In this study, the novel graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanodots etched with citrate (CCNDs) were synthesized successfully. And the result CCNDs exhibited an obvious aggregation emission effect (AIE) by forming a fluorescence complex with chlortetracycline (CTC) and significantly enhanced the fluorescence intensity of CCNDs. On the strength of this, the synthesized CCNDs demonstrated remarkable sensitivity and selectivity to CTC, which has been effectively studied and utilized for selectively and sensitively detecting CTC by AIE-based fluorescence-enhanced effect with a detection range spanning from 0 to 15 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 13 nM. The CCNDs were viably used for actually detecting CTC in real samples including chicken and feed, and further extended to detecting CTC in living cells. Finally, the bonding mechanism of CCNDs towards CTC was investigated in detail by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta(ζ) potential, TEM, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis), resonance light scattering (RLS) and fluorescence lifetime. It is due to the combination of a special fluorescent complex between CCNDs and CTC, which distinguishes CTC from other TCs.

Fluorescence probes play a crucial role in optical imaging for visualization of complex biological processes. As compared with conventional organic fluorogens , the probes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics show significant advantages in high quantum yield at concentrated and aggregated state, large Stokes shift and low cytotoxicity. However, the synthesis of AIE-active fluorescent probes through the ESIPT mechanism has received only very limited attention. On the other hand, the preparation of biodegradable fluorescent probes through the ESIPT mechanism has not been demonstrated thus far. In this work, we reported for the first time that water dispersible and biodegradable fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles with AIE and ESIPT characteristics could be facilely obtained through conjugation of 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone based benzophenone azine (BPA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) using hexamethylene diisocyanate . The final copolymers contained hydrophilic and biocompatible PEG and biodegradable urethane linkage are readily self-assembled into core-shell nanostructures . Moreover, the self-assembled BPA-PEG 2000 fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) displayed obvious AIE feature, high water dispersibility, superb biocompatibility, biodegradability and excellent cell dyeing performance. All of the above properties implied that BPA-PEG 2000 FONs are promising candidates for a variety of biomedical applications.

In recent years, fluorescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have been receiving widespread attention in diverse fields due to their unique characteristics. In this work, a novel AIE fluorescent dye TTPA with electron acceptor–donor (A-D) structure were fabricated through Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel condensation reaction using benzothiazole (BTA) and 4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl) benzaldehyde (TPB) as main components, and its maximum emission wavelength was about at 524 nm, otherwise, on the basis of the quantum calculations, the energy difference ΔE between HOMO and LUMO of TPB and TTPA were about 3.63 eV and 2.81 eV, respectively. The obtained TTPA dye with AIE feature could emit fluorescence in THF owing to the electron A-D structure and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect. Subsequently, the amphiphilic fluorescent copolymers PEG-PA were synthesized through the RAFT polymerization of TTPA and PEGMA with various feeding ratios. The molecular weight (M W ) and molecular weight distribution (Ð) of PEG-PA1 were about 1.8 × 10 4 and 1.30, respectively. According to the 1 H NMR spectra, the molar proportion of TTPA in PEG-PA increased from 18.5 % to 26.6 % when the proportion of TTPA in the reactants increased from 20.0 % to 25.0 %. Moreover, the as-prepared PEG-PA copolymers would self-assemble into nanoparticles with 150–200 nm diameter in a water solution due to their amphiphilic property, which exhibited the prospective bioimaging application with many advantages such as hypotoxicity, good biocompatibility, and excellent cells penetration.

Highly toxic aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) frequently contaminates food products, posing a serious threat to human health. Developing accurate, efficient and user-friendly detection strategies is essential. This study synthesized a novel H 4 TCPE-UiO-66@PtNPs nanozyme with stable fluorescence and catalytic properties through integrating H 4 TCPE ligands possessing aggregation-induced luminescence (AIE) properties with in-situ grown PtNPs, and further developed a fluorescence-colorimetric dual-signal immunosensing platform for the detection of AFB 1 contamination in food products. Utilizing an immunocompetitive reaction and magnetic separation techniques, the platform enabled quantitative analysis of AFB 1 , achieving favorable linear range of 0.05–100 ng/mL and high sensitivity (fluorescence LOD: 0.022 ng/mL, colorimetric LOD: 0.047 ng/mL). Real samples tests yielded satisfactory recoveries (84.6%–110.1%) and good reproducibility (RSD ≤ 5.3%, n = 3), demonstrating the platform's potential for specific identification and screening of AFB 1 in complex matrices. The proposed dual-signal detection strategy provides an effective solution for self-calibrated and rapid analysis of foodborne or environmental pollutants.

