Electronic structure and optical properties of Tb3+ host-sensitized NaTb(MoO4)2 narrow-band green-emitting phosphor

Zou Wenqian,Zhang Mengyu,Liu Xichen,Ding Shoujun J.,Zou Yong

Developing highly efficient and stable inorganic narrow-band green-emitting phosphor is crucial for phosphor converted backlighting devices. In this study, trivalent Tb 3+ ions self-actived NaTb(MoO 4 ) 2 (NTM) narrow-band green-emitting phosphor was prepared by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The electronic structure, luminescence properties and luminescence thermal stability of NTM were studied through experiments and theoretical calculations. The structure of NTM was determined to be a tetragonal phase with the space group of I41/a (88). Besides, the NTM was confirmed with direct bandgap characteristics with bandgap width of 3.1231 eV. Upon 266 nm and 355 nm ultraviolet (UV) excitation, the narrow-band green-emitting properties of the phosphor were investigated. Importantly, the phosphor was confirmed with well luminescence thermal stability and the thermal activation energy ( E a ) was fitted to be 0.32 eV. The work demonstrates that trivalent Tb 3+ ions self-actived NTM is promising as high luminescence stable narrow-band green-emitting phosphor for backlighting display applications.

Self-assembled hierarchical architecture of tetragonal AgLa(MoO4)2 crystals: hydrothermal synthesis, morphology evolution and luminescence properties

Wenpeng Xia,Yufeng Zhang,Shanshan Hu,Jie Xiong,Jianfeng Tang,Jun Yang

Tetragonal AgLa(MoO4)2 microcrystals with novel discal hierarchical architectures were successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectral analysis as well as decay lifetimes were employed to characterize the prepared products. It was found that various hierarchical architectures were obtained by altering the amount of MoO42−, pH values and surfactants, respectively. In particular, the pH value had a large influence not only on the morphology, but also on the size and crystallinity. The formation mechanism of discal hierarchical architectures was proposed on the basis of the self-assembly growth of nanosheets. The AgLa(MoO4)2 microcrystals exhibited excellent down/up-conversion (DC/UC) multicolor emissions after doping different Ln3+ ions. For DC luminescence, AgLa(MoO4)2:Ln3+ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Sm, Dy) exhibited characteristic red emission, green emission, orange emission and yellow emission, respectively. The energy transfer of MoO42− → Ln3+ (Ln = Tb, Sm, Dy) markedly enhanced the characteristic emissions of Tb3+, Sm3+ and Dy3+. For UC luminescence, AgLa(MoO4)2:Yb3+/Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Tm, Ho) exhibited intense green (2H11/2 → 4I5/2 of Er3+), blue (1G4 → 3H6 of Tm3+), yellow (5F5 → 5I8 of Ho3+) emissions, respectively. Therefore, the as-prepared AgLa(MoO4)2:Ln3+ microcrystals may have potential application to serve as fluorescent lamps, field emission display devices, sensors and biological imaging agents.

Tunable KLa(MoO4)2:Eu3+@CDs composite materials for white LED and multi-mode information encryption technology

Ziqian Lv,Hanyu Xu,Zhiying Wang,Mochen Jia,Yanling Wei,Zuoling Fu

The composite of biocompatible carbon dots (CDs) and lanthanide-based luminescent materials have high research value as a promising multifunctional material, which are ideally suited to information encryption and white LED. However, the aggregation-induced quenching of CDs in the solid state still troubles the synthesis of CDs with other solid luminescent materials. Herein, a facile strategy to fabricate polychromatic nanoplatform KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ @CDs by encapsulating CDs on the surface of KLM: Eu 3+ with silicon shell is reported, in which the aggregation-induced quenching of CDs is avoided. Due to the overlapping of Eu-O charge transfer band with CDs excitation band, the red luminescence of Eu 3+ ions and the blue fluorescence of can be emitted simultaneously under 395 nm excitation. By changing the proportion of KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ in KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ @CDs, the mixture can emit "warm", "neutral", and "cold" white light, which can realize people's demand for indoor lighting requirements. Furthermore, a multi-mode information encryption by selectively triggering the luminescence of CDs or Eu 3+ ions is also designed. All the results suggest that KLa(MoO 4 ) 2 : Eu 3+ @CDs have excellent luminescence properties that can be further investigated and applied in the field of white LEDs and information encryption.

