Amine modified potassium-based composite adsorbents prepared by spray granulation method for enhanced CO2 capture performance

Yueyue Gao,Yiqian Yao,Chuanwen Zhao,Pu Huang,Yafei Guo,Jian Sun

The capture of CO 2 from flue gas after combustion using solid sorbents is one of the efficient options for reducing CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel-fired power plants. To satisfy the requirement of large quantities flue gas treatment, the CO 2 capture capacities of the solid sorbents must be focused on. In this study, K 2 CO 3 /Al 2 O 3 adsorbents were prepared via spray granulation, achieving an optimal CO 2 adsorption capacity of 1.89 mmol/g at a potassium carbonate loading of 30 wt%. To address the limitations of potassium-based adsorbents, we further enhanced the performance by incorporating polyethyleneimine (PEI), an amine-functionalized material known for its high CO 2 affinity, in the K30Al adsorbent. A series of potassium-amine composite adsorbents were synthesized with varying PEI loadings (1 wt%, 3 wt%, 5 wt%, and 7 wt%). Remarkably, a synergistic effect between K 2 CO 3 and PEI was observed, with the 5 wt% PEI loading yielding the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.19 mmol/g, representing a 16 % improvement over the unmodified adsorbent. This represents a novel K30Al-P5 composite adsorbent successfully fabricated through deposition of a small amount of PEI onto pre-synthesized K30Al substrate via the spray granulation method. Comprehensive characterization, including adsorption capacity, cyclic stability, and structural properties, revealed that the enhanced performance is attributed to the optimized interaction between K 2 CO 3 and PEI, which facilitates CO 2 chemisorption and diffusion. This study not only demonstrates a significant improvement in CO 2 capture efficiency but also provides a scalable and cost-effective strategy for designing high-performance adsorbents.

Recyclable Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-DTC@Au-Ag nanocomposites as a SERS platform for sensitive detection of thiram on fruit surfaces

Tianna Wu,Shuo Yang,Wei Feng,Kaiyue Li,Yanru Li,Lili Wang,Rui Chen,Xiaodong Yang,Lulu Liu,Donglai Han

Equipped with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect and magnetic manipulation capacity, a new paradigm of recyclable SERS substrates based on Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) @SiO 2 @PEI-DTC adhesive layer @Au-Ag alloy quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared via engineering hydrothermal and seed deposition techniques. The SERS performance and uniformity of those substrates with different gold-silver (Au-Ag) weight ratios were evaluated by 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) molecules, revealing that the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of all substrates were less than 12 %, with the optimal SERS substrate achieving an enhancement factor (EF) of up to 1.39 × 10 5 . This phenomenon can be attributed to the magnetic core and plasmonic resonance properties of Au-Ag alloy QDs, which result in abundant interparticle hotspots in the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @PEI-DTC@Au-Ag (FSPAA) nanocomposites. Furthermore, the optimal FSPAA nanocomposite was employed as a SERS substrate for rapid non-destructive detection of thiram on fruit surfaces. The SERS signal intensity exhibited a robust manifesting a linear association with thiram concentration within the span of 1 × 10 −4 to 1 × 10 −9  M, and the minimal detectable concentration was 1.04 × 10 −10  M. The FSPAA core–shell nanocomposites exhibit high reusability and reliability and hold great promise for the practical applications in on-site assessment of food/environmental safety, as well as in spectroscopic identification of molecules adsorbed onto fruit surfaces.

Fabrication of coaxially electrospun PEI@PVDF-HFP fibrous membrane as flame-retardant and anti-shrink separator for lithium-ion battery

Yun Zhang,Runhe He,Yongbing Li,Hao Liu,Haihui Liu,Xing-Xiang Zhang

A novel core–shell nanocomposite fiber membrane was fabricated in this work by coaxial electrospinning using poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as shell material and polyetherimide (PEI) as core material. The PEI core has good heat resistance and mechanical strength, serving as a stable skeleton support. At the same time, the gel shell is conducive to enhancing the electrolyte affinity, thereby promoting the rapid transmission of Li + . As a result, the Li/LiCoO 2 batteries with the fabricated separator present an excellent first discharge capacity of 178.8 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and capacity retention rate of 89.7 % after 200 cycles. Even running at high temperature (65 °C), the PEI@PVDF-HFP separator still enables a steady charging/discharging performance. Therefore, the PEI@PVDF-HFP nanocomposite separator can be an extraordinary candidate for high-safety lithium-ion batteries.