Peptides, which are hydrolysis products of proteins, are commonly utilized as nutritional supplements in food due to their high bio-safety profile. In this study, we present a novel water-soluble fluorescent probe derived from fish collagen peptides, termed Sali-Pep. This probe exhibits light green fluorescence, characterized by both aggregate-induced-emission (AIE) and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms, with emission peaks at 480 nm and 522 nm. Furthermore, Sali-Pep demonstrates a high sensitivity towards Cu 2+ ions via a “turn-off” fluorescence mechanism, and towards Zn 2+ ions through a “turn-on” fluorescence mechanism, both in a dose-dependent manner. The detection limits of Sali-Pep were 1.49 × 10 −7 M for Cu 2+ and 4.23 × 10 −7 M for Zn 2+ , respectively. In real environmental and biological samples, the recoveries of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions ranged from 91.14 % to 108.61 %. These findings indicate that Sali-Pep is a promising fluorescent probe for the detection of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ ions, combining both high biosafety and low environmental risk. Additionally, this study also show that collagen-derived peptides have the potential to serve as AIE sensing platforms for metal ion detection and fluorescent labeling.

Fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FNPs) with intensive luminescence are widely applied in various biomedical fields, but the malicious aggregation caused quenching effect of conventional organic dyes hampers their biomedical application. In this work, we report a facile and highly efficient method for fabrication of FNPs with a stable cross-linked structure and enhanced luminescence via a one-pot mercaptoacetic acid locking imine reaction, in which a hydrophobic aggregation induced emission (AIE) dye (AHAn) and hydrophilic polylysine (Plys) were used as two reaction components, while mercaptoacetic acid acted as the lock to conjugate AHAn and Plys. The final amphiphilic fluorescent materials (Plys&AHAn&Plys) are readily formed FNPs in aqueous solution and exhibit high water dispersibility and strong luminescence. Furthermore, Plys&AHAn&Plys FNPs display low toxicity and good biological imaging performance. Altogether, we have developed a rather facile one-pot multicomponent reaction (MCR) to fabricate AIE active FNPs, which shows many promising properties for biomedical applications. More importantly, the MCR strategy could also be used for fabrication of many other multifunctional AIE active polymeric nanoprobes due to its good substrate adaptability and high efficiency.

Benefit from the efficient energy transfer, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and host-guest recognition as strategies of signal amplification and specific binding have been applied to establish the sensing system; however, the application of these two attractive strategies in one system is rare. Herein, we propose a “turn-on” to “turn-off” fluorescent strategy for sensitive detection of β-galactosidase (β-Gal) based on the application of AIE and host-guest recognition. In this work, a novel red-emitted (635 nm) copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) protected by dithioerythritol (DTE) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has been found to possess AIE property induced by aluminum cations to achieve the “turn-on” process, and the coordinated behavior between aluminum cations and DTE/β-CD CuNCs is also discussed. As the hydrolysis product of β-Gal and 4-nitrophenyl-β-D-galactopyranoside, p-nitrophenol can combine with β-CD in DTE/β-CD CuNCs by the host-guest recognition to realize the efficient photoelectron transfer to “turn-off” the fluorescence. This strategy performs the exciting linear range of 0.0–50.0 U/L and detection limit of 0.56 U/L (S/N = 3) for sensitive detection of β-Gal and further applies in biologic samples successfully. As far as we know, this is the first work to combine AIE and host-guest recognition in one system to construct the sensing platform, which can achieve efficient and specific energy transfer to improve the sensitivity of the system.

Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) and viscosity play important physiological roles in organisms, and real-time detection of their content changes is critical for organisms and human health. Herein, we developed a fluorescence probe NPNB with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance and mitochondrial localization effect for simultaneous detection of viscosity and SO 2 . NPNB can realize the efficient and specific detection of SO 2 and viscosity at different emission wavelengths with a cross-talk-free effect, respectively. NPNB showed good sensing performance against SO 2 , including fast response (<7 min), and low detection limit (8.4 nM). Bioimaging experiments indicated that NPNB has good mitochondrial targeting and can achieve cellular imaging of both exogenous and endogenous SO 2 and viscosity. Importantly, NPNB enables real-time imaging of changes in SO 2 and viscosity during mitochondrial dysfunction. Moreover, the resulting probe has been applied to detect SO 2 in food and water samples with a satisfactory recovery (84.46–105.57 %), further demonstrating its compatibility and practicality.

