Glycerol tributyrate as a low-density lipoprotein plays a crucial role in drug development and food safety. In this work, a novel high-stability fiber optic sensor for glyceryl tributyrate based on the poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and chitosan (CS) composite hydrogel embedding method is first proposed. Compared with traditional functionalization, the lipase in a polymer network structure used in this article can not only avoid chemical reactions that cause damage to the enzyme structure but also avoid the instability of ionic bonds and physical adsorption. Therefore, the PAA/CS hydrogel method proposed in this article can effectively retain enzyme structure. First, the impact of different layers (one to five layers) of PAA/CS on pH sensing performance was explored, and it was determined that layers 1–3 could be used for subsequent sensing experiments. Within the linear detection range of 0.5–10 mM, the detection sensitivities of the one to three layers of the biosensor are divided into 0.65, 0.95, and 1.51 nm/mM, respectively, with the three layers having the best effect. When the number of coating layers is three, the detection limit of the sensor is 0.47 mM, meeting the millimole level detection standard for anticancer requirement. Furthermore, the stability and selectivity of the sensor (in the presence of hemoglobin, urea, cholesterol, acetylcholine, and glucose) were analyzed. The three-layer sensor is used for sample detection. At concentrations of 1–10 mM, the absolute value of the recovery percentage (%) is 82–99%, which can accurately detect samples. The sensor proposed in this paper has the advantages of low sample consumption, high sensitivity, simple structure, and label-free measurement. The enzyme-embedding method provides a new route for rapid and reliable glyceryl tributyrate detection, which has potential applications in food safety as well as the development of anticancer drugs.

In this study, a cesium ion imprinted polymer (Cs(I)-IIP) was prepared by free radical thermal polymerization using 18-crown-6-ether (18C6) as ligand, methacrylic acid (MAA) as functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinking agent, which can be used for adsorption and separation of cesium ions from low-concentration solutions. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm results showed that the adsorption of Cs + fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption of Cs + on Cs(I)-IIP was the monolayer chemical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was 84.21 mg·g − 1 . The selective adsorption properties are performed in Cs + , Li + , Na + , and K + multicomponent systems. The results showed that the Cs(I)-IIP has a high selectivity in the presence of coexisting Li + , Na + , and K + , and the selectivity coefficients ( K’ ) of Cs(I)-IIP for Cs + /Li + , Cs + /Na + , Cs + /K + are 2.1, 1.56, and 1.33, respectively. The high adsorption capacity and selectivity are attributed to the introduction of imprinting technology to form specific Cs + recognition adsorption sites, and the 18C6 cavity was easier to recognize Cs + in the competitive adsorption process. Finally, the Cs(I)-IIP can be regenerated and reused for 10 times with the adsorption capacity only decreased by 8.1%, indicating that the polymer has good reuse performance.

Pathogens and pests pose significant threats to global crop productivity and plant immunity, necessitating urgent measures from researchers to prevent pathogen contamination and pest damage to crops. A natural plant-based antibacterial agent, eugenol (EUG), has demonstrated excellent antimicrobial and insect repellent capabilities, but the characteristics of volatilization and poor dissolution limit the practical application. The nanoization of pesticide formulations holds promise in the development of highly effective pesticides for antibacterial and insecticidal purposes. Herein, a eugenol-loaded nano delivery system (EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS) was synthesized using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as a functional monomer to connect carrier core structure carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with shell structure chitosan (CS), and EUG was encapsulated within the carrier. EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS demonstrated excellent leaf affinity, with minimum contact angles (CAs) of 37.83 and 70.52° on hydrophilic and hydrophobic vegetable leaf surfaces, respectively. Moreover, the maximum liquid holding capacity (LHC) of EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic vegetable leaf surfaces demonstrates a noteworthy 55.24% enhancement compared to the LHC of pure EUG. The in vitro release curve of EUG@CMC-PGMA-CS exhibited an initial burst followed by stable sustained release. It is with satisfaction that the nano delivery system demonstrated exceptional antibacterial properties against S. aureus and satisfactory insecticidal efficacy against Spodoptera litura. The development of this eugenol-loaded nano delivery system holds significant potential for enhanced antibacterial and insect repellents in agriculture, paving the way for the application of volatile bioactive substances.

