Membrane-based pervaporation process is the most time- and energy-saving method for the separation of xylene isomers. However, developing easily prepared membrane with a high separation factor still remains a significant challenge. Herein, the silicalite-1/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) (SPMMM) with enhanced xylene isomers pervaporation separation performance was successfully fabricated via solution scraping method. The compactness and compatibility of the SPMMM were effectively tuned by optimizing the zeolite content and selecting appropriate cross-linker. Results showed that the SPMMM with 40 % zeolite content, cross-linked with fumaric acid (SPMMM-Fu), exhibited the densest and most continuous membrane structure, the lowest swelling degree and the best xylene compatibility. Pervaporation experiments demonstrated that the SPMMM-Fu exhibited superior xylene isomers selective separation performance compared to the templated-silicalite-1/α-Al 2 O 3 membrane. For the SPMMM-Fu, the maximum separation factor was achieved in binary xylene isomer solutions containing 10 % p-X. The total permeate fluxes in the aforementioned binary p-X/o-X and p-X/m-X isomer solutions were about 43.20 g m −2 h −1 and 34.66 g m −2 h −1 , respectively. The corresponding separation factors of p-X/o-X and p-X/m-X were about 34.65 and 39.73, respectively. The third-stage separation experiment demonstrated that the SPMMM-Fu could produce p-X with a purity ≥99.7 % from binary p-X/o-X isomer solutions. Long-term and variable-temperature pervaporation experiments suggested the SPMMM-Fu had excellent structural stability. Furthermore, reproducibility tests conducted on multiple batches of the SPMMM indicated that the SPMMM-Fu could be produced stably. The scalable experiment demonstrated that our strategy could produce large-area SPMMM-Fu (25 × 40 cm 2 ), exhibiting separation performance similar to that of small membrane coupons. This work presented a potentially low-cost and scalable approach for producing highly dense SPMMM with exceptional xylene compatibility, enabling efficient pervaporation separation of xylene isomers from their mixtures.

Addressing limitations of conventional dressings in real-time monitoring and active repair, this study developed a smart, multifunctional nanofiber membrane by electrospinning curcumin (Cur) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. The PVA/Cur membranes integrated antibacterial, antioxidant, and pH-responsive colorimetric properties. Increasing Cur content (0–1.5 wt%) reduced fiber diameter and enhanced hydrophilicity. The PVA/Cur1.0 membrane exhibited optimal mechanical properties (2.84 MPa tensile strength, 43.31% elongation). Biologically, PVA/Cur1.5 achieved a > 5-log reduction within 10 min and over 70% DPPH radical scavenging. Leveraging Cur's pH sensitivity, the dressing enabled visual wound monitoring via a distinct color transition from yellow (acidic, pH 4–6) to reddish-brown (alkaline, pH 7.5–8.9), synchronized with pH-triggered Cur release. Excellent biocompatibility was confirmed (hemolysis < 3%, fibroblast viability > 85%). This work presents an integrated strategy for a smart theragnostic dressing, merging real-time diagnosis and active therapy to advance beyond passive wound care. Graphical

In this study, a PWF/rGO@PVA photocatalytic membrane with high stability and reusability was successfully prepared by employing a blending-coating method. Through the innovative introduction of high thermal conductivity rGO, the membrane achieved enhanced photothermal conversion, which facilitates molecular diffusion and reduces reaction energy barriers. Simultaneously, rGO acts as an electron bridge to promote charge separation and suppress carrier recombination. With an optimal photocatalyst content of 5 wt%, the PWF/rGO@PVA membrane exhibited excellent degradation rates of 0.0112 min⁻¹ and 0.0101 min⁻¹ under UV and visible light respectively, and maintained over 70% removal efficiency after five cycles. Selective laser texturing was then applied to the membrane surface, achieving degradation rates of 96.7% and 93.6% under UV and visible light respectively, and maintained over 90% removal efficiency after five cycles. On one hand, the created periodic microstructures increased specific surface area which provided additional adsorption sites and reaction interfaces and significantly enhanced the anti-reflective properties of the membrane surface. On the other hand, the laser texturing process disrupts the hydrogen bonding network of PVA, thereby suppressing warpage deformation during photocatalytic cycling and improving structural stability. Finally, the dynamic water experiments verified that at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, the photocatalytic membrane retained over 80% degradation efficiency and maintained high photocatalytic stability in dynamic water environments with varying pH and the presence of inorganic anions.