Huge enhancement in upconversion luminescence near-infrared emission of KYb (MoO4)2: Er3+ phosphor by doping Y3+ ions

Junshan Hu,Daobin Zhu,Keyu Guo,Bin Duan,Yuxiang Wu,Yongqiang Li,Fengyi Wang,Wei Jin,Changchun Ding

The KYb(MoO 4 ) 2 : Er 3+ , Y 3+ phosphors were synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction method. By further doping Y 3+ ions, the near-infrared (NIR, 804 nm, 4 I 9/2  →  4 I 15/2 ) luminescence of KYb(MoO 4 ) 2 : 0.1 % Er 3+ phosphor is greatly enhanced. Based on the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra, the optimal doping concentration of Y 3+ ions were 7.5 %. Its near-infrared UCL intensity is about 26.9 times that of undoped Y 3+ ions. Through a series of characterization methods, we find that the enhancement of NIR upconversion emission is due to the generation of defect bands. It plays a crucial role in facilitating the transfer of energy from green light level ( 2 H 11/2 , 4 S 3/2 ) to red light level ( 4 F 9/2 ) and near-infrared level. To explain the luminescence mechanism, the power dependence, UV-VI-NIR absorption spectra , excitation spectra at 804 nm and emission spectra at 380 nm were studied. In addition, the 804 nm single near-infrared UCL intensity of KYb (MoO 4 ) 2 : Er 3+ , Y 3+ shows a linear variation with temperature in the temperature range of 298 K–673 K. The maximum sensitivity is 0.13 % K −1 . This study provides a new method and theoretical support for the application of near-infrared UCL in optical temperature measurement.

iRGD-NaGd(MoO4)2: A Tumor-Targeted Magnetic Resonance Contrast Agent Activating Immunotherapy via the cGAS-STING Pathway

Ling Yu,Fengkai Qiu,Yumin Hu,Tingting Liao,Mengqian Zhai,Ronghua Wu,Qianhui He,Huilin Hu,Shuiwei Xia,Junguo Hui,Zufei Wang,Yang Yang,Rongfang Qiu,Minjiang Chen,Weiqian Chen,Jianfei Tu,Jiansong Ji,Chenying Lu

Because of the high incidence and mortality of cancer, there is an urgent need for more effective tumor diagnostic imaging and treatment strategies. Single-molecule therapeutics have emerged as a promising strategy to address the limitations of independent imaging and therapeutic modalities, thereby significantly reducing adverse side effects for patients. For the first time, we successfully synthesized NaGd(MoO4)2 nanoparticles via a homogeneous precipitation method in polyol media, which serve as a single-molecule agent for MRI imaging and metallic immunotherapy. With the addition of iRGD, we obtained iRGD-NaGd(MoO4)2. The iRGD-NaGd(MoO4)2 nanoparticles exhibit excellent tumor-targeting capability and significantly enhance T1-weighted MRI contrast with a longitudinal relaxivity of 4.95 mM–1 s–1. In terms of antitumor immunotherapy, iRGD-NaGd(MoO4)2 not only directly activates the cGAS-STING pathway but also induces ferroptosis in tumor cells, resulting in the generation of aberrant dsDNA and thereby indirectly activating the STING pathway. The dual pathway elicits a tumor-specific immune response, plays a significant role in promoting the maturation of DC cells, activates DC and T cells to secrete high levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and other cytokines, and regulates the polarization of macrophages from M2 phenotype to M1 phenotype. This mechanism significantly suppresses tumor growth. Beyond the metallic immunotherapy induced by Mn2+, Zn2+, and Co2+, this study provides robust validation of MoO42– as an effective cGAS-STING agonist. Moreover, this study achieved the synergy of multiple disciplines including biomaterials, tumor immunotherapy and medical imaging. This not only promotes the innovative integration in various fields, but also provides new treatment strategies and imaging tools for cancer treatment, which has important clinical application prospects.