In this study, a Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst CoWO 4 /CS/BiOCl-10 was constructed by hydrothermal synthesis for the efficient removal of norfloxacin (NOR) contaminants in water. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed that the hydroxyl group in the chitosan (CS) molecule was bonded with the oxygen atom on the surface of CoWO 4 through hydrogen bonding to form a directional charge transport channel, which greatly improved the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of CoWO 4 /CS/BiOCl-10, and the degradation rate was as high as 98.30 % within 90 min under 300 W xenon lamp irradiation. Optoelectronic measurements show that the interfacial potential difference drives electrons to migrate along the Z-path. Density functional theory (DFT) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were used to identify intermediates in the NOR degradation process, revealing the degradation pathway of NOR through piperazine ring cleavage and defluorination. The kinetics of NOR degradation intermediates were revealed using two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) techniques. Rice seed germination experiments have shown that the degraded NOR solution is virtually non-toxic, greatly reducing the environmental impact. This study provides a new strategy for the development of efficient photocatalytic systems through the synergistic regulation mechanism of hydrogen bonding and heterojunction.

The loaded acid–base bifunctional catalysts exhibit good catalytic performance in the synthesis of methyl methacrylate via aldol condensation of methyl propionate with formaldehyde, but they still suffer from deactivation caused by coke deposition. In this paper, coke deposition as well as consequential deactivation behavior of Cs/SiO2 catalyst loaded with various amounts of Al was investigated under different reactant compositions by using nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and Raman analysis. As a result, coke on the catalyst was characterized by amorphous coke deposition, which was mainly composed of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic substances. Al added to the 10Cs/SiO2 catalyst significantly reduced the amount of coke deposition and inhibited the C/H ratio of coke. Appropriate amounts of Al and reactant compositions could ultimately increase the stability of the catalyst. Moreover, the kinetics of coke deposition observed on the Al–Cs/SiO2 catalyst was studied. It was found that the Voorhies equation modified using the variables of reaction temperature and reactants composition could accurately forecast coke accumulation on the 3.5Al-10Cs/SiO2 catalyst under specific conditions.

In this study, astragalus polysaccharide / hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (APS@HP-β-CD) was efficiently loaded into polycaprolactone/chitosan (PCL/CS) by electrospinning and encapsulation techniques. Then, using Span80 as an emulsifier, PCL/CS/APS@HP-β-CD nanofibers were produced through electrospinning of water-in-oil emulsions. The physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of the nanofibrous materials were subsequently evaluated in vitro. Compared with the PCL/CS nanofiber membranes (PC membrane) without added active substances, the tensile test showed that the flexibility of the PCL/CS/APS@HP-β-CD nanofiber membrane (PCA membrane) was significantly enhanced. The thermodynamic test results show that the thermal stability of the PCA membrane is enhanced. The results of 1 H NMR, FTIR, and XRD showed that APS was successfully encapsulated in HP-β-CD. The biodegradation test results showed that the PC and PCA nanofiber membranes had no pollution to the environment and could biodegrade. In addition, PCA membranes exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as outstanding free radical scavenging capacity. The APS release mechanism was determined through the Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic models. Among all the PCA nanofiber membranes, the APS release was more consistent with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model, and the transport mechanism was Fickian diffusion. Finally, this study also optimized the experimental protocol by introducing carboxymethyl groups to modify PCL/CS nanofiber membranes by chemical grafting. In conclusion, the PCA nanofibrous membranes prepared in this study have a strong potential to become wound dressings.