Ultraflexible transparent film heaters have been fabricated by embedding conductive silver (Ag) nanowires into a thin poly(vinyl alcohol) film (AgNW/PVA). A cold-pressing method was used to rationally adjust the sheet resistance of the composite films and thus the heating powers of the AgNW/PVA film heaters at certain biases. The film heaters have a favorable optical transmittance (93.1% at 26 Ω/sq) and an outstanding mechanical flexibility (no visible change in sheet resistance after 10 000 bending cycles and at a radius of curvature ≤1 mm). The film heaters have an environmental endurance, and there is no significant performance degradation after being kept at high temperature (80 °C) and high humidity (45 °C, 80% humidity) for half a year. The efficient Joule heating can increase the temperature of the film heaters (20 Ω/sq) to 74 °C in ∼20 s at a bias of 5 V. The fast-heating characteristics at low voltages (a few volts) associated with its transparent and flexibility properties make the poly(dimethylsiloxane)/AgNW/PVA composite film a potential candidate in medical thermotherapy pads.

To solve the problem of white pollution and petroleum energy consumption, zein/PVA blended fibers were prepared by wet-spinning technology to replace petroleum-based synthetic fibers. Zein has the environmentally friendly and resource-abundant characteristics, but its low viscosity makes it difficult to process via wet-spinning. By enabling the successful wet-spinning of inherently poorly spinnable zein, the introduction of PVA yielded blended fibers that retained more than 81% of the zein content. The zein/PVA blended fibers exhibit a maximum tensile strength of 32.38 MPa, a maximum elongation at break of 561.80%, a moisture regain of 4%, and a dye-uptake rate of 59.68%. This work lays the foundation for using zein/PVA blended fibers as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based synthetic fibers in the textile industry.

Multifunctional membranes capable of simultaneously separating oil–water emulsions and removing organic dyes from complex aqueous systems have garnered considerable attention in recent years. However, the facile fabrication of high-performance membranes that integrate both separation and adsorption functions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a polyacrylonitrile/polyvinyl alcohol–chitosan (PAN/PVA-CS) bilayer membrane with asymmetric wettability via electrospinning. The micro/nanostructures and surface wettability of the as-prepared membranes were precisely tailored by modulating the chitosan (CS) concentration. The resultant PAN/PVA-CS membrane exhibited an overall separation efficiency exceeding 97.5% for mechanically emulsified samples. Notably, the PVA-CS layer demonstrated superhydrophilicity and excellent underwater oleophobicity, enabling the gravity-driven simultaneous separation of oil-in-water emulsions and adsorption of water-soluble Congo red dye without requiring external pressure. The maximum adsorption capacity for Congo red reached 61.3 mg g−1, surpassing that of numerous reported membrane-based and adsorbent materials. Concurrently, the hydrophobic PAN layer in the bilayer structure enabled the separation of water-in-oil emulsions. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for the rational design of asymmetrically wettable multifunctional membranes with great potential for practical application in the purification of complex industrial wastewater containing both emulsified oils and soluble organic dyes.

