Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene has been proven to be a material of high application potential in the field of electromagnetic (EM) protection. Considering the density, MXene/polymer films (MPFs) are fabricated by employing the simple tape casting process and exhibit excellent electromagnetic shielding performance with respect to the MXene content. However, the absorption properties of as-fabricated MPFs are not satisfactory due to the impedance mismatch. Herein, a multilayer impedance gradient absorber with MPFs arranged in order has been successfully designed and prepared. The developed absorber possesses excellent EM wave absorption properties owing to the well-matched impedance and adjustment of permittivity. Moreover, the effect of the thickness of MPFs on the EM wave absorbing properties has been investigated by theoretical calculations and experimental measurements. The HFSS calculation reveals that the effective absorption bandwidth is capable to cover the whole X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) with only a micro-adjustment of the thickness, with the minimum reflection coefficient (RC min) reaching up to −26.10 dB. In addition, the synergistic effect of the multiple loss mechanisms has been discussed in detail. This study not only proposes the effective design of a novel multilayer impedance gradient absorber, but also provides new fundamental basis for combining the simulation technology and material design.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI)-shielding materials with remarkable shielding effectiveness (SE) based on dominant absorption are highly desirable, especially if they are also flexible and lightweight. Herein, we prepared MXene (Ti3C2TX, TX-=O,-OH,-F)-based lightweight and absorption-dominant EMI-shielding non-woven fabrics. In view of the porosity and soft properties of textiles, as well as the unique high conductivity and hydrophilicity of Ti3C2TX MXene, Ti3C2TX MXene was coated on the fiber skeleton of three different non-woven fabrics made from polyester, cotton, and calcium alginate. The conductive layer formed by Ti3C2TX MXene on the fiber led to heterogeneous interfaces. They improved the multiple reflection of electromagnetic waves among Ti3C2TX MXene sheets and then contributed to the attenuation of the electromagnetic waves. Among all the samples, calcium alginate/Ti3C2TX MXene reached a maximum SE of 25.26 dB at 12.4 GHz with the fabric thickness of 3.17 mm. Cotton/Ti3C2TX MXene achieved maximum SSEt (ratio of specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) to thickness) of 2301.95 dB cm2g−1 at 1.36 mm with a loading of Ti3C2TX MXene of only 5.77mg/cm3. Further, fabric thickness, layer number, conductivity, and substrate type were selected to analyze the EMI-shielding mechanism.

Two-dimensional (2D) membranes exhibit exceptional properties in molecular separation and transport, which reveals their potential use in various applications. However, ion sieving with 2D membranes is severely restrained due to intercalation-induced swelling. Here, we describe how to efficiently stabilize the lamellar architecture using Keggin Al13 polycations as pillars in a Ti3C2Tx membrane. More importantly, interlayer spacing can be easily adjusted with angstrom precision over a wide range (2.7–11.2 Å) to achieve selective and tunable ion sieving. A membrane with narrow d-spacing demonstrated enhanced selectivity for monovalent ions. When applied in a forward osmosis desalination process, this membrane exhibited high NaCl exclusion (99%) with a fast water flux (0.30 L m–2 h–1 bar–1). A membrane with wide d-spacing showed notable selectivity, which was dependent on the cation valence. When it was applied to acid recovery from iron-based industrial wastewater, the membrane showed good H+/Fe2+ selectivity, which makes it a promising substitute for traditional polymeric membranes. Thus, we introduce a possible route to construct 2D membranes with appropriate structures to satisfy different ion-sieving requirements in diverse environment-, resource-, and energy-related applications.

In this work, biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanocomposites were prepared through melt compounding. The roles of MXene in nonisothermal melt and cold crystallization of PLA were explored. The morphology, structure and crystallization behavior were studied using polarized optical microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. For nonisothermal melt crystallization, the presence of MXene increases the crystallinity and shortens the half-crystallization time but does not change the crystallization peak temperature of PLA. For nonisothermal crystallization from the glassy state, the incorporation of MXene decreases the cold crystallization peak temperature and reduces the crystallinity marginally but does not affect the half-crystallization time of PLA. The crystallization kinetics analysis based on the Avrami equation shows that, for both the melt and cold crystallization, the crystallization mechanism is unchanged irrespective of the addition of MXene. The investigation would be useful for understanding the correlation between processing and properties of PLA/MXene nanocomposites.

