Developing nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensors that simultaneously deliver high sensitivity, selectivity, and long‑term stability remains a considerable challenge for practical applications. In this work, nanoflower‑like PdO/NiMoO 4 /NiO composites with tunable PdO loadings were fabricated via a hydrothermal method combined with in‑situ impregnation and annealing. The constituent nanosheets measure approximately 200 nm in length and 20 nm in thickness. The optimized sensor with 0.5 wt% PdO loading achieves a response of 59.94 toward 1 ppm NO 2 at 160 °C, representing a 3.7‑fold enhancement over the unmodified NiMoO 4 /NiO sensor, along with good selectivity and long‑term stability. This performance improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of heterojunction formation and PdO catalytic activation, which facilitate charge transfer and surface reaction kinetics. These results demonstrate the potential of the ternary composite for practical NO 2 detection. Graphical The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

Nickel oxide (NiO x ) is a promising hole-transport layer for inverted perovskite solar cells, yet solution-processed NiO x can suffer from morphological inhomogeneity and interfacial defects that limit device performance. Here, we report a chemically regulated chemical bath deposition (CBD) strategy in which an intermediate oxalic acid (OA) treatment is introduced between precursor growth and thermal conversion. During CBD, ammonia-citrate coordination moderates Ni 2+ hydrolysis and promotes the formation of a continuous Ni(OH) 2 precursor film. Subsequent OA treatment reorganizes the loosely stacked nanosheet-like precursor surface, as supported by comparative spectroscopic and morphological analyses, and thermal annealing converts the modified precursor into a smooth and compact NiO film with a Ni 2+ -dominated, NiO-like surface composition. The resulting NiO/SAM stack supports more uniform perovskite film formation and reduced buried-interface non-radiative loss, as evidenced by steady-state PL, TRPL, DLCP, and device-level TPV measurements. Wide-bandgap inverted perovskite solar cells employing the optimized OA-treated CBD-NiO achieve a champion power conversion efficiency of 20.04% with an open-circuit voltage of 1.313 V. The devices also exhibit improved reproducibility and operational stability, retaining 87.0% of their initial PCE after 509 h of continuous MPPT under the specified laboratory conditions. These results demonstrate that intermediate precursor regulation is an effective approach for improving CBD-derived NiO hole-transport layers and their buried interfaces.

Water electrolysis is an important technology for green hydrogen production, but the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) lead to high overall energy consumption. Using the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) instead of OER has been considered an effective route for reducing potential and treating urea-containing wastewater. Here, we introduced Sn into RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti through three methods: electrodeposition, hydrothermal and ion exchange, and constructed a series of NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti electrodes. The systematic characterization showed that Sn was successfully introduced in the form of rutile SnO 2 , and the elements were evenly distributed. The Sn introduction method significantly affected morphology and electrocatalytic performance of electrodes: NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-E prepared by electrodeposition method exhibited a compact nanosheet structure, high surface roughness and abundant exposed active sites, exhibiting the best activity in HER/OER, while NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I prepared by ion exchange method maintained its original morphology, and NiO nanoclusters were evenly dispersed, showing the best performance in UOR. The potential of NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I was only 1.39 V ( vs . RHE) at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , and it operated stably for more than 132 h. When NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I was assembled into a HER‖UOR two-electrode system, the cell voltage at 100 mA cm −2 was only 1.65 V, which was 0.26 V lower than that of the traditional HER‖OER. This work reveals the modulating effect of Sn introduction method on the electrocatalytic performance of multi-component oxides, and provides a scalable solution for the advancement of energy-saving hydrogen production coupled with degradation of urea.

The redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) result from the intrinsic insulating nature of sulfur and the weak interaction between hosts and LiPSs. Constructing heterostructures with built-in electric fields is a promising strategy to accelerate charge transfer; however, the limited active sites and suboptimal electronic configuration at the interface often restrict their catalytic efficiency. Herein, we propose an atomic-level modulation strategy by incorporating isolated Cu atoms into a Mott-Schottky Ni/NiO heterostructure to create a multifunctional electrocatalytic layer for Li S batteries. The introduction of atomic Cu not only induces abundant oxygen vacancies but also triggers a selective upward shift of the d-band center, which synergizes with the interfacial electric field to optimize the electron redistribution. This electronic restructuring significantly enhances the orbital hybridization between the host and LiPSs, thereby strengthening the chemical adsorption and effectively lowering the decomposition energy barrier of Li 2 S. Consequently, the Cu-Ni/NiO modified separator exhibits superior catalytic activity, achieving a high initial capacity of 1353 mAh g −1 and an ultralow decay rate of 0.056% per cycle over 500 cycles at 1C. Even under harsh conditions with high sulfur loading (8.4 mg cm −2 ) and lean electrolyte, the pouch cell delivers a high areal capacity of 4.16 mAh cm −2 and excellent flexibility, demonstrating its great potential for practical applications. Atomic Cu sites are incorporated into the Mott-Schottky Ni/NiO heterostructure to modulate interfacial electron redistribution. Atomic Cu doping simultaneously improves electrical conductivity, optimizes the electronic structure, and enhances catalytic activity. The resulting Cu-Ni/NiO heterocatalyst delivers high polysulfide adsorption capacity and accelerated conversion kinetics, effectively suppressing the shuttle effect and boosting the overall electrochemical performance of Li S batteries. A novel electrochemical sensor (NiO/MoS₂/rGO/GCE) designed for the sensitive detection of methyl parathion (MP) pesticide residues has been developed. The NiO/MoS₂/rGO composite was synthesized via hydrothermal and solvothermal methods, with successful formation and optimized microstructural characteristics validated through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Empirical results demonstrated that the incorporation of NiO markedly augmented both the electrochemically active sites and electron-transfer efficiency, thereby enabling the sensor to achieve an excellent linear detection range of 0.01–10 μg/mL for MP, accompanied by a notably low detection limit of 1.1 ng/mL (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the sensor exhibited superior anti-interference performance, achieving recovery percentages ranging from 97.7 to 108.8% in practical sample analyses (apple juice), with relative standard deviations (RSD) between 2.7 and 5.2%. Overall, this research offers a promising and cost-effective approach for highly sensitive pesticide residue detection, underscoring its substantial potential for broad practical applications. Electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR), as a promising energy conversion technology, also offers ideas for the synthesis of high-value nitrogenous compounds such as nitrites and nitrates. However, the sluggish kinetics of AOR at the anode leads to high overpotential and elevated energy consumption, necessitating advanced catalysts. Here, we engineer a NiO/CuO heterojunction on a copper mesh (NiO/CuO@Cu), which generates a robust internal electric field at the NiO–CuO interface. The built-in electric field facilitates interface electron redistribution and surface electronic state modulation, significantly enhancing the charge transfer and AOR kinetics. The NiO/CuO@Cu catalyst exhibits a low onset potential of 1.38 V vs RHE, along with 95.8% ammonia conversion efficiency and 90.6% nitrite selectivity during 8-h operation at 1.6 V vs RHE. Notably, the catalyst shows excellent operation stability for over 56 h. This work presents interface engineering through heterojunction design as an effective strategy for AOR enhancement, providing valuable insights for developing high-performance electrocatalysts in energy conversion technologies.

Non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors (NEGS) offer advantages over enzymatic counterparts, but conventional supporting scaffolds suffer from poor conductivity, limited surface area, and binder dependence. Herein, we present a strategy to fabricate high-performance, binder-free NEGS based on a hierarchical laser-induced graphene/carbon fiber framework (LW-CFF-B) functionalized with NiO nanoparticles. The 3D porous LW-CFF scaffold is engineered by in-situ carbon fiber felt (CFF) enhanced LIG using 1,4-phenylenediboronic acid (PA) modified liquid benzoxazine (PGE-a) as the precursor. PA serves a dual role in enhancing carbon yield and improving electrical conductivity (sheet resistance reduced from 2.54 to 1.23 Ω/sq). Moreover, PA promotes the formation of a hierarchical porous carbon architecture, which is beneficial for facilitating electrochemical performances of the obtained carbon product. Subsequent laser assisted deposition of NiO nano-layer on LW-CFF-B scaffold yields the LW-CFF-B-Ni electrode. This optimized architecture combines mechanical integrity with exceptional electrocatalytic properties, leading to outstanding glucose sensing performance: ultrafast response (1.2 s), ultrahigh sensitivity (5758 μA mM⁻¹ cm⁻²), a low detection limit (0.16 μM), and excellent selectivity against common interferents. The developed sensor demonstrates appreciable recoveries (91.1% to 107.3%) regarding glucose concentration in beverages. These outstanding analytical results demonstrate significant potential for this sensor in precise glucose monitoring.

Proton ceramic fuel cells offer numerous advantages compared with conventional fuel cells. However, the practical implementation of these cells is hindered by the poor sintering activity of the electrolyte. Despite extensive research efforts to improve the sintering activity of BCZY, the systematic exploration of the utilization of NiO as a sintering additive remains insufficient. In this study, we developed a novel BaCe0.55Zr0.35Y0.1O3-δ(BCZY) electrolyte and systematically investigated the impact of adding different amounts of NiO on the sintering activity and electrochemical performance of BCZY. XRD results demonstrate that pure-phase BCZY can be obtained by sintering the material synthesized via solid-state reaction at 1400 °C for 10 h. SEM analysis revealed that the addition of NiO has positive effects on the densification and grain growth of BCZY, while significantly reducing the sintering temperature required for densification. Nearly fully densified BCZY ceramics can be obtained by adding 0.5 wt.% NiO and annealing at 1350 °C for 5 h. The addition of NiO exhibits positive effects on the densification and grain growth of BCZY, significantly reducing the sintering temperature required for densification. An anode-supported full cell using BCZY with 0.5 wt.% NiO as the electrolyte reveals a maximum power density of 690 mW cm−2and an ohmic resistance of 0.189 Ω cm2at 650 °C. Within 100 h of long-term testing, the recorded current density remained relatively stable, demonstrating excellent electrochemical performance.