As a green technology with great development potential, solar-driven interfacial evaporation is considered to be an effective way to alleviate the freshwater crisis and achieve efficient water treatment. However, there are still great challenges in preparing evaporators with efficient evaporation, continuous water supply, and structural stability. In this paper, a low-cost CS/PVA@CNTs composite aerogel solar evaporator was prepared by freeze-drying method. CS and PVA form a stable three-dimensional hydrophilic porous backbone through hydrogen bond interactions, ensuring continuous and efficient water transport. At the same time, the introduction of photothermal CNTs realizes the excellent light absorption capacity and efficient photothermal conversion efficiency of the evaporator. Under the condition of 1 kW·m −2 light condition, the evaporation rate of CPAC-5 samples reached 1.73 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , and the evaporation efficiency was as high as 99.73%. Moreover, beyond its efficient evaporation performance, the CPAC-5 evaporator also exhibits excellent purification capabilities for various industrial pollutants. The experimental results show that the evaporator can effectively purify heavy metal ions (Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ and Co 2+ ), organic dyes (MO, MB) and strong acid and alkaline industrial sewage. It is worth noting that the purified condensate can be used for the germination and growth of soybean and mung bean seeds, which verifies its practical feasibility in agricultural irrigation. This research provides new technical ideas for sustainable water treatment and agricultural irrigation driven by solar energy.

Ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) materials have attracted increasing attention for low-grade heat harvesting owing to their high thermovoltage output under small temperature gradients. However, the development ofn-type i-TE materials remains challenging. Electrode-enabled polarity regulation provides a promising alternative to material-design strategies for developingn-type i-TE devices. In this work, a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based ionic hydrogel was prepared with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and potassium chloride (KCl) through a freeze–thaw process, and its thermoelectric behavior was regulated by electrodes. While the i-TE hydrogel device with typical Cu electrodes exhibitedp-type behavior, replacing the electrodes with graphite paper (GP) electrodes converted the device response fromp-type ton-type. Morphological and spectroscopic analyses suggest that the GP surface selectively adsorbed K+ions through cation–π interactions, suppressing cation thermodiffusion and enabling Cl−-dominated ion migration under a temperature gradient. As a result, the PVA-GP device achieved a maximumSiof −4.36 ± 0.26 mV K−1. In addition, the device exhibited favorable thermoelectric output, with a maximumPFiof 57.668 μW m−1K−2, a room-temperatureZTof 0.0864, and a peak transient power density of 2.33 mW m−2during short-time discharge. Owing to the large interfacial area of the GP electrodes, the device could also function as an ionic thermoelectric supercapacitor with appreciable energy-storage capability. This work demonstrates an effective electrode-engineering strategy for constructingn-type i-TE devices and provides a feasible route for simultaneous low-grade heat harvesting and transient energy storage.

The development of high-performance biodegradable active packaging materials is essential for reducing environmental impact while improving food preservation. In this study, a synergistic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based coating system was developed by incorporating structurally engineered antioxidant-loaded silica particles. Two types of functional carriers were synthesized through a surfactant-free self-assembly strategy: (i) BHT-loaded silica nanocapsules (BHT@SiO 2 -NC) with dense core–shell structures derived from Ph8-PEOS, and (ii) BHA-loaded silica aerogel microparticles (BHA@SiO 2 -AP) with porous spherical architectures derived from Ph8-PEG6-PEOS. The selection of organosilicon precursors was guided by the distinct melting points of BHT and BHA, enabling optimized encapsulation and controlled release behavior. The particles were incorporated into the PVA matrix at loadings of 25–75 wt% to form composite coatings. Structural characterization confirmed well-defined nanocapsules and highly porous aerogel networks. BET analysis revealed that aerogel particles possessed high surface area, which decreased after BHA loading due to pore occupation, whereas the dense-shell nanocapsules exhibited the lowest surface area. The BHA@SiO 2 -AP system significantly reinforced the PVA matrix, increasing fracture stress and elongation at break by 79.8% and 61.3% at 25 wt%, while also enabling tunable air permeability from 1.2 to 42.52 L·m −2 ·s −1 . In contrast, BHT@SiO 2 -NC primarily functioned as a controlled antioxidant carrier with limited influence on mechanical and barrier properties. Importantly, sustained antioxidant activity over 14 days was achieved through complementary mechanisms: release-adsorption synergy from porous BHA aerogels and diffusion-controlled release from BHT nanocapsules. This study demonstrates a versatile strategy for engineering multifunctional biodegradable coatings with tunable mechanical performance, gas permeability, and controlled antioxidant release for advanced food packaging applications. Highlights Architecturally distinct silica particles enable multifunctional PVA coatings. Aerogel microparticles enhance strength and toughness simultaneously. Particle architecture governs structure–property–function relationships. Dual release–adsorption mechanism improves antioxidant efficiency. Nanocapsules provide sustained, diffusion-controlled antioxidant release.