Improved Luminescence Performance for W-LED Applications of the Eu3+-Activated Double Molybdate Red Phosphor NaLu(MoO4)2

Chonghui Niu,Mingjie Dan,Yi Yu,Xiurong Zhu,Yixin Fu,Yeqing Wang,Wang Zhao,Kenneth R. Poeppelmeier

In this study, a series of novel Eu3+-activated NaLu(MoO4)2 (NLMO) red phosphors were synthesized for the first time using hydrothermal, sol–gel, and microemulsion methods with varying active agents. The properties of these phosphors, including phase purity, crystal structure, DFT calculations, morphology, luminescence characteristics, thermal stability, and internal quantum efficiency, were comprehensively characterized. The results indicate that the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na)-assisted hydrothermal method is the most suitable approach for the preparation of the phosphor. This method yields phosphors with a regular morphology, outstanding luminescence performance, relatively good thermal stability, and significantly high internal quantum efficiency. The internal quantum efficiency reaches 96.45%, and the phosphor exhibits good thermal stability, with the emission intensity at 423 K remaining about 73% compared to the initial temperature. The CIE chromaticity coordinate of the NLMO/0.13Eu3+ sample (0.667, 0.333) is very close to the standard chromaticity coordinate value (0.670, 0.330) from the National Television Standards Committee (NTSC). Remarkably, the color purity of the NLMO:0.13Eu3+ phosphor is an impressive 97%. Furthermore, Tb3+ was cointroduced in the NLMO:0.13Eu3+ phosphor, and its positive effects are discussed. Ultimately, a warm white light-emitting diode (W-LED) was fabricated using the studied NLMO:0.13Eu3+ phosphor with a 394 nm near-ultraviolet-emitting LED chip as the excitation source. The W-LED exhibits excellent properties such as high color purity, excellent correlation color temperature, and high color rendering index. Considering all of the results, the NLMO/Eu3+ red phosphor obtained by the EDTA-2Na-assisted hydrothermal method is an ideal red component for W-LEDs in various lighting applications.

Photoluminescence properties and energy transfer of NaY(MoO4)2:R (R = Sm3+/Bi3+, Tb3+/Bi3+, Sm3+/Tb3+) phosphors

Changlin Liao,Renping Cao,Wudi Wang,Wen Hu,Guotai Zheng,Zhiyang Luo,Pan Liu

NaY(MoO 4 ) 2 :R (R   =   Sm 3+ /Bi 3+ , Tb 3+ /Bi 3+ , Sm 3+ /Tb 3+ ) phosphors are synthesized by solid-state reaction method in air. The crystal structures, excitation and emission spectra, luminescence properties, the lifetimes, and the dopant concentration influences are investigated. The emission intensity of activators Sm 3+ and Tb 3+ can be enhanced ∼3.04 and 1.64 times due to energy transfer (ET) from Bi 3+ to Sm 3+ /Tb 3+ . NaY(MoO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ , Tb 3+ phosphor with excitation 300   nm shows a tunable emission from red to yellow with change Sm 3+ or Tb 3+ ion concentration. Emission intensity of NaY(MoO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ phosphor can be enhanced ∼2.24 times via co-doping Tb 3+ ion owing to ET from Tb 3+ to Sm 3+ ions. The results indicate that ET between sensitizer and activator (Bi 3+   →   Tb 3+ , Bi 3+   →   Sm 3+ , and Tb 3+   →   Sm 3+ ) is beneficial to improve the luminescence properties of activator (Sm 3+ and Tb 3+ ). ET and luminous meachanisms are explained by energy level diagrams of Bi 3+ , Tb 3+ , and Sm 3+ ions.

