Size Dispersion of the Filler Particles and Its Consequences on the Light-Extinction Properties of TiO2/PET Nanocomposite Fibers

Xianan Qin,Xiaomin Liao,Hao Zhang,Huan Jin,Shunli Xiao,Wangyang Lu

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have been extensively used to modify the optical properties of various types of materials. In particular, they have been intensively loaded onto polymer fibers to quench the light reflection. In situ polymerization and online addition are two common strategies for fabricating TiO2-loaded polymer nanocomposite fibers. The former does not require separate preparation of masterbatches as the latter does and therefore has its advantages in terms of decreasing the fabrication steps and economic costs. Moreover, it has been found that in situ-polymerized TiO2-loaded polymer nanocomposite fibers (e.g., TiO2/poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers) usually have enhanced light-extinction properties over those prepared by the online addition process. Intuitively, there should be a difference in the filler particle dispersion for the two fabrication processes. This hypothesis has not yet been tackled due to the technical difficulty in acquiring the three-dimensional (3D) filler morphology inside the fiber matrix. In this paper, we report a study using the powerful focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) with a resolution of 20 nm to directly acquire the 3D microstructure of TiO2/poly(ethylene terephthalate) nanocomposite (TiO2/PET) fibers. This microscopy technique allows us to characterize the particle size statistics and the dispersion inside TiO2/PET fibers. We have found that the particle size of TiO2 inside the fiber matrix can be well modeled by Weibull statistics. Surprisingly, we find that TiO2 nanoparticles form more significant agglomeration in the in situ-polymerized TiO2/PET fibers. This observation is contrary to our common understanding of the two fabrication processes. Namely, slightly altering the particle dispersion with increased TiO2 filler size helps improve the light-extinction properties. The slightly increased filler size may have altered the Mie scattering between the nanoparticles and the incident visible light, leading to enhanced light-extinction properties of in situ-polymerized TiO2/PET nanocomposite fibers.

Understanding the relationship between the geometric characteristics and the Weibull size statistics of particles in SiO2/PET polymer composites

Xianan Qin,Huan Jin,Xiaomin Liao,Shunli Xiao,Wangyang Lu

Weibull statistics has been found to characterize the size distribution of aggregates in many dispersing systems, including the filler size in polymer composites. However, the underlying physical meaning of this size distribution model remains elusive. In this paper, we present a theory for the Weibull statistics of the particle size in polymer composites which bridges the particle geometric characteristics and the shape parameter. The theory has been tested on SiO 2 /poly(ethylene terephthalate) (SiO 2 /PET) polymer composite whose filler structure is either hollow or solid. We show that Weibull statistics with shape parameter at 2 and 3 characterizes the size of hollow and solid fillers, respectively. The scaling law behind the Weibull statistics allows the size distribution of different structured particles to fall into a master distribution, i.e. the Laplacian distribution, which can be explained by maximizing the information entropy with constraint set on the mean scaled particle size.

A facile, alternative and sustainable feedstock for transparent polyurethane elastomers from chemical recycling waste PET in high-efficient way

Mengyuan Pu,Xing Zhou,Xiaohui Liu,Changqing Fang,Dong Wang

Polymers with excellent optical and mechanical performance fabricated from renewable resources, have been paid an increasing attention in recent years. Here, high-performing polyurethane elastomers with significant mechanical properties, crystallinity, excellent stretchability and good transparency are prepared by a synergistic molecular design in the soft and hard segments. Using the liquid glycolysis degradation product (LGOP) as a chain extender, polyurethane elastomer is synthesized from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste bottles. The results suggest that the degradation products from waste PET can be directly used as feedstock for preparing polyurethane elastomers with significant performance. The polyurethanes exhibited excellent optical transparency of near 90%, and can be stretched up to 670% without any treatment to return to original size. It is assumed that the symmetrical hard domain composed of aromatic rings and ester groups in LGOP creates sufficient chain fluidity for the dynamic exchange of hydrogen bonds and urethane. This paper has devoted to achieve a complete and mature system from waste PET to polyurethane products, to create a closed loop of waste PET plastic recycling and regeneration, and to realize the polyurethane industrial chain of raw material self-supply.

Preparation of high-performance polyurethane elastomers via direct use of alcoholyzed waste PET by high molecular weight polyester diols

Li Liu,Panpan Hao,Ruiqi Zhang,Yujin Zhang,Qing Zhou,Xingmei Lu,Dongxia Yan,Yi Li,Chunyan Shi

Products obtained by alcoholysis of waste PET are promising raw materials for the synthesis of polyurethane elastomers (PUEs). Alcoholysis of PET by low molecular weight diols such as ethylene glycol yields low molecular weight products. The latter need to be polymerized to high molecular weight polyols which are subsequently used as soft segments for the synthesis of PUEs. This work aims to look for suitable high molecular weight diols for the alcoholysis of waste PET to yield high molecular weight products which can be directly used as soft segments for the synthesis of PUEs. This approach allows to save the polymerization step for the formation of high molecular weight polyols. Specifically, polyester diols such as polycaprolactone diol (M n = 2000) were used for the alcoholysis of waste PET. The resulting PUEs exhibited very good mechanical properties: a tensile strength of up to 40.95 MPa, an elongation at break of up to 1219%, and a toughness of up to 237 MJ·m −3 , along with good transparency and thermal stability.

