Enhanced oxytetracycline photocatalytic degradation via ferroelectric polarization-engineered TiO2/BTO-P/GQDs heterostructure: Synergistic rapid charge extraction and comprehensive reactive site optimization

Ming Xie,Yulin Tan,Zhenhua Zhi,Yanfang He,Dawei Cao

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been extensively utilized owing to its outstanding physicochemical properties in the field of photocatalytic degradation. However, its efficiency is fundamentally limited by poor charge carrier mobility and severe recombination. These defects critically impair both charge utilization and reactive oxygen species generation. Herein, we in-situ hydrothermally grow ferroelectric barium titanate (BTO) layers on vertically aligned TiO 2 nanorod arrays (NRs), polarize the sample via an external electric field, and load graphene quantum dots (GQDs) through controlled impregnation, successfully constructing a TiO 2 /BTO-Polarized/GQDs (TiO 2 /BTO-P/GQDs) heterostructure. An external electric field induces a stable depolarization field in the BTO layer, creating a persistent interfacial driving force that enhances charge extraction from TiO 2 while suppressing bulk and surface electron-hole recombination. The BTO layer further acts as an electron transfer highway, efficiently channeling photogenerated electrons to GQDs. The π-conjugated system of GQDs serves as both an electron accumulation platform and a chemically active surface, facilitating pollutant adsorption and activation, thereby synergistically accelerating degradation kinetics through combined electron storage and catalytic effects. TiO 2 /BTO-P/GQDs demonstrated a 2.06-fold higher (OTC) degradation efficiency (82.5%) compared to unmodified TiO 2 (40%) within 90 min. This study provides novel insights into ferroelectric polarization-enhanced photocatalytic degradation efficiency. Implication This work presents a highly efficient, stable, and recoverable photocatalyst (TiO 2 /BTO-P/GQDs) for degrading persistent antibiotic pollutants like oxytetracycline in water. By enabling effective solar-driven remediation of agricultural wastewater, it offers a promising strategy to mitigate antibiotic contamination, protect aquatic ecosystems, and reduce risks to microbial communities and human health associated with residual antibiotics in the environment.

Melocanna humilis leaves-inspired droplet electricity generator with hierarchical charge regulation for stable energy harvesting in high-humidity environments

Xiaohui Zhu,Guizhong Tian,Yan Li,Fengqin Li,Wenqian Li,Xudong Xu,Peng Chen,Xiaoming Feng

Against the backdrop of pressing global challenges in energy transition and environmental sustainability, droplet-based electricity generator (DEG) have emerged as promising candidates for energy harvesting. However, its output performance under high-humidity conditions has been hampered by moisture-induced charge dissipation. Here, we report a humidity-resistant DEG (HR-DEG) inspired by Melocanna humilis leaves. Specifically, a bio-inspired hierarchical micro/nanostructure with condensation-shedding properties is fabricated by precisely controlling interactions between BTO, PTFE, and PDMS film. This design substantially reduces surface energy, thereby mitigating charge dissipation to ambient moisture and suppressing charge screening effects. Furthermore, the synergistic integration of the polarization-enhancing properties of BTO with the strong electronegativity of PTFE enables hierarchical charge regulation, leading to markedly improved output performance. Experimental results demonstrate that HR-DEG achieves an open-circuit voltage exceeding 230 V, an output charge of 315 nC, and a peak power of 83 μW while retaining approximately 90 % of its full-scale output at 90 % RH. Additionally, the device exhibits excellent moisture resistance after physical and chemical stability tests. Especially, even after more than 15,000 operation cycles and 90 days, HR-DEG still achieves an output of over 190 V. These results highlight the potential for energy harvesting in high humidity and other challenging conditions.

Hybrid nanogenerator with dual-mode sensing capability for intelligent material recognition and energy harvesting

Xue Li,Jiachen Ye,Haohao Zhang,Xiaoran Gong

The hybrid nanogenerator (HNG) represents a transformative dual-mode sensing platform enabling concurrent material identification and temperature detection. This study fabricated electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride/barium titanate (PVDF/BTO) composite films as core functional components, where the PVDF matrix demonstrated exceptional ferroelectric responsiveness to ambient thermal fluctuations, while perovskite-structured BTO nanoparticles provided enhanced piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics essential for hybrid energy harvesting. Building upon this composite architecture, we engineered a triboelectric nanogenerator (Z-TENG) featuring two breakthrough capabilities: (i) quantitative characterization of contact materials through output voltage signatures, and (ii) intrinsic temperature sensing via PVDF's pyroelectric response. Synergistic BTO integration boosted the Z-TENG's voltage output by 157.7 % compared to pristine PVDF-based counterparts. Furthermore, the HNG system achieved 96 % material classification accuracy through machine learning-enhanced multimodal signal analysis, demonstrating a statistically significant improvement over conventional single-mode triboelectric systems (83.6 %). This study not only highlights the significant advantages of HNG in the field of object recognition, but also provides a new perspective and path for exploring more intelligent and efficient energy collection and object recognition technology.

