Wearable photothermal TENG patches that enhance triboelectric output are used to promote proliferation and metastasis of fibroblasts

Haohao Zhang,Xiaoran Gong,Jiachen Ye,Xue Li

The triboelectric charge of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) will decrease due to the interfacial electric field. This work prepared PVDF/BaTiO 3 /MXene nanocomposite films as the intermediate layer between the negative friction material and the bottom electrode. The output voltage is about 450 % higher than that without the intermediate layer. Adding PVDF/BaTiO 3 enhanced the polarization effect, and adding MXene material provided abundant electron capture sites. Under the synergistic impact of electron storage and polarization effect, the triboelectric output of HOT-TENG is enhanced. Based on a single-electrode model, the e-skin patch collaboratively utilizes electrical stimulation and the photothermal effects of MXene to promote the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts over a short period (about 24 hours) without significant effects on cell survival. These findings support the development of TENG for wound healing and highlight the potential for developing portable enhanced electrical stimulation and photothermal patch devices.

A photocurable ultra-tough eutectic gel with coordination crosslinking used for wearable sensors and TENG flexible electrodes

Youjie Rong,Xiaomin Zhang,Huijie Li,Jianhua Fei,Ruiqiang Hang,Xiangyu Zhang,Xiaobo Huang,Xiaohong Yao

Flexible polymer molecular chains are of great interest to researchers in the field of flexible wearable electronics due to their unrivaled flexibility and ductility. However, achieving high toughness, high elasticity, environmental stability and easy machining of flexible electronic materials remains a challenge. In this study, we present a photocurable eutectic gel mainly composed of DMAPS, AAc, Zr 4+ and deep eutectic solvents (DES). Due to the strong coordination between zirconium ions and polymer networks, the gel can be endowed with excellent properties, such as excellent tensile strength (1.14 MPa), low hysteresis (5 kJ·m −3 ) and good adhesion (above 40 kPa). DES can not only give the gel good electrical conductivity, but also maintain the stability of the gel to ensure that the leakage or volatilization of the solvent will not occur in use. The properties mentioned above allow the gel to achieve a sensitivity factor of up to 1.7 over a small strain range, demonstrating its potential applications in the field of flexible strain sensors and triboelectric flexible electrode materials. What’s more, the gel can be used to prepare complex geometric shapes with high precision through digital light processing (DLP) based 3D printing technology. Therefore, this work introduces a novel approach for the development of highly stable flexible wearable devices, which has the potential to expand the applications of eutectic gels.

Revealing the Surface Topography Influence and Fundamental Operating Mechanism on Semiconductor–Semiconductor-Based Tribovoltaic Effect

Yue He,Jia Tian,Fangpei Li,Wenbo Peng,Yongning He

Tribovoltaic effect is an emerging phenomenon occurring between two materials, which can generate direct current (DC) rather than alternate current (AC) at the contact interface. Though the existence of a tribovoltaic effect indeed brings up a new method for power supply of critical sensors using the Internet of Things technology, the wear and damage of tribovoltaic materials related to the surface topography during the sliding process is still nonnegligible. In this work, the influence of surface topography on the tribovoltaic effect between semiconductors is investigated by means of a lateral sliding mode triboelectric nanogenerator composed of ZnO and Si (ZnO/Si LS-TENG). Results show that the increase of effective area has a great improvement on the output of the tribovoltaic effect. In addition, a novel operating mechanism and theoretical model based on the energy band theory are proposed to illustrate the semiconductor–semiconductor tribovoltaic effect clearly.

Elevating triboelectric polymer charge-carrying capacity via cascaded charge confinement and planting for remarkable performance amplification

Zekun Li,Aifang Yu,Jitao Liu,Yuanhong Shi,Wenwen Hu,Zhong Lin Wang,Junyi Zhai

The attainment of outrageous electrode charge density in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) hinges on substantially strengthening the charge-carrying capacity of triboelectric materials. Here, a universal cistern model is first proposed to derive essential prerequisites for reaching this destination. According to the deduction, surface functionalized BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanoparticles and poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) are exploited to construct interfaces from nanoscale to macroscopic scale in poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) to immensely bolster its 3D charge confinement capability. Subsequently, through the collaboration of a charge planting module (CPM), the charge hindrance effect is efficaciously attenuated, enabling the modified P(VDF-HFP) to confine more charges. As a consequence, the transferred charge density (TCD) of the TENG utilizing the modified P(VDF-HFP) reaches 600 μC/m 2 , a 20-fold increment over the TCD of the unmodified P(VDF-HFP). Meanwhile, the charge de-trapping of the modified P(VDF-HFP) also reveals that the CPM not only elevates the surface charge of the dielectric but also raises the space charge of the dielectric, indicative of a synergistic effect between the various tactics. Furthermore, the model and methodology we have crafted can be broadly applied to refine a broad spectrum of triboelectric materials, potentially propelling forward the advancement of highly charged triboelectric dielectrics.

