Enhancing the limited utilization and overall yield of Pt-based catalysts is essential for advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cell technology. Herein, we report a facile one-pot method that utilizes TEG as both a solvent and a reductant to efficiently synthesize a Pd@Pt core-shell icosahedron. By controlling the surface energy between Pd and Pt precursors, we achieved the formation of Pd@Pt core-shell icosahedra, resulting in a fourfold reduction in reaction time and an eightfold increase in yield. Moreover, the core-shell structures exhibited a significant enhancement in electrocatalytic activity, stability, and Pt utilization efficiency. In comparison to commercial Pt/C, the Pd@Pt core-shell icosahedron exhibited efficient mass activity (MA, 1.54 A mg−1Pt) and specific activity (SA, 2.24 mA cm−2Pt) at 0.9 V (vs. RHE), while demonstrating excellent stability with minimal loss of activity even after 10,000 potential cycles. The Pd@Pt icosahedra configuration integrates the advantages of multiply twinned nanostructures, leading to rich electrochemical active surface sites and fast charge transport, thereby improving its catalytic performance and long-term stability during electrocatalytic reactions.

Combining noble metal nanoparticles with electron acceptors, such as semiconductors or non-plasmonic metals, significantly enhances photocatalytic performance. However, optimizing multi-material combinations for superior catalytic efficiency remains challenging. In this study, we present a method for synthesizing composite structures by reducing Cu 2+ ions with hydrazine hydrate, forming gold nanorods (AuNRs) decorated with dendritic Cu 2 O shells. The influence of CTAB on Cu 2 O deposition sites was investigated, and ternary composite nanoparticles were further synthesized by incorporating Pd or Pt into the AuNR-Cu 2 O system (AuNR@Pd(Pt)-Cu 2 O). The photocatalytic performance of these nanostructures was evaluated by catalyzing methyl orange (MO) under light irradiation. Results showed that AuNR@Pt-Cu 2 O nanoparticles exhibited catalytic performance 35.7 times higher than that of pure Cu 2 O nanoparticles. This enhancement is attributed to efficient charge transfer and photothermal effects facilitated by the ternary structure. These findings provide valuable insights into plasmonic heterostructure design and open new avenues for developing high-performance photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

Bimetallic Pd-Pt nanoflowers (Pd-Pt NFs) of varying sizes (20–60 nm) were synthesized through the concurrent reduction of Pd(NO 3 ) 2 and K 2 PtCl 4 using Cinnamomum camphora ( C. camphora ) leaf extract assisted by ascorbic acid (AA). C.Camphora acted as both a co-reducing agent and a green template in the synthesis protocol providing a fast, simple, green and cost-effective means of producing the Pd-Pt NFs. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to confirm the Pd-Pt NFs formation. FT-IR analysis showed that biomolecules such as polyphenols and flavonoids were responsible for the reduction while stretching vibration bands from C H, C C , O H, and C O O acted as capping agents. The as-formed Pd-Pt NFs showed excellent performance and stability in the electro-oxidation of ethanol in alkaline media. Electro-catalytic performance increased with Pt content, while addition of Pd increased stability. The PdPt 3 NFs presented the best performance with a mass activity of 1.43 A mg −1 metal , 5.72, 4.93, 2.27, 1.27, 11 and 4.6% higher than the Pd, Pt, Pd 3 Pt, and PdPt NFs, and commercial Pt and Pd-black respectively. However, it was more prone to poisoning, with an I f /I r value of 0.78 compared to 1.37 for Pd 3 Pt NFs.

Pd–Pt nanodendrites were synthesized by a facile, environment-friendly, one-pot wet-chemical method, without using any seed, template, or toxic organic solvent. The as-obtained bimetallic nanocrystals exhibited efficient catalytic activity toward ligand-free Suzuki cross-coupling reaction in ethanol aqueous solution. A series of biphenyl compounds were obtained with high yields under mild conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused at least 6 consecutive cycles, nearly without losing its catalytic activity.

