In situ construction of heterostructured CuxO@NiCoS nanoarrays for alkaline overall water splitting

Chenyu Song,Jishuang Yang,Chinnadurai Ayappan,Haitang Yang,Ruimin Xing,Shanhu Liu

Hierarchical hybrid heterostructures are promising for efficient and sustainable electrocatalysts due to their various morphologies and outstanding electrochemical properties. Herein, heterostructured CuxO@NiCoS nanoarrays were in situ constructed on copper foam (denoted as CuxO@NiCoS/CF) and used as electrocatalysts for alkaline overall water splitting. Benefiting from the hierarchical hybrid heterostructure that exposes abundant active sites and the synergistic effect between CuxO and NiCoS, CuxO@NiCoS/CF shows better electrocatalytic performance than single-component electrocatalysts (CuxO/CF and NiCoS/CF). The influence of the initial metal source ratio (Ni/Co) during the electrodeposition on electrocatalytic performance was further investigated. Impressively, the optimized CuxO@NiCoS-1/CF exhibits a small overpotential of 110 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 313 mV at 30 mA cm−2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, CuxO@NiCoS-1/CF as bifunctional electrocatalysts reach a current density of 30 mA cm−2 at a low cell voltage of 1.79 V and display remarkable electrocatalytic durability in an alkaline solution. This work can provide a new idea for designing and preparing novel non-noble metal electrocatalysts with the benefit of structural diversity.

CuxO decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene composites for non-enzymatic glucose sensing with large linear ranges

Feng Lei,Chen Junji,Yang Min,Wang Juan,Yin Shougen,Zhang Deliang,Qin Wenjing,Song Jibin

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/Cu x O composites were prepared by acid etching combined with electrochemical technique. The abundant active sites on the surface of MXene greatly increase the loading of Cu x O nanoparticles, and the synergistic effect between the different components of the composite can accelerate the oxidation reaction of glucose. The results indicate that at the working potential of 0.55 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the glucose sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/Cu x O composite presents large linear concentration ranges from 1 µM to 4.655 mM (sensitivity of 361 µA mM −1 cm −2 ) and from 5.155 mM to 16.155 mM (sensitivity of 133 µA mM −1 cm −2 ). The limit of detection is 0.065 µM. In addition, the sensor effectively avoids the oxidative interference of common interfering species such as ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid. The sensor has good reproducibility, stability and acceptable recoveries for the detection of glucose in human sweat sample (97.5-103.3%) with RSD values less than 4%. Based on these excellent properties it has great potential for the detection of glucose in real samples. Graphical abstract

A vacancy-enriched amorphous molybdenum oxide electrodeposited on CuxO for enhanced aqueous energy storage

Jiaxin Luo,Shengtong Lv,Meina Tan,Fazhi Zhang,Xuhui Zhao,Yiping Wang,Xiaodong Lei

Introducing disorder into crystalline hierarchical nanostructure along with defect engineering can be utilized to systematically modulate the electronic structure of copper-based materials to enhance electrochemical performance. Herein, a Cu x O/MoO y (x:1–2, y:2–3) self-supporting electrode on 3D copper foam is prepared by simple electrodeposition method, in which the crystallized Cu x O is coated by an ultra-thin amorphous MoO y layer. It is shown that the strong binding between the active material and substrate further enhances the structural stability. The synergistic interaction among multi-components, coupled with oxygen vacancies, greatly optimizes the electronic structure of the material, then improves its conductivity, further accelerates electron transfer kinetics. Therefore, Cu x O/MoO y with high areal mass loading exhibits a specific areal capacity of 12.89 mA h·cm −2 at 20 mA cm −2 , even maintained 92 % capacity retention at 100 mA cm −2 . The conducted hybrid capacitor exhibited the maximum energy density of 0.9 mWh·cm −2 at the power density of 7.5 mW cm −2 , demonstrating great potential in practical application.

