The high-entropy oxide (HEO) concept expands the design space of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode materials . There is great potential for the development of HEO cathode materials that has not been fully explored, and the relationship between their chemical composition, grain size, and electrochemical performance is not yet fully understood. This experimental design involved the preparation of single-phase perovskite (Sr 0.2 Ba 0.2 Bi 0.2 La 0.2 Pr 0.2 )FeO 3 HEO SOFC cathode materials, and we systematically studied the effects of synthesis temperature and microstructure on their electrochemical performance. The results show that as the synthesis temperature increases, structural transformations from multiphase to single-phase perovskite HEO can be observed. It exhibits excellent conductivity and electrochemical performance (the minimum polarization resistance reaches 0.033 Ω∙cm 2 , and the maximum power density is 664 mW∙cm −2 ). The single-phase perovskite HEO sample exhibits higher electrochemical performances compared to those of multiphase perovskite. Furthermore, it exhibits outstanding ability to suppress Sr segregation, chemical compatibility with Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 1.9 (SDC), and CO 2 tolerance performance. The Distribution of relaxation time(DRT) analysis shows that as the synthesis temperature (1000–1150 ℃) increase, HEO single-phase formed and the oxygen atom reduction ability of the SBBLP samples was improved; and the adsorption of gas oxygen on the electrode surface is limited with porosity decreases. The work shows it is interesting and valuable to optimize the performance of SOFC cathode materials using a high entropy design.

As a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode material , Pr 2 NiO 4+δ (PNO) is a critical challenge for SOFC commercialization due to the lack of oxygen vacancies and insufficient redox reaction (ORR) activity. In this paper, various concentrations of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 CoO 3-δ (LSC) nanoparticles are coated on the surface of PNO by an impregnation method, and the ORR kinetics of PNO is found to be improved by constructing a composite cathode with heterointerfaces. The formation of the heterointerface effectively enhances the transfer of interstitial oxygen in the PNO and the oxygen vacancies in LSC, which can promote the conduction of O 2− in the cathode and thus improves the ORR activity of the material. When the impregnation concentration of LSC reached C LSC = 0.2 mol L −1 , the ORR activity can reach the highest level. At 700 °C, the area-specific resistance of PNO-LSC reaches 0.024 Ω cm 2 , which is 83.4% lower than that of PNO (0.145 Ω cm 2 ). And the peak power density of PNO-LSC reaches 0.618 W cm −2 , which is 1.89 times larger than that of PNO (0.327 W cm −2 ). Therefore, the construction of composite cathodes with heterointerfaces via impregnation provides an alternative strategy for enhancing the ORR activity of the cathode materials in SOFC.

N-type organic compounds present themselves as promising high-capacity cathodes for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. However, a common challenge is their working voltages often falling below 1 V versus Zn 2+ /Zn. To bridge this gap, a high-voltage organic material is first developed, 5,6,11,12-tetraazanaphthacene (TANC), using a heteroatomic substitution strategy. TANC feature a large π-conjugated plane enriched with π−π interactions, which not only enhancing structural stability but also boosting charge transfer kinetics. The TANC cathode is achieved from its dihydro precursor, denoted as 2H-TANC, via a facile in situ activation process within the battery itself. This electrochemical synthesis method is cost-effective and environmentally friendly compared to traditional chemical method. The cathode shows a record-high discharge voltage of 1.15 V (vs Zn 2+ /Zn) among n-type organic materials and maintains cycling stability over 47,500 cycles. Furthermore, spent TANC electrodes can be efficiently recycled via a simple extraction process. The work marks a significant step toward the development of high-voltage, affordable, and recyclable organic electrode materials, steering them to the forefront of future sustainable battery technologies.

Organic cathode materials with redox-active sites and flexible structure are promising for developing aqueous zinc ion batteries with high capacity and large output power. However, the energy storage of most organic hosts relies on the coordination/incoordination reaction between Zn 2+ /H + and a single functional group, which result in inferior capacity, low discharge platform, and structural instability. Here, the lead is taken in in situ electrodepositing stable poly(1,5-naphthalenediamine, 1,5-NAPD) as interlayer and excellent conductive poly(para-aminophenol, pAP) skin onto nanoporous carbon in sequence for the structural optimization of organic/organic cathodes, designated as C@multi-layer polymer. In situ analyses, electrochemical measurements, and theoretical calculation prove that both CO and CN active groups can act as a strong electron donor as well as Zn 2+ host during the discharging process. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the double organic layers, C@multi-layer polymer delivers high capacity, long lifespan, and excellent capacity reservation even at large discharge current and commercial mass loading (>10 mg cm −2 ). Introducing multiredox centers into one organic composites will provide new insights into designing advanced Zn–organic batteries.

