Influence of P(VDF-TrFE) Membranes with Different Surface Potentials on the Activity and Angiogenic Function of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

Yan Xu,Mingwei Cheng,Peijun Zhu,Shuo Yang,Chunhua Lai,Shulan Xu

During bone tissue regeneration, neovascularization is critical, and the formation of a blood supply network is crucial for bone growth stimulation and remodeling. Previous studies suggest that bioelectric signals facilitate the process of angiogenesis. Owing to their biomimetic electroactivity, piezoelectric membranes have garnered substantial interest in the field of guided bone regeneration. Nevertheless, the knowledge of their influence due to varying surface potentials on the progression of angiogenesis remains ambiguous. Therefore, we proposed the preparation of an electroactive material, P(VDF-TrFE), and investigated its effects on the activity and angiogenic functions of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The HUVECs were directly cultured on P(VDF-TrFE) membranes with different surface potentials. Subsequently, cell viability, proliferation, migration, tube formation, and expressions of related factors were assessed through appropriate assays. Our results revealed that the negative surface potential groups exerted differential effects on the modulation of angiogenesis in vitro. The P(VDF-TrFE) membranes with negative surface potential exhibited the greatest effect on cellular behaviors, including proliferation, migration, tube formation, and promotion of angiogenesis by releasing key factors such as VEGF-A and CD31. Overall, these results indicated that the surface potential of piezoelectric P(VDF-TrFE) membranes could exert differential effects on angiogenesis in vitro. We present a novel approach for designing bioactive materials for guided bone regeneration.

Electrical Stimulations Generated by P(VDF-TrFE) Films Enhance Adhesion Forces and Odontogenic Differentiation of Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs)

Danle Lin,Ziyu Zhou,Mengdan Zhang,Songyou Yao,Lingling Yuan,Meng Xu,Xiaoyue Zhang,Xiaoli Hu

Biophysical and biochemical cues of biomaterials can regulate cell behaviors. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in pulp tissues can differentiate to odontoblast-like cells and secrete reparative dentin to form a barrier to protect the underlying pulp tissues and enable complete pulp healing. Promotion of the odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs is essential for dentin regeneration. The effects of the surface potentials of biomaterials on the adhesion and odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs remain unclear. Here, poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoro ethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) films with different surface potentials were prepared by the spin-coating technique and the contact poling method. The cytoskeletal organization of DPSCs grown on P(VDF-TrFE) films was studied by immunofluorescence staining. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the lateral detachment forces of DPSCs from P(VDF-TrFE) films were quantified. The effects of electrical stimulation generated from P(VDF-TrFE) films on odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The unpolarized, positively polarized, and negatively polarized films had surface potentials of −52.9, +902.4, and −502.2 mV, respectively. DPSCs on both negatively and positively polarized P(VDF-TrFE) films had larger cell areas and length-to-width ratios than those on the unpolarized films (P < 0.05). During the detachment of DPSCs from P(VDF-TrFE) films, the average magnitudes of the maximum detachment forces were 29.4, 72.1, and 53.9 nN for unpolarized, positively polarized, and negatively polarized groups, respectively (P < 0.05). The polarized films enhanced the mineralization activities and increased the expression levels of the odontogenic-related proteins of DPSCs compared to the unpolarized films (P < 0.05). The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway was involved in the odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs as induced by surface charge. In vivo, the polarized P(VDF-TrFE) films enhanced adhesion of DPSCs and promoted the odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs by electrical stimulation, demonstrating a potential application of electroactive biomaterials for reparative dentin formation in direct pulp capping.

A (Ba0.94Ca0.06)(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O3 ceramic sheet doping to improve the inverse piezoelectric effect of the poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)-based composite film

Yufan Ping,Weimin Xia,Jiahong Zhou,Xiaofang Zhang,Zhong Li

A lead-free tetragonal-phase (Ba 0.94 Ca 0.06 )(Ti 0.95 Zr 0.05 )O 3 (BCTZ) micro sheet is prepared by molten-salt growth method, which exhibits a polarizing behavior of relaxor ferroelectricity and possesses a high dielectric constant ( ε r ) of ~2400. Subsequently, the BCTZ sheet is evenly doped into ferroelectric copolymer P(VDF-TrFE)55/45 mol% with different mass fractions, and the flexible BCTZ/P(VDF-TrFE) composite films are prepared using a conventional solution casting process. ε r of BCTZ/P(VDF-TrFE) increases with the mass content of BCTZ, and reaches 23.8 in 20 wt% BCTZ sample. Meanwhile, at a high electrical field of 30 MV/m, the strain and electric field of BCTZ/P(VDF-TrFE) are in the opposite direction, indicating a negative value of piezoelectric strain coefficient ( d 33 ) caused by inverse piezoelectric effect. In addition, d 33 of different BCTZ/P(VDF-TrFE) films are fitted using a strain-electrical field curve, which firstly increases and then decreases with increases in BCTZ content. As such, a high d 33 of −47.3 pC/N is obtained in BCTZ/P(VDF-TrFE)15/85 wt% film. Thus, this research concerning the inverse piezoelectric effect may provide a reference for designing a piezoelectric composite using in transducers and actuators.