Recently, AIE-active fluorescent materials have attracted extensive investigation due to their significant applications in the fields of memory devices, photomodulation, information displays, sensors, and biological imaging. In this contribution, a novel acrylate AIE-active dye of TPMA was successfully synthesized by Suzuki coupling and acylation reaction, and belongs to the monoclinic crystal system and P21/c space group from the crystal structure analysis, and its fluorescence intensity was stronger with an obvious red shift of emission wavelength as compared with the reported TPB dye. Moreover, the obtained TPMA dye exhibits multi-stimuli-responsivity and a two-photon fluorescent switch with excellent reversibility in the solid state. Subsequently, the corresponding fluorescent polymers of PEG-TM were successfully fabricated via RAFT polymerization of TPMA and PEGMA with a molecular weight of about 25 000 (Mn) and narrow polydispersity index (PDI). From 1H NMR analysis, when the feeding ratio of TPMA increased to 32.2% from 19.2%, the molar fraction of TPMA in PEG-TM polymers accordingly increased to 32.8% from 19.5%. In water solution, the as-prepared PEG-TM1 polymers would self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with diameters ranging from 150 to 250 nm, and their maximum emission wavelength presented at 518 nm with obvious AIE phenomena. Moreover, the as-synthesized PEG-TM polymers have prospective application in biological imaging due to their good fluorescence, high water solubility and excellent biocompatibility.

In this work, tea saponin (TS) which is indispensable in Camellia oleifera industry was used to synthesize a class of hydrophobic carbon dots (TS-CDs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. A new fluorescent sensing platform based on AIE and non-modified TS-CDs for the detection of human serum albumin (HSA) and pH was developed, respectively. Interestingly, the developed platform is capable of ratiometric detecting extremely acidic pH in the range of 0.2–1.8 linearly (R 2 = 0.9959) due to protonation-deprotonation. Meanwhile, TS-CDs exhibited well stability toward HSA detection over a wide linear range (0–180 μM), long-term (48 h), and wide pH range (2–13). Furthermore, TS-CDs was utilized to localize to mitochondria and detect HSA in living cells, demonstrating its promising perspective in biosensing applications. This work may pave a novel avenue for high value-added utilization in the extraction process of extracting camellia oil for food woody oil.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FPNs) have recently emerged as the promising nanoprobes for biological imaging for their intensive fluorescence, good photostability, desirable biocompatibility and well designability of structure and optical properties. Herein, we proposed a novel strategy for fabrication of AIE-active FPNs through the post modification of synthetic copolymers to form Schiff base. The size, morphology, optical properties and biocompatibility as well as cell uptake behavior were evaluated in detailed. To fabricate these AIE-active FPNs, poly(PEG- co -VA) copolymers were first obtained via addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and 3-vinylaniline (VA) as the monomers. Then the AIE-active SA-poly(PEG- co -VA) FPNs were formed through the reaction between salicylaldehyde (SA) and VA. Results demonstrated that SA-poly(PEG- co -VA) FPNs possess bright fluorescence, superior photo-bleaching resistance, excellent biocompatibility and efficient cell uptake behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for fabrication AIE-active FPNs through post modification of synthetic copolymers. The facile fabrication procedure and the remarkable features suggested that these AIE-active FPNs promising candidates for biomedical applications.

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement is one of the main methods for designing copper clusters (CuNCs) with high fluorescence intensity. In this study, H 2 O can rapidly construct stable hydrogen bonds with 2-thiobarbituric acid ligands of CuNCs, leading to denser aggregation between CuNCs. This process can occur at a level of intensity visible to the naked eye and can be completed within 30 s. As a result, the fluorescence turns to yellow with emission wavelength at 573 nm from red with emission wavelength at 638 nm, and the quantum yield has been increased to 50.03 %. The noticeable “turn on” phenomenon can be utilized for detecting alcohol content in low-alcohol liquor quality control. Additionally, bright luminous make Y-CuNCs can be employed for accurate identification of human latent fingerprints (LFPs), which can accurately identify the third level structure of the LFPs.