Replacing the ceramic support of a conventional solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with a metal support is an active research trend for improving the robustness of SOFC. We report metal-supported SOFC (M-SOFC) prepared based on Ni–Fe alloy supports with different Ni to Fe atomic ratios. The results show a Ni to Fe atomic ratio of 7:3 ratio has a more homogeneous and balanced microstructure and mechanical strength. Besides metal support selection, the type of cathode also plays a key role on improving the performance of a M-SOFC. In this study, we choose SSC and SDC as cathode materials and prepare composite cathodes containing different weight ratios of SSC to SDC, i.e., 3:7, 5:5, and 7:3 with a cathode sintering temperature of 950 and 1050 °C are compared as well. The combination of a Ni to Fe atomic ratio of 7:3, a SSC to SDC weight ratio of 5:5, and a cathode sintering temperature of 1050 °C yields the highest performance. The SSC-SDC55 cathode on symmetrical cell test shows a very low polarization resistance of 0.035 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C. A tested single-cell consisting layers of Ni–Fe|NiO-YSZ|YSZ|GDC|SSC- SDC achieved a maximum power density of 1.4 W cm −2 at 800 °C, reaching one of the highest performances for Ni–Fe supported M-SOFC, proving the advantages of using Ni–Fe alloy as support for M-SOFC. The stability of our Ni–Fe alloy supported M-SOFC still needs improvement.

Potassium-ion batteries are a compelling technology for large scale energy storage due to their low-cost and good rate performance. However, the development of potassium-ion batteries remains in its infancy, mainly hindered by the lack of suitable cathode materials. Here we show that a previously known frustrated magnet, KFeC 2 O 4 F, could serve as a stable cathode for potassium ion storage, delivering a discharge capacity of ~112 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 and 94% capacity retention after 2000 cycles. The unprecedented cycling stability is attributed to the rigid framework and the presence of three channels that allow for minimized volume fluctuation when Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox reaction occurs. Further, pairing this KFeC 2 O 4 F cathode with a soft carbon anode yields a potassium-ion full cell with an energy density of ~235 Wh kg −1 , impressive rate performance and negligible capacity decay within 200 cycles. This work sheds light on the development of low-cost and high-performance K-based energy storage devices.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) as highly effective energy conversation devices have gained substantial recognition and research interest. The electrochemical properties of the traditional SOFCs are restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics for the cathode material when lowering the operation temperature to below 600°C. In addition, the stability of the cathode at reduced temperatures is also a big challenge for the widely popularization of SOFC technology. Achieving high activities and stable ORR in the cathode is crucial for the development of SOFCs. The doping active metal method has been demonstrated as an effective approach to optimize the phase structure and improve the ORR activity of the cathode. Herein, we successfully develop an Ir-doped SrCoO 3 − δ (SrCo 0.98 Ir 0.02 O 3 − δ , SCI) cathode for SOFCs. SCI exhibits a low area-specific resistance (ASR) of 0.057 Ω cm 2 at 650°C, ~ 44% lower than 0.102 Ω cm 2 of Ir-free SrCoO 3 − δ . The Ni–Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 1.90 (SDC) anode-supported fuel cell with SDC electrolyte and SCI cathode obtains an excellent output performance (e.g., 1,128 mW cm −2 at 650°C). The desired results underscore the feasibility of the Ir-doping strategy as an optimized method for the exploitation of advancing cathode in SOFCs.

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stands out as a highly promising energy conversion device, which can convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy. However, the decline in catalytic activity of the cathode becomes a major challenge for the commercialization of SOFC. Here, based on Pr0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (PSCF), two novel A-site high-entropy perovskite cathodes, (Pr0.2Sr0.2La0.2Ba0.2Ca0.2)Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (PSLBCCF) and (Pr0.2Sr0.2La0.2Ba0.2Nd0.2)Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (PSLBNCF), are reported as high-catalyst-activity cathodes for SOFC. The synergistic action of high-entropy elements causes the valence state changes of the A-site Pr element and B-site Co–Fe element, which weakens the bonding energy of the metal element with O. It regulates the adsorption of surface oxygen and the dissociation of lattice oxygen, which enhances the transport of oxygen ions and greatly improves the oxygen reduction reaction and catalytic activity of the cathode. The polarization resistance (Rp) values of PSLBCCF and PSLBNCF cathodes at 750 °C are 0.083 and 0.072 Ω cm2, respectively, which are significantly lower than that of PSCF (0.122 Ω cm2). At 800 °C, the single cell supported by La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3−δ as the electrolyte and high-entropy PSLBNCF as the cathode exhibited a power density of 561.09 mW cm–2. This study provides a new strategy for achieving excellent catalytic activity cathodes for SOFC.