Dynamic hysteresis scaling behavior in polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene ferroelectric copolymer thin films

Xu Lingfang,Song Minghang,Yi Wenjun,Fang Hanshuo,Wang Ruilong,Liang Shiheng,Xiao Haibo,Yang Changping

In this paper, we investigated the dependence of dynamic hysteresis on the electric field amplitude E 0 and the frequency f in organic ferroelectric copolymer polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene [P(VDF-TrFE)] thin films prepared by a spin-coating method on fluorine-doped tin oxide conductive glass. Three stages can be observed of the hysteresis area vs the field strength E 0 . In stage I of low E 0 values, the area ⟨ A ⟩ dependent on E 0 follows the law of ⟨ A ⟩ ∝ E 0 1.92795 , whereas the diverse distribution of the area ⟨ A ⟩ with frequency f is found. In stage II of the intermediate E 0 values, ⟨ A ⟩ ∝ E 0 β is not applicable owing to collective contributions between 180° domain and chiral domain, while a relation of ⟨ A ⟩ ∝ f − 0.18636 can be deduced, a fascinating characteristic distinguishing from the nonlinear relations of the inorganics in this section. In stage III of high E 0 values, the scaling law is ⟨ A ⟩ ∝ f 0.08447 E 0 0.49394 where the chiral domain is active. The positive β in the law of ⟨ A ⟩ ∝ f α E 0 β illustrates that a growing number of chiral domains in P(VDF-TrFE) can keep pace with the variation of E 0 . Especially, the negative α in the transition zone, resembling some inorganics under low electric fields, probably indicates 180° domain reversal failing to follow with the alternating velocity of the increasing periodic electric field.

Construction and Evaluation of P(VDF-TrFE) Nanofiber-Clustered Surfaces

Yuhan Bao,Kefan Li,Siyuan Fan,Shangyong Zuo,Xuzhao He,Wenjian Weng,Xingyan Yu,Yaoting He,Chengwei Wu,Kui Cheng

HighlightsTemplate molding created nanofiber-clustered structures on P(VDF-TrFE) films.Poled films exhibited enhanced piezoelectric response and surface potential.Poled films promoted BMSC adhesion, proliferation, and ALP activity.Topographical and electrical changes were linked to cell–material interactions.Surface morphology and electrical characteristics are key factors affecting cell–material interactions on electroactive polymer films, but their coupled effects remain unclear. In this study, P(VDF-TrFE) nanofiber-clustered films were fabricated using an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template-assisted molding method, and their surface electrical properties were subsequently tailored by corona poling. The nanofibrous structure was formed without substantially disrupting the characteristic polar β phase. Compared with the planar film, the water contact angle (WCA) of the nanofiber-clustered film increased from 74.8° to 132.5°, indicating markedly enhanced hydrophobicity. Furthermore, corona poling increased the magnitude of the piezoelectric coefficient (|d33|) and altered the surface potential state. Protein adsorption and cell studies further showed that polarized nanofiber-clustered surfaces exhibited greater protein adsorption, more extensive cell spreading, and higher CCK-8 signals and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. These results indicate that the biological interfacial response of P(VDF-TrFE) films is regulated by surface morphology, wettability, and polarization-induced electrical characteristics. This work provides insight into the combined roles of nanofiber-clustered topography and electrical characteristics in regulating cell-material interactions on P(VDF-TrFE) surfaces.

Guo Tian,Liang Tang,Jieling Zhang,Shenglong Wang,Yue Sun,Yong Ao,Tao Yang,Da Xiong,Hongrui Zhang,Boling Lan,Lin Deng,Weili Deng,Weiqing Yang

Ultrathin epidermal piezoelectric sensors are essential in the next generation of wearable flexible electronics due to their conformal contact with the skin. However, the fabrication and peeling of ultrathin film still face great challenges, and there is an urgent need to develop a facile and effective process. Here, we propose a method of combing spin-coating and aqueous phase exfoliating to prepare the ultrathin poly(vinylidene fluoride-ran-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) piezoelectric film with a thickness of about 3 μm. And the thermal treatment is employed to improve its crystallinity and piezoelectricity, resulting in the piezoelectric coefficient of 11.67 pC N–1 and fine sensitivity of 4.56 mV kPa–1. The ultrathin device is successfully applied to monitor the signals of arterial pulse and interactive force, which is expected to provide references for medical diagnosis and robot design. Notably, this work might motivate design principles and methods of ultrathin epidermal devices and promote its applications in wearable flexible electronics.

