The ternary graft copolymer PGMA-g-(PS-r-PDMAEMA-r-POEGMA) (TGC) was prepared by a one-pot method involving the quantitative grafting of alkyne-end polystyrene (PS–CCH), poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA-CCH) and poly(oligo(ethylene glycol)methacrylate) POEGMA-CCH onto P(GMA-N3) via click chemistry. TGCs self-assembled and produced stable water soluble PS-centered nano-micelles, and exhibited intriguing collapse upon suitable adjustment of the solution pH and temperature. Hydrophilic rhodamine B (RB) and hydrophobic doxorubicin (DOX) were used to investigate the encapsulation and release properties of the TGC as a drug carrier. The results showed that the TGC exhibited excellent loading capacities for both DOX and RB. For the hydrophilic RB, the TGC displayed two release stages; upon increasing the micelle solution pH from 7.0 to 9.0, the PDMAEMA block aggregated and caused the original stabilizing layer to aggregate and release RB initially; while on further increasing the temperature from 20 °C to 40 °C, the POEGMA block aggregated and caused the second release of RB. The rate and extent of RB release could be changed by matching the numbers of PDMAEMA and POEGMA blocks per graft copolymer. In addition, DOX was encapsulated in the hydrophobic core, upon increasing the temperature and pH, the TGC formed compact layers and inhibited DOX release.

In this study, a double-layer intelligent packaging, which is designed by a layer-by-layer casting strategy, is employed for efficient food preservation and high contrast monitoring. Specifically, novel zein/tannic acid (TA) composite colloidal particles (ZTs) were prepared by manipulating the non-covalent interaction between zein and TA using an easy antisolvent method. The stable oregano essential oil (OEO) Pickering emulsion (ZTOEO) with varying concentrations of ZTs (0.1%–1.0%) was successfully prepared. The optimized ZTOEO, containing 0.8% ZTs, was then integrated into the emulsified hydrophobic layer of the konjac glucomannan (Kgm) matrix. Finally, the carrageenan (Car) matrix containing alizarine (Al) as an indicator was added to construct the bilayer structure. The outer Car/Al layer serves as an acid/base responsive indicator layer, while the inner Kgm/ZTOEO layer functions as a high-barrier bacteriostatic layer. The double-layer Kgm/ZTOEO-Car/Al is integrated through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and dehydration condensation. Kgm/ZTOEO-Car/Al exhibits excellent slow-release antibacterial and antioxidant activity, with a sensitive, repeatable and accurate visual response to pH/NH 3 . The composite film demonstrates good mechanical strength, thermal stability, light blocking, and water vapor and oxygen permeability. The individual inner Kgm/ZTOEO film effectively prolonged the shelf-life and quality of fruits, which the double-layer Kgm/ZTOEO-Car/Al film showed minimal changes in TVB-N (16.65 mg/100 g) even after monitoring and maintaining the shrimp freshness for 48 h. It can be easily processed on a large scale into packaging bags and indicator labels. This packaging is expected to be an eco-friendly, low-cost, bacteriostatic, suitable for applications requiring real-time monitoring and maintenance of fruit/seafood freshness.

The extensive utilization of non-biodegradable plastic agricultural mulch in the past few decades has resulted in severe environmental pollution and a decline in soil fertility. The present study involves the fabrication of environmentally friendly paper-based mulch with dual functionality, incorporating agrochemicals and heavy metal ligands, through a sustainable papermaking/coating technique. The functional paper-based mulch consists of a cellulose fiber web incorporated with Emamectin Benzoate (EB)@ Aminated sodium lignosulfonate (ASL). The spherical microcapsules loaded with the pesticide EB exhibited an optimal core-shell structure for enhanced protection and controlled release of the photosensitizer EB (Sustained release >75 % in 50 h). Meanwhile, the ASL, enriched with metal chelating groups (-COOH, -OH, and -NH 2 , etc.), served as a stabilizing agent for heavy metal ions, enhancing soil remediation efficiency. The performance of paper-based mulch was enhanced by the application of a hydrophobic layer composed of natural chitosan/carnauba wax, resulting in exceptional characteristics such as superior tensile strength, hydrophobicity, heat insulation, moisture retention, as well as compostability and biodegradability (biodegradation >80 % after 70 days). This study developed a revolutionary lignocellulosic eco-friendly mulch that enables controlled agrochemical release and soil heavy metal remediation, leading to a superior substitute to conventional and non-biodegradable plastic mulch used in agriculture.