Magnesium metal has a high theoretical volume capacity and abundant reserves. Magnesium ion battery is theoretically secure and eco-friendly. In recent years, magnesium ion battery has attracted wide attention and is expected to become a competitive energy storage candidate in the next generation. However, due to the large polarization effect and slow migration kinetics of magnesium ions, magnesium ions are hard to insert/desert in cathode materials, resulting in a poor cycle and rate performance. CoHCF, a typical Prussian blue analog, has an open frame structure and double REDOX sites, and it is regarded as a candidate for rechargeable ion battery. Herein, a Ni-doping method was utilized to improve the performance of CoHCF. Compared with the original CoHCF, the maximum specific discharge capacity of the Ni-doped CoHCF at 50 mA/g charging and discharging current increased from 70 mAh/g to 89 mAh/g, and the cyclic performance and rate performance improved. These improvements result from the fact that the electrode reaction process of Ni-doped CoHCF changes from diffusion-driven to reaction-driven. The Ni-doped CoHCF is more stable, and the lattice changes during Mg2+(de-)intercalation are smaller. This study can provide a reference for the development of Prussian blue analogs as cathode materials for magnesium ion batteries.

The development of cathode materials with both high structural stability and superior specific capacity is crucial for advancing aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Manganese trioxide (Mn 2 O 3 ) has shown promise as a cathode material; however, its practical application is hindered by poor structural integrity and severe Mn dissolution during cycling, resulting in subpar electrochemical performance. To address these challenges, a fluorine (F) doping strategy was employed to enhance the stability of Mn 2 O 3 . F-doped Mn 2 O 3 (FMO) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method followed by high-temperature calcination. The effects of F-doping concentration on the material's structure and electrochemical behavior were systematically studied. The results reveal that F − partially substitutes lattice O 2− , increasing bond energy and reinforcing the [MnO 6 ] framework. This modification effectively reduces electrochemical polarization, enhances reaction kinetics, and improves charge/discharge reversibility. As a result, the Zn//FMO battery delivers an excellent specific capacity of 485.9 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and maintains 125.9 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . The findings demonstrate that F-doping is an effective strategy to overcome the intrinsic limitations of Mn 2 O 3 , offering a promising route toward high-performance AZIB cathodes.

A series of cathode materials of Pr 2-x Sr x NiO 4 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1, 1.5) are synthesized by the EDTA-citric acid route. The results show that the Pr 1.7 Sr 0.3 NiO 4 , Pr 1.5 Sr 0.5 NiO 4 , Pr 1.3 Sr 0.7 NiO 4 and PrSrNiO 4 exhibit excellent structural stability and carbon dioxide resistance, and also exhibit good chemical compatibility and thermal matching with the SDC electrolyte. It is also found that the Sr doping is beneficial in improving the high temperature conductivity of Pr 2-x Sr x NiO 4 . At 800 °C, the electrical conductivity of Pr 1.5 Sr 0.5 NiO 4 and Pr 1.3 Sr 0.7 NiO 4 reaches 185 S cm −1 and 317 S cm −1 , respectively. In addition, the area-specific resistance (ASR) value increases significantly with Sr doping, which reduces the catalytic activity of the material. Acceptable ASR values are obtained for Pr 1.5 Sr 0.5 NiO 4 and Pr 1.3 Sr 0.7 NiO 4 , with ASR values of 0.079 Ω cm 2 and 0.082 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C, respectively. Additionally, the most interesting result is the ASR value obtained after high-temperature thermal decomposition of Pr 2 NiO 4 , where Pr 2 NiO 4 * (decomposed) has the lowest ASR value of only 0.027 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C, showing the best catalytic activity. The maximum power densities of Pr 2-x Sr x NiO 4 (x = 0.5 and 0.7) and Pr 2 NiO 4 * are found to be 515, 430, and 548 mW cm −2 at 800 °C, respectively. These results show that when the Sr doping amount is less than 1.5, the stability of the Pr 2-x Sr x NiO 4 cathode material can be effectively improved, but its catalytic performance is partially sacrificed.

Organosulfides are a class of promising cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. In order to overcome their disadvantages of solubility and low mass density, we prepare benzene-1,2-dithiolato complexes with metal ions (Sn 4+ and Cu 2+ ) by a facile method, which are designated as Sn-(BDT) 2 and Cu-BDT, respectively. The synthesized compounds are colored solids and insoluble in liquid ether electrolyte. Their mass densities are about 2.0 mg cm −3 , which are much higher than that (1.2 mg cm −3 ) of the starting material 1,2-benzenedithiol. When evaluated in Li half cells, Sn-(BDT) 2 delivers a capacity of 221.2 mAh g −1 rendering a volumetric energy density of 973.2 Wh L −1 . Cu-BDT can deliver a capacity of 234.2 mAh g −1 and its volumetric energy density is 1044.5 Wh L −1 . Both volumetric capacities and energy densities are higher than those of the starting material. In the discharge, the metal ions serve as electron receptors and 1,2-benzenedithiolate holds lithium ions. The separate electron/lithium ion storage process is highly reversible, which is evidenced by the cycling performances of 200 and 500 cycles for the Li/Sn-(BDT) 2 and Li/Cu-BDT cells, respectively. This strategy is promising to overcome the intrinsic disadvantages of organosulfides as cathode materials for lithium batteries.