Flexible Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Filter Based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene)

Xiangyu He,Jiaqi Lu,Feng Gao,Shurong Dong,Juan Li,Hao Jin,Jikui Luo

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) has promising potential applications in radio-frequency filters due to their excellent piezoelectric properties, flexibility, and stability. In this paper, a flexible film bulk acoustic wave filter is investigated based on P(VDF-TrFE) as piezoelectric film. A new method based on three-step annealing is developed to efficiently remove the porosity inside the P(VDF-TrFE) films so as to improve its properties. The obtained film achieved high β-phase content beyond 80% and a high piezoelectric coefficient of 27.75 pm/V. Based on the low porosity β-phase films, a flexible wide-band RF filter is designed, which consists of a bulk acoustic wave resonator and lumped inductor-capacitor elements as a hybrid configuration. The resonator sets the filter’s center frequency, while the lumped LC-based matching network extends the bandwidth and enhances out-of-band rejection. The testing results of the proposed wide-band filter show its good performance, with 12.5% fractional bandwidth and an insertion loss of 3.1 dB. To verify the possibility of folding and stacking the flexible bulk acoustic wave devices for high-density multi-filter integration in MIMO communication, bending tests of the filter are also conducted with the bending strain range up to 5500 με. The testing results show no noticeable performance degradation after four bending cycles. This work demonstrates the potential of β-phase P(VDF-TrFE) bulk acoustic wave filters to expand the scope of future flexible radio-frequency filter applications.

Piezoelectric sensing performance of flexible P(VDF-TrFE)/PBDMS porous polymer materials

Zhenji Zhou,Caiyin You,Yao Chen,Weimin Xia,Na Tian,Yun Li,ChuKai Wang

Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene [P(VDF-TrFE)] polymer materials possess good piezoelectric properties , leading to their use in many practical applications as sensors and transducers. However, pure P(VDF-TrFE) exhibits relatively brittle properties and low thermal resistance . In this work, porous P(VDF-TrFE)/PBDMS flexible materials were designed by embedding a low Young's modulus polyborosiloxane (PBDMS) into the [P(VDF-TrFE)] structure. These P(VDF-TrFE)/PBDMS porous polymer materials exhibit excellent flexibility and piezoelectric response to external stimuli such as bending, shock, vibration, and breathing. The output voltage of these polymer materials can be maintained at a high value of 8.25 V over 6600 cycles of continuous vibration. In addition, the porous polymer materials generate a transient voltage response when in contact with small droplets of water at different temperatures. This work provides a novel approach for designing lightweight and wearable piezoelectric sensors for potential applications in human motion monitoring, mechanical vibration monitoring, and pyroelectric devices.

Enhanced Radiative Cooling Performance in P(VDF-TrFE) Copolymer Based on Phononic Properties

Ziman Wang,Ming Yang,Ziyi Wang,Xinyu Wang,Hang Zhang

Passive radiative cooling technology is realized by increasing solar reflection and infrared emission. Polymer materials demonstrate greater potential in multi-scenario cooling applications due to their excellent flexibility and manufacturability. Intrinsic characteristic modification is crucial for enhancing the performance of materials. Here, the radiative cooling properties of PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) with different C─F content are evaluated. Theoretical studies based on first-principles calculations are conducted to understand the screening of chemical bonds from phonon dispersions. Then the optical performances are tested, with P(VDF-TrFE) showing an enhanced net cooling power of 41% and 21% during daytime and nighttime, respectively. On-site measurements have also been conducted. Compared to PVDF, the average cooling temperature drops of P(VDF-TrFE) increase from 7.2 to 8.5 °C at noon and from 2.1 to 3.5 °C at night. This work successfully bridges atomic-scale characteristics with material-level radiative performance, providing a reference for finding effective radiative cooling materials through phononic properties.