Trash to treasure: electrocatalytic upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic to value-added products by Mn0.1Ni0.9Co2O4-δ RSFs spinel

Yan Mao,Shiying Fan,Xinyong Li,Jugong Shi,Mufan Wang,Zhaodong Niu,Guohua Chen

Microplastic pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental issue of global concern due to its detrimental effects on the environment and ecology. Restricted to their characters of complex composition, it is a great challenge to propose a more cost-effective approach to achieve highly selective conversion of microplastic into add-value products. Here we demonstrate an upcycling strategy for converting PET microplastics into added-value chemicals (formate, terephthalic acid and K 2 SO 4 ). PET is initially hydrolyzed in KOH solution to produce terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol , which is subsequently used as an electrolyte to produce formate at the anode. Meanwhile, the cathode undergoes hydrogen evolution reaction to produce H 2 . Preliminary techno-economic analysis suggests that this strategy has certain economic feasibility and a novel Mn 0.1 Ni 0.9 Co 2 O 4-δ rod-shaped fiber (RSFs) catalyst we synthesized can achieve high Faradaic efficiency (> 95%) at 1.42 V vs. RHE with optimistic formate productivity. The high catalytic performance can be attributed to the doping of Mn changing the electronic structure and reducing the metal-oxygen covalency of NiCo 2 O 4 , reducing the lattice oxygen oxidation in spinel oxide OER electrocatalysts . This work not only put forward an electrocatalytic strategy for PET microplastic upcycling but also guides the design of electrocatalysts with excellent performance.

Polydopamine-assisted in situ growth of three-dimensional ZnO/Ag nanocomposites on PET films for SERS and catalytic properties

Deshan Cheng,Yali Zhang,Changwang Yan,Zhongming Deng,Xiaoning Tang,Guangming Cai,Xin Wang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy as an effective method in sensitive detection applications has attracted more and more attentions recently. In this work, polydopamine was taken to achieve the modification of PET film surface for in-situ growth of three-dimensional (3D) ZnO/Ag nanocomposites. Ag nanoparticles on cluster-like ZnO nanorods surface were applied as Raman hot spots for target molecules detection. SEM, XPS, and XRD were used to characterize the microstructures and morphologies of 3D SERS substrates. pATP molecules were selected to measure the sensitivity, uniformity, and durability, the surface-enhanced enhancement mechanism of Raman scattering was analyzed by finite difference time domain (FDDT) simulation method. Malachite green (MG) was further used as the demonstrative pesticide residue, and the catalytic activity was studied by the deoxidization of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). This work has indicated that SERS substrates exhibited the advantages of facile fabrication process, low cost, high sensitivity, good stability and excellent uniformity, which can be used for the rapid Raman enhanced spectroscopy analysis of environmental pollutants.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties of PET Filaments Coated with Ag-N Co-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles Sensitized with Disperse Blue Dyes

Hui Zhang,Qi Tang,Qingshan Li,Qingwen Song,Hailiang Wu,Ningtao Mao

In this study, the effects of disperse blue dye-sensitization on the photocatalytic properties of the Ag-N co-doped TiO2nanoparticles loaded on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) filaments are investigated under visible light irradiation. The microstructure and photocatalytic properties of the as-synthesized TiO2nanocomposites, as well as the as-prepared PET filaments, are systematically characterized. The photocatalytic performance of the PET filaments coated with the Ag-N co-doped TiO2nanoparticles sensitized with disperse blue dyes is evaluated via its capacity of photo-degrading methyl orange (MO) dyes under visible light irradiation. It is found that the holes are the predominant reactive radical species and the hydroxyl and superoxide radicals play a subordinate role in the photocatalytic reaction process. The reaction rate constant of the photocatalytic composite filaments is nearly 4.0 times higher than that of the PET filaments loaded solely with TiO2nanoparticles. The resultant photocatalytic composite filaments are evident to be capable of repeatedly photo-degrading MO dyes without losing its photocatalytic activity significantly.Keywords:Ag-N co-doped;TiO2nanoparticles;sensitization;water-insoluble disperse blue dye;photocatalytic activity

A photostable fluorescent probe based on PET off for the detection of hydrogen sulfide and its application in bioimaging

Jialu Yang,Caixia Yin,Ying Wen,Yongbin Zhang,Fangjun Huo

As an important small gas signal molecule, H2S has become an important research hotspot for both chemists and biologists. Therefore, we designed and synthesized a benzene-conjugated coumarin connected to 2,4-dinitrobenzene via an oxygen atom (P1) to detect H2S and explored its applications in biological imaging. After 40 minutes of long-time irradiation and different pH tests, we found that P1 has good photostability and chemical stability, indicating that P1 had the ability to detect H2S accurately. In addition, P1 has a fast response speed, low detection limit and low toxicity. Based on these characteristics, P1 was used to detect H2S in live cell imaging.