An optimized design for dielectric layer charges distribution towards high-performance output of TENG and its multifunctional applications

Yunfeng Wang,Haibao Mu,Shasha He,Huanmin Yao,Shuai Wang,Yiyun Yang,Guanjun Zhang

In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, self-powered sensors provide an effective way to solve the energy problem. In this paper, a V 2 CTx-BaTiO 3 -V 2 CTx@Ecoflex (VBV) composite dielectric layer membrane with a sandwich structure is proposed and used to construct self-powered flexible sensor devices. Due to the charge trapping ability of the V 2 CTx layer with abundant functional groups and the charge storage ability of the BaTiO 3 layer, the charge loss of the device during contact- separation gets reduced, which improves the TENG output performance. The peak voltage of VBV-TENG is up to 550 V, which is 1.6 and 1.8 times higher than the output of TENG based on V 2 CTx and BaTiO 3 doping in separate, respectively. The VBV-TENG can light up to 400 LEDs under tapping and achieve a power density of 12.8 W/m 2 with optimal impedance matching. It can not only be used as an energy-harvesting device, but has also been shown to be a self-powered pressure sensor with an ultra-high sensitivity of 23.7 V/kPa, which can be used for the monitoring of human movement physiological signals. Finally, a self-powered flexible material recognition sensor based on the VBV composite dielectric layer is constructed by rational design, which realizes the effective recognition of various materials. This study provides a new pathway for design of high-performance dielectric layer of TENG, and explores the application of realizing multifunctional self-powered sensors based on TENG.

Preparation of Salt-Induced Ultra-Stretchable Nanocellulose Composite Hydrogel for Self-Powered Sensors

Xiaofa Wang,Xincai Li,Baobin Wang,Jiachuan Chen,Lei Zhang,Kai Zhang,Ming He,Yu Xue,Guihua Yang

Hydrogels have attracted much attraction for promising flexible electronics due to the versatile tunability of the properties. However, there is still a big obstacle to balance between the multi-properties and performance of wearable electronics. Herein, we propose a salt-percolated nanocellulose composite hydrogel which was fabricated via radical polymerization with acrylic acid as polymer networks (NaCl-CNCs-PAA). CNCs were utilized as a reinforcing agent to enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Moreover, the abundant hydroxyl groups endow the hydrogel with noncovalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, and the robustness of the hydrogel was thus improved. NaCl incorporation induced the electrostatic interaction between CNCs and PAA polymer blocks, thus facilitating the improvement of the stretchability of the hydrogel. The as-obtained hydrogel exhibited excellent stretchability, ionic conductivity, mechanical robustness and anti-freezing properties, making it suitable for self-powered sensing applications. A single-mode triboelectric nanogenerator (C-TENG) was fabricated by utilizing the composite hydrogel as electrodes. This C-TENG could effectively convert biomechanical energy to electricity (89.2 V, 1.8 µA, 32.1 nC, and the max power density of 60.8 mW m−2at 1.5 Hz.) Moreover, the composite hydrogel was applied for strain sensing to detect human motions. The nanocellulose composite hydrogel can achieve the application as a power supply in integrated sensing systems and as a strain sensor for human motion detection. Keywords:cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs);hydrogel;self-powered sensor;triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG);strain sensor

Hybrid Aerogel Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on the Synergistic Effect of Solid–Solid/Gas–Solid Triboelectricity and Piezoelectric Polarization