Fabrication of CuxO Nanoparticle Electrodes Via Electroplating-Based Laser-Induced Transfer for Glucose Detection

Siyu Chen,Yexin Pan,Haosong Zhong,Minseong Kim,Connie Kong Wai Lee,Xupeng Lu,Yee Him Timothy Chan,Yi Chen,Mitch Guijun Li

The scalable synthesis of nanostructured copper oxide ( Cu x ⁢ O $ \mathrm{Cu_xO}$ ) with precise control over particle morphology and distribution presents significant challenges in electrochemical sensing. To address this issue, we introduce Electroplating-based Laser-Induced Transfer (EP-LIT), a novel manufacturing method that enables rapid and programmable fabrication of nanoparticle assemblies on carbon cloth (CC). This method uniquely combines electroplating, which allows for adjustable copper film growth on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass, with laser processing for material transfer, fragmentation, and oxidation. By systematically optimizing electroplating parameters and laser settings, we achieve precise control over nanoparticle size, composition, and spatial distribution. The resulting Cu x ⁢ O @ CC $ \mathrm{Cu_xO@CC}$ electrode exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity for glucose detection, which can be attributed to its dense nanoparticle architecture and tailored surface chemistry. The optimized electrode demonstrates a sensitivity of 3.13 and a detection limit (LOD) of 1.79 , retaining 99.5% of its initial response over 7 days. Beyond glucose sensing, EP-LIT provides a transformative platform for the on-demand synthesis of tunable metal oxide nanomaterials, enabling precise nanoscale control to advance complex electrochemical interfaces and multiplexed biomarker detection.

Polydopamine-modified CuxO nanoparticles for selective electroreduction of CO2 to ethylene under neutral conditions

Huiyan Ren,Liuliu Zhu,Hongbo Gu

Converting CO 2 into high-value C 2+ products under neutral conditions holds significant importance for both energy development and environmental sustainability, yet it remains a formidable challenge. In this work, we synthesize sea urchin-shaped Cu x O nanoparticles coated with polydopamine (Cu x O@PDA), in which the PDA creates a favorable local microenvironment for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (ECO 2 RR). Specifically, PDA promotes the hydrogenation reduction of *CO, stabilizes the pivotal *CHO and *OCCHO intermediates, and reduces the energy barrier for the coupling of *CO and *CHO. Leveraging these advantages, Cu x O@PDA achieves a maximum Faraday efficiency for C 2 H 4 up to 53.4% in the neutral electrolyte at potential of -1.4   V vs . RHE, which is 22.3% higher than that of Cu x O at the same potential. This study offers new insights into enhancing the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance of copper oxides through polymer modification, providing a promising strategy for improving the selectivity and efficiency of C 2 H 4 product under neutral conditions.

Insight into radical-nonradical coupling activation pathways of peroxymonosulfate by CuxO for antibiotics degradation

Jin Tang,Siyu Yao,Runlin Yao,Hang Liu,Meiqin Chen,Yongming Zhong,Xiaolong Yu,Aiguo Yin,Jianteng Sun

In this work, a heterogeneous catalyst of Cu x O was rationally designed by using Cu-based metal organic frameworks (marked Cu-BDC) as the template, and was used to degrade tetracycline (TC) via activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The optimal Cu x O-350 showed excellent catalytic efficiency for TC degradation , and the reaction rate constant (0.104 min −1 ) was 8 times higher than that (0.013 min −1 ) of raw Cu-BDC. The characterization observations confirmed that Cu x O-350 possessed multiple valence states (CuO and Cu 2 O) and oxygen vacancies (O v ), both of which were favorable for the activation of PMS, resulting in promoting the generation of active species in the Cu x O-350 + PMS system. Different from the free radical pathway in Cu-BDC + PMS system, a radical-nonradical coupling process was detected in the Cu x O-350 + PMS system, which was confirmed by quenching experiments and EPR measurements. Moreover, the toxicity prediction showed that the toxicity of degradation intermediates declined compared with TC. This work not only opened up a new strategy for the rational design and preparation of high-efficient catalysts by employing metal organic frameworks precursors, but also offered an insight into the reaction mechanism of PMS activation through a radical-nonradical coupling process catalyzed by Cu x O-350 derived from Cu-BDC.