Structural phase transition and quasi-layered active-ion distribution suppress concentration quenching in Tb3+-activated KBi(MoO4)2

Mengyu Zhang,Shujing Pan,Haitang Hu,Wenzhi Su,Yong Zou,Shoujun Ding,Qingli Zhang

Conventional Tb3+-doped phosphors typically suffer from concentration quenching once the doping level exceeds a critical threshold. Consequently, the development of Tb3+ phosphors with intrinsic resistance to concentration quenching has become a key research focus. In this work, we successfully synthesized KBi(MoO4)2: xTb3+ (x = 0–100 at%) (denoted as KBM: xTb3+) phosphors via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. Remarkably, no concentration quenching was observed across the entire doping range. This anti-quenching behavior originates from the large Tb3+–Tb3+ interionic distance (> 5 Å) inherent to the quasi-layered crystal structure, which effectively suppresses multipole-interaction-mediated energy migration. At full Tb3+ substitution (x = 100 at%), the material undergoes a structural phase transition from the monoclinic KBM phase to the triclinic α-KTb(MoO4)2 (α-KTM) phase. The α-KTM phosphor exhibits excellent thermal stability (activation energy = 0.6129 eV) and a single-exponential decay profile, whereas KBM: xTb3+ (x < 100%) display double-exponential decay behaviors, attributed to dual energy transfer pathways. These findings provide new insights into the luminescence mechanisms of high-concentration rare-earth-doped systems and offer guidance for designing next-generation anti-quenching phosphors.

Synthesis of novel K2Sr(MoO4)2:Sm3+ orange–red phosphors and application to high color rendering index white LEDs

Yang Jian,Xie Chenglong,Zhao Lei

A newly synthesized orange–red-emitting phosphor, K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ , was produced for the first time through high-temperature solid-state synthesis methods. Detailed analysis was conducted on the phase purity, morphology, and luminescence properties of the synthesized phosphors. The K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ phosphors let forth orange–red light when excited at 403 nm because of the 4 G 5/2  →  6 H 9/2 transition. The optimal doping concentration of the K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 : x Sm 3+ phosphor was found to be x  = 3 mol%. The chromaticity coordinates of K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :3 mol% Sm 3+ were (0.617, 0.381) with a corresponding high color purity of 99.8%. This prepared w-LED exhibited an exceptional color rendering index (CRI) of 90, while maintaining a suitable correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5825 K and CIE color coordinates were (0.325, 0.327). Hence, K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :Sm 3+ phosphors are desirable options for creating w-LEDs and lighting based on near-ultraviolet (NUV) chips. Their unique properties show significant potential for enhancing the performance of solid-state lighting.

Electronic transition pathways in energy transfer processes for upconversion photoluminescence of Yb3+/Ho3+ co-doped NaLa(MoO4)2 microcrystals

Anming Li,Ranhua Lu,Yongzhe Zhao,JieJie Yang,Junli Wang,Gao Zhao

In recent years, upconversion photoluminescent micro/nanocrystals with unique anti-Stokes luminescence properties have shown high application value in many relevant fields. In this work, pure tetragonal phase NaLa(MoO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microspheres have been synthesized by a solvothermal method in the presence of oleic acid and 1-octadecene. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, NaLa(MoO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microcrystals emit red, green and near infrared upconversion luminescence with peak wavelengths at 660/643 nm, 541 nm, and 756 nm. Based on the analysis of excitation power-dependent upconversion luminescence intensities and energy level diagram of Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ , electronic transition pathways in the energy transfer processes for upconversion luminescence of NaLa(MoO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ microcrystals are studied. For red upconversion luminescence at 660/643 nm, the predominant population pathway to state 5 F 5 (Ho 3+ ) is “Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 I 7 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 F 5 )”. While, “Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 I 6 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Ho 3+ ( 5 F 4 / 5 S 2 )” process accounts for the population of state 5 F 4 / 5 S 2 (Ho 3+ ) for radiative transitions of upconversion luminescence at 541 and 756 nm. Energy back transfer contributes to the intense red upconversion luminescence at 660/643 nm. These electronic transition pathways in energy transfer processes are further confirmed by the analyses based on energy level mismatch and luminescent lifetimes.

