A new ultrasonic triboelectric catalytic amplification strategy for SERS determination of trace nonylphenol in milk with dual nanosurface COF probes

Zhiqiang Wang,Chenguang Yi,Guiqing Wen,Aihui Liang,Zhiliang Jiang

Two new nanosurface molecularly imprinted covalent organic framework nanoprobes (MICOF) with recognition and catalytic amplification di-functions for the detection of trace endocrine disruptor nonylphenol (NPN) in milk were synthesized, gold nanocluster (AuNC)/nanopolyvinylchloride (PVC) as substrates, NPN as the template molecule, benzidine and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol as the functional monomers. The di-nanoprobes efficiently catalyzed a new indicator nanoreaction between HAuCl 4 and triethanolamine to generate gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with SERS effect. Surprisingly, under ultrasonic irradiation, the di-nanoprobes exhibited extremely strong catalysis, due to the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) constructed. The AuNC@COF was positive and the PVC@COF was negative, with an increase in catalytic activity of 680%. When NPN was added, it was selectively adsorbed in the nanoprobe imprinted sites, further enhancing catalysis. The working curve slope was increased by 2000%, with a linear range of 0.2-10 nmol/L and limit of detection (LOD) was 0.060 nmol/L NPN. The method was applied to the determination of milk with relative deviations (RSD) of 0.97-9.6% and recovery of 90.4-109.8%. In addition, this new SERS quantitative analysis method was also used to determine phenol, bisphenol A and 1-naphthol with LOD were 0.080, 0.060 and 0.12 nmol/L respectively, which proved that it is of universality and high sensitivity. The ultrasonic driven MICOF di-probe TENG catalytic enhancement mechanism was constructed.

Cationic Surfactant Modified 3D COF and Its Application in the Adsorption of UV Filters and Alkylphenols from Food Packaging Material Migrants

Shijuan Zhang,Xia Wu,Chong Ma,Yanxin Li,Jinmao You

Hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles were applied in the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for the first time to achieve the synthesis of 3D COF from 2D materials. Benzidine, one raw material for COF, was enclosed in the CTAB micelles because of the hydrophobic effect, and thus the target COF, which can be formed immediately with the aid of p-toluenesulfonic acid, grew in a micelle guided 3D form. The synthesized 3D COF showed a flower-like structure, whereas the COF synthesized without CTAB showed a smooth structure. The diameter of the 3D COFs showed direct correlations with CTAB concentrations. Moreover, the CTAB modified COF also showed a dramatically improved fluorescence property in comparison with that of normal COFs. The synthesized 3D COF showed good adsorption performance for UV filters and alkylphenols with recoveries ranged from 90.2% to 99.8%, and it also showed good fluorescence response for Pb2+. The utility of CTAB modified COF was verified in the enrichment of UV filters and alkylphenols from food packaging material migrants.

Light-triggered molecular lever in a MOF@COF nanosheet for synergistic enhancement of heat and mass transfer in CO2 photothermal desorption

Jingyu Bao,Mingjie Zhou,Zuxue Bai,Yawei Xie,Xuehui Jia,Jiajun Zeng,Yujie Huang,Ruimeng Wang,Jianmin Chen,Zhaowei Jia,Liqin Zhou,Zhongxing Zhao,Jianming Pan,Jiguang Deng,Zhenxia Zhao

A photo-switchable NH 2 -AZO molecular lever exfoliates MOF and bridges COF growth. • Core-shell nanosheet couples light-triggered pore opening with heating. • It shows high CO 2 capacity (4.5 mmol/g at 298 K/1 bar) and selectivity (CO 2 /N 2  = 190). • It achieves 98% CO 2 desorption in 40 min with 75% lower regeneration energy. • Light-triggered transfer ends desorption tailing and concentrates CO 2 release. The CO 2 capture efficiency of solid adsorbents in CCS technology is largely determined by their regeneration efficiency. To achieve rapid and energy-efficient CO 2 adsorbents regeneration, emerging photothermal desorption technologies offer distinct advantages owing to their unique inside-out heating mechanism. However, current adsorbent materials often struggle to balance photothermal conversion efficiency and mass-transfer performance. The incorporation of photothermal components enhances energy conversion but tends to block or lengthen diffusion pathways, resulting in a mismatch between heat delivery and pore accessibility. Inspired by the light-regulated opening and closing of plant stomata, this study proposes a light-triggered synergistic intelligent mass-transfer strategy for efficient CO 2 capture and enhances photothermal desorption using a MOF@COF nanosheet composite. The key point of this strategy is the multifunctional photo-switch molecule NH 2 -AZO, which acts as a molecular lever. It induces the self-exfoliation of CALF-20 into nanosheets, thereby shortening diffusion pathways, and simultaneously facilitates the epitaxial growth of a COF photothermal shell. Furthermore, its reversible photoisomerization enables dynamic regulation of internal pore sizes. This on-demand opening mass-transfer mechanism, coupled with the high photothermal efficiency of the COF shell, substantially accelerates CO 2 diffusion during photothermal desorption.

