The Cu@Pt/C nanocomposites have been synthesized via two-step reduction method. Electrochemical observations showed that the Cu@Pt/C had better electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide than Pt/C, with a wide linear range between 0.50 μM and 32.56 mM, a high sensitivity of 351.3 μA mM − 1 cm − 2 , and a low detection limit of 0.15 μM (signal/noise = 3). Furthermore, the sensor based on Cu@Pt/C has potential applications due to its excellent long-time stability, good reproducibility and acceptable selectivity.

Radioactive UO2 powder was prepared by hydrothermal method and a set of Pt–xUO2/C catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method for solving the problem of low activity and easy poisoning of anode Pt/C catalysts for a direct ethanol fuel cell. XRD, TEM, EDS, XPS and ICP-MS characterization showed the successful loading of Pt and UO2 onto the carbon carrier. Electrochemical workstation and single cell test results confirm that the catalytic performance of Pt–10% UO2/C is significantly better than Pt/C-eg. It is speculated that the synergistic effect of Pt and U enhances the catalytic activity and UO2 improves the resistance to CO poisoning by releasing O2 stored in the lattice space, while the α-particles released by 235U can also generate radiolysis product OH and promote the oxidative desorption of CO from the Pt surface.

Graphical Herein, we report a highly efficient synthesis of N -arylhydroxylamines through controllable hydrogenation of nitroarenes using hydrazine hydrate as a hydrogen donor over Pt/C catalyst at a low temperature (30 °C). The synthesis of N -arylhydroxylamines through the in-situ hydrogenation of nitroarenes over commercial Pt/C catalyst was investigated. The effects of various reaction conditions including hydrogen donor, solvent, catalyst dosage, temperature and reaction time on the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB) to N -phenylhydroxylamine (PHA) were systematically investigated. The results showed that the yield of N -phenylhydroxylamine reached 87.2 % using hydrazine hydrate as hydrogen donor in N,N -dimethylformamide solvent at 30 °C for 60 min. And the catalyst showed no obvious activity loss after a 6-times recycle. Meanwhile, the developed methodology can also transform a range of nitroarenes to the corresponding N -arylhydroxylamines in excellent yields (74–99 %).

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a major role in the efficient operation of many important electrochemical energy devices. Herein, a novel catalyst of nanoporous silver (NPS) is in-situ synthesized by a high voltage anodization method in 0.1 M KOH which also serves as the electrolyte for the catalysis of ORR. Favored by the continuous pore channels, the mass transfer is enhanced within the NPS. Theoretical calculations suggest that the strengthened interactions between OOH intermediates and the dominant Ag(110) surfaces on NPS as revealed by an adsorption test reduce the activation energy for the rate determining step and thus accelerate the ORR. Due to the enhanced mass transfer and facile kinetics, the NPS exhibits excellent ORR activity and even outperforms the commercial Pt/C. Fascinating more, the service life of NPS is significantly extended through an in-situ regeneration process. The integration concept we demonstrate in this work shed new lights on the preparation of long-life functional materials with high performance in applications including but not limited to ORR.

Atomically well-dispersed platinum catalysts play a vital role in various chemical processes such as direct dehydrogenation of propane (PDH), due to their high performance originated from high atom utilization. However, these catalysts suffer from complex preparation methods, and preparing atomically dispersed Pt-based catalysts with feasible methods remains challenging. Herein, we report a convenient method to prepare efficient atomically dispersed Pt/C catalysts for PDH by sulfur doping into the carbon support by simple cyclohexane impregnation method. The prepared atomically well-dispersed catalysts possess strong interactions between Pt and carbon support, which led to improved exposure of active sites and higher propylene formation rate compared to that without sulfur doping. Sintering of the Pt species was also inhibited and stability was improved by 47%. Propylene selectivity also showed a positive correlation with the amount of sulfur doping. The propane conversion first increased and then decreased, which was due to the loss of sulfur during the reaction that caused the agglomeration of Pt and the evolution of structure. It was found that the maximum catalytic activity appeared with Pt clusters of ∼ 0.71 nm with an average Pt-Pt coordination number of 3.1 and Pt-Pt bond distance of 3.09 Å.

Among the currently studied nitrogen-doped Pt-C catalysts, the environmental friendliness of the nitrogen source and the stability of Pt-C catalysts for fuel cells are urgent issues to be solved. In this study, nitrogen-doped platinum-based catalyst (CSC/BP-Pt) with excellent stability for the ORR is prepared by a self-doping method based on chitosan (CS), a green biomass material with both nitrogen and carbon sources, in combination with conductive carbon black (BP2000). Finally, the N content of the catalyst is as high as 5.8 wt%, which is higher than most comparable catalysts (3–5 wt%). And electrochemical tests show that the CSC/BP-Pt electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) = 154.1 m 2 /g Pt , half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.85 V RHE ) has a better electrochemical performance than the commercial Pt/C (20 wt%), while the half-wave potential is reduced at 10,000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry with almost no attenuation (only 7 mVcompared to 31 mV of Pt/C). Besides, possible mechanisms to improve the activity and stability of CSC/BP-Pt are preliminarily proposed.

The hydrogen evolution reaction activity of carbon-supported Pt catalyst is highly dependent on Pt–C interfaces. Herein, we focus on the relationships between Pt activity and N/O-functionalized hollow carbon sphere (HCS) substrate in acidic media. The electrochemical dissolution of Pt counter electrode is performed to prepare Pt nanoparticles in low loading. The N groups are beneficial for homogeneously sized Pt nanoparticles, whereas the O groups lead to aggregated nanoparticles. Moreover, the proper electronegativity of the N groups may enable capturing of protons to create proton-rich Pt–C interfaces and transfer them onto the Pt sites. The O groups may also capture protons by hydrogen bonding, but the subsequent release of protons is more difficult due to a stronger electronegativity and result in an inferior Pt activity. Consequently, the N-doped HCS with a low Pt loading (1.7 μg cm–2 and 0.05 wt %) possesses a higher intrinsic activity compared with Pt on O-doped HCS. Moreover, it outperforms the commercial 20% Pt/C with a stable operation for 12 h. This work may provide suggestions for constructing the advantageous Pt–C interfaces by proper functional groups for high catalytic efficiencies.