Pd@Pt nanozymes are recognized for their extensive specific surface area and enzyme-like catalytic capabilities. However, the role of Pd@Pt nanoparticles in managing metabolic disorders such as diabetes and its related disorders remains poorly understood. This study endeavors to explore the regulatory function of Pd@Pt nanoparticles in metabolic balance, elucidating the associated mechanisms. We demonstrate that Pd@Pt inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and modulates oxidative stress through its superoxide-dismutase-like enzyme activity in palmitic-acid-induced insulin resistance cell model. Furthermore, Pd@Pt was found to enhance glucose uptake, reduce hyperglycemia, and improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, attributable to its anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, the effectiveness of the multifunctional Pd@Pt-based microneedle in expediting the healing of diabetic wounds was confirmed by suppressing key inflammatory signaling pathways. Collectively, our findings highlight the potential of Pd@Pt nanoparticles as powerful anti-inflammatory agents, offering promising therapeutic options for type 2 diabetes and its associated complications.

Soluble catalysts that are readily blended with fuels render significant potentials in long-term storage and engine compatibility to improve ignition and combustion reliability under demanding conditions. However, the mechanistic role of such additives under droplet combustion scenarios that involve evaporation-reaction coupling remains unclear. In this study, single-droplet combustion experiments were conducted using RP-3 aviation kerosene doped with two different soluble catalysts, palladium acetylacetonate (Pd(acac) 2 ) and platinum acetylacetonate (Pt(acac) 2 ), over a range of ppm-level concentrations. Ignition delay time, burning rate and droplet lifetime were systematically quantified to elucidate the influence of catalysts on the fuel combustion behaviors. A stage-resolved analysis was conducted to differentiate ignition onset from quasi-steady burning. The results revealed that both catalysts improve ignition and combustion performance, yet exhibit distinct catalytic roles governed by their thermochemical properties and oxidation states. Earlier ignition is promoted by Pd(acac) 2 due to its low-temperature sublimation and the formation of catalytically active Pd and PdO. The former, however, also competes with the fuel for oxygen at the flame front, inducing an inhibiting effect on droplet burning. These effects together result in a non‑monotonic concentration dependence of the burning rate. In contrast, steadier burning is sustained by Pt(acac) 2 through its stable metallic state Pt. These findings clarify how catalyst decomposition characteristics and oxidation-state stability govern ignition onset and subsequent burning behavior. The present study provides mechanistic insights into fuel-catalyst interactions and guidance for developing fuel-soluble additives to enhance ignition reliability and combustion efficiency in advanced aero-engine systems. Novelty and significance statement This study advances the understanding of fuel-soluble noble-metal catalytic additives by revealing how their transient physicochemical evolution affects single-droplet combustion behaviors. By comparatively resolving the thermochemical evolution of two catalysts, this work demonstrates that decomposition pathways, oxidation-state stability, and catalytic activity collectively modulate stage-specific responses during droplet evaporation, ignition and burning. This stage-resolved perspective moves beyond treating soluble catalysts as static combustion enhancers and clarifies the intrinsic coupling between catalyst evolution and droplet combustion. These mechanistic insights establish transferable principles for the rational design of next-generation fuel-soluble catalytic additives and support an engine-compatible strategy for enhancing high-altitude ignition reliability and combustion efficiency without structural modifications to existing aero-engines. In addition, a U-Net-based deep learning framework is introduced for automatic droplet contour recognition, enabling accurate and efficient droplet combustion diagnostics.

Au@Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles (CSNs) with mesoporous structures and nanocavities were synthesized through a seed-mediated growth method. The process involved the initial formation of Au@Pd CSNs via the reduction of PdCl₄²⁻ by ascorbic acid (VC), followed by a reduction of PtCl62- by VC and a galvanic replacement reaction between the Pd shell and PtCl₆²⁻. The galvanic replacement reaction is a critical step in the formation of Au@Pd@Pt CSNs featuring distinctive void in the mesoporous structures. The electrocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized Au@Pd@Pt CSNs for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was systematically evaluated. Due to the unique hierarchical structure featuring both mesoporosity and internal nanocavities, the Au@Pd@Pt CSNs exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity compared to Au@Pd CSNs, Au@Pt CSNs, and commercial Pd/C catalysts. This work presents a facile strategy for constructing hierarchical core-shell nanostructures, demonstrating considerable potential for application in electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation.

Poisoning species, such as methanol and air pollutants, degrade the electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, via taking advantage of the varied electronic property of nano-silicon, a versatile strategy is reported for enhancing the catalytic activity and anti-poisoning ability toward ORR by decorating noble metal catalysts with the size-controlled silicon nanoclusters (DS). Consequently, DS-Pd exhibits the enhanced ORR performance with a large halfwave potential of 0.892 V and an onset potential of 1.010 V. More importantly, it also shows enhanced anti-poisoning performance in methanol, NaNO 2 and NaHSO 3 electrolytes, compared to those of commercial Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts. Mechanism studies reveal that the synergistic effect between Pd and more oxygen-philic and less poison-philic Si nanoclusters largely abbreviate the absorption of poisoning species on the active sites. This strategy also improves the methanol-tolerant performance of Pt based catalysts, providing a versatile strategy for the fabrication of methanol-tolerant ORR catalysts.

