Although the carbon matrix encapsulated functioned LDH should be an ideal model to solve the kinetics and durability issues of cathode materials of aqueous alkaline zinc batteries (AAZBs), the construction of this target structure remains synthetically challenging, due to the thermal instability of LDH. In this work, we develop a redox-driven in situ etching strategy to construct a strongly coupled Cu 2 S/CoNi-LDH heterojunction within an octahedral carbon matrix (Cu 2 S/LDH@C). The strong coupled Cu 2 S/LDH hetero-interface builds a robust built-in electric field (BEF) with 2.39 electrons transferred from LDH to Cu 2 S, which is beneficial for enhanced reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the 3D carbon network serves as a confined framework that mitigates the volume effect during the charging/discharging process. The optimized Cu 2 S/LDH@C electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 235.6 mAh g −1 (1696.0 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 , and maintains 82.1% of its initial capacity after 10,000 cycles. The assembled Cu 2 S/LDH@C//rGO-Zn device achieves a remarkable energy density of 254.7 Wh kg −1 at 0.45 kW kg −1 power density. This redox-driven in situ etching strategy provides a general and reliable pathway for constructing carbon-encapsulated heterostructures, opening a possible pathway for electrode design that simultaneously addresses kinetics and stability issues in advanced energy storage systems.

Exploring efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is critical for improving the performance of alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs). Nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is regarded as a promising candidate but suffers from intrinsically low electrical conductivity that restricts charge transfer during OER catalysis. Herein, we present a facile and scalable strategy to fabricate a NiFe-LDH/Ti4O7 composite OER catalyst by integrating highly conductive Magnéli-phase Ti4O7 with NiFe-LDH, serving as the anode of AWE. The resulting composite preserves the flower-like morphology of pristine NiFe-LDH while achieving a high electrical conductivity of 0.81 S cm−1. Electronic structure analysis shows that the work function difference between NiFe-LDH and Ti4O7 generates a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, driving electron transfer from NiFe-LDH to Ti4O7, which induces band gap narrowing for NiFe-LDH/Ti4O7, thereby accelerating charge transport and thus boosting OER kinetics. The optimal composite displays a high OER activity with an overpotential of 262 mV at 10 mA cm−2, outperforming pure NiFe-LDH (290 mV). When directly spray-coated onto a Zirfon membrane to form the catalyst-coated membrane (CCM), the assembled AWE operates a cell voltage of 1.66 V at a current density of 0.5 A cm−2, which is 40 mV lower than that of pure NiFe-LDH (1.70 V), and maintains stable performance for over 351 h. This work demonstrates that the integration with conductive Ti4O7 facilitates charge transfer in NiFe-LDH-based anodes, providing a strategy for the fabrication of high-performance electrodes for AWE application.

Polydopamine (PDA)-assisted strategy develops a S-NiFe@PDA electrocatalyst with enhanced durability and activity. • PDA achieves a more stable and efficient LOM pathway and suppresses catalyst detachment under high current densities. • S-NiFe@PDA requires overpotential of only 367 mV to achieve 1.0 A cm −2 and exhibited outstanding resilience in an ADT. • S-NiFe@PDA enables stable operation at 1.0 A cm −2 for over 2100 h at room temperature in an AEMWE. Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) electrocatalysts have emerged as promising alternatives to precious-metal materials in alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), offering structural tunability and cost-effectiveness for a decarbonized economy. However, achieving both high activity and stability under industrially relevant conditions remains a critical challenge. In this study, we developed a polydopamine (PDA)-assisted strategy to construct an interlayer between the catalyst and substrate, resulting in a robust NiFe-based electrocatalyst (S-NiFe@PDA) with enhanced durability and activity. The PDA interlayer promotes the formation of lattice oxygen vacancies with strengthened metal-oxygen bonds and highly active Ni species, facilitating a more stable and efficient lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) pathway. Moreover, the strong adhesion and interfacial interaction provided by the PDA interlayer effectively suppress catalyst detachment under high current densities, substantially enhancing long-term durability. The optimized S-NiFe@PDA electrode required overpotential of only 367 mV to achieve current density of 1.0 A cm −2 and exhibited outstanding resilience in an accelerated durability test (ADT), with only an 8.55% increase in overpotential after 3000 cycles, demonstrating its suitability under intermittent renewable energy inputs. When integrated into an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the S-NiFe@PDA enabled stable operation at 1.0 A cm −2 for over 2100 h at room temperature. This work offers valuable insights into the design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with both high activity and industrial durability, facilitating the development of efficient water electrolysis systems. To support smart grid technologies and mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy sources, efficient electrochemical energy storage is essential. Despite their inherent advantages, supercapacitors are constrained by insufficient energy density, limiting their practical deployment. To address this challenge, we report a hierarchical CoMoO 4 @NiMn-LDH core-shell heterostructure grown directly on nickel foam (NF) via a two-step hydrothermal method. The integration of a highly active NiMn-LDH nanosheet shell onto the CoMoO 4 nanorod core synergistically enhances electron transport and ion diffusion. Morphological characterization confirms the formation of a well-integrated porous structure comprising vertically oriented NiMn-LDH nanosheets encapsulating uniformly distributed CoMoO 4 nanorods. The synergistic interplay of structure and composition yields a CoMoO 4 @NiMn-LDH/NF electrode with a high areal capacitance of 17,869.6 mF cm −2 at 2 mA cm −2 , surpassing that of the corresponding single-component electrodes. Moreover, the electrode retains 79.74% of its capacitance at 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating exceptional rate capability, and maintains 99.98% of its initial capacitance after 8000 charge–discharge cycles, indicating excellent structural stability. Kinetic analysis reveals a hybrid charge storage mechanism in which the capacitive contribution progressively increases at higher scan rates, facilitating rapid charge–discharge processes. An asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with this composite as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode delivers an areal capacitance of 2593.25 mF cm −2 and a maximum energy density of 0.922 mWh cm −2 at a power density of 1.6 mW cm −2 . Overall, this study presents a versatile core–shell heterostructure design strategy for developing high-energy, high-power supercapacitor electrodes.