Patchable Transparent Standalone Piezoelectric P(VDF-TrFE) Film for Radial Artery Pulse Detection

Yian Hu,Shunyao Huang,Yujia Gao,Jaeyeon Lee,Zhangsiyuan Jin,Geon-Hyoung An,Yuljae Cho

Wearable or patchable biosensors have attracted tremendous attention due to their continuous health-monitoring capabilities. In particular, self-powered passive biosensors based on a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) have demonstrated measurements of physiological signals from which cardiovascular information can be analyzed such as heart rate and blood pressure. However, challenges still remain with regard to both material and device aspects. For the effective and accurate measurement of extremely weak physiological signals, various methods have been introduced, including employment of inorganic lead-based piezoelectric materials and design of a complex material or device structure. In spite of their effectiveness in enhancing the piezoelectric output response, the introduced methods brought concomitant issues, such as toxicity and complexity. We present unique methods to produce a transparent standalone piezoelectric polymer film which can be directly transferred to any surface such as the human skin. Through a room temperature solvent vapor annealing process, we further enhance the crystallinity and a portion of the ferroelectric β-phase of the transparent standalone polymer film, resulting in an improved piezoelectric output response. Based on these two new methods introduced, we demonstrate a simple sandwich-structured, transparent, and patchable biosensor based on PENG for radial artery detection with significantly reduced complex manufacturing processes, providing great practical value.

Enhanced electrocaloric effect within a broad temperature range in lead-free polymer composite films by blending the rare-earth doped BaTiO3 nanopowders

Wang Ziman,Gao Yin,Ma Yu,Xie Xixi,Yang Ming,Zhang Hang

This paper investigates the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in polymer nanocomposite films containing ferroelectric poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)] terpolymer matrix and lead-free nanopowders. The nanopowders include pure BaTiO 3 and rare-earth substituted Ba 0.94 R 0.04 TiO 3 , where R  = La, Nd, Sm, prepared by a modified sol-hydrothermal method. The substitution influences the lattice parameters, but all samples exhibit a perovskite-type tetragonal phase. The dopant enhances the relaxation behavior of the matrix and decreases the current. Using the Maxwell equations, the ECE performance is systematically studied for all samples. As the rare-earth ionic radius decreases, the Curie temperature of the nanocomposite increases and the dielectric constant decreases. The isothermal entropy changes (Δ S ), adiabatic temperature changes (Δ T ), cooling energy densities ( Q ), and electrocaloric strengths versus temperature exhibit different dependences on electric field ( E ). The results demonstrate that rare-earth doping can effectively modify the ECE. Our composites achieve large EC strength values (|Δ T |/|Δ E |) of 7 to 21 μK m kV −1 over a wide temperature range of 25 to 60 °C and electric field range of 750 to 1250 kV cm −1 and provide typical examples of polymer ECE materials containing rare-earth doped nanopowders. Graphical abstract The preparation of the polymer nanocomposites and the adiabatic temperature changes and the corresponding electrocaloric strengths of the samples.

Regulable surface potential of MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) electrospun membranes promotes BMSCs osteogenic differentiation

Na Qiang,Tao Zhu,Lihong Huang,Wenlong Zhang,Peishi Hu,Jiayi Lu,Xuefeng Zhang,Qingyun Tang,Guocong Liu,Qiang Lin,Shuo Tang

Bone tissue engineering requires biomaterials capable of bionically simulating the physiological electro-microenvironment of natural bone to regulate osteogenic cell behavior. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) electroactive nanocomposite membranes with tunable surface potential were successfully fabricated via electrospinning technology. The microstructure, crystal phase composition, thermal stability, piezoelectric performance, and electrical conductivity of the composite membranes were systematically characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy (Raman), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) measurements, and surface resistance tests. XRD, FTIR, and Raman characterizations confirmed that MXene acted as a nucleating agent, which inhibited the formation of the α-phase of P(VDF-TrFE) and promoted the generation of the ferroelectric β-phase. Piezoelectric and electrical property tests demonstrated that MXene doping significantly enhanced the piezoelectric performance and electrical conductivity of the composite membranes. Specifically, the d33 value of the composite membrane with 2.0 wt% MXene reached 5.4 pC/N. Moreover, the surface resistance of MXene-doped membranes was drastically reduced from 230.0 mΩ (for the pure P(VDF-TrFE) membrane) to ∼24–25 mΩ, constructing an efficient charge transport pathway. Consequently, the MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) membranes facilitated cell adhesion, stretching, and proliferation, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility. Meanwhile, cells cultured on the composite membranes displayed enhanced spreading and improved cytoskeletal organization. Further osteogenic assessments revealed that MXene-containing substrates effectively promoted osteogenic differentiation at both the early and late stages, as well as enhanced the formation of mineralized extracellular matrix. These findings suggest that MXene incorporation provides a favorable microenvironment for directing the osteogenic differentiation of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMSCs). The fabricated MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite membranes possess a biomimetic microenvironment with sustainable electric potential and optimal topographical structure, offering an innovative and well-suited strategy for applications in bone regeneration.