Promising potential of a 18F-labelled small-molecular radiotracer to evaluate PD-L1 expression in tumors by PET imaging

Gaochao Lv,Yinxing Miao,Yinfei Chen,Chunmei Lu,Xiuting Wang,Minhao Xie,Ling Qiu,Jianguo Lin

Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression level is a reproducible biomarker for guiding stratification of patients to immunotherapy. However, the most widely used immunohistochemistry method is incompetent to fully understand the PD-L1 expression level in the whole body because of the highly complex PD-L1 expression in the tumor microenvironment. In this work, a novel small-molecular radiotracer [ 18 F]LG-1 based on the biphenyl active structure was developed to evaluate PD-L1 expression in tumors. [ 18 F]LG-1 was obtained by conjugating and radiolabeling with [ 18 F]FDG with high radiochemical purity (>98.0%) and high molar activity (37.2 ± 2.9 MBq/nmol). In vitro experimental results showed that [ 18 F]LG-1 could target PD-L1 in tumor cells and the cellular uptake in A375-hPD-L1 cells (PD-L1 + ) was clearly higher than that in A375 cells (PD-L1-). In vivo dynamic PET images of [ 18 F]LG-1 provided clear visualization of A375-hPD-L1 tumor with high tumor-to-background contrast, and the tumor uptake was determined to be 3.98 ± 0.21 %ID/g at 60 min, which was 2.6-fold higher than that of A375 tumor. These results suggested that [ 18 F]LG-1 had great potential as a promising PD-L1 radiotracer.

Post-polymerization functionalization to a novel phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing polyether coating for flame retardant treatment of PET fabric

Jianrong Xia,Yumiao Su,Wenmu Li

Concerns about the rising trend of stringent fire safety regulations and demands for reduction in the fire hazard call for a careful evaluation of the environmental impact of flame retardant materials choices. With the worldwide bans and restrictions in the use of traditional halogen-based fire retardant systems, phosphorus/nitrogen synergistic flame retardants became evident. We report here a novel phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing polyether (PN-PEO) prepared by post-polymerization functionalization. The resultant polyethers (PN-PEO) were subsequently coated onto the surface of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics by a simple solution-dipping method to exploit a highly efficient fire retardant. It was found that the loadings of 17.8% PN-PEO had a strong barrier effect in the char layer of the PN-POE-coated PET fabrics after exposed to the torch flame, and resulted in complete suppression of PET fabrics ignition on radiant heat exposure. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mussel-Inspired Surface Functionalization of PET with Zwitterions and Silver Nanoparticles for the Dual-Enhanced Antifouling and Antibacterial Properties

Xuanxuan Xin,Pengfei Li,Yinyan Zhu,Leigang Shi,Jiang Yuan,Jian Shen

Herein, we designed and constructed a dual functional surface with antimicrobial and antifouling abilities to prevent protein and bacterial attachment that are significant challenges in biomedical devices. Primary amino-group-capped sulfobetaine of DMMSA was synthesized and then grafted onto polydopamine pretreated PET sheets via click chemistry. The sheets were subsequently immersed into silver ion solution, in which the absorbed silver ions were reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ by a polydopamine layer. The antifouling assays demonstrated that the resultant PET/DMMSA/AgNPs sheets exhibited great antifouling performances against bovine serum albumin (BSA), bovine fibrinogen (BFG), platelets, and bacteria, the critical proteins/microorganisms leading to implant failure. The antibacterial data suggested that the sheets had dual functions as inhibitors of bacterial growth and bactericide and could efficiently delay the biofilm formation. This repelling and killing approach is green and simple, with potential biomedical applications.

Intumescent flame retardant and anti-dripping of PET fabrics through layer-by-layer assembly of chitosan and ammonium polyphosphate

Yinchun Fang,Xinhua Liu,Xuchen Tao

High flammability and dripping restrict the widely applications of PET fiber, a lot of efforts have been made to overcome these problems. In this paper, chitosan (CH) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were used as the intumescent flame retardant system which was constructed on PET fabrics surface via the Layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique. The flame retardancy and anti-dripping performance of the coated PET fabrics were determined by LOI values and vertical burning test. The results revealed that both the flame retardancy and anti-dripping performance of the LBL assembly coated PET fabrics were improved, particularly when the CH/APP bilayer was over 10 BL, the dripping phenomenon was eliminated. Alkali treatment of PET fabrics before LBL assembly effect on the flame retardancy and anti-dripping performance was investigated. The results indicated that alkali treatment of the PET fabrics would promote the combination of PET fabrics and the charged flame retardants. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to investigate the thermal stability of uncoated and LBL assembly coated PET fabrics. The results of TGA revealed that LBL assembly coated PET fabrics would promote the char formation indicating the obviously condensed phase flame retardant action. The SEM images of the char residues revealed that LBL assembly coated PET fabrics would promote the formation of intumescent char residues with lots of microporous indicating the better anti-dripping performance.