MoS 2 and LDH were successfully integrated into a two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) structure. • PMA with electron-capturing capability was successfully intercalated into the two-dimensional nanosheet layers. • 10% LDH-PMA/MoS 2 shows superior light harvesting capacity, 6.45-fold higher than ZnAl-LDH. Addressing urgent environmental remediation and sustainable energy needs, this study enhances photocatalytic H 2 evolution via rational design of an efficient composite catalyst. In-situ synthesis controllably grew MoS 2 onto LDH-PMA surface, constructing ZnAl-PMA/MoS 2 photocatalytic system. To enhance the targeted and long-term corrosion protection of steel reinforcement against chloride-induced corrosion, a layered double hydroxide (LDH) conversion film is grown on the steel surface with corrosion inhibitor ions loaded into the LDH film. The results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully synthesize a corrosion-resistant film (∼ 1 μm thick) on the steel substrate. The film, primarily composed of Mg, Fe, Cr, O, C, N, and Ca elements, exhibited a uniform surface coverage of petal-like LDH-Inhibitor nanosheets. Among the preparation parameters, a hydrothermal reaction time of 36 h yielded the film with the best corrosion resistance. In simulated concrete pore solution, the LDH-Inh-36 h film increased the critical chloride concentration for corrosion initiation from 0.17 to 0.27 mol/L. These findings indicate that the LDH-Inhibitor film provides effective protection for steel rebar against chloride-induced corrosion, representing a promising strategy for enhancing reinforced concrete durability in marine environments.

NiFe-based catalysts are widely recognized as the optimal binary-metal-based catalyst for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. However, simultaneously improving the OER activity and stability of NiFe-based catalysts remains a challenge because the rapid lattice oxygen consumption of the NiFe-based catalysts leads to irrepressible Ni and Fe leaching and structural collapse. Herein, we report that lattice Co acts as a doping source to induce a pinning effect, effectively promoting lattice oxygen regeneration in NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and thereby simultaneously improving its activity and stability. The Co-doped NiFe-LDH (Co-NiFe-LDH) exhibits high OER performance with a low overpotential of 195 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and maintains stable operation over 500 h at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Experimental and theoretical studies show that introducing Co atoms into the NiFe-LDH catalyst reduces Ni O covalency due to enhanced electron localization between Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals. This electronic modulation simultaneously decreases the adsorption energy of OH/O species and the conversion energy from *OH to *O, thereby enhancing the lattice oxygen regeneration, which dynamically improves the O O coupling processes and maintains the structural stability of NiFe-LDH.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) hold significant promise as antioxidant carriers for enhancing the aging resistance of polymers. However, their widespread application is hampered by inherent limitations such as low antioxidant loading capacity, diminished activity post-intercalation, and insufficient ultraviolet (UV) shielding. This study presents a strategic dual-modification approach: the UV absorber (UV-284) was intercalated into the ZnAl-LDH interlayers, constructing an intrinsic "UV shield" while the hindered phenolic antioxidant (AO) was covalently grafted onto the LDH surface using γ-glycidyl ether oxypropyl trimethoxysilane (KH-560) as a bridging molecule. This process successfully created a synergistic anti-aging system, denoted ULKA, which integrates both UV shielding and radical scavenging functionalities. Results demonstrate that the intercalation of UV-284 reduced the band gap of ULKA from 3.84 eV to 2.88 eV, significantly enhancing its absorption of low-energy ultraviolet light. Furthermore, the introduction of an electron-donating ester group into the antioxidant molecule increased the electron cloud density around the phenolic hydroxyl groups, thereby improving its radical capture efficiency. Incorporating merely 1 wt% of ULKA into polypropylene (PP) via melt blending yielded PP/ULKA composites with superior resistance to photo-thermal oxidation compared to both pure PP and PP containing an equivalent amount of commercial antioxidant Irganox 1010. After 600 h of UV accelerated aging, the PP/ULKA composite retained 85.94% of its impact strength and 81.76% of its elongation at break, significantly outperforming PP/1010. The oxidation induction time (OIT) of the composite reached 22.7 min. Following 28 days of thermal oxidative aging at 110 °C, the increase in the carbonyl index (CI) was merely 0.93%, far lower than the 3.5% increase observed for pure PP. XPS analysis further confirmed that the C = O /C-C intensity ratio increased by only 0.018, a value significantly lower than those of other samples. This work provides a novel design strategy and experimental foundation for developing highly efficient and migration-resistant anti-aging additives for polymers.

