Epitaxial Growth of Cs3Cu2I5 Single-Crystal Arrays for UV-Responsive Neuromorphic Devices

Yang Yu,Zhonglong Zhang,Qiuchun Lu,Jiaqi Tang,Wenqiang Wu,Xun Han

Copper-based halides, a type of perovskite derivative, inherit their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability and also have the advantages of being nontoxic and stable. Despite the tremendous achievements of microfabrication in conventional halide perovskites, reports on copper-based halide array devices are rare due to their difficult high-quality crystallization. Here, by introducing single-crystal thin films grown by space confinement method as substrates, reliable photolithography based on their single crystals is successfully achieved and controllable homoepitaxial single-crystal arrays is demonstrated. By adjusting the substrate, angle, and growth time, the orientation, arrangement, and size of arrays could be controlled. Temperature and time are used to regulate the growth stage to obtain clean and appropriately sized arrays. ITO/Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /ITO neuromorphic device based on homoepitaxial arrays is developed. The variation of synaptic plasticity could be controlled by the number and frequency of light pulses. The device successfully simulated the process of “learning, forgetting, and relearning” in the human brain, demonstrating the potential of application in sensing-storage-computing-integrated devices.

Spectral adjustable Re-Cs3Cu2I5 nanocrystal-in-glass composite with long-term stability

Qihua Yang,Hanqi Wei,Guihua Li,Shujuan Zhao,Yuchen Ao,Xuan Liu,Le Fu,Gemei Cai

Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 materials exhibit significant potential in diverse application fields like LEDs, scintillation, photoelectric detection, and so on. However, their poor stability against moisture /water and singularity nature of emission band hinder their rapid utilization. Differing from the lattice or ligand modification methods commonly used, this work deftly integrates solid-state sintering and glass composite techniques to synthesize Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 nanocrystal-in-glass composite (NGC) with exceptional stability. Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NGC demonstrated remarkable stability, maintaining its integrity even after immersion in an aqueous solution for 240 h or exposure to air for 180 days. Importantly, this proposed fabrication approach further utilizes the high solubility of glass materials for rare earth elements to solve the problem of the low solid solubility of Re 3+ in Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 . The full-spectrum tunable emission has been achieved in the composite of Re 3+ and Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 materials for the first time. This study not only validates Re-Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NGC as a promising fluorescent material but also establishes a novel method for fabricating composite materials based on rare-earth and copper perovskites, along with verifying their suitability in optical applications such as anti-counterfeiting and temperature measurement.

Reaction controlled growth with formic acid for high-quality Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals

Jianming Lai,Qiutao Pan,Wenzhen Wang,Shaohan Wang,Ziyi Lai,Xiaoxi Feng,Jing Sun,Huanzhen Qi,Feng Hong,Zifa Zhang,Fei Xu,Junfeng Chen,Yan Zhu,Juan Qin,Hui Zhang,Run Xu,Linjun Wang

The recent emergence of low-dimensional copper-based halide perovskite Cs3Cu2I5, for use in optoelectronics and radiation detection, has evoked considerable interest. Presently, Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals grown using solution methods barely have clearly defined crystal planes and the crystal quality remains inferior. In this work, we have achieved high-quality Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals featuring prominent crystal habit planes through reducing the growth rate by controlling the concentration of I− ions via the addition of formic acid. The slow reaction between I3− and formic acid at a lower growth temperature can effectively control the concentration of I− ions in the solution, thereby reducing the growth rate and extending the metastable growth range simultaneously. This optimized process can yield high-quality single crystals, with a reduced full width at half maxima (FWHM) of 0.047° for the X-ray rocking curve on the (002) natural crystal habit plane, a substantially improved energy resolution of 7.1% for a photon energy of 511 keV, and an increased absolute light yield to 39 000 photons per MeV. Our study demonstrates that the reaction-controlled growth may be an effective way to improve the crystal quality of the copper-based halide perovskite.