Tianci Huang,Yong Long,Bingqi Zhao,Qilin Hua,Zhong Lin Wang,Weiguo Hu

Aerogels, due to their unique interconnected 3D networks, and large number of air-filled pores, extend the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of the nanoscale to the macro level. However, aerogels made from a single component can hardly meet the needs of multifunctional energy harvesting/supply situations. Here, a BaTiO3-based hybrid aerogel (BTO HA) with 3D network structure was prepared. When the BTO HA is used as the electrode of triboelectric nanogenerator (BTO HA-TENG), high electrical output performances were obtained, which is due to the synergistic effect of solid–solid contact electrifications between the two electrification layers, the gas–solid contact electrifications between the inner surface of BTO HA and the air filled in the aerogel pores, and the piezoelectricity of the doped BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The BTO HA-TENG exhibited excellent fatigue resistance and structural stability after 12,000 cycles of alternatively contact/separation tests, and it can not only provide stable power supply for commercial capacitors, drive small mobile electronic devices but also can be used as a self-powered sensor to monitor human motion signals. Compared with traditional TENGs depending on surface charge transfer, the BTO HA-TENG exhibited its unique advantage that it can generate and transfer triboelectric charges by 3D volume, which boost TENGs’ electrical output performances.

Coaxial tribonegative yarn TENG with aromatic polyimide as charge entrapment layer for real-time edge ball assessment in cricket sports

Wasim Akram,Qian Chen,Xunlong Zhang,Song Ren,Li Niu,Jian Fang

Energy harvesting yarns working on triboelectric effect by converting mechanical energy into electricity for running wearable electronics as well as operating as self-powered sensors, are superb choices for wearable electronics of current and future generations. However, current yarn-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) designed through electrospinning process are limited in achieving higher outputs, comfort, mechanical strength, washability, and industrial scalability. In this study, we introduce a flexible and durable tribonegative yarn TENG (TNY) with an electrospun polyimide (PI) intermediate charge trapping layer between the electrode and electrospun superhydrophobic polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)/Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). In this coaxial arrangement, the PI charge entrapment layer enabled the TNY to exhibit an output voltage of 14 V in a 2.5 cm length, compared to only 8 V for TNY without PI layer. The TNY can be successfully woven and knitted into electronic textiles (E-Textiles), with their outputs compared based on various knitted and woven patterns. The E-Textile maintained considerable outputs after washing and withstood 5000 Martindale abrasion cycles. The superhydrophobic behavior also enabled TNY to harvest water energy from a running tap. We demonstrated the potential of these E-Textiles for edge ball sensing in cricket sports in real-time by leveraging the benefits of triboelectrification, thereby avoiding the need for complex camera setups and sound systems for judging ball movements at ± 140 km/hr in real sports. We also employed E-Textiles for smart switch functions, which can be beneficial in smart systems. This study demonstrates the improved performance of yarn-based TENGs and further extends the applications of TENGs in sports analysis. It provides a facile and high-efficiency approach for designing triboelectric sensors, offering a cost-effective alternative to complex and expensive sports equipment.

A self-powered biosensing system based on triboelectric nanogenerator for rapid bacterial DNA detection

Xiaolin Qu,Peng Qi,Peng Wang,Jiawei Li,Congyu Wang,Dun Zhang,Yi Wan,Shiyun Ai,Xiaoqiang Wang

A self-powered biosensing system based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for bacterial DNA detection is invented and a vertical contact-separation TENG was designed to provide a steady power supply to a detection bioreactor . A carboxyl-functionalized capture probe was modified on etched indium tin oxide (ITO) glass, with which target bacterial DNA could be recognized. Meanwhile, multi-walled carbon-nanotubes (CNT)-modified signal probe was designed to amplify the detection signal due to its excellent electrical conductivity . The self-powered biosensing system could measure the variation in output voltage and be highly sensible with a low detection limit at 0.084 pM of target DNA. In addition, a mathematical model based on the Freundlich isotherm was built to simulate the DNA detection process, and it was feasible to simulate the calibration equation and detection range. A portable self-powered biosensing device was made by integrating miniaturized TENG and bioreactor in a 3D-printed mold, with which the presence of bacterial DNA could be instantly indicated by LED (light-emitting diode). This study provided a useful platform for quick bacterial DNA detection and paved the way for further development of pocket diagnosis with TENG-based biosensing systems.