Functionalization of SF/HAP Scaffold with GO-PEI-miRNA inhibitor Complexes to Enhance Bone Regeneration through Activating Transcription Factor 4

Lingling Ou,Yong Lan,Zhiqiang Feng,Longbao Feng,Junjie Yang,Yu Liu,Liming Bian,Jiali Tan,Renfa Lai,Rui Guo

Evidence indicates that microRNAs (miRNAs) play vital roles in regulating osteogenic differentiation and bone formation. Methods : Here, we show that a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) complex efficiently loaded with the miR-214 inhibitor is assembled into silk fibroin/hydroxyapatite (SF/HAP) scaffolds that spatially control the release of the miR-214 inhibitor. Results : SF/HAP/GO scaffolds with nanosized GO show high mechanical strength, and their hierarchical microporous structures promote cell adhesion and growth. The SF/HAP/GO-PEI scaffolds loaded with mir-214 inhibitor (SF/HAP/GPM) were tested for their ability to enhance osteogenic differentiation by inhibiting the expression of miR-214 while inversely increasing the expression of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) and activating the Akt and ERK1/2 signaling pathways in mouse osteoblastic cells (MC3T3-E1) in vitro . Similarly, the scaffolds activated the osteoblastic activity of endogenous osteoblast cells to repair critical-sized bone defects in rats without the need for loading osteoblast cells. Conclusion : This technology is used to increase osteogenic differentiation and mineralized bone formation in bone defects, which helps to achieve cell-free scaffold-based miRNA-inhibitor therapy for bone tissue engineering.

Morphology-controlled synthesis and optimization of gold nanobipyramids, and comprehensive evaluation of the thermochemotherapeutic performance of AuNBP@mPDA@PEI nanocomposites

Zezhong Cao,Lei Sun,Zhen Ma,Xu Zhang,Yanbao Zhao,Zhihua Wang

The discovery of gold nanoparticles as precious-metal photothermal materials has aroused great interest in morphology regulation, especially in the emerging anisotropic morphology of gold nanoparticles. In this study, the influence of the local surface plasmon resonance effect on the photothermal conversion ability of gold nanoparticles with different morphologies is investigated. This study is based on gold nanobipyramids—a nanostructure with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency. It compares two strategies for preparing gold nanobipyramids and explores how morphology and growth mechanisms are regulated by varying the gold seed concentration and the ascorbic acid-to‑silver nitrate molar ratio. Subsequently, the biocompatibility of the nanoparticles was enhanced by capping mesoporous polydopamine onto the periphery of the gold nanobipyramids, and their chemotherapeutic capability was endowed via loading the drug doxorubicin (DOX) into the mesoporous structure; the drug loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency were 45.1% and 82.0%, respectively. In order to improve the therapeutic efficacy of the nanocarriers in the tumor microenvironment, the pH-responsive property of polyethylenimine (PEI) was incorporated into AuNBP@mPDA to confer targeted drug release capability. Surprisingly, the PEI layer effectively seals the mesoporous structure and prevents premature drug release, thereby enabling precise drug delivery. After a series of structural characterizations and performance evaluations, the final AuNBP@mPDA-DOX@PEI nanocarrier was confirmed to exhibit excellent thermochemotherapeutic performance (reduction of Hela S3 cells to 27.1%) and pH-responsive drug release (38.60% cumulative release at pH 5.0), demonstrating its potential for cancer therapy. This combination of photothermal–chemotherapeutic efficacy, pH-responsive release, and high biocompatibility renders the nanocarrier promising for cancer treatment.

Engineering an organic-inorganic hybrid interface with abalone shell-derived aragonite platelets and PEI for enhanced carbon fiber/epoxy composites

Yinchuan Pu,Xiang Cai,Wei Xu,Hongyu Wang,Mengyuan Hao

Using PEI as a binder to stably anchor natural aragonite sheets on CFs, creating a novel organic-inorganic hybrid interface. • The composite exhibited enhancements in IFSS, ILSS, and impact strength by 42.03%, 25.73%, and 46.81%, respectively. • The fractured surface exhibited unique roughness and fragmentation, which suppressed fiber pull-out while dissipating impact energy. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) require effective interfacial design to achieve both high strength and toughness. Here, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used to bridge and anchor abalone shell-derived aragonite platelets (ASP) onto polydopamine-modified carbon fibers, forming an organic-inorganic hybrid interphase. PEI facilitated ASP immobilization, while the resulting modification increased the fiber surface energy by 78.9% without compromising the intrinsic fiber strength. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS), interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and impact strength of the resulting CFRPs reached 102.89 MPa, 101.16 MPa, and 91.52 kJ/m², respectively, all exceeding those of the unmodified and individually modified systems. SEM observations supported the improved interfacial adhesion, accompanied by a rougher and more fragmented impact-fractured morphology. The PEI-ASP hybrid interphase improves interfacial load transfer and suppresses premature debonding, while the rigid ASP platelets may impede local crack propagation, promoting more distributed damage and greater impact-energy dissipation. The direct and efficient utilization of such natural aragonite platelets on CFs provides a simple and promising strategy for enhancing the overall performance of CFRPs. Construction of dual-functional UGFM-PEEKWC-PEI composite membrane: Synergistic realization of high-flux ultrafiltration and efficient emulsion oil separation