Defect-Rich MoO3@CuxO Heterointerface with Abundant Cu+ Active Sites for Efficient Aerobic Oxidative Desulfurization

Liu Xi,Wu Wenjian,Wang Ran,Li Rongkang,Li Yafei,Hou Jie,Xiao Fuquan,Zhu Linhua

Heterointerface engineering is a catalyst design strategy based on the symbiotic growth of heterogeneous metal oxides. This strategy endows electronic structures, surface properties, and generation of active centers that are unavailable in the individual oxides. It can even generate entirely new active sites, thereby significantly enhancing catalytic performance. Herein, we prepared MoO 3 @Cu x O with symbiotic MoO 3 and CuO as a catalyst for aerobic catalytic oxidative desulfurization. Notably, after symbiosis, the catalyst exhibits new low-valence Cu + active sites absent in the individual oxides, along with defective interfaces more favorable for catalytic reactions and enhanced surface redox properties. Catalytic testing validates these findings: these new low-valence Cu + active sites enable the activation of superoxide radicals, achieving 100% desulfurization of aromatic sulfur compounds under air atmosphere within 5 h. Through the rational design of symbiotic heterogeneous metal oxides, this study not only highlights the pivotal role of heterointerface engineering in catalytic oxidation but also offers an effective strategy for designing oxidative desulfurization catalysts. Valence Modulation of CeO2/CuxO Inverse Catalysts via Crystal Plane Engineering for CO Preferential Oxidation

Wenxia Zhou,Guoqiang Song,Jiaxi Zhong,Yumeng Liu,Xiaohua Chen,Muchen Yu,Shaohan Yuan,Qiliang Fan,Xia Gong,Qian Liu,Feiyang Hu,Lei Gong,Sibudjing Kawi

The CO preferential oxidation is vital for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stability, and the reverse catalyst design shows promise for improving its activity and durability. Herein, cubic and octahedral Cu2O crystals were synthesized via the solid-phase method. Subsequent decoration with CeO2 yielded inverse CeO2/Cu2O catalysts, and oxidative treatment converted Cu2O to CuO, forming the final CeO2/CuO catalysts. The CeO2/Cu2O catalyst exhibits superior activity compared to CeO2/CuO, with CeO2/Cu2O-8 demonstrating the lowest complete CO conversion temperature (168 °C) and the widest operating window (168–200 °C). This enhanced performance originates from unsaturated copper sites, which facilitate faster electron transfer and oxygen vacancy formation while providing high specific surface area and elevated Ce3+ content. This study established fundamental insights for designing inverse catalysts through crystal plane engineering in CO-PROX, potentially extending to other catalytic systems requiring precise surface control.

CuxO/Au chimeric micro–nanoparticles for sensitive SERS monitoring of cigarette smoke via synergistic enhancement

Yongfeng Tian,Wang Huo,Jing Xie,Shanzhai Shang,Xia Zhang,Donglai Zhu,Gaofeng Dong,Mingquan Yang,Xingjiu Huang,Xianghu Tang

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been widely used for trace analyte detection, largely depending on the design and fabrication of SERS substrates. Among the various types of substrates, hybrid materials that integrate plasmonic metals with functional semiconductors have attracted increasing attention due to their synergistic properties. This study presents the rational design and synthesis of CuxO/Au chimeric micro–nanoparticles as high performance substrates for SERS detection. The hybrids were fabricated via a galvanic replacement reaction, where Cu2O particles acted as both sacrificial templates and reducing agents for the deposition of Au nanostructures from HAuCl4 solutions. By systematically varying the HAuCl4 concentration, the morphology, composition, and interfacial properties of the resulting materials were precisely tuned. The optimized substrate, denoted as CuxO/Au-10, demonstrated remarkable SERS performance, attributed to the synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement from Au nanoparticles and chemical enhancement arising from charge transfer at the metal–semiconductor interface. The SERS activity was rigorously evaluated using nicotine as a probe molecule, showing high detection sensitivity. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the substrate was successfully demonstrated in a dynamic puff-by-puff analysis of tobacco smoke from both conventional cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HNB). SERS detection revealed significantly more complex and intense spectra for traditional cigarette smoke compared to the smoke from HNB cigarettes. This highlights the sensitivity and utility of CuxO/Au chimeric micro–nanoparticles for dynamic chemical analysis. This work not only offers a tunable synthesis strategy for high-performance SERS substrates but also paves the way for their application in complex environmental and analytical scenarios.