Hyaluronic acid-covered piezoelectric nanocomposites as tumor microenvironment modulators for piezoelectric catalytic therapy of melanoma

Cheng Chen,Dehong Yu,Wandong Wang,Yuqi Huang,Yu Ying,Weiwei Sheng,Xiunan Wu,Yun Wang,Fenglei Gao,Guan Jiang

Increasing the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing the elimination of ROS are the two main objectives in the development of novel inorganic sonosensitizers for use in sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Therefore, BTO–Pd–MnO 2 –HA nanocomplexes with targeted tumor cells and degradable oxygen-producing shells were designed as piezoelectric sonosensitizers for enhancing SDT. The deposition of palladium particles (Pd NPs) leads to the formation of Schottky junctions, promoting the separation of electron–hole pairs and thereby increasing the efficiency of toxic ROS generation in SDT. The tumor microenvironment (TME) triggers the degradation of MnO 2 , and the released Mn 2+ ions catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) from H 2 O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. BTO–Pd–MnO 2 –HA can continuously consume glutathione (GSH) and generate O 2 , thereby improving the efficiency of SDT and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). A multistep enhanced SDT process mediated by the piezoelectric sonosensitizers BTO–Pd–MnO 2 –HA was designed, targeted by hyaluronic acid (HA), activated by decomposition in TME, and amplified by deposition of Pd. This procedure not only presents a new alternative for the improvement of sonosensitizers but also widens the application of piezoelectric nanomaterials in biomedicine.

Tongrui Xian,Jiangtao Zhou,Chen Cao,Qiwei Zheng,Yan Peng,Peilun Yin,Xiaohui Tang,Zhongjie Li

Post-poling-free P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO nanofiber sensors prepared by electrospinning. • A β-phase content of 82.86% was achieved through in-situ electric field orientation and interfacial polarization. • Sensor shows 530.6 mV·kPa −1 sensitivity (0.33–3.33 kPa), 21 ms response time, and excellent durability. • A complete "material–device–circuit–virtual feedback" closed-loop interactive system was constructed. With the rapid advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), the paradigm of human-machine interaction is shifting toward immersive and multidimensional experiences. In this study, a post-poling-free P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO (PVTB) composite nanofiber sensor with high electroactivity was fabricated by leveraging the synergy between charge trapping and interfacial polarization at the BTO/P(VDF-TrFE) interface, combined with in-situ electric-field orientation during electrospinning. The resulting nanofibers exhibit a mean diameter of 469.8 ± 168.2 nm, and the PVTB membrane achieves a high β-phase content of 82.86%. The PVTB sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 530.6 mV·kPa −1 within the low-pressure range of 0.33–3.33 kPa and 18.2 mV·kPa −1 within the pressure range of 3.33–83.33 kPa, with a minimum detectable force of 0.2 N, a response time of 21 ms, and 88.1% voltage retention after 10000 loading cycles. The PVTB sensor enables effective monitoring of ultra-weak muscle tremor signals, while finger tapping produces an output voltage of approximately 0.4 V. A four-channel “material-device-circuit-virtual feedback” closed-loop interactive system was constructed, demonstrating the potential of flexible piezoelectric sensors in immersive human-machine interaction and providing a precise digital approach for movement disorder rehabilitation. Spatiotemporally-graded BHP/G@met scaffold system enables sequential angiogenesis-osteogenesis coupling for accelerated bone regeneration

Han Zhang,Shuqing Chen,Guodong Zhang,Yongbin Wang,Zichen Cui,Fei Chen,Yukun Du,Guanghui Gu,Tianyu Bai,Changlin Lv,Wenkang Yang,Shiqi Xu,Jianwei Guo,Weiqing Kong,Yongming Xi