Lead-free Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite vertical cavity surface emitting lasers with low threshold

Xiaofan Zhao,Anjun Luo,Zhongxi Lin,Xingli Zhong,Zhenguo Zhu,Qi Lin,Hui Su

Due to their non-toxicity, excellent thermal stability and optical properties , ternary copper halide perovskites , such as Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and CsCu 2 I 3 , have been widely used in light-emitting devices (LEDs), UV and X-ray scintillation detectors. However, laser devices based on these materials have not been fully investigated. In this work, we demonstrated thermally stable Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 thin films , deposited by dual-source co-evaporation, possessing a photo-luminescence quantum yield (PLQY) up to 50.62%. Using the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 as gain media, optically pumped perovskite vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (Pe-VCSELs) have been fabricated, integrating with a pair of distributed reflectors (DBRs), and shown lasing at 440 nm with a threshold of ∼1.12 μJ/cm 2 pumped by a 288 nm fs laser. Furthermore, a monolithic dual-wavelength laser, with lasing wavelengths of 458.8 nm and 505.6 nm, has been achieved by depositing an additional gain layer and DBR mirror. Those results indicate that the lead-free ternary copper halide perovskites could be suitable as laser gain materials.

Efficient and Reabsorption-Free Radioluminescence in Cs3Cu2I5 Nanocrystals with Self-Trapped Excitons

Linyuan Lian,Moyan Zheng,Weizhuo Zhang,Lixiao Yin,Xinyuan Du,Peng Zhang,Xiuwen Zhang,Jianbo Gao,Daoli Zhang,Liang Gao,Guangda Niu,Haisheng Song,Rong Chen,Xinzheng Lan,Jiang Tang,Jianbing Zhang

Radioluminescent materials (scintillators) are widely applied in medical imaging, nondestructive testing, security inspection, nuclear and radiation industries, and scientific research. Recently, all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystal (NC) scintillators have attracted great attention due to their facile solution processability and ultrasensitive X-ray detection, which allows for large area and flexible X-ray imaging. However, the light yield of these perovskite NCs is relatively low because of the strong self-absorption that reduces the light out-coupling efficiency. Here, NCs with self-trapped excitons emission are demonstrated to be sensitive, reabsorption-free scintillators. Highly luminescent and stable Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs with a photoluminescence quantum yields of 73.7%, which is a new record for blue emission lead-free perovskite or perovskite-like NCs, is produced with the assistance of InI 3 . The PL peak of the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs locates at 445 nm that matches with the response peak of a silicon photomultiplier. Thus, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs are demonstrated as efficient scintillators with zero self-absorption and extremely high light yield (≈79 279 photons per MeV). Both Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NC colloidal solution and film exhibit strong radioluminescence under X-ray irradiation. The potential application of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs as reabsorption-free, low cost, large area, and flexible scintillators is demonstrated by a prototype X-ray imaging with a high spatial resolution.

Kinetics-Controlled Interfacial Synthesis of Janus and Patchy Heterostructures Based on Perovskite Nanocrystals

Shuhua Chen,Xinnan Mao,Qixuan Zhong,Qi Pan,Jun Liu,Jie Fu,Di Yang,Jinxing Chen,Lu Wang,Qiao Zhang,Muhan Cao

Heterostructures integrated by diverse material featuring nanocrystals (NCs) tunable properties and functions are of great interest. However, to rationally design and precisely control the heterostructures in multiple shapes still remains a tremendous challenge. In this work, the nucleation of SiO 2 nanoparticles is manipulated via a kinetics-controlled water–hexane interfacial reaction system to construct Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /SiO 2 heterostructures, which can be well controlled in Janus and patchy morphology. In this interfacial reaction, the evolution of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs and the intrinsic formation mechanism of the heterostructures are investigated. It is observed that the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 NCs on the interface undergo a morphology transformation driven by ligand loss and exposed facets evolution. Increased wettability between Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and SiO 2 favors the formation of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /SiO 2 heterostructures. The key to this strategy is to break the rule of thermodynamic domination in reaction by kinetics manipulation when constructing the patchy heterostructure. To be noted, an increased stability is conferred on the resultant heterostructure product compared to naked perovskite NCs. This work enables to better control the complicated heterostructure configurations and understand their formation mechanism.