CNTs/rGO spheres decorated with CuxO (x = 1 or 2) nanoparticles and its photocatalytic performance

Bin Zeng,Xiaohua Chen,Xutao Ning,Chuansheng Chen,Aiping Hu,Weina Deng

Carbon nanotubes and reduced graphene oxides (CNTs/rGO) sphere decorated with Cu 2 O, CuO nanoparticles (Cu x O–CNTs/rGO) was successfully synthesized by spray drying and post-calcinating method for the first time. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed that CNTs/rGO formed a spherical micrometer structure and Cu x O nanoparticles were decorated on their surface. The experimental results indicated that this novel architecture enhanced photocatalytic performance with 97.5% decomposition of methyl orange (MO) after 20   min in the presence of H 2 O 2 under visible light irradiation, which was much higher than that of pure Cu x O powders (31.2%).

Modulating band structure through introducing Cu0/CuxO composites for the improved visible light driven ammonia synthesis

Huaiwei Zhang,Liang Bao,Qingwei Zhou,Ying Pan,Jingyuan Ge,Jia Du

The photocatalytic performance of ceria-based materials can be tuned by adjusting the surface structures with decorating the transition-metal, which are considered as the important active sites. Herein, cuprous oxide-metallic copper composite - doped ceria nanorods were assembled through a simple hydrothermal reduction method. The photocatalytic ammonia synthesis rates exhibit an inverted “V-shaped” trend with increasing Cu 0 /Cu x O mole ratio. The best ammonia production rate, approximately 900 or 521 µmol·g cal −1 ·h −1 under full-spectra or visible light , can be achieved when the Cu 0 /Cu x O ratio is approximately 0.16, and this value is 8 times greater than that of the original sample. The absorption edge of the as-prepared samples shifted towards visible wavelengths, and they also had appropriate ammonia synthesis levels. This research provides a strategy for designing noble metal-free photocatalysts through introducing the metal/metallic oxide composites   to the catalysts.

A Confined CuxO@Styrene Microreactor Achieves the Conversion of CO2 to C2+ Products via Intermediate Trapping

Jiaxin Bai,Xueru Zhao,Jinlong Wu,Min Zhu,Weiwei Fan,Jingtian Ni,Zhouzhou Li,Shiyuan Xu,Jing Li,Feng Li

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products is impeded by the instability and inefficient utilization of key reaction intermediates. To address this challenge, we developed a strategy based on geometric control of spatially confined microenvironments, enabling the rational design of programmable Cu x O microreactors on Cu 2+ (111)/Cu + (200) substrates. Two distinct catalyst architectures—small-ordered (s-Cu x O@styrene) and large-ordered (c-Cu x O@styrene)—were systematically engineered to modulate CO intermediate behavior, thereby directing reaction selectivity toward ethylene and ethanol production. Faradaic efficiencies for C 2+ products demonstrate pronounced dependence on microstructure: increasing from negligible values in the small-ordered s-Cu x O@styrene (25.6% ethylene,12.4% ethanol, 3% propylene) to 78.8% in the large-ordered c-Cu x O@styrene (55% ethylene, 23% ethanol, 1% propylene). In situ infrared spectroscopy reveals that the highly ordered configuration enhances CO adsorption, promoting the accumulation of critical *OCCOH and *OC 2 H 5 intermediates. Moreover, synergistic interactions between Cu + and Cu 0 active sites accelerate C–C coupling kinetics, favoring selective formation of C 2+ species. This work establishes a geometry-driven paradigm for controlling catalytic selectivity independent of compositional tuning, offering a promising avenue for the development of adaptive catalytic systems in renewable energy conversion.
