High efficient all-day nitrogen fixation from air promoted by natural light and sea urchin-like Cobalt oxide photocatalyst under room temperature and atmosphere pressure

Yuanfang Shen,Liangchen Chen,Luping Zhang,Weihang Han,Yurong Chang,Hui Zheng

Photocatalytic conversion of nitrogen to ammonium is a carbon neutralization reaction. Synthesizing suitably modified semiconductor substrate photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation is a challenge and hot topics in recent decades. This research aims to synthesize a photocatalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies and explore its nitrogen fixation performance. Herein, Cobalt oxide@Schiff was synthesized through organic synthesis and hydrothermal method. Its structure and nitrogen fixation properties were explored. It was found that Cobalt oxide@Schiff has an all-day nitrogen fixation performance from air directly, and the rate could reach 2880 μg/(L•h) under sunlight or day and night at normal temperature and pressure. The advantage of this photocatalyst is that the large π bond of the Schiff base ligand could significantly improve the light-trapping ability and the synergistic effect of nitrogen fixation, which provides a new pathway for nitrogen fixation day and night under room temperature and atmosphere pressure.

Structural characterization of a distinct neutral polysaccharide fraction (SP0–1) from sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) and its antioxidant-related intestinal protection in Drosophila melanogaster

Su Jinle,Ge Lingrui,Niu Chunyu,Chen Yan,Zhang Leifang,Chen Yin

SP0–1, a neutral polysaccharide fraction isolated from sea buckthorn berries ( Hippophae rhamnoides L.), was purified and structurally characterized, and its antioxidant-related intestinal protective effects were evaluated in Drosophila melanogaster . HPGPC analysis showed a single symmetrical peak and indicated a relatively homogeneous fraction with a moderate molecular weight (Mw, 5.59 × 10 4  Da; ≈55.9 kDa). PMP-HPLC analysis revealed that SP0–1 was mainly composed of galactose, xylose, and arabinose (Gal/Xyl/Ara-rich; Gal:Xyl:Ara = 1:0.38:0.93). Methylation analysis combined with 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy supported the presence of major →4)- and →4,6)-linked Galp motifs, →5)- and →3,5)-linked Araf motifs, and terminal Xylp residues. The consecutive Gal–Gal arrangement, the residue adjacent to Gal O-6, the overall connection of the Ara/Xyl-containing region to the Gal-containing region, and the O-3 substituent of residue D remain unresolved. Functionally, SP0–1 exhibited concentration-dependent radical-scavenging activities against DPPH, ABTS• + , and hydroxyl radicals in vitro. In a Drosophila oxidative-stress model, dietary SP0–1 supplementation significantly improved survival and climbing performance, enhanced endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities, and reduced malondialdehyde levels. Moreover, SP0–1 markedly alleviated H 2 O 2 -induced intestinal oxidative injury, as evidenced by decreased reactive oxygen species accumulation and reduced intestinal epithelial cell death. These findings suggest that the structural characteristics of SP0–1, including its proposed Gal-rich linkage features and Ara/Xyl-containing residue motifs, may be associated with the observed antioxidant-related intestinal protection. Collectively, this study provides a structural and functional basis for further investigation of SP0–1 as a potential bioactive polysaccharide fraction.

Characterization of active films based on chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol integrated with ginger essential oil-loaded bacterial cellulose and application in sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicas) packaging

Xuening Chen,Weiqing Lan,Jing Xie

The poor mechanical properties, low water-resistance, and limited antimicrobial activity of chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based film limited its application in aquatic product preservation. Herein, bacterial cellulose (BC) was used to load ginger essential oil (GEO). The effects of the addition of BC and different concentrations of GEO on the physicochemical and antimicrobial activities of films were systematically evaluated. Finally, the application of sea bass fillets was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) analysis indicated dense networks were formed, which was verified by enhanced physical properties. The mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antimicrobial activities enhanced as GEO concentration increased. CPB 0.8 (0.8 % GEO) film had better tensile strength (TS) and barrier performance, improved the quality, and extended the shelf-life of sea bass for another 6 days at least. Overall, active films are potential packaging materials for aquatic products.