Blue-Light-Excited Eu3+/Sm3+ Co-Doped NaLa(MoO4)2 Phosphors: Synthesis, Characterizations and Red Emission Enhancement for WLEDs

Man Yan,Guanghui Liu,Jiahao Wen,Yinlong Wang

The system NaLa(MoO4)2:Eu3+/Sm3+phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction followed by heat treatment at 450–600 °C. As shown by X-ray powder diffraction, the phosphors had a body-centered tetragonal structure, high phase purity and high crystallinity. The photoluminescence measurements carried out under excitation at 464 nm indicated the main emission at about 615 nm corresponding to the electric dipole transition5D0→7F2of Eu3+, which agreed well with the emission wavelengths of the GaN-based blue LED chips. In NaLa(MoO4)2:Eu3+/Sm3+phosphors, Sm3+can efficiently transfer excitation energy to Eu3+, which resulted in a significant improvement of the fluorescence intensity, and the fluorescence intensity of the phosphors calcined at 550 °C maximized at the doping concentrations of Eu3+and Sm3+of 15.0 and 2.0 mol %, respectively. The decay curves and CIE (Commission Internationale de L’ Eclairage) coordinates of Sm3+or/and Eu3+doped phosphors were analyzed for the investigation of the energy transfer mechanism and color variation trend. Thus, NaLa(MoO4)2:Eu3+,Sm3+can be classified as a potential red-emitting phosphor for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs).Keywords:luminescence properties;molybdate;red-emitting phosphor;energy transfer

Lattice Site Engineering and Photoluminescence Tuning in Yb3+ and Ho3+ codoped NaY(MoO4)2 Single Crystal via Alkali-Ion Substitution

Shoujun Ding,Kaiming Kan,Shujing Pan,Wenzhi Su,Yong Zou,Qingli Zhang

Yb 3+ and Ho 3+ co-doped AB(MoO 4 ) 2 (A = Na, Li, K; B = Y or Bi) single crystals were successfully grown by the Czochralski method, and the effects of Li + and K + doping on the structural and optical properties of NaY(MoO 4 ) 2 (NYM) crystals were systematically investigated. The crystals confirmed with zircon-type tetragonal structure (space group 4). First-principle calculations revealed the band structure features of NYM crystals and elucidated the differences in bandgap and oxygen defect formation compared with NaBi(MoO 4 ) 2 (NBM). Judd-Ofelt calculations were conducted and the spectral transition properties of Ho 3+ were revealed. Photoluminescence studies demonstrated that the crystals exhibited high-purity red down-conversion emission under 450 nm excitation and typical two-photon up-conversion green emission under 980 nm excitation. Li + /K + doping effectively suppressed the green emission and enhanced the red component, with a more pronounced effect for K + . Temperature-dependent spectra (300-540 K) indicated good repeatability and thermal stability, with the K + -doped crystal retaining 55% of its room-temperature emission intensity at 540 K. The activation energies derived from temperature-dependent spectra suggest that Li + and K + incorporation significantly improved thermal stability. Furthermore, optical thermometry analysis revealed that Li + and K + doping significantly enhanced the optical sensing sensitivity. Fluorescence decay curves suggested that Li + and K + doping increased lattice disorder, suppressed Ho 3+ -Ho 3+ cross-relaxation, and consequently modified the red-to-green emission ratio. These results indicate that Yb,Ho:NYM crystals and their Li + /K + -doped counterparts exhibit outstanding performance in optical anti-counterfeiting, near-infrared solid-state lasers and optical thermometry applications.