Efficient Blue-Emitting Rb+-doped Cs3Cu2I5 via Solvent Evaporation Crystallization for White LEDs

Xuanming Zhang,Ronggan Lu,Xiaochen Fang,Chenfeng Lin,Yongfeng Liu,Yanqiao Ding,Dongdong Yan,Xiaoyu Wang,Hao Xie,Cheng Wang,Weixiang Ye

The unique combination of strong excitonic properties and environmental stability in 0D copper halide crystals motivates the development of scalable ambient fabrication routes for high-quality emitters. Here, we report a low-temperature solvent vapor-assisted crystallization strategy to grow millimeter-sized Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals. Rb + doping effectively passivates surface defects, markedly enhancing moisture and ambient stability, with the photoluminescence intensity remaining nearly unchanged after 60 days in air. Notably, the 10% Rb + -doped crystals achieve a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 98.42%, demonstrating a pronounced emission enhancement. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations reveal that both pristine and 10% Rb + -doped structures reside in a similar energy window (−108 to −110 eV), while the doped system exhibits a more confined trajectory, suggesting a flattened energy landscape and suppressed defect formation. Doped lattice relaxations induce slight, direction-dependent bond contraction, improving coordination integrity without major distortion, consistent with material stability and device reliability. By integrating blue-emitting Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 :10% Rb + with green Cs 3 Cu 2 Cl 5 and red CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ , we fabricate high-performance white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) achieving CRI of 95.36, CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.30, 0.34), and outstanding luminance of 17734.5 cd/m 2 . These findings establish a versatile ambient pathway for defect-engineered Cs 3 Cu 2 X 5 (X = I, Cl) emitters, advancing their prospects for next-generation solid-state lighting technologies.

High-Quality Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA Scintillator Films Assisted by Multiprocessing for X-ray Imaging

Wei Zhou,Xiaodie Zhu,Jing Yu,Dedan Mou,Hongxing Li,Lingyu Kong,Tianchun Lang,Lingling Peng,Wenbo Chen,Xuhui Xu,Bitao Liu

In recent years, novel metal halide scintillators have shown great application potential due to their tunable emission wavelength, high X-ray absorption, and high luminescence efficiency. However, poor stability and complex device packaging remain key issues for metal halide scintillators, making it difficult to achieve high-resolution and flexible X-ray imaging applications. To address the above issues, a multiprocessing strategy was introduced to prepare Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA scintillator films for long-term stable application, mainly undergo different annealing treatments to make Cs3Cu2I5 crystals to accurately nucleate and then grow in-situ in the PMMA matrix. Then, a series of characterization results illustrate that the prepared Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA scintillator films have high crystallinity, uniform size, excellent flexibility, high stable photoluminescence (PL) and radioluminescence (RL) performance, and high-resolution X-ray imaging capability. Most importantly, Cs3Cu2I5@PMMA scintillator films can not only provide clear and accurate imaging recognition of objects with different complex structures but also maintain stable X-ray imaging quality within 60 days and can achieve flexible X-ray imaging. Therefore, we have provided an effective strategy for producing high-quality scintillator films to meet the multidimensional needs of a new generation of scintillators.

Boosting self-trapped exciton emission from Cs3Cu2I5 nanocrystals by doping-enhanced exciton-phonon coupling

Li Xiaohan,Liu Aijun,Wang Zhaoyu,Wei Youchao,Lin Qun,Chen Yameng,Liu Yongsheng,Hong Maochun

Self-trapped excitons (STEs) emission from halide perovskites with strong exciton-phonon coupling has attracted considerable attention due to the widespread application in optoelectronic devices. Nevertheless, the in-depth understanding of the relationship between exciton-phonon coupling and luminescence intensity remains incomplete. Herein, a doping-enhanced exciton-phonon coupling effect is observed in Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 nanocrystals (NCs), which leads to a remarkable increasement of their STEs emission efficiency. Mechanism study shows that the hetero-valent substitution of Cu + with alkaline-earth metal ions (AE 2+ ) causes a greater degree of Jahn–Teller distortion between the ground state and excited state structures of [Cu 2 I 5 ] 3− clusters as evidenced by our spectral analysis and first-principles calculations. As a consequence, an X-ray detector based on these Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 :AE NCs delivers an X-ray imaging resolution of up to 10 lp·mm −1 and a low detection limit of 0.37 µGy air ·s −1 , disclosing the potential of doping-enhanced exciton-phonon coupling effect in improving STEs-emission and practical application for X-ray imaging.