Current smart cling films for pork preservation often face two key challenges: either they lack real-time freshness monitoring capabilities, or their antibacterial components rely on visible light—limiting penetration depth and easily inducing lipid oxidation in pork. To address these gaps, this work fabricated an electrospun bilayer smart cling film with integrated preservation and monitoring functions. The film comprises a hydrophilic outer layer (polycaprolactone [PCL]/polyvinyl alcohol [PVA]/chitosan [CS]/anthocyanin [ACN], for pH-responsive color indication) and a hydrophobic inner layer (PCL as the matrix, loaded with aluminum phthalocyanine [AlPc], for near-infrared-driven antibacterial activity). We systematically investigated the effect of AlPc loading (5 %–15 %) on film performance. Results showed that the film with 15 % AlPc exhibited the highest level of comprehensive properties among the tested groups: its antibacterial and antioxidant capacities were significantly enhanced, alongside improved physical characteristics—hydrophobicity of the inner antibacterial layer increased by 17 % (in terms of water contact angle), and water vapor transmission (WVT) was reduced by 19 %. Importantly, the film displayed distinct color changes (light red to dark red) in pH 3–11 buffer solutions and during pork storage, enabling real-time freshness monitoring. Moreover, it extended the freshness period of pork to 5 days. These findings demonstrate that the prepared bilayer film effectively addresses the limitations of existing cling films, offering significant potential for simultaneous pork shelf-life extension and freshness monitoring.

This study aims to develop PVDF composite membranes with excellent comprehensive performance by hydrophilic modification of PVDF membranes. Specifically, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a porogen and dispersing agent, while β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and chitosan (CS) served as hydrophilic modification agents. A novel β-CD/CS/PVDF composite membrane was prepared using a blending phase transformation method. This membrane exhibits excellent hydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, mechanical strength, self-cleaning ability, antibacterial performance, high separation performance, and biocompatibility. The experimental results indicate that the modified membrane with the optimal ratio (MF-β/C-2/3) achieved a pure water flux of 721.79 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , an underwater oil contact angle exceeding 140°. The membrane exhibited exceptional retention and separation capabilities for various concentrations of MB, MG, RB, MO, Pb 2+ , and Cr 6+ . It achieved a separation efficiency exceeding 99% for both oil-water mixtures and oil-water emulsions, and also demonstrated excellent separation performance when treating simulated wastewater containing multiple pollutants. In addition, ten cycles of separation experiments were conducted for organic dyes, heavy metal ions, oil-water mixtures, oil-water emulsions and simulated wastewater respectively. The results showed that after ten cycles of reuse, the modified membrane retained good separation efficiency and water flux, demonstrating exceptional separation stability. Research has shown that PVDF composite membranes have a promising prospect in the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater. They can simplify the process flow, reduce costs, efficiently intercept pollutants, increase operational stability, and improve treatment efficiency. They have important practical significance in promoting the resource utilization of printing and dyeing wastewater.

Membrane separation is an efficient purification way to treat large quantities of oily wastewater. The core challenge of membrane separation technology in practical applications is to address membrane fouling and establish sustainable separation capabilities. A super-hydrophilic and self-cleaning nanofibrous membrane is designed and prepared in a large-scale, cost-effective and environmentally friendly process for oily wastewater efficient purification. The polyacrylonitrile/chitosan (PAN/CS) matrix membrane material prepared by co-electrospinning method has excellent self-cleaning ability after amorphous titanium dioxide coating (PAN/CS/Ti). The PAN/CS/Ti membrane not only shows super hydrophilicity (WCA ∼ 0°) and underwater super oleophobicity (UWOCA ∼ 153°) but also exhibits excellent chemical stability even in harsh environments without sacrificing separation performance. Due to the uniform modified micro-nanoporous structure, PAN/CS/Ti membrane has significant gravity-driven separation flux with high efficiency and excellent reusability for surfactant-free and surfactant stabilized oil-water emulsion. In addition, PAN/CS/Ti membrane also shows outstanding separation performance with flux > 2200 L·m −2 ·h −1 for high concentration oil-water emulsions (oil content above 20 %). Overall, this study prepared the super-hydrophilic and self-cleaning PAN/CS/Ti nanofibrous membrane by a simple and scalable approach with outstanding separation performances, which can be widely used in various emulsion separation, and practically as the effective solution for oily wastewater treatment.