Phospholipid complexes of alkyl gallates (A-GAs) including ethyl gallate (EG), propyl gallate (PG), and butyl gallate (BG) were successfully prepared by the thin film dispersion method. HPLC-UV analysis in an everted rat gut sac model indicated that A-GAs can be liberated from phospholipid complexes, which were further hydrolyzed by intestinal lipase to generate free gallic acid (GA). Both A-GAs and GA are able to cross the membrane, and the hydrolysis rate of A-GAs and the transport rate of GA are positively correlated with the alkyl chain length. Especially, compared with the corresponding physical mixtures, the phospholipid complexes exhibit slower sustained-release of A-GAs and GA. Therefore, the formation of phospholipid complexes is an effective approach to prolong the residence time in vivo and additionally enhance the bioactivities of A-GAs and GA. More importantly, through regulating the carbon skeleton lengths, controlled-release of alkyl gallates and gallic acid from phospholipid complexes will be achieved.

Partial-thickness cartilage defect (PTCD) is a common and formidable clinical challenge without effective therapeutic approaches. The inherent anti-adhesive characteristics of the extracellular matrix within cartilage pose a significant impediment to the integration of cells or biomaterials with the native cartilage during cartilage repair. Here, an injectable photocrosslinked bioadhesive hydrogel, consisting of gelatin methacryloyl (GM), acryloyl-6-aminocaproic acid- g -N-hydroxysuccinimide (AN), and poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) microspheres loaded with kartogenin (KGN) (abbreviated as GM/AN/KGN hydrogel), is designed to enhance interfacial integration and repair of PTCD. After injected in situ at the irregular defect, a stable and robust hydrogel network is rapidly formed by ultraviolet irradiation, and it can be quickly and tightly adhered to native cartilage through amide bonds. The hydrogel exhibits good adhesion strength up to 27.25 ± 1.22 kPa by lap shear strength experiments. The GM/AN/KGN hydrogel demonstrates good adhesion, low swelling, resistance to fatigue, biocompatibility, and chondrogenesis properties in vitro. A rat model with PTCD exhibits restoration of a smoother surface, stable seamless integration, and abundant aggrecan and type II collagen production. The injectable stable adhesive hydrogel with long-term chondrogenic differentiation capacity shows great potential to facilitate repair of PTCD.

The feasibility of preparing microcapsules of water-soluble ingredient via complex coacervation was explored. Gelatin and gum arabic were used as wall materials to encapsulate glutathione (GSH) through water in oil (W/O) emulsion. Soy lecithin at a concentration of 3 % (w/w) was used as an emulsifier, and the aqueous phase containing 15 % GSH (w/w) was emulsified with soybean oil at a ratio of 5:5 (w/w), which resulted in a stable W/O emulsion. Furthermore, GSH microcapsules produced under optimal conditions, core/wall ratio 1:1, wall material content 1 % (gelatin: gum arabic = 1:1), stirring rate 400 r/min, added 0.25 g glutamine transaminase (TGases) per gram of gelatin, exhibited good morphology, high encapsulation efficiency and yield, which being 92.88 % and 92.10 %, respectively. After comparing the effects of four different oil emulsions on the microencapsulation of GSH, it was found that all had excellent encapsulation efficiency, indicating that no specific oil phase was required for emulsions preparation. GSH microencapsulation by complex coacervation significantly enhanced its stability, reduced the loss ratio of GSH by 23.5 % when capsules were heated at 150 °C for 2 h. Moreover, GSH microencapsulation increased its retention by 23.25 % and 43.88 % during capsules storage at 40 °C and under light exposure, respectively. In addition, GSH microcapsules effectively prevented its degradation during simulated gastrointestinal digestion induced by salivary amylase, pepsin and acidic environments, while rapidly released GSH under trypsin and alkaline environments. This study provided new insights into water-soluble ingredients microencapsulation and its efficient application in the food and nutraceutical industries.