As biomimetic actuators that are operable under low voltages, ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMCs) have been proposed as promising candidates in the field of artificial muscles. In this study, a high specific surface area was obtained by directional roughening of a Nafion surface, and high-quality electrodes containing a Pd buffer layer and a Pt layer were deposited on the Nafion matrix via a method of isopropanol-assisted electroless plating, achieving outstanding electromechanical properties. The proposed IPMC exhibits an excellent tip displacement of 36.5 mm and a large blocking force of 2.4 MPa under a low direct current (DC) voltage. Furthermore, the IPMC has an excellent power density (up to 3966 J/m3) and can lift objects that are 20 times its weight, exhibiting great load capacity. More importantly, the imitation of biomimetic actuation behaviors including the opening/closing of petals and wing flapping of bees at a high frequency (21 Hz) has been demonstrated. The fabrication of high-quality Pd/Pt composite electrodes provides significant improvement for IPMC actuators, which is useful for their applications in medical devices and biomimetic robots.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis demands hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) cathodes that minimize precious-metal usage while remaining durable in strongly acidic media, yet improving Pt utilization and stability under reduced PGM loading remains challenging. Here, we develop a programmable nucleation pathway that uses in situ H* from formic acid (HCOOH) dehydrogenation at a Ru–Pd interface to gate reducing equivalents during nucleation. This enables site-confined Pt nucleation/immobilization and stabilizes a hydrogen-management interface for H* generation, relay, and recombination. The resulting Ru–Pd–Pt/C comprises uniformly dispersed ternary nanodomains (~2.46 nm). In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , Ru–Pd–Pt/C delivers η 10 = 12.24 mV, an apparent Tafel slope of 29.9 mV dec −1 from a unified 20–50 mV fitting window, and a PGM mass activity of 6.58 A mg PGM −1 at η = 50 mV. More importantly, membrane electrode assembly tests under identical assembly conditions show lower cell voltages than commercial 40 wt% Pt/C over 1–4 A cm −2 and stable operation at 1 A cm −2 . Density functional theory calculation shows Ru/Pd neighbors tune Pt toward near-thermoneutral H adsorption (ΔG H* = −0.19 eV), consistent with density of states/d-band shifts and the improved apparent HER response. This formation-stage programming offers a transferable framework for durable, low-PGM HER cathodes in acidic water electrolysis.

Precise structural modulation of Pt-based nanozymes is an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic performance for biochemical sensing. Herein, we report three-dimensional (3D) hollow nanospheres (HNPs) featuring highly dispersed Pd/Pt atomic sites as an efficient peroxidase mimic. The Pd/Pt-HNPs exhibit markedly enhanced peroxidase-like activity, which we attribute to the synergistic catalysis of bimetallic active centers combined with the hollow 3D architecture. Kinetic analysis reveals a Vmax of 20.29 × 10–8 M·s–1, corresponding to an activity ∼10-fold higher than that of Pd-HNPs and ∼1.6-fold higher than that of Pt-HNPs. Notably, the Kcat reaches 5.44 × 105·s–1, which is approximately 103-fold greater than that of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) under the same assay conditions. Leveraging this excellent catalytic efficiency, we established an ultrasensitive colorimetric platform for H2O2 quantification (limit of detection (LOD): 1.14 μM by calculation; visual limit of detection (vLOD): 2.5 μM by naked-eye inspection), exhibiting a detection range from 2.5 μM to 12.8 mM. The Pd/Pt-HNPs-based method delivers a sensitivity 55 and 13-fold higher than those of HRP and a confirmatory method, respectively. The assay further demonstrates reliable accuracy in complex food matrices (milk, dried bean curds, and chicken feet), affording good recovery rates (91.36–115.71%) with a coefficient of variation in the range from 4.06 to 15.41% and low susceptibility to interference. This study highlights the synergistic effect of Pd/Pt bimetallic sites and nanoengineering in enhancing nanozyme catalysis, enabling sensitive and reliable detection in complex food matrices.