Hollow COF-derived carbon supports enable PtCo alloy catalysts with exceptional activity and durability for oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells

Gong Li,Jingsen Bai,Dan Wang,Liang Liang,Chunyu Ru,Xue Gong,Minhua Shao,Changpeng Liu,Meiling Xiao,Wei Xing

The development of high-performance and durable oxygen reduction reaction catalysts under harsh working environments remains a key challenge in advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, we report a series of hollow-structured covalent organic framework-derived carbon as support materials for PtCo alloy nanocatalysts. These hollow architectures provide unique spatial confinement and encapsulation effects, which not only facilitate efficient mass transport but also protect active sites from degradation in acidic media, thereby ensuring simultaneous enhancement in activity and stability. The optimized PtCo@NC TAPBT catalyst delivers a peak power density of 1.23 W cm −2 under H 2 -Air conditions and a mass activity of 1.06 A mg Pt −1 at 0.9 V, representing 2.41 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.40 A mg Pt −1 ). Moreover, the fuel cell assembled with this catalyst exhibits outstanding durability, showing a voltage degradation of only 8 mV after 30000 cycles at 0.8 A cm −2 and a mass activity retention of 87.7% (0.93 A mg Pt −1 ). Notably, this performance exceeds the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2025 initial mass activity target (0.44 A mg Pt −1 ) by a factor of 2.1, highlighting the potential of HCOF-derived carbon materials for next-generation fuel cell applications.

Synergistic enhancement of the adsorption performance of covalent organic framework (COF) for chlorinated organic compounds through structural connection and electronic regulation

Xiaolong Yao,Weihong Zhang,Zhengyang Feng,Meiqin Qu,Chun Wang,Longchun Zhong,Dengchao Liu,Wei Wang,Guotao Xiao,Qingwei Bu,Yingxue Sun,Gang Li,Xinyue Liang,Le Wang,Xiaoming Wei

COF-V rapidly adsorbs 2,4-DCP, CAP and DCF-Na within 30 min. • Maximum capacities of 665.54–773.65 mg∙g −1 were achieved. • Ternary mixtures exhibit a non-additive synergistic compensation effect. • Imine sites and hierarchical pores enable stable, reusable adsorption. Efficient capture of structurally diverse chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) from mixed aqueous matrices requires adsorbents that combine accessible porosity with chemically differentiated binding environments. Here, we report an imine-linked covalent organic framework, COF-V, that integrates a conjugated pore surface, imine-rich polar sites and hierarchical micro-/mesoporosity, with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 752.73 m 2 ∙g −1 and dominant pore sizes of 1.92 and 3.78 nm. COF-V rapidly adsorbed 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), chloramphenicol (CAP) and diclofenac sodium (DCF-Na), reaching equilibrium within 30 min and exhibiting Langmuir capacities of 680.84, 773.65 and 665.54 mg∙g −1 at 293 K, respectively. In binary mixtures, competition depended strongly on molecular size and functional-group complementarity. In the ternary system, however, the observed adsorption-retention ratios of 77.15 %, 94.66 % and 83.43 % exceeded those predicted from independent superposition of the corresponding binary inhibition effects, giving compensation coefficients of 1.021, 1.014 and 1.072. This non-additive synergistic compensation arises from complementary occupation of confined and wider pore domains and differentiated use of aromatic and polar binding sites, rather than from adsorption exceeding the corresponding single-solute capacities. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal a cooperative mechanism involving pore confinement, π-π and n-π interactions, hydrophobic association, hydrogen and halogen bonding, and speciation-dependent electrostatics. COF-V preserved its characteristic framework structure after acid and alkali exposure and retained cycle stability factors above 0.85 after five regeneration cycles. These results identify pore-molecule complementarity and spatially differentiated interfacial interactions as design principles for mitigating competitive adsorption in multicomponent aqueous systems. Regulating interface charge separation to unlock photocatalytic non-radical pathways: Construction of BiOCl/COF S-scheme heterojunction for efficient antibiotic remediation