Sustained-release nanofilms incorporated with oregano essential oil (OEO) were developed by emulsion electrospinning using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and quaternary-ammonium chitosan (QAC). The SEM, FTIR and XRD results showed that OEO was successfully encapsulated in the PVA/QAC nanofiber with a diameter range of 158.0–179.6 nm. The incorporation of OEO significantly enhanced the mechanical and barrier properties of PVA/QAC nanofilm, concomitantly mitigating its hydrophilic nature. The prepared PVA/QAC-OEO nanofilms demonstrated excellent antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activities against S. aureus and E. coli (the maximum inhibition zones achieving 23.13 ± 0.72 mm). The release kinetics results showed sustained release of OEO from the PVA/QAC nanofilms, and the release kinetics of OEO adhered to the Fickian + First order dynamics model (R 2 = 0.9570–0.9997), indicating that a combination of random diffusion and polymer structural relaxation influenced the release of OEO. Furthermore, preservation research showed that the PVA/QAC-OEO nanofilms significantly inhibited the rise in pH, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), and total viable count (TVC) in chicken breasts stored at 4 °C, while also maintaining their color and texture properties. Particularly, chicken breasts wrapped in PVA/QAC-OEO 3 film exhibited an extended shelf life for 4 days. Therefore, the PVA/QAC-OEO nanofilms could be a prospective packaging material for meat preservation.

The β-cyclodextrin and short-chain alkyl gallates (A-GAs), which are representative of phenolipids, such as butyl, propyl, ethyl, and methyl gallates, were chosen to form inclusion complexes by the use of the freeze-drying process. In the everted rat gut sac model, HPLC-UV analysis demonstrated that the released A-GAs from inclusion complexes were degraded to yield free gallic acid (GA) (sustained-release function 1). The small intestine membrane may be crossed by both the GA and the A-GAs. A-GAs may also undergo hydrolysis to provide GA (sustained-release function 2) following transmembrane transfer. Clearly, a helpful technique for the dual sustained-release of phenolic compounds is to produce β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes with short-chain phenolipids. This will increase the bioactivities of phenolic compounds and prolong their in vivo residence length. Moreover, changing the carbon-chain length of these β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes would readily modify the dual sustained-release behavior of the phenolic compounds. Thus, our work effectively established a theoretical foundation for the use of β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes containing short-chain phenolipids as new source of functional food components to provide the body with phenolic compounds more efficiently.

Floating delivery system enhances bioavailability of bioactive substances by extending their upper gastrointestinal absorption window. Proanthocyanidins offer various health benefits but have low bioavailability due to high sensitivity and low solubility under intestinal conditions. Based on the noneffervescent multiple-unit floating delivery system, this study developed proanthocyanidins-loaded chitosan-starch floating emulsion gel beads (S-CS-PC) through emulsification and extrusion to improve proanthocyanidins bioavailability. FTIR, XRD and XPS analyses revealed interactions between chitosan and starch. SEM showed the distribution of oil phase and well-developed porous structure within the gel beads. Simulated gastric release profile of proanthocyanidins showed S-CS-PC prevented initial burst release observed in pure chitosan gel beads and achieved sustained release. Additionally, S-CS-PC demonstrated significant antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity, maintaining stability and functionality of encapsulated bioactive substances. This straightforward method with greater scalability and cost-effectiveness, renders the delivery system suitable for industrial-scale production and potential use in functional foods and dietary supplements.