Commercial Pt/C was modified with Ru (IV) species via the hydrolysis of Ruthenium (III) nitrosyl nitrate under a hydrothermal condition. It was revealed that the Pt nanoparticles were surrounded by Ru (IV) species and the presence of Ru (IV) species modified the electronic structure, which lowed the binding energy of Pt atoms. The results from the methanol electrooxidation suggested that the current intensity was increased and at the same time, the onset potential was decreased largely in the presence of Ru(IV) species modified Pt/C, which demonstrated the fact that the Ru (IV) species could activate the water molecules to provide the OH* to remove the CO ads at low potential.

Although the Co and N co-doped carbon catalyst (Co-NC) has attracted much attention because of its low cost and the natural abundance of the dopants, it has a low oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and a high selectivity for the two-electron (2e - ) reduction of oxygen to H 2 O 2 , which affects its use in fuel cells. Co-NC catalysts were prepared by the pyrolysis of a mixture of cobalt chloride and chitosan pretreated with zinc chloride at 650, 750 and 850 o C, followed by washing with nitric acid and annealing at 900 o C. The results indicate that zinc chloride helps the complexing of chitosan with Co 2+ , which is also a chemical activator that generates pores, and annealing caused the evaporation of the spherical Zn metal nanoparticles formed by the carbothermal reduction of Zn ions, leading to a unique porous structure of the catalysts with spherical pores filled with spherical carbon nanoparticles formed by the growth of nitrogen-doped carbon as a result of the Co catalyst. The degree of graphitization is also improved by the Co catalyst. The Co-NC catalyst obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 750 o Cshows the same four-electron (4e - ) reduction of oxygen as a commercial Pt/C catalyst, and a significantly higher ORR catalytic activity, longer-term stability and better methanol tolerance than a commercial Pt/C catalyst. These are due to its large specific surface area, high contents of pyridinic nitrogen and graphitic nitrogen that disperse the Co species and its excellent electrical conductivity.

Developing robust and low-cost electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through facile methods is of great significance to the energy and environment sustainability. Herein, a simple one-pot solvothermal method has been developed to synthesize a hybrid material of nickel@nickel carbide (Ni@Ni3C) nanochain embedded in a network of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The electrochemical experiments indicate that the composite of Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs has the HER electrocatalytic performance comparable to that of Pt/C in an acidic medium (0.5 M H2SO4). The overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 is only −74 mV with a Tafel slope of 46.9 mV dec−1. Compared to Ni@Ni3C in the absence of SWCNTs, the enhanced HER performance of Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs can be attributed to the increased intrinsic activity, improved electronic conductivity, and the electron coupling effect between Ni@Ni3C and SWCNTs. The Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs composites also show high stability at the overpotential of −0.2 V for 24 h. This work provides guidance for the synthesis of high-performance non-precious metal electrocatalysts for HER.

Carbon-encapsulated metal catalysts can have a high stability. The catalytic activation mechanism of the inert carbon shell requires further investigation. We prepared platinum-core carbon-shell catalysts on activated carbon supports. The graphitization degree of the carbon layer was tuned through pyrolysis temperature control. The catalysts were tested in the selective hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene. The intact carbon shell physically isolates the metal core. All coated samples achieved a target product selectivity above 99%. The catalytic activity exhibited a distinct volcano trend. The sample treated at 800 °C delivered the highest activity. Experimental and theoretical analyses revealed an interfacial electron transfer process. The metal core acts as an electron pump to enrich the carbon surface. The optimal activity originates from a balance between electronic and geometric effects. The electron-rich surface lowers the hydrogen dissociation barrier. The preserved carbon defects serve as necessary adsorption sites. The core-shell structure suppressed metal sintering and the catalyst maintained good stability over 10 reaction cycles. This study provides a basic understanding for the design of highly active carbon-functionalized interfaces.

The synthesis of high-performance jet fuel from biomass presents a solution to energy crises and environmental pollution. This paper introduces a novel strategy for producing jet fuel with a high heat sink and low freezing point using bio-derived phenol and ethanol. The production route comprises two successive steps: the alkylation of phenol with ethanol, followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), catalyzed by Hβ zeolite and Pt/C, respectively. The alkylation conditions were optimized at 260 °C for 8 h, achieving phenol conversion rates exceeding 95 % and yielding 88.7 % alkylphenol at a phenol to ethanol molar ratio of 1:3. The final HDO products consisted of 20.25 % monoethylcyclohexane, 44.87 % diethylcyclohexane, and 28.32 % triethylcyclohexane. These products demonstrated a heat sink capacity of 3.3 MJ/kg, a freezing point below −65 °C, a heat value of 45.4 MJ/kg, and a density of 0.82 g/cm 3 at 20 °C, surpassing the performance metrics of conventional JP-8 fuel. Kinetic studies on the alkylation revealed activation energies of 58.36 kJ/mol for O-alkylation and 122.07 kJ/mol for C-alkylation. The findings contribute to understanding the mechanisms of alkylation reactions between phenolic compounds and short chain alcohols. This work offers a straightforward and energy-efficient way to synthesize high-performance jet fuel from lignocellulosic derivatives, reducing processing energy consumption and enhancing feedstock utilization rates.