High-Resolution X-ray Imaging Based on Solution-Phase-Synthesized Cs3Cu2I5 Scintillator Nanowire Array

Juan Hui,Peng Ran,Yirong Su,Lurong Yang,Xuehui Xu,Tianyu Liu,Yang “Michael” Yang

Lead-free copper halide scintillators have shown tremendous potential applications in X-ray detection and imaging. However, the imaging resolution is still rather limited due to the lack of a scintillation waveguide, especially for the solution-processed nanocrystal scintillators. Here, we report a solution synthesis route for Cs3Cu2I5 nanowire (NW) arrays via an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template-assisted in situ growth. As the NWs grow, the precursor concentration directly affects the length and uniformity of the Cs3Cu2I5 NWs among the various factors. The as-synthesized Cs3Cu2I5 NW array scintillators achieve a high spatial resolution of 20 lp mm–1, which is so far the highest value for this emerging copper halide scintillators. The present study provides a convenient and facile method to synthesize Cs3Cu2I5 NW arrays for high-resolution X-ray imaging.

Jing Su,Yubin Kang,Yichen Zhu,Zhi Wen,Mingchun Li,Qiangqiang Zhu,Yue Zhai,Tengfei Wu,Le Wang

Owing to their environmental friendliness and excellent luminescent properties, lead-free copper-based halide perovskites have attracted significant attention for use in next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this work, Ga-doped Cs3Cu2I5 phosphors derived from CsCu2I3 were synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method. Ga doping effectively modulated the crystal growth behavior and electronic structure, enabling high-performance emission tuning. The optimized material exhibited high-color-purity blue emission centered at ∼446 nm, with a CIE color purity as high as 97.7%. Owing to its exceptional optical properties, a blue LED device was fabricated, exhibiting stable and high-color-purity emission, thereby highlighting its practical potential for high-resolution display technologies and solid-state lighting applications. Furthermore, the material demonstrates remarkable water-induced color-switching behavior, enabling reversible color changes upon exposure to water. This characteristic renders it a promising candidate for applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption. This study provides new insights and strategic directions for the development of copper-based perovskites aimed at achieving high-color-purity blue emission and multifunctional intelligent material applications.

Using a Novel Melt-Cooling Crystallization Method to Prepare High-Quality Cs3Cu2I5 X-ray Scintillators

Rui Liu,Zhiyong Liu,Chengxu Lin,Chenyu Li,Shuang Xi,Xingyue Liu,Guanglan Liao,Tielin Shi

Copper halide, as a highly attractive and promising type of scintillator, has attracted a great deal of attention in the field of X-ray imaging. However, controllable preparation of copper-based halide perovskite films with uniformity, large size, high radiation stability, and excellent scintillation performance remains a major challenge. Herein, we propose a melt-cooling crystallization method to prepare high-quality Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite powder blocks with uniform size in batches, grind the perovskite powder blocks into uniformly fine particles, and mix them with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain large-area, highly stable, and excellent-scintillation-performance perovskite scintillator films. The Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator film exhibits a large Stokes shift (141 nm) and a photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 92.1%, effectively ensuring the decoupling efficiency of light. Moreover, the large-area scintillator film (20 × 16 cm2) obtains a low detection limit (40.29 nGy/s) and a spatial resolution up to 11.7 lp/mm. Meanwhile, the Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator film has excellent flexibility and can maintain its original appearance even after more than 1000 continuous stretching and bending cycles. Finally, high-quality X-ray imaging of different objects by scintillators is demonstrated. These results highlight the application prospects of Cs3Cu2I5 scintillator films in low-cost, high-performance, large-area, and flexible imaging.