Increasing the nickel content in high-nickel LiNi x Co y Mn 1-x-y O 2 cathode materials (NCM) can boost their energy density. However, the consequence of rising Ni content in NCM consists in the heightened stress buildup, intensified irreversible phase transition and severe electrolyte decomposition, and consequently accelerating the battery’s degradation. In the current study, we have revealed that the 4-fluoro-N, N dimethylbenzenesulfonamide (FBSN) as an electrolyte additive can refrain the typical dehydrogenation of EC. Furthermore, a continuously repaired cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) is designed elaborately on LiNi 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 (NCM90) surface by employing the FBSN as a sustained-release electrolyte additive to enhance cycling stability of NCM90||Li cells. This CEI, composed of high mechanical strength LiF and benzene ring skeleton, along with conductive Li + moieties (S-rich and N-rich species), can be effectively self-repaired in time when damaged, reduce the interaction between the NCM90 and sensitive electrolyte, and mitigate the devastation to the NCM90 cathode surface. As a result, the NCM90||Li cells with 2 % FBSN-containing electrolyte delivers a capacity retention of 90.2 % after 200 cycles at 1C, and 83.1 % after 200 cycles even at higher voltage of 4.5 V, superior than that of Base electrolyte (70.0 % at 4.3 V and 68.0 % at 4.5 V). This study provides an engaging approach to design electrolytes for high-nickel cathodes by autonomously interfacial repair.

Calcium phosphate-based biomaterials have been well studied in biomedical fields due to their outstanding chemical and biological properties which are similar to the inorganic constituents in bone tissue. In this study, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) nanoparticles were prepared by a precipitation method, and used for preparation of ACP-poly(d,l-lactic acid) (ACP-PLA) nanofibers and water-soluble drug-containing ACP-PLA nanofibers by electrospinning. Promoting the encapsulation efficiency of water-soluble drugs in electrospun hydrophobic polymer nanofibers is a common problem due to the incompatibility between the water-soluble drug molecules and hydrophobic polymers solution. Herein, we used a native biomolecule of lecithin as a biocompatible surfactant to overcome this problem, and successfully prepared water-soluble drug-containing ACP-PLA nanofibers. The lecithin and ACP nanoparticles played important roles in stabilizing water-soluble drug in the electrospinning composite solution. The electrospun drug-containing ACP-PLA nanofibers exhibited fast mineralization in simulated body fluid. The ACP nanoparticles played the key role of seeds in the process of mineralization. Furthermore, the drug-containing ACP-PLA nanofibers exhibited sustained drug release which simultaneously occurred with the in situ mineralization in simulated body fluid. The osteoblast-like (MG63) cells with spreading filopodia were well observed on the as-prepared nanofibrous mats after culturing for 24 hours, indicating a high cytocompatibility. Due to the high biocompatibility, sustained drug release, and fast mineralization, the as-prepared composite nanofibers may have potential applications in water-soluble drug loading and release for tissue engineering.

Phenylboronic acid based polymer capsules were confirmed to have glucose sensitivity. In order to investigate the effect of the capsule structural stability on the glucose sensitivity and sustained release of insulin, bio-based capsules with a glucose-responsive property were fabricated based on alginate (Alg) and chitosan oligosaccharide (CS) polyelectrolytes. Chitosan oligosaccharide-g-3-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CS-g-CPBA) that has glucose-responsive properties was firstly synthesized by grafting CPBA to CS. (Alg/CS-g-CPBAm)n capsules were then prepared by layer-by-layer (LBL) processes of Alg and CS-g-CPBAmvia electrostatic interaction on silica nanoparticles (SiO2) and subsequently removing the SiO2 templates. Capsules could be further crosslinked and kept more stable by chelating calcium ions (Ca2+). The sizes and morphologies of bio-polymer capsules were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the (Alg/CS-g-CPBAm)n capsules had a good stability by increasing the multilayers and cross-linking with Ca2+. The size of the capsules increased rapidly with increasing the glucose concentration, due to the formation of a hydrophilic phenylboronic acid-glucose complex and swelling of the capsules. Insulin was encapsulated in the capsules, and the encapsulation efficiency was more than 65%. A cumulative release of insulin was observed from the capsules after being exposed in glucose solutions with various levels. The release speed of insulin reduced after it was cross-linked with Ca2+, which was induced by increasing the tightness of the inner layer. The (Alg/CS-g-CPBAm)n capsules have biocompatibility which was confirmed by cell viability on treatment with mouse embryonic fibroblast through the method of MTT.
