang Li,Zhihong Fan,Dongfang Zhang,Guoqiang Liu,Huaiyin Chen

Superhydrophobic coatings show great application prospect in various fields such as corrosion protection, anti-icing, waterproof and oil-water separation, due to their unique properties. However, the poor mechanical stability and the preparation complexity severely limit their practical application. In this study, superhydrophobic epoxy coatings with excellent mechanical stability were facilely constructed based on fluoridation modification of amine curing agent and TiO 2 nanoparticles. Epoxy curing agent, diethyltriamine, was fluorinated by the reaction with heptafluorobutyric acid to obtain the required low surface energy. Meanwhile, fluorinated TiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared through the reaction with 1 H,1 H,2 H,2H-perfluorooctanetriethoxysilane and further used for generating the roughness. The properties of the coatings were adjusted by the addition amount ratio of TiO 2 nanoparticles to epoxy resin. The performance tests of water wetting, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance of the coatings were carried out. The results show that the hydrophobicity of epoxy coating is greatly improved after fluoridation modification of amine curing agent, and the greater the amount ratio fluorinated TiO 2 nanoparticles to epoxy resin, the higher hydrophobicity of the modified coating. The modified coating prepared under optimal conditions displays excellent abrasion resistance, self-cleaning and anti-corrosion performances. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution reveal that the hydrophobically modified epoxy coating has the largest charge transfer resistance, which is 8 orders of magnitude larger than that of uncoated Q235 steel. This work provides a simple method for preparation of superhydrophobic epoxy coatings with excellent mechanical stability, and will enlighten researchers to develop more superhydrophobic coatings and their applications.