Addressing the clinical challenge of spatiotemporal coordination between vascularization and osteogenesis in bone repair, this study develops a composite scaffold system integrating piezoelectric stimulation and controlled drug release to achieve sequential regulation of angiogenesis-osteogenesis coupling. Combining piezoelectric barium titanate/nano-hydroxyapatite/polycaprolactone (BTO/nHA/PCL, BHP) with metformin (Met)-loaded GelMA (G@Met) hydrogels, the BHP/G@Met scaffolds are fabricated through dual-nozzle 3D printing. Material characterization confirms hierarchical porosity, stable piezoelectric output under ultrasound (US), and sustained drug release kinetics aligned with early-phase vascularization requirements. In vitro co-culture models demonstrate enhanced endothelial cell migration and tubular network formation during the initial 7d phase, followed by potent osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells at intermediate (14d) and terminal (21d) periods. Dual-animal models reveal superior bone regeneration with extensive neovascularization and osseous tissue infiltration. Transcriptome sequencing and network pharmacological analyses identify PI3K-AKT signaling as the central pathway for BHP/G@Met coordinating sequential angiogenesis-osteogenesis. By synergizing piezoelectric bioelectrical cues with spatiotemporal drug delivery, BHP/G@Met pioneers a chronologically adaptive strategy to match the spatial-temporal bone healing microenvironments, offering a paradigm for dynamic tissue regeneration.

AC/DC dual-type pressure and movement sensor based on the nanoresistance network

Kongsen Hu,Jiyuan Feng,Nan Lv,Zhiwei Lyu,Yuteng Zhang,Haifeng Zhang

Flexible pressure and movement sensors with dual-type signals have broad application potential in smart electronics and robotics. However, most devices usually require the assembly of various functional materials through a multistep and tedious process to realize the alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) dual-mode output, resulting in difficult-to-control sensor volumes, complicated structures, and flexibility limitations. Here, we develop a dual-type signal pressure and movement sensor via fabricating the electrospun [polyvinyl pyrrolidone/polyaniline]//[polyacrylonitrile/barium titanate] ([PVP/PANI]//[PAN/BTO]) bifunctional Janus nanofiber films (BJNFF), which is able to generate AC or DC signals in different working modes. In working mode I, the BJNFF can produce an AC voltage signal (2.33 V N −1 ) for detecting vertical pressure. In working mode II, by moving Al over the BJNFF, the BJNFF can follow the dynamic Schottky contact to generate electron migration, thereby producing a DC output voltage signal for slip sensing. As a result, BJNFF utilizes the AC and DC conduction characteristics of the nanoresistance network to achieve AC/DC output compatibility in one integrated sensing material by one-step construction. Moreover, the BJNFF exhibits high sensitivity and maintains stability after reciprocating motion. These findings provide an efficient way for developing multifunctional sensors and achieving flexible smart electronics.

Dynamically evolving piezoelectric nanocomposites for antibacterial and repair-promoting applications in infected wound healing

Zixin Zhu,Xue Gou,Laiyi Liu,Tian Xia,Jiayi Wang,Yimeng Zhang,Chenjun Huang,Wei Zhi,Ran Wang,Xiaohong Li,Shengnian Luo

Wound healing from bacterial infections is one of the major challenges in the biomedical field. The traditional single administration methods are usually accompanied with side effects or unsatisfactory efficacy. Herein, we design dynamically evolving antibacterial and repair-promoting nanocomposites (NCs) by in situ self-assembling of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on the surface of barium titanate (BTO), and further loading with a small amount of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The new strategy of combining pH-stimulated drug delivery and ultrasound-controlled sonodyamics has the potential to dynamically evolve in infected wound sites, offering a multifunctional therapy. In vitro study demonstrates that the enhancement generation of reactive oxygen species through the sonodynamic process due to the heterostructures and a small amount of CIP released in an acidic environment are synergistically antibacterial, and the inhibition rate was >99.9%. In addition, reduced sonodynamic effect and Zn 2+ generated along with the gradual degradation of ZIF-8 simultanously promote cell migration and tissue regeneration . The in vivo study of full-thickness skin wounds in mouse models demonstrate a healing rate of 99.3% could be achieved under the treatment of [email protected] /CIP NCs. This work provides a useful improvement in rational design of multi-stimulus-responsive nanomaterials for wound healing. Statement of significance A novel piezoelectric nanocomposite was proposed to realize sonodynamic therapy and pH-stimulated drug releasing simultaneously in wound healing treatment. The dynamically evolving structure of the piezoelectric nanocomposite in acidic microenvironment has been theoretically and experimentally verified to contribute to a continuous variation of sonodymanic strength , which accompanied with the gradual releasing of drug and biocompatible Zn 2+ effectively balanced antibacterial and repair-promoting effects. Both of the in vitro and in vivo study demonstrated that the strategy could significantly accelerate wound healing, inspiring researchers to optimize the design of multi-stimulus-responsive nanomaterials for various applications in biomedical and biomaterial fields.