A stretchable, harsh condition-resistant and ambient-stable hydrogel and its applications in triboelectric nanogenerator

Bing Jiang,Yong Long,Xiong Pu,Weiguo Hu,Zhong Lin Wang

During practical applications, energy harvesting devices such as TENGs always face complex harsh environment such as acidic, alkaline, and saline conditions. Even if the whole device (at least the electrode of the device) was protected by encapsulated approach, an inevitable contact between the electrode and the external harsh environment by the possible slight leakage would still cause seriously damage to the electrode materials. Consequently, it's of great significance to develop durable TENG materials that could be anticorrosive and harsh environmental resistant under a wide range of extreme conditions. In this work, a chemically robust and ultra-durable hydrogel (Cyc-hydrogel) was prepared by a self-polymerization reaction under room temperature. When we use the Cyc-hydrogel as the electrode of TENGs pretreated by extremely harsh conditions such as strong acidic, alkaline, and high concentration of saline solutions , respectively, the corresponding TENG's output performances could be kept relatively stable. Furthermore, even pretreated by simulated seawater which contained a high salinity, the resultant Cyc-hydrogel can still ensure a relatively stable electrical output performance when serving as the electrode of the TENGs. Our as-prepared hydrogel suggested great potentials for TENGs’ electrode material because of the inevitable slight leakage of the encapsulation device.

A hierarchical core-shell tribopositive yarn TENG with electrospun polyethyleneimine (PEI) nanofibers for sustainable energy harvesting and human machine interface application

Wasim Akram,Zhe Sun,Zhan Qu,Qian Chen,Haochen Yan,Li Niu,Jian Fang

The rising demand for sustainable energy has led to significant interest in triboelectric yarns, which can be integrated into smart textiles with energy harvesting and sensing capabilities. While ongoing research on tribonegative yarns has advanced the development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs); further progress is needed on fabricating tribopositive yarns that offer scalability, ease of fabrication, soft aesthetics, easy to be woven and knit with higher electrical outputs, and enhanced durability. Our work introduces a core-shell structured, flexible, durable and continuous scalable tribopositive yarn TENG (TPY), fabricated via conjugate electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) possessing highly polar groups ⸺C ≡ N with flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and increasing electron donating capability amine functional groups (⸺NH 2 ) rich polyethyleneimine (PEI). Due to the electron-withdrawing capability of the amine groups, the hierarchical TPY with 5 % PEI concentration exhibited antibacterial properties and generated an output voltage of 13.3 V in a 2.5 cm length, which is ∼183 % higher than the 4.7 V produced by the PAN-TPU TENG yarn. TPY was shaped into various woven and knitted electronic textiles (e-textiles) to study the impact of triboelectricity on designed fabrics structure where, 2/2 basket woven, and 1x1 rib knitted TENG showed power densities of 5.518 mW/m 2 and 4.504 mW/m 2 respectively. Maintaining durability and soft aesthetics, e-textiles withstood 4000 Martindale abrasion cycles. For practical applications, they were utilized as self-powered sensors to monitor body motions and differentiate objects through grasping and releasing. Additionally, they functioned as a human-machine interface (HMI) for PowerPoint slide transitions and as a smart switch to control power on/off functions. This work demonstrates an easy approach for designing durable tribopositive yarns with enhanced electrical output and opens new ways for practical applications of textile based TENGs.

Lead-free CsBi3I10 perovskite based photo-enhanced triboelectric nanogenerator

Zhan Wei,Ling Ding,Na Sun,Le-Yang Dang,Hao-Ran Sun,Jie-Cai Han,Jia-Qi Zhu,Gui-Gen Wang

Perovskites have become promising candidates for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) because of their excellent electrical and dielectric properties . Also, and the as-fabricated triboelectric-photoelectric coupled TENG based on those semiconductor characteristics can effectively enhance the device output performance. Herein, a low-toxic lead-free bismuth halide perovskite CsBi 3 I 10 (CBI) film was proposed as triboelectric material for the first time, and a photo-enhanced TENG was designed based on CBI owing to its broad absorption properties . The CBI based TENG exhibits the highest voltage of 158 V and current density of 45.5 mA m −2 in dark condition. Furthermore, under illumination, the triboelectric output of voltage and current are increased by about 21.7% and 15.8% respectively, and the power density of the device can reach up to 4.95 W m −2 . This work not only initiates a new route for applying lead-free perovskite in TENGs but also presents a hybrid TENG for simultaneously harvesting mechanical and light energy based on the triboelectric-photoelectric coupling effect.
