Catalyst–Support Interaction in Polyaniline-Supported Ni3Fe Oxide to Boost Oxygen Evolution Activities for Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Zou Xiaohong,Lu Qian,Tang Mingcong,Wu Jie,Zhang Kouer,Li Wenzhi,Hu Yunxia,Xu Xiaomin,Zhang Xiao,Shao Zongping,An Liang

Ni 3 Fe oxide, with an average size of 3.5 ± 1.5 nm, was successfully deposited onto polyaniline (PANI) support through a solvothermal strategy followed by calcination. The catalyst–support interaction between Ni 3 Fe oxide and PANI can enhance the Ni-O covalency via the interfacial Ni-N bond. Ni 3 Fe oxide/PANI-assembled Zn-air batteries achieve superior cycling life for over 400 h at 10 mA cm −2 and a low charge potential of around 1.95 V.

Rapid Electrical-Field-Enhanced Corrosion Endows Ni3Fe/NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets with High-Rate Oxygen Evolution Activity

Wenxin Zhao,Ke Wang,Shaokang Yang,Huxiao Wang,Denghui Zhang,Zhenyuan Zhang,Haoyu Wang,Tianyi Kou

We demonstrate a rapid electrical-field-enhanced corrosion strategy in synthesizing Ni3Fe/NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets within 200 s for high-rate (>400 mA cm–2) oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Theoretical calculations suggest that the hybrids have high intrinsic activity with decreased energy barriers, while visualization experiments confirm facilitated bubble detachment. The composite shows competing performances with the overpotential of 283.3 ± 6.1 mV at 1000 mA cm–2. The anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer employing this anode and Pt/C cathode can achieve 1000 mA cm–2 at 2.0 V. This work exemplifies an efficacious strategy in rapidly realizing NiFe-based anodes for high-rate OER.

Hollow N-doped carbon nanofiber confined Ru/Ni3Fe@C core-shell heterostructures for boosted alkaline overall water splitting

Yaru Li,Jun wang,Yaojin Duan,Tao Jin,Yukun Bai,Haoran Shi,Ihar Razanau,Yongpeng Ren,Kunming Pan

Ru-decorated graphitic carbon-encapsulated Ni₃Fe particles are embedded in hollow carbon nanofibers as an electrocatalyst. • Graphitic carbon enhances alloy conductivity and hollow porous CNFs facilitate electrolyte penetration and bubble detachment. • Ru nanoparticles reconstruct electronic structure and optimize HER/OER intermediate Gibbs free energies. • The Ru/Ni₃Fe@C/CNF composite accelerates both OER and HER kinetics and achieves outstanding long‑term catalytic stability. Nickel‑iron intermetallic Ni 3 Fe represents a low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, yet sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, severe particle aggregation and inferior alkaline stability greatly limit its bifunctional water-splitting application. Hierarchical hollow N-doped carbon nanofiber supported Ru/Ni 3 Fe@C core-shell heterostructures (Ru/Ni 3 Fe@C/CNF) are fabricated via coaxial electrospinning, high-temperature carbonization and liquid-phase Ru reduction. Hollow N-doped carbon nanofibers serve as conductive porous scaffolds, where graphitic carbon shells encapsulate Ni 3 Fe nanoparticles and evenly dispersed Ru nanoparticles form heterointerfaces for electronic regulation. Characterizations confirm carbon-triggered Ni 3 Fe lattice expansion, strong Ru-Ni/Fe charge transfer, and in-situ formation of NiOOH/FeOOH active sites under OER conditions. Electrochemical measurements in 1 M KOH deliver 61 mV HER and 240 mV OER overpotentials at 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming Ni 3 Fe@C/CNF and commercial Pt/C/RuO 2 . Elevated double-layer capacitances (38.9 mF cm −2 for HER, 37.3 mF cm −2 for OER) and lowered charge transfer resistance demonstrate abundant exposed active sites. Benefiting from carbon confinement, 83% and 80% initial activity are maintained after 40 h HER and OER operation, respectively. The symmetric electrolyzer attains a low cell voltage of 1.64 V at 10 mA cm −2 with 92% activity retention over 100 h. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations confirm combined carbon encapsulation and Ru decoration upshift Ni 3 Fe d-band center, reduce water dissociation barrier to 0.46 eV and balance H ⁎ /OOH ⁎ adsorption to accelerate catalytic kinetics. This work develops an integrated interface engineering strategy for high-efficiency durable non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts. The catalyst consists of Ru nanoparticles decorated on graphitic carbon-encapsulated Ni 3 Fe alloy nanoparticles embedded in hollow porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs). Benefiting from its optimized electronic structure, boosted charge transfer capability, and favorable structural stability, the Ru/Ni 3 Fe@C/CNF catalyst demonstrates impressive dual functionality in both OER and HER. Well-dispersed Ni3Fe nanoparticles with a N-doped porous carbon shell for highly efficient rechargeable Zn–air batteries