Xiaowei Sun,Zhibo Wu,Yunwu Yu,Xin Liu,Ying Ma,Lili Gao,Yanfeng Fang,Peng Liu,Xiangyu Li,Lihua Wang

Leveraging the excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability and structural tunability of the PEEKWC-PEI system, an UGFM-PEEKWC-PEI composite ultrafiltration membrane was fabricated by incorporating an ultrafine glass fiber membrane (UGFM) in conjunction with a controlled casting-solution dilution strategy. The influences of UGFM incorporation on the membrane microstructure, mechanical performance, surface wettability, and permeation behaviour and separation efficiency were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that introducing UGFM effectively establishes a low-resistance mass-transfer pathway within the composite ultrafiltration membrane, markedly improving its mechanical properties and structural stability. Among the composite ultrafiltration membranes, the MGF-10 membrane exhibits the best overall performance, with the water contact angle reduced to 36.5° and the underwater oil contact angle reaching 138.7°, indicating pronounced hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. At 3 bar, the membrane demonstrates a pure-water permeance of 1086.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 , with the pure-water flux reaching 5093.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 at 5 bar. The MGF-10 composite ultrafiltration membrane achieves a Congo red (CR) rejection of 98.1% at 3 bar, and maintains consistently high rejection toward dye solutions over a variable pressure range of 1–5 bar. Notably, even under high-salinity conditions (60 g/L Na 2 SO 4 ), the composite ultrafiltration membrane retains excellent dye separation capability, delivering a rejection of 91.7%, highlighting its promise for dye desalination via ultrafiltration. Results from static adsorption and dynamic filtration suggest that the composite ultrafiltration membrane predominantly removes dyes via a size-sieving mechanism, with adsorption providing an auxiliary contribution during the initial stage of filtration. Moreover, owing to interfacial regulation enabled by the formation of a surface hydration layer, the composite ultrafiltration membrane delivers excellent performance in surfactant-free oil-water separation, achieving separation efficiencies of up to 99.9% across multiple oil phases and exhibiting good operational stability over repeated cycles. Overall, the UGFM-reinforced architecture and casting-solution dilution control act synergistically to reduce mass-transfer resistance, enhance permeation flux, and sustain high rejection, offering a viable strategy for the structural design of high-performance composite ultrafiltration membranes.

Removal of Congo Red, hexavalent chromium and divalent copper by electrospun PAN/PEI/polylysine nanofibrous membranes: Insights into adsorption mechanisms

Zongrui Zhang,Guona Bai,Zihao Zhao,Mengqun Li,Qin Li,Jiangang Gao,Xinyu Wang

Water pollution caused by organic dyes and heavy metals severely threatens ecological security and human health. Herein, a novel polyacrylonitrile/ polyethyleneimine/ε-polylysine (PAN@PEI@ε-PL) electrospun nanofibrous membrane (NF) was fabricated for synchronous removal of Congo Red (CR), divalent copper (Cu(II)), and hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis confirmed that the membrane possessed a typical mesoporous structure with a specific surface area of 0.2283 m 2 /g, average pore diameter of 28.82 nm, and total pore volume of 0.001645 cm 3 /g, providing abundant adsorption sites and fast mass transfer channels. Under optimal conditions (optimal pH: CR = 6, Cu(II) = 5, Cr(VI) = 3; adsorption equilibrium within 120 min; 35 °C), the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities of PAN@PEI@ε-PL NF for CR, Cu(II), and Cr(VI) reached 1311.6 mg/g, 376.1 mg/g and 490.8 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms well fitted the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, indicating monolayer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic studies revealed the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism was synergistically driven by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, Cr(VI) reduction (65.68% Cr(VI) converted to Cr(III)), and coordination interaction. After 5 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the removal efficiencies still remained 77.8% (CR), 56.5% (Cu(II)), and 67.4% (Cr(VI)). Benefiting from high specific surface area, rich amino/amide active sites, favorable mesoporous structure, and excellent stability, PAN@PEI@ε-PL NF shows great potential in simultaneous purification of dye-heavy metal composite wastewater.