Hailan Qin,Siyuan Di,Min Liu,Qiuyue Zhang,Pin Chen,Zihan Li,Shukui Zhu

BOC/COF S-scheme heterojunction significantly boosted charge separation efficiency. • The non-radical pathway predominated, facilitating efficient photocatalytic degradation. • Elevated 1 O 2 quantum yield was achieved via optimized charge transfer. • The reduction in toxicity was confirmed via the plant models and DFT calculations. • The non-radical-dominated and radical-assisted synergy achieved efficient TC degradation. The inefficiency of charge separation and the unselective nature of radical-based pathways severely limit the practical application of photocatalysis for water purification. Herein, a BiOCl/COF (BOC/COF) S-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed via ultrasonic assistance. Remarkably, the optimized S-scheme heterojunction significantly enhanced photo-generated carrier separation efficiency, which effectively promoted ROS generation and improved the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) (degradation rate: 91.6%). The research has found that non-radical pathways collectively accounted for 89.11% of the degradation activity, endowing the system with high selectivity. It is worth noting that the BC-20 membrane can efficiently eliminate TC in a continuous-flow wastewater treatment system. Furthermore, BC-20 can degrade TC in an enlarged reactor under natural sunlight irradiation. The three possible degradation pathways were analyzed through Fukui function and LC-MS. The toxicity of the TC solution after being treated with the BOC/COF S-scheme was evaluated using mung beans as a crop model. Through (in-situ) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism and interfacial electric field (IEF) driving efficient 1 O 2 production were systematically elucidated. These findings not only deciphered the interface engineering-mediated non-radical generation mechanism in BOC/COF S-scheme photocatalysis but also advanced its practical application in aquatic environmental remediation. Three-birds-with-one-stone: MIP-decorated MOF/COF hybrid nanoplatform for multifunctional PEC sensing, adsorption, and photocatalytic degradation of patulin

Wenyan Yan,Shuyue Li,Baoqing Bai,Ying Zhang,Jinhua Zhang,Tao Bo,Qinghua Wang,Ying Gu,Yukun Yang,Shuo Wang

A MIP-modified MOF/COF hybrid nanoplatform for PEC sensing, adsorption, and photocatalytic degradation was developed. • The MOF/COF hybrid enhanced photocurrent through improved light absorption and charge separation. • The MIP layer provided high selectivity. • The platform enabled ultrasensitive PAT detection and efficient adsorption-photocatalytic degradation. Rational design of photoactive materials is essential for the sensitive detection and efficient removal of hazardous contaminants. Herein, a visible-light-responsive covalent organic framework/metal-organic framework (COF/MOF) hybrid with uniform COF layers grown in-situ on the MOF surface, followed by the introduction of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer via a sol-gel process, was constructed for the PEC sensing, adsorption, and photocatalytic degradation of patulin. The hybrid architecture enhanced photoelectrochemical performance by facilitating charge separation and improving light harvesting. The resulting PEC sensor exhibited a wide linear range (0.1 nM-1 mM) and a low detection limit (0.055 nM), along with good reproducibility and stability in real samples. Moreover, the MIP/MOF/COF hybrid enabled efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of patulin, driven by photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals. This work provides a promising strategy for the efficient and highly sensitive detection and removal of contaminants. Download: Download high-res image (236KB) Download: Download full-size image

Photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction on an ultrathin TPA-COF/UiO-66-NH₂ heterostructure with enhanced pollutant enrichment and interfacial charge separation

Guanghui Chen,Bolin Li,Zhiguang Xue,Hong Liu,Jiayao Chen,Lei Zhang,Xinguo Xi,Lanqin Tang,Yong Zhou

Constructing well-defined MOF/COF heterostructures that integrate pollutant enrichment with efficient interfacial charge separation remains challenging, as intimate interfacial contact may compromise framework integrity. Herein, an ultrathin TPA-COF/UiO-66-NH₂ heterostructure is fabricated via interfacial self-assembly of exfoliated TPA-COF nanosheets, forming a conformal COF coating while preserving the crystallinity and microporosity of UiO-66-NH₂. Microscopic, thermogravimetric, and nitrogen sorption analyses reveal a continuous ultrathin COF layer with a low yet quantifiable loading (~1.5 wt%) and a BET surface area comparable to that of the pristine MOF. Compared with the individual components and their physical mixture, the assembled heterostructure exhibits markedly enhanced photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction, highlighting the importance of controlled interfacial integration. Comparative adsorption studies, kinetic modeling, and pH-dependent experiments indicate that Cr(VI) enrichment is closely associated with surface-charge-mediated interactions of the amine-functionalized framework. Suppressed photoluminescence, enhanced photocurrent response, and radical scavenging experiments are consistent with improved interfacial charge separation, with photogenerated electrons serving as the dominant reductive species. Band-edge analysis further suggests a staggered energy alignment that is energetically favorable for interfacial carrier transfer. These findings illustrate how combining functional-group-mediated enrichment with controlled interfacial assembly can cooperatively influence adsorption and charge-transfer processes in MOF/COF heterostructures.