Yuemei Liu,Junhong Ma,Tuan K. A. Hoang,Lijing Yang,Zhaohui Chen

NiFe-based nanoparticles attached to heteroatom-doped carbon are found to act as tremendously efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Nevertheless, it is extremely challenging to control the particle size and avoid aggregation. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated Ni3Fe nanoparticles (Ni3Fe@NC) are prepared by two-stage pyrolysis with a low rate based on the in situ structural evolution of FeNi-PBAs. The strategy results in uniform Ni3Fe nanoparticles anchoring within the carbon shell and thus facilitating interfacial interaction. Benefiting from the enhanced synergism between Ni3Fe particles and NC layers, Ni3Fe@NC-600 demonstrates the best catalytic activity and durability, not only with almost the same onset potential (1.01 V) as commercial Pt/C for the ORR but also satisfactory OER performance with a low overpotential of 0.29 V at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.1 M KOH. Moreover, the Zn–air battery assembled using the Ni3Fe@NC-600 cathode exhibits superior performance to commercial Pt/C + RuO2. The simple and scalable method of this work provides insight into the fabrication of high-performance and cost-effective bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

A “three birds with one stone” strategy: Ni3Fe-decorated carbonized wood composites for high-performance and multifunctional electromagnetic interference shielding

Wei Min,Fan Haobo,Yu Fanjun,Qiu Zhe,Xiao Zefang,Zhang Tianpeng,Xie Yanjun

The rapid growth of electronic devices has intensified electromagnetic wave (EMW) pollution, creating an urgent demand for sustainable and multifunctional shielding materials. Here, we present a novel “three birds with one stone” strategy involving Ni 3 Fe-induced three-in-one modification for carbonized wood/epoxy composite electromagnetic interference shielding material. Specifically, by encapsulating Ni 3 Fe nanoparticles in carbonized wood/epoxy composite materials through a facile impregnation-carbonization approach, the composite material (Ni 3 Fe-EP-carbonized wood composite) achieves enhanced conductive and reflective losses through catalytic graphitization, promotes interfacial polarization via abundant heterojunctions, and incorporates intrinsic magnetic dissipation capabilities. Meanwhile, leveraging the natural microstructure advantages of wood, the well-tailored Ni 3 Fe-EP-carbonized wood composite achieves a shielding effectiveness of 59.88 dB (2.6 times higher than pristine CW), in the X-band at a density of merely 0.193 g cm -3 . Furthermore, owing to the elevated electrical conductivity and unique layered porous structure of carbonized wood that absorbs sunlight strongly, Ni 3 Fe-EP-carbonized wood composite exhibits a suite of multifunctional properties, including stable heat conduction and effective photothermal conversion up to 55 °C under low solar irradiance (100 mW cm -2 ). This work offers a novel perspective on an environmentally friendly wood-based electromagnetic interference shielding material design.

Three-dimensional Ni/Ni3Fe embedded boron-doped carbon nanotubes nanochain frameworks as highly efficient and durable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Manigandan Ramadoss,Yuanfu Chen,Yang Hu,Wenxin Li,Bin Wang,Xiaojuan Zhang,Xinqiang Wang,Bo Yu

The electrocatalytic water splitting is still seriously hindered by the sluggish reaction kinetics, large overpotential, and high cost of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst . To address such issues, herein, for the first time, three-dimensional porous Ni/Ni 3 Fe anchored boron-doped carbon nanotubes nanochain frameworks (Ni/Ni 3 Fe/B-CNT), constructed by ultrasmall Ni/Ni 3 Fe nanoparticles embedded in highly conductive B-doped CNT chains, are synthesized via a facile self-assembly hydrolysis method and corresponding growth mechanism is revealed. The low-cost Ni/Ni 3 Fe/B-CNT hybrid delivers excellent OER performance outperforming that of well-established benchmark electrocatalysts (RuO 2 ): it requires only 265 mV to obtain a large current density of 10 mA cm −2 (mass load ~ 0.28 mg cm −2 ); it shows a small Tafel slope of 62.9 mV dec −1 and excellent long-term stability even after 40 h. The outstanding OER performance of Ni/Ni 3 Fe/B-CNT is mainly attributed to its unique porous nanoarchitecture with abundant active sites and the synergistic effect between the ultrathin Ni/Ni 3 Fe nanoparticles and highly conductive B-doped CNT skeleton; these merits facilitate the electron/ion transfer and oxygen bubble release thus significantly improve its OER activity. This work presents a well-designed nanoarchitecture design and facile fabrication strategy to obtain nonprecious transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts with excellent efficiency and long-term stability.