Co-coating ZnCo2O4 and carbon on a biomimetic sea anemone-shaped SnO2 mesostructure for high-performance lithium-ion batteries and semi-solid lithium slurry batteries

Jiawei Long,Tianli Han,Yingyi Ding,Chaoquan Hu,Jinyun Liu

Biomimetic materials are receiving increasing attention as potential candidates for secondary battery systems owing to unique structures and properties. Here, we develop a biomimetic composite composing of sea anemone-shaped hollow SnO 2 in-situ co-coating with ZnCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles encapsulated by a carbon shell. The biomimetic SnO 2 @ZnCo 2 O 4 @C-based Li-ion battery anode shows a stable capacity of 700 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles, a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99% and a repeatable rate-performance. Low reaction barriers and rapid diffusion kinetics of Li ions are verified by using galvanostatic intermittent titration technique analysis. Moreover, a full cell composing of a SnO 2 @ZnCo 2 O 4 @C anode and a LiCoO 2 cathode exhibits 520 mAh g −1 ; while working as a slurry battery anode, the sea anemone-shaped SnO 2 @ZnCo 2 O 4 @C also displays high capacity and Coulombic efficiency after 100 cycles. The high performances of the biomimetic composite when working at different battery systems enable it to be applicable broadly.

Enhancement in the metabolic profile of sea buckthorn juice via fermentation for its better efficacy on attenuating diet-induced metabolic syndrome by targeting gut microbiota

Fei Shen,Jiachen Zhuang,Qianqian Wang,Junhui Zhang,Ying Huang,Qiufen Mo,Mingjie Zhao,Jing Wang,Hao Zhong,Fengqin Feng

To enhance physiological activity and probiotic availability of sea buckthorn juice, sea buckthorn juice pulp (BHJ) went through fermentation to the fermented (FHJ). In vitro , FHJ displayed better antioxidant and antidiabetic capacities. To further study effects of FHJ on diet-induced metabolic syndrome (MS) and possible mechanisms in vivo , C57BL/6 mice were fed on BHJ and FHJ under high fat diet (HFD). FHJ, rather BHJ, displayed better performance on ameliorating hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress in MS. Mechanistically, FHJ intervention significantly reversed the microorganism dysbiosis by restoring the microbial diversity, and modulating obesogenic bacteria abundance, like Oscillospira . Furthermore, fermentation altered FHJ’s metabolomics, especially flavonoids, contributing to interactions between FHJ and probiotics, like Akkermansia and Lachnospiraceae . Furthermore, short-chain fatty acids, related to ameliorations of MS, were increased by FHJ. This study demonstrated that interactions between metabolomic alterations in FHJ and microorganisms were vital to attenuate MS.

Fabrication of an All-Solid-State Carbonate Ion-Selective Electrode with Carbon Film as Transducer and Its Preliminary Application in Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Field Exploration

Chuqing Zhang,Yang He,Jianbo Wu,Manqing Ai,Wei Cai,Ying Ye,Chunhui Tao,Pingping Zhang,Quan Jin

Real-time measurements of carbonate ion concentrations in the ocean are critical to advancing marine environmental monitoring and research into deep-sea hydrothermal activity. Herein, we report the first example of deep-sea hydrothermal field exploration using a carbonate ion-selective electrode (ISE). The novel carbonate ISE was composed of a Ni wire as substrate, carbon film as transducers and carbonate-selective membrane layers. This paper describes the preparation process of the electrode and characterises its performance via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical analysis. The detection limit of the electrode for CO32−is 2.821 × 10−6mol/L, the linear response range is 1.0 × 10−5–1.0 × 10−1mol/L and the Nernst slope was −30.4 mV/decade. In April 2021, the carbonate ISE was mounted on multi-parameter sensors with pH and Eh (redox) electrodes for the search of hydrothermal activity at the Southwest Indian Ridge. The simultaneous potential anomalies appeared at this carbonate electrode with the pH and Eh electrodes when passing through the hydrothermal field. The study of the hydrothermal field was supported by the in situ camera video and the sulphide samples. Additionally, the carbonate electrode provides enhanced information of water chemistry for the study of the hydrothermal field.Keywords:ion-selective electrode;carbonate determination;carbon film;hydrothermal field

Evaluation of regulatory capacity of three lactic acid bacteria on the growth performance, non-specific immunity, and intestinal microbiota of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus

Longzhen Liu,Yang Liu,Guangcai Qin,Cong Wei,Yongmei Li,Liang Cui,Xiangli Tian

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been extensively used as probiotics in aquaculture. However, probiotic effects of different inter-generic strains of LAB on sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus are still poorly understood. Here, sea cucumber were fed with five diets for 63 days, including a basal diet (the control, C group), a florfenicol diet (15 mg/kg; the positive control, FL group) and three LAB diets, i.e., the basal diets supplemented with Lactobacillus plantarum W2 (LP group), Enterococcus faecium LYB (EF group) and Pediococcus acidilactici Nj (PA group) at the dose of 1 × 10 10  CFU/kg diet, respectively. A stimulation test with inactivated Vibrio splendidus was then performed and characterized immune responses of sea cucumber over 168 h. The results showed that all three LAB significantly enhanced the growth performance of sea cucumber, with the LP diet showed the best growth-promoting effect. The LP and PA diets significantly increased coelomocyte phagocytic, respiratory burst, superoxide dismutase , alkaline phosphatase , acid phosphatase , catalase , and lysozyme activities. The LP and EF diets significantly up-regulated the intestinal immune genes ( Aj -p105, Aj -p50, Aj -rel, and Aj -lys) expression levels, while PA diet did not significantly up-regulate the Aj -p50 gene expression level. Meanwhile, all three LAB significantly enhanced intestinal immune response. Florfenicol diet significantly decreased phagocytic and alkaline phosphatase activities, down-regulated the Aj -lys gene expression, and suppressed intestinal immune response. L. plantarum W2 significantly increased the diversity of the intestinal microbiota in sea cucumber, and the P. acidilactici Nj significantly improved both the diversity and richness. A higher relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, norank_f_ Rhodobacteraceae , and Sedimentitalea was observed in the LP, EF, and PA groups, respectively, while a lower relative abundance of Firmicutes was showed in the FL group. All three LAB improved the stability of the intestinal microbial networks and up-regulated the functional pathways of intestinal microbiota associated with amino acid metabolism . However, florfenicol reduced microbial network stability and significantly inhibited the intestinal microbiota functions. In conclusion, L. plantarum W2, E. faecium LYB, and P. acidilactici Nj can be effectively used as probiotics in sea cucumber aquaculture. Among them, L. plantarum W2 exhibited the best effect on sea cucumber when the growth performance, non-specific immunity, and intestinal microbial structure and functions were considered collectively.

Emulsification properties and oil-water interface properties of l-lysine-assisted ultrasonic treatment in sea bass myofibrillar proteins: Influenced by the conformation of interfacial proteins

Yamei Wu,Yanyan Wu,Huan Xiang,Shengjun Chen,Yongqiang Zhao,Qiuxing Cai,Yueqi Wang

In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of lysine-assisted ultrasonic treatment on the conformation, and interfacial and emulsification properties of sea bass myofibrillar proteins at the oil–water interface. It was observed that the modification treatment with lysine (1 g/L) combined with low-intensity ultrasound (200 W) enhanced the interfacial pressure and penetration rate. This enhancement could be attributed to the significant structural unfolding of myofibrillar proteins located at the oil–water interface (increase in β-sheets and reduction in α-helices), which exposed the hydrophobic groups. The rate of interfacial protein adsorption subsequently increased, owing to the strengthening of protein–protein and protein–oil phase interactions. Additionally, the interfacial swelling rheology experiment showed an enhancement in the ordered structure of interfacial proteins, aiding in the development of a protein gel network structure. Consequently, the elastic modulus of the oil–water interface was larger, and the droplet interfacial structure was tight, which facilitated uniform distribution and improved the emulsification properties of the droplets, ultimately enhancing the ability of the emulsions to be stored at room temperature.

Determining the influence of LC2 and FA on the iodide diffusion coefficient of in seawater and sea sand concrete: A novel modified RIM test method

Jun Liu,Jiaying Liu,Lei Cheng,Jihua Zhu,Feng Xing,Xu Fan,Luping Tang

A novel modified Rapid Iodide Migration (RIM) test method was used to determine the influence of LC2 and FA on iodide ion diffusion coefficient of seawater and sea sand concrete (SSC). A 0.1 mol/L AgNO 3 solution was selected as the indicator to develop the colour of iodide in SSC, and a lowered mass fraction of NaI solution was selected to improve the RIM test. An X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) test was employed to detect the feasibility of the modified RIM test. Additionally, the effects of the w/c ratio, the type and substitution rate of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and the compressive strength on the iodide ion diffusion coefficient of SSC were studied using the modified RIM test. The results show that it is completely feasible to use AgNO 3 solution as an indicator. A lower mass fraction of NaI solution not only does not change the iodide ion diffusion coefficient of concrete but also reduces the test cost by 77.46% when using a 5 wt% NaI solution. Moreover, using SCMs to replace cement, liking fly ash (FA) and calcined clay and limestone (LC2), significantly reduces the iodide ion permeability of SSC, especially the use of LC2. Furthermore, there is a nonlinear relationship between the compressive strength and the iodide ion diffusion coefficient of SSC. This work is beneficial for the promotion of the application of modified RIM tests in studies of concrete contaminated with chloride and can provide a theoretical basis for the application of seawater and sea sand in engineering practices.