The fabrication of micro/nano metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) heterostructures, employing bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs) as self-sacrificing templates, can significantly enhance the sensitivity of the resulting nanocomposite materials. Herein, ZnO/NiO heterostructures derived from Ni/Zn Bi-MOFs were fabricated, which achieved outstanding UV-assisted NO 2 -sensing performance at room temperature. Our experiments reveal a sensitive dependence of the sensing performance of ZnO/NiO heterostructures sensor on calcination temperature. The ZnO/NiO-600 sensor, which was calcined at 600 °C, demonstrated the best sensing performance, achieving 3-fold sensitivity enhancement over pure ZnO. Under UV irradiation, the response value to 1 ppm NO 2 reaches 6.78, with corresponding response and recovery times of 15 s and 40 s, respectively. Furthermore, the ZnO/NiO-600 sensor exhibits an exceptional detection limit as low as 20 ppb and a strong linear response within the range of 20 ppb–1 ppm (R 2 = 0.994). The excellent sensing performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of several factors, including the mesoporous structure of MOF-derived MOS materials, the formation of ZnO/NiO heterostructures, and UV irradiation. This work provides a promising strategy for the development of a novel Bi-MOF-derived MOS heterosturcture that can be applied to photoelectric gas sensor.

s An electromagnetic parameter inversion strategy using a fixed magnetic permeability can effectively predict and guide the design of low-frequency microwave absorption (MA) properties in magnetic/dielectric composite materials. However, permeability instability caused by material modification hinders precise design. To address this issue, this study adopts heterostructure engineering and first uses the experimentally measured permeability of carbon-coated iron nanowires (Fe NWs@C, abbreviated as FC) as a fixed parameter. Through inversion analysis, the target range of dielectric constants required to achieve an effective 3 GHz absorption bandwidth in the low-frequency band was determined. To address susceptibility to permeability fluctuations during dielectric tuning, antiferromagnetic nickel oxide is introduced to construct Fe NWs@C/NiO (abbreviated as FCNO) heterostructures based on FC via co-deposition and laser ablation. Leveraging NiO's antiferromagnetic nature with zero net magnetic moment and its dielectric properties, precise tuning of the dielectric constant was achieved with minimal disturbance to the original magnetic permeability. Experimental results and data analysis indicate that the FCNO1(the atomic molar ratios of Fe:C:Ni =1:1:0.1) absorber exhibits a minimum low-frequency reflection loss of −45.49 dB at a thickness of 4.8 mm, with an effective absorption bandwidth reaching 3.12 GHz at 5.45 mm, consistent with predictions. Furthermore, the FCNO3(the atomic molar ratios of Fe:C:Ni =1:1:0.3) absorber shows only a 2.06% deviation between the predicted and measured frequencies corresponding to its minimum reflection loss, and only a 4.17% deviation in its effective absorption bandwidth. This work proposes an inversion strategy that introduces antiferromagnetic components to achieve dielectric tuning without perturbing magnetic permeability, providing a viable pathway for optimizing the low-frequency MA performance of magnetic/dielectric composite materials.

To understand the underlying mechanism of the interfacial charge transfer and local chemical state variation in the nonprecious-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, a model system of the NiO/CeO 2 heterostructure was chosen for investigation using a combination of the advanced electron microscopic characterization and first-principles calculations. The results directly proved that interfacial charge transfer occurs from Ni to Ce, leading to reduction in the valence state of Ce and increased formation of V O . This would optimize ΔG H* and facilitate the hydrogen evolution process, resulting in outstanding HER performance in 1 M KOH with a low overpotential of 99 mV at the current density of 10 mA•cm −2 and a modest Tafel slope of 78.4 mV•dec −1 for the NiO/CeO 2 heterostructure sample. Therefore, the improved HER performance could be attributed to the synergistic coupling interactions and electron redistribution at the interface of NiO and CeO 2 . These results concretely demonstrate the direct determination of the interfacial structure of the heterostructure and provide atomistic insights to unravel the underlying mechanism of interfacial charge transfer induced HER performance improvement.

It is still a big challenge to design self-protected energetic films or coatings due to the performance degradation under wet conditions, even underwater using environmentally friendly techniques. Thus, this paper firstly proposed an environment-protecting method to fabricate a superhydrophobic nano-Al/NiO energetic film with uniformly distributed structures and high purity via an improved electrophoretic assembly and stearic acid modification. The nano-Al/NiO energetic film with a high contact angle (CA) of 166° displayed superior anti-wettability and self-cleaning ability, and the outstanding exothermic performance of product keeps almost stable even after 10 complete immersion cycles, demonstrating the promising practicality. Our design provide a novel strategy for substantially extending safety, flexibility and adaptability of functional energetic surfaces in real industrial applications.