Promoting microbial fermentation in lignocellulosic hydrolysates by removal of inhibitors using MTES and PEI-modified chitosan-chitin nanofiber hybrid aerogel

Wen Liu,Peng Liu,Liang Liu,Huimin Sun,Yimin Fan,Cuiqing Ma,Jia Ouyang,Zhaojuan Zheng

To further enhance the removal efficiency for furanic and phenolic compounds in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, a new detoxification strategy was proposed, which retained fermentable sugars and promoted the growth and metabolism of subsequent bacteria. The best adsorbent (P/M-CCA) was prepared by hybrid chitosan-chitin nanofiber , graft modification with polyethylenimine, and silanization with methyl triethoxylsilane in order. Taken corn cob hydrolysate as object, the removal rates of HMF and furfural were 85.1 % and 99.0 %, respectively. The removal rates of six out of nine phenolic inhibitors were 100 %, and the other three were more than 65 %. Even better, the retention rates of glucose and xylose were both 100 %. In contrast to no growth in undetoxified hydrolysates, Bacillus coagulans grew normally in detoxified hydrolysates, and lactic acid reached 19.1 g/L after 12 h fermentation. P/M-CCA achieves both removal of multiple inhibitors and retain sugars, which would promote the valorization of highly toxic lignocellulosic hydrolysates.

Mussel-inspired co-deposited L-DOPA/PEI/CNTs/PVDF membrane with hierarchically gradient pores for efficient oil/water emulsion separation

Bang Li,Juncai Ren,Jiayi Xie,Junfeng Wu,Yingchun Wang,Xiaogang Gu,Xiaoxian Hu,Xiang Guo,Zuwen Liu,Yanbin Yun,Chunli Li,Xiying Hao,Shasha Chen,Shiqiang Yin

The discharge of oily wastewater and industrial wastewater poses serious threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health, highlighting the urgent need for advanced antifouling membranes capable of efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation. Unlike conventional surface coating or single-component modification strategies, herein, we report a facile strategy to transform hydrophobic PVDF membranes into superhydrophilic ones with hierarchically gradient pores. This approach distinctively exploits mussel-inspired L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), rather than dopamine, in combination with polyethyleneimine (PEI) co-deposition and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanostructuring, forming a highly stable, multifunctional hydrophilic network that anchors CNTs while synergistically regulating pore size, pore distribution, and surface wettability. As a result, the average pore size decreased from 0.4075 μm to 0.2883 μm, enhancing selective permeability. The optimized L-DOPA/PEI/CNTs/PVDF membrane exhibited an ultrahigh pure water flux of 5367.9 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 and achieved over 99 % rejection of diverse surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated excellent antifouling, consistently maintaining ≥98 % oil rejection over seven cycles, attributed to the formation of a compact hydration layer. By integrating bio-inspired adhesion chemistry with nanostructured pore-gradient engineering, this study provides a scalable and environmentally relevant route for fabricating high-performance separation membranes, offering strong potential for sustainable oily wastewater treatment and resource recovery applications.

Enhancing antibacterial and anticorrosion properties of 304 stainless steel surfaces: a multi-modification approach based on DA/PEI/SiO2/AMPs

Liu De,Wang Huming,Dong Xuxu,Liu Xiaodan,Dosta Sergi,Zhang Chao,Cao Pan

Marine fouling can cause a series of hazards in the marine industrial field, and the traditional antifouling methods do not fulfill the green antifouling requirement. Herein, a novel DA/PEI/SiO 2 /antibacterial peptide antifouling coating was prepared by a multi-modification approach. Initially, the nanocoatings were prepared by depositing DA, PEI, and SiO 2 on the dopamine (DA)-modified 304 stainless steel (SS) surface, and finally, the DA/PEI/SiO 2 /AMPs composite coatings were prepared by grafting antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). The surfaces of SS before and after modification were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurement, and 3D optical profilometer. SSN-1 cells were used to evaluate the cytocompatibility of the modified surface. The results revealed that the cells cultured on the modified surface still maintained a good adhesion morphology, demonstrating the superior cytocompatibility of the composite coating. The anti-biofilm and antimicrobial properties of the modified samples were evaluated using Vibrio natriegens . The antibacterial efficiency of SS-DA/PEI/SiO 2 surfaces before and after AMPs modification reached 78.39 and 95.90%, and anti-biofilm efficiency of AMPs modified surface achieved 72.87% corresponding to 44.19% of SS-DA/PEI/SiO 2 . The successful grafting of AMPs improved the antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of the modified sample surfaces. Electrochemical and stability tests indicated that the modified sample surfaces exhibited excellent corrosion resistance and antifouling stability properties. This research could provide a novel green anti-fouling and anti-corrosion strategy for the marine industry and other related fields.