Photocatalytic technology offers a promising solution for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater. However, catalysts often suffer from limited light absorption and rapid electron-hole recombination. To address the challenges, we developed a heterogeneous TiO 2 /CoAl-LDH catalyst for photocatalytic degradation of dyes such as Acid fuchsin (AF) and methyl orange (MO) and real wastewater under UV light irradiation. The aligned band structures of TiO 2 and LDH enhanced UV light energy absorption and electron-hole separation, resulting in superior photocatalytic activity. In treating real dyeing wastewater, TiO 2 /CoAl-LDH + H 2 O 2 + UV achieved higher decolorization than UV/H 2 O 2 or catalyst/H 2 O 2 alone under the same operating conditions. The process within the early stage (0–45 min) followed pseudo-first-order kinetics (kₐₚₚ ≈ 1.50 × 10 −2 min −1 ), with a clear H 2 O 2 optimum at 40.8 mM. Excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence showed rapid quenching of protein-like (B/T) and humic/fulvic-like (A/M/C) peaks with blue-shifts under the TiO 2 /CoAl-LDH + H 2 O 2 + UV condition corroborating deeper oxidation and mirroring the ADMI decolorization trend (fast loss of B/T within 15 min, followed by progressive depletion of humic-like emission). This study presents a simple and cost-effective method for developing efficient hierarchical semiconductor materials potentially applicable as photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), as a key process in renewable energy technologies and wastewater treatment, suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics due to its six-electron transfer characteristics, necessitating the development of highly efficient catalysts. In this work, a one-pot method combined with a sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) etching strategy was employed to successfully prepare porous Mo doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (P-Mo-NiFe-LDH), achieving a significant enhancement in UOR performance. Studies revealed that Mo doping altered the microscopic morphology of NiFe-LDH and promoted the transition of Ni 2+ /Fe 2+ to higher valence states (Ni³⁺/Fe³⁺), thereby improving the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the porous structure constructed by NaBH₄ etching not only exposed abundant active sites but also optimized the electron transport pathways. This synergistic effect of morphology regulation and electronic structure optimization enabled P-Mo-NiFe-LDH to exhibit outstanding catalytic performance in a 1 M KOH + 0.33 M urea electrolyte: a current density of 10 mA•cm⁻² was achieved at just 1.39 V (vs. RHE), with a Tafel slope of 38.7 mV•dec⁻¹, demonstrating a clear advantage over most reported NiFe based catalysts. This catalytic potential is 90 mV lower than that of the water oxidation reaction, offering certain energy-saving benefits. The synergistic strategy of surface pore structures and heteroatom doping in this work provides new insights for designing high-performance LDH-based electrocatalysts.

NiFe layered double hydroxides nanoflakes decorated montmorillonite (MMT@NiFe LDH) was successfully prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method . The 2D-2D growth MMT@NiFe LDH was utilized as an effective adsorbent for removal of anionic dye of methyl orange (MO) and cationic dye of methylene blue (MB). The mole ratio of Ni 2+ /Fe 3+ could quite influence the interlayer spacing, surface area per unit charge and the ultrathin hexagonal laminated morphology of NiFe LDH decorated on the surface of MMT. Various characterization techniques were conducted to identify it, such as XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA, BET, XPS and SEM. Under the optimal conditions, the Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacities for MO and MB are 108.80 mg g −1 and 99.18 mg g −1 , respectively. Adsorption kinetics for MO and MB are both verified to be fit in with pseudo-second-order model. This work suggests a facile pathway to synthesize desirable bifunctional adsorbent for cationic and anionic dyes, which provides the potential application for the actual wastewater purification.

CoNi-LDH/PtNPs synergistically enhances Hb immobilization and electron transfer. • Hb serves as the recognition element for simplified MP detection. • The sensor shows excellent selectivity, repeatability, and stability. • Good accuracy and precision for MP detection in real foods were achieved. In this study, a flower-like Co Ni bimetallic layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH) with a high specific area was synthesized, and CoNi-LDH/PtNPs composites were fabricated by self-assembling PtNPs onto the LDH surface. The resulting composites were employed to construct an electrochemical biosensing interface for the efficient detection of methyl parathion (MP). The porous CoNi-LDH, combined with the high conductivity of PtNPs, provided a suitable microenvironment for hemoglobin (Hb) immobilization, preserve bioactivity while accelerating electron transfer. This synergy significantly enhanced electrochemical response, improving detection sensitivity. The developed biosensor exhibited a linear response to MP in the range of 1–110 ng mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.38 ng mL −1 . In the analysis of vegetable samples, the sensor demonstrated reliable analytical performance, yielding recoveries of 91.1–102.1% with RSDs below 8.0% which were matched HPLC results ( R 2 = 0.9949). This work offers a practical electrochemical strategy for monitoring MP residues in agricultural products, demonstrating promising application prospect.