Ammonium dinitramide (ADN) is a high-energy green oxidizer with significant potential for use in solid propellants; however, its practical application is restricted by its strong hygroscopicity and low safety. In this study, morphology control and surface coating were simultaneously addressed by preparing ADN/PVA composite particles with different PVA contents by membrane emulsification. At a PVA content of 5%, the ADN/PVA composite microspheres exhibited favorable morphology and a high degree of sphericity, with no phase transition induced and the crystal structure well preserved. DSC results showed that the initial decomposition temperature of ADN/PVA increased by 21.88–26.50 °C compared to that of raw ADN, and the exothermic peak became narrower, indicating that the energy release of ADN was more concentrated and its thermal stability was significantly improved. Meanwhile, the impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity were reduced by 33.33% and 16.67%, respectively, relative to raw ADN, and the moisture absorption rate was reduced by 87.92%. Therefore, the ADN/PVA composite particles prepared by membrane emulsification exhibit excellent thermal stability and anti-hygroscopicity.

Auricular reconstruction remains a significant challenge in tissue engineering due to the auricle’s complex anatomy and functional requirements. To address the limitations of autologous cartilage grafts, we developed a composite scaffold consisting of porous ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) integrated with a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) double-network hydrogel reinforced with 2 wt% nano-hydroxyapatite (HA). The scaffold was fabricated via powder sintering and physical crosslinking and exhibited high porosity (>41%), a tensile strength of 2.80 MPa, and enhanced water retention. The addition of HA improved both the mechanical strength and antibacterial properties of the composite. The hydrogel component demonstrated stable swelling behavior, hemolysis rates below 5%, and good cytocompatibility. These findings demonstrate that the UHMWPE/PVA-CS/HA composite scaffold, combining the rigidity of a sintered porous framework with the flexibility and bioactivity of a reinforced hydrogel, offers a novel and promising platform for patient-specific auricular reconstruction with balanced mechanical, biological, and antibacterial properties.

Moisture-electric generators (MEGs) can continuously harvest clean electricity from ubiquitous environmental water vapor, making them promising candidates as power sources for next-generation low-power wearable electronics. However, existing MEG devices still face significant challenges in output performance, stability, and environmental adaptability, particularly exhibiting low output voltage and structural instability. To address these challenges, this study presents a high-performance MEG based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/phytic acid (PVA/PA) composite nanofibers. A three-dimensional cross-linked porous hydrophilic network was fabricated via electrospinning, enabling efficient proton dissociation and excellent electrical output performance. Under 97% relative humidity (RH), a single MEG with an effective area of 2 cm2 delivers a sustained open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.81 V and a short-circuit current (ISC) of 3.1 μA, achieving a peak power output of 0.65 μW. Notably, the device demonstrates excellent structural and operational stability, maintaining high-efficiency power generation for over 7 days, and can completely dissolve in water within about 5 h and fully biodegrade under natural conditions within ∼120 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic PVA/PA system exhibits a strong binding affinity toward water molecules, with a binding energy of −1.602 eV, further supporting its efficient moisture uptake and proton dissociation mechanism. Furthermore, the MEG device can be integrated in series or parallel configurations using multiple units to meet diverse voltage and current requirements. It has been successfully applied to capacitor charging and breath monitoring, demonstrating broad potential for use in self-powered wearable electronic systems.