It is imperative yet challenging to efficiently sequester the 137Cs+ ion from aqueous solutions because of its highly environmental mobility and extremely high radiotoxicity. The systematical clarification for underlying mechanism of Cs+ removal and elution at the molecular level is rare. Here, efficient Cs+ capture is achieved by a thioantimonate [MeNH3]3Sb9S15 (FJSM–SbS) with high capacity, fast kinetics, wide pH durability, excellent β and γ radiation resistances, and facile elution. The Cs+ removal is not significantly impacted by coexisting Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Sr2+ ions which is beneficial to the remediation of Cs+-contaminated real waters. Importantly, the mechanism is directly illuminated by revealing an unprecedented single-crystal to single-crystal structural transformation upon Cs+ uptake and elution processes. The superior Cs+ removal results from an unusual synergy from strong affinity of soft S2– with Cs+, easily exchangeable [MeNH3]+ cations, and the flexible and robust framework of FJSM–SbS with open windows as trappers.

Metal sulfide ion exchangers (MSIEs) are promising for radioactive wastewater treatment due to their soft S 2− -containing frameworks and ion-exchange capabilities. However, their fine powder form and susceptibility to competing ions limit practical application in complex water matrices. Herein, we developed a novel MSIE-based composite, K 2 ZnSn 2 S 6 nanosheets/cationic polyacrylamide (KZTS-NS/CPAM) flocs, integrated with an improved accumulative countercurrent adsorption (iACA) process for effective Cs + , Sr 2+ , and Co 2+ removal. The composite flocs exhibited good settling performance, achieving complete sedimentation within 40 s. Their maximum adsorption capacities ( q m ) reached 106.7, 43.54, and 40.54 mg/g for Cs + , Sr 2+ , and Co 2+ , respectively, close to or even higher than those of KZTS-NS. The adsorption kinetics were rapid, reaching equilibrium within 40 min. Furthermore, the flocs showed broad pH tolerance (removal efficiencies ⩾86.93% for Cs + at pH 4–11, ⩾95.10% for Sr 2+ at pH 3–12, and ⩾96.17% for Co 2+ at pH 1–8) and ultrahigh selectivity for Co 2+ (distribution coefficients up to 6.63×10 6 mL/g under competitive conditions). When integrated with the iACA process, >93% of Cs + and >99% of Sr 2+ and Co 2+ were removed from tap water. Notably, 93.76% of Co 2+ was removed from seawater without microfiltration, benefiting from both the composite’s strong selectivity and excellent settling behavior. The average turbidity of the effluents was as low as 28.6 NTU. Thus, no additional solid-liquid separation step was needed. Mechanistic studies confirmed three key pathways: (1) ion exchange between Cs + /Sr 2+ /Co 2+ and interlayer K + in KZTS-NS; (2) amide complexation by CPAM for Sr 2+ and Co 2+ ; and (3) surface precipitation for Co 2+ forming Co 1.2 Zn 2.8 S 4 . Overall, this material-process integration provides an innovative strategy for radionuclide remediation in actual and high-salinity water environments, offering new insights into the design of processable composite adsorbents and advanced treatment processes.

Periodontitis is a progressive disease that is difficult to diagnose and treat. This causes pain, chewing difficulty, and ultimately teeth exfoliation, caused by harmful oral biofilms. The need for a rapid method for sample enrichment is essential for accurate diagnosis due to the presence of pathogenic bacteria in saliva at low concentrations. Novel vancomycin-grafted chitosan-coated magnetic nanocarriers (Vm-CS-MNCs) were made in this study. They effectively capture and extract DNA from gram-positive bacteria in saliva for PCR gene-sensing. The purpose of chitosan coating was to enhance biocompatibility and water solubility, while vancomycin acts as a universal probe to selectively target gram-positive bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213) . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to validate the successful coating of chitosan and grafting of vancomycin onto magnetic nanocarriers. Significantly, Vm-CS-MNCs achieved a capture efficiency of over 95% at bacterial concentration as low as 10^1 CFU/mL within 20 min of enrichment. Finally, when coupled with PCR, Vm-CS-MNCs demonstrated significant pre-concentration ability for S. aureus in saliva, reducing the limit of detection (LOD) to 10 CFU/mL. This signifies a 1,000-times enhancement in diagnostic sensitivity as compared to PCR without pre-concentration. The bacterial capture ability of these nanocarriers enabled a highly sensitive pathogen gene-sensing method. Graphical abstract