Fabrication of sea urchin shaped polyaniline-modified magnetic microporous organic network for efficient extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from animal-derived food samples

Yan-Hong Li,Xu-Hui Li,Yuan-Yuan Cui,Abdukader Abdukayum,Cheng-Xiong Yang

In this work, a novel polyaniline-modified magnetic microporous organic network (MMON-PANI) composite was fabricated for effective magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of five typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from animal-derived food samples before high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) detection. The core-shell sea urchin shaped MMON-PANI integrates the merits of Fe 3 O 4 , MON, and PANI, exhibiting large specific surface area, rapid magnetic responsiveness, good stability, and multiple binding sites to NSAIDs. Convenient and effective extraction of trace NSAIDs from chicken, beef and pork samples is realized on MMON-PANI via the synergetic π-π, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions. Under optimal conditions, the MMON-PANI-MSPE-HPLC-UV method exhibits wide linear ranges (0.2–1000 μg L −1 ), low limits of detection (0.07–1.7 μg L −1 ), good precisions (intraday and inter-day RSDs < 5.4 %, n = 3), large enrichment factors (98.6–99.9), and less adsorbent consumption (3 mg). The extraction mechanism and selectivity of MMON-PANI are also evaluated in detail. This work proves the incorporation of PANI onto MMON is an efficient way to promote NSAIDs enrichment and provides a new strategy to synthesize multifunctional MON-based composites in sample pretreatment.

Fast and complete recovery of magnesium from sea bittern to synthesize magnesium hydroxide hexagonal nanosheet for enhanced flame retardancy and mechanical properties of epoxy resin

Baishuo Sun,Yun Li,Hongfei Guo,Xueqing Chen,Jilin Cao

Magnesium is the most abundant element in sea bittern, of which preferential and high-efficient recovery is significant for extraction of other valuable elements, such as lithium etc. In this work, a two-step method was proposed to rapidly and completely extract magnesium from sea bittern. Firstly, solid sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was directly added to sea bittern to convert magnesium to mesh-structure magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH) 2 ) intermediate, where Mg(OH) 2 seeds were pre-added to accelerate the filtration process . Subsequently, mesh-structure Mg(OH) 2 intermediate was hydrothermally transformed to Mg(OH) 2 hexagonal nanosheet with size of 40–60 nm. The synthesized Mg(OH) 2 hexagonal nanosheets after modification by sodium stearate were applied to enhancement in flame retardancy and mechanical properties of epoxy resin (EP). When the addition amount of Mg(OH) 2 hexagonal nanosheets is 9 wt%, in contrast to pure EP, the formed composite showed decreased heat release rate , smoke production rate, total heat release and total smoke production by 63.5 %, 66.3 %, 39.2 % and 46.2 %, respectively. Simultaneously, tensile and bending strength of this composite were increased by 104.0 % and 61.9 %. This work gives a high-value route for magnesium in sea bittern without diluting sea bittern concentration, which would contribute to the high-value utilization of sea bittern in a cost-effective way.

Sea cucumber (Acaudina leucoprocta) peptides extended the lifespan and enhanced antioxidant capacity via DAF-16/DAF-2/SOD-3/OLD-1/PEPT-1 in Caenorhabditis elegans

Wu Yue,Yang Jingjuan,Xu Chengmei,Li Qiuqi,Ma Yage,Zhao Shenglan,Zhuang Jiachen,Shen Fei,Wang Qianqian,Feng Fengqin,Zhang Xi

The sea cucumber peptides (SCPs) from Acaudina leucoprocta were derived from the patented bio-enzyme digestion technology and the molecular weight of obtained SCPs was <10 kDa. In this study, we investigated the possible anti-aging effects of SCPs on the model of Caenorhabditis elegans and the underlying mechanisms. SCPs extend the average lifespan of nematodes by 31.46%. SCPs enhance the anti-stress capacity of C. elegans by improving heat resistance and mobility, Also, the accumulated potential oxidative stress inducers like lipofuscin and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were reduced to 40.84 and 71.43%. In addition, SCPs can increase the antioxidant capacity in nematodes by enhancing the activity of SOD and CAT and reducing MDA accumulation in nematodes to 32.44%. Mechanistically, SCPs could mediate DAF-16/DAF-2/SOD-3/OLD-1/PEPT-1 axis to improve antioxidant capacity and extend lifespan in nematodes. Taken together, these findings provide a direction for the anti-aging effects of sea cucumber peptides and new insights into the further purifications of SCPs and future research on aging.