Coupling thulium 4f orbitals with Ni3Fe LDH loaded with Pt to form an electronic buffer band for catalyzing alkaline overall water splitting

Xinping Yang,Shucheng Li,Yan Zhang,Fagui Qiu,Yanbin Sun,Weikun Ning,Qinglong Tao,Wenqing Li,Shiding Miao

Nickel–iron layered bimetallic hydroxides (Ni3Fe LDHs) are regarded as excellent materials for electrodes for electrolyzing water but still require high overpotentials because of their weak adsorption/desorption of oxygen intermediates by metal–oxygen bonding (M–O). Herein, the rare earth element thulium (Tm) was selected for incorporation into Ni3Fe LDH owing to its particular electronic structure of 4f136s2, and the composite LDH was regulated using an electron-compensated buffer to avoid the overoxidation of M–O and was proven to be an excellent OER electrocatalyst. By further loading platinum (Pt) on the Tm-doped LDH (Ni3Fe LDH/NiFe2O4/Pt–Tm), the HER performance was also found to be greatly improved, and overall water splitting catalysts could be constructed utilizing the two types of Ni3Fe LDH-based materials. The state-of-the-art optimized Ni3Fe LDH/NiFe2O4/Pt–Tm composite in 1.0 M KOH solution achieved an OER overpotential as low as 224.0 mV at a current density of 10.0 mA cm−2, which was one of the lowest among previously reported LDHs, with a Tafel slope of 54.81 mV dec−1 and a turnover frequency (0.1969 s−1). For HER catalysis, Ni3Fe LDH/NiFe2O4/Pt–Tm exhibited an even lower overpotential of 125.0 mV (vs. 238.0 mV for bare Ni3Fe LDH) at 10.0 mA cm−2, and only 1.69 V was required to drive overall water splitting. The electrocatalytic stability was evaluated for 5000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry scanning and chronoamperometry tests. Raman and XPS spectra confirmed that structural regulation promoted the generation of NiOOH and the adsorption of intermediates. In particular, oxygen vacancies and unsaturated ligands were preserved, providing abundant active sites for electrocatalysis.

Scalable one-step electrochemical deposition of nanoporous amorphous S-doped NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe composite films as highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution with ultrahigh stability

M. Y. Gao,J. R. Zeng,Q. B. Zhang,C. Yang,X. T. Li,Y. X. Hua,C. Y. Xu

The rational design of noble metal-free electrocatalysts that are highly active, robustly stable, and capable of delivering large current densities (>500 mA cm−2) at low applied potentials (<300 mV), in particular for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is critical for practical use in electro-driven water-splitting devices. Herein, we report a facile scalable and one-step electrochemical deposition approach for the development of a self-supported 3D nanoporous S-doped amorphous NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe composite electrode with outstanding OER electrocatalytic activity and robust durability in alkaline media. Benefiting from the 3D nanoporous architectures and their in situ growth on a highly conductive substrate, the novel S-doped NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe composite electrode offers an ideal platform for fast electron transport and efficient mass transport. It also provides abundant active surface area as well as accessible active sites for a catalytic reaction. Impressively, the S-doped composite electrode displays superior OER activity in 1.0 M KOH that compares favorably with the state-of-the-art RuO2 catalyst. Low overpotentials of 260 and 285 mV (iR corrected) are required to reach long-term stable current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm−2 for OER, respectively. The electrolyzer cell obtained by pairing this S-doped composite electrode as an anode with a Ni–Mo based cathode for overall water-splitting works efficiently in both 1.0 M (1.52 V for 10 mA cm−2 and 1.79 V for 100 mA cm−2) and 30 wt% KOH (1.69 V for 100 mA cm−2) solutions, with long durability for over 220 h. Such catalyst couple exhibits superior catalytic performance and holds great promise for potential application in electrochemical water splitting.

Ni and F Co-doped A-site Deficient Perovskite Nanofibers with Enhanced Catalytic Performance for CO/CO2 Atmospheres in Reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Kai Ma,Yao Luo,Jietao Wang,Xu Chang,Tong Liu,Yao Wang,Mingyue Ding

Developing robust fuel electrodes with high catalytic activity and stability under CO/CO 2 atmospheres is critical for reversible solid oxide fuel cells (RSOFCs). Here, we report a novel A-site-deficient perovskite Sr 1.95 Fe 1.5 Mo 0.3 Ni 0.2 F 0.1 O 6-δ (SFMNF) synthesized via electrospinning, combining Ni 2+ (B-site cation) and F - (anion) co-doping to enhance CO 2 electrolysis and syngas oxidation performance. Physicochemical characterization reveals that F-doping lowers the crystallization temperature, increases oxygen vacancy concentration, and strengthens CO 2 chemisorption. Reduction under H 2 induces exsolution of Ni 3 Fe alloy nanoparticles. The SFMNF electrode achieves a current density of 233 mA cm -2 at 1.3 V and 750°C in CO:CO 2 =2:1 atmosphere, with 36.2% higher activity than the pre-reduced state. Electrochemical impedance and distribution of relaxation time analyses identify CO 2 adsorption/dissociation as the rate-limiting step. The cell demonstrates exceptional durability over 50 redox cycles and 85-hour of operation without carbon deposition. This work highlights dual doping as an effective strategy to tailor perovskite properties for efficient CO 2 utilization in RSOFCs.