Yangcheng Liu,Baoli Xu,Shengxue Wang,Qilin Liu,Zheng Xiang,Wanwei Jiang,Yang Wang

The excessive accumulation of benzophenone (BP) endocrine disruptors highlights the need to develop novel materials capable of efficient removal and precise, simultaneous monitoring of multiple BPs. Based on the characteristics of BPs, an accordion-like NH 2 –MXene-based composite material with rice grain–like 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)-benzene-1,3,5-benzenetricarbaldehyde covalent organic frameworks (TB–COF) on its surface after modification (TB–COF@NH 2 –MXene) was developed. The obtained TB–COF@NH 2 –MXene exhibited rich functional groups, an appropriate pore structure and suitable surface properties. Moreover, it exhibited a high saturation adsorption capacity (292.47–316.23 mg g −1 ), rapid kinetics (25 min) and excellent dynamic adsorption ability (1359–2548 BV). It demonstrated good selectivity and an excellent ability to capture BPs at low concentrations. Notably, dispersive solid-phase extraction based on TB–COF@NH 2 –MXene in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography–diode array detector enabled the simultaneous detection of trace BPs in river water, cookies, vermicelli, milk, coffee, tea and infant formula samples. This study provided practical guidance on environmental and food safety solutions.

A colorimetric - ratiometric SERS dual-mode sensor based on magnetic COF nanoflowers is used for the detection of glucose in food

Yan Sun,Lichun Yang,Leilei Wang,Yi Hou,Qin Luo,Xinglong Tao,Min Xie,Yongjun Hu

Accurate and rapid detection of glucose is of great significance for food safety and public health. In this study, we developed an Fe 3 O 4 @COF@Au(GOx) substrate based on magnetic COF materials. This substrate exhibits excellent adsorption capacity, enzymatic activity, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement effect. This substrate can trigger a color reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and a change in the signal intensity of SERS when glucose is present. The ethanol Raman signal is used as the ratio signal to achieve the dual detection mode of colorimetric - ratiometric SERS. The dual-mode detection method boasts extremely high sensitivity and excellent selectivity with limits of detection for glucose of 0.17 μM in colorimetric and 10.7 nM in SERS. The dual-mode detection method effectively combines the simplicity of colorimetric detection with the high sensitivity of SERS, providing a highly promising solution for the detection of glucose in practical applications.

Ren Qiu,Wendi Mu,Chunyan Wu,Mengdie Wu,Jing Feng,Shengzhong Rong,Hongkun Ma,Dong Chang,Hongzhi Pan

CA125 is a tumor marker which mainly exists in ovarian, the detection for it with high sensitivity is conducive to improve the effectiveness of tumor prevention and control at early state. Multi-layer graphene oxide derivatives from graphene, and has poor conductivity and high stacked properties that limit its further application. Multi-layer reduced graphene oxide frame (MrGOF) was composed of single-layer graphene sheet and exhibited 3D structure with good dispersion, better conductivity and electrochemical properties after multi-layer graphene oxide underwent alkaline peeling and thermally reduction, the modified graphene are easy to load and combine functional groups and metal nanoparticles. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) presents a stable frame and through covalent bond connection and has porous properties to adsorb biomolecules , which allows the immobilization of antibody molecules by the porosity and improve the sensitivity of the detection in sensing field. Through the adsorption of COFs for antibody and the probe labeled with functional graphene, we constructed a sandwich type immunosensor with the new material COF-LZU1 as the platform to anchor the CA125 first-antibody and MrGOF combined with amino group and loaded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as the probe to detect tumor marker CA125. The linear range of detection was from 0.001 U/mL to 40 U/mL, with the detection limit was calculated to be 0.00023 U/mL (S/N =3). The prepared immunosensor showed a good application ability for real human serum, which can be attributed to the adsorption of COF-LZU1 for the CA125 first-antibody, and ability to deliver electrons and signal amplification of AgNPs anchored on the sheet structure of MrGOF.

In situ growth of polyoxometalate in COF for trace monitoring of Ag+ and hepatocellular carcinoma biomarker via a dual responsive strategy

Jinmin Wang,Xin Xu,Limin Zhao,Bing Yan

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) demonstrate a new trend in the field of chemical sensing mainly due to their potential for functional modification, defined pore environment and good chemical stability. Exploring functionalized-COF materials as chemosensors with low detection limits and high selectivity for biologically and environmentally important analytes is a campaign in this field. In this work, the incorporation of polyoxometalate (POM, Eu4W8) into the crystalline architecture a COF (EB-TFP) generates a functional composite material Eu4W8@EB-TFP. This material combines the merits of POM and COF together; it endows COF with outstanding luminescence properties and effectively broadens the sensing application of COF. It points out a new direction to employ POM-functionalized COF materials as efficient chemosensors to monitor trace amounts of Ag+ in environmental and CG (hepatocellular carcinoma biomarker) in biological systems. This work provides new insights into COF-based sensors and inspires the development of more versatile tools for analytical applications.