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with excellent metallic conductivity have proved promising in its application of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. A hierarchical hybrid film with ultrathin thickness composed of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers embedded with yarn-ball-shaped microspheres of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was designed to improve the absorption of electromagnetic waves (EMWs). The addition of yarn-ball-shaped microspheres is to shield more EMWs via multiple reflections in the inner space and reduce the undesirable emissions into the air. After thermal annealing treatment, the ultrathin film with intercalation of the carbonized yarn-ball-shaped CNF/MWCNT microspheres exhibited enhanced EMWs absorption as an important part of shielding effectiveness (45.1±0.9 dB) as well as excellent mechanical stability (≈0.9 million bending times). Thus, the well-designed structure of multilayered hybrid films with intercalated conductive microspheres can be a good candidate for higher absorption in EMI shielding effectiveness and outstanding mechanical properties.

Ultrathin, lightweight and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding films are urgently desired for the next generation electronic devices with complex-shaped surfaces. In this study, flexible EMI shielding composite films were fabricated by intercalating sliver nanowires (AgNWs) into Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets followed by a pressured-extrusion film-forming process. The resultant MXene/AgNW composite films with a low loading of nanocellulose (0.167 wt%) as a green binder exhibited remarkable conductivity (∼30 000 S m−1) and outstanding specific EMI shielding effectiveness (SSE/t, 16 724 dB). Thanks to the strengthening mechanism of the “brick-and-mortar” layered structure, the tensile stress of the MXene/AgNW composite film dramatically improved from 1.29 MPa (pure Ti3C2Tx film) to 63.80 MPa, and the electric conductivity and EMI SE can be maintained even after bending at 135° 10 000 times. The MXene/AgNW hybrid films with excellent EMI SE and mechanical robustness offered promising applications in the fields of aerospace, defense, smart electronics and flexible/wearable devices.

Soft actuation materials are highly desirable in flexible electronics, soft robotics, etc. However, traditional bilayered actuators usually suffer from poor mechanical properties as well as deteriorated performance reliability. Here, inspired by the delicate architecture of natural bamboo, we present a hierarchical gradient structured soft actuator via mesoscale assembly of micro–nano-scaled two-dimentional MXenes and one-dimentional cellulose nanofibers with molecular-scaled strong hydrogen bonding. The resultant actuator integrates high tensile strength (237.1 MPa), high Young’s modulus (8.5 GPa), superior toughness (10.9 MJ/m3), and direct and fast hygroscopic actuation within a single body, which is difficult to achieve by traditional bilayered actuators. The proof-of-concept prototype robot is demonstrated to emphasize its high mechanical robustness even after bending 100 000 times, kneading, or being trampled by an adult (7 500 000 times heavier than a crawling robot). This bioinspired mesoscale assembly strategy provides an approach for soft materials to the application of next-generation robust robotics.

Although ammonia gas sensor research has been developed for a long time, room temperature flexible ammonia gas sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity are still hot research topics. 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have combined their versatile surface chemistry and high metal conductivity to show their enormous sensing potential. Herein, developing a room temperature nanocomposite based on 2D MXenes materials and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) with high gas response and flexibility targeting the construction of high-performance ammonia sensors is focused on. Thanks to the hydrogen bond composition, ohmic contact with the interdigitated electrodes, and excellent mechanical properties, the CPAM/Ti 3 C 2 T x -based ammonia sensors exhibit high ammonia selectivity, faster response–recovery rate (12.7/14.6 s), excellent flexibility, and long-term mechanical stability at room temperature. The synthesis of the CPAM/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites offers a lasting inspiration for developing high-performance flexible gas sensors.

Incorporation of magnetic loss component is more favorable to high-performance microwave absorbing materials. In this paper, the NiFe 2 O 4 -decorated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composites were synthesized by the in-situ chemical co-precipitation method. The magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were attached on the surfaces or inserted into the interlayers of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Interestingly, we reduced effectively complex permittivity and enhanced magnetic loss by increasing the NiFe 2 O 4 content on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Stronger electromagnetic attenuation ability and preferable impedance matching property were achieved and considered to be responsible mainly for improving absorbing peaks as well as bandwidth of the NiFe 2 O 4 -Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composite. In particular, the NiFe 2 O 4 -Ti 3 C 2 T x -20 sample exhibited an optimal effective absorption bandwidth ( RL < −10 dB) of 7.68 GHz with the material thickness of only 1.5 mm. These findings are believed to pave the way of further promoting microwave absorption performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene from magnetic functionalized decoration of view.

Low interlaminar shear stress, high mechanical strength, and tunable structure make Ti3C2Tx MXene a burgeoning star as solid lubricants and lubricant additives. Although surface modification strategy can improve its compatibility with base oils, it will eventually settle due to gravity. Additionally, base oils are prone to leakage, creep, and volatilization, which limit their application. To address these issues, supramolecular gels with surface-modified Ti3C2Tx were conceived. Apart from the lubrication effect, the high thermal conductivity of Ti3C2Tx MXene accelerated the phase transition rate of supramolecular gels. The thermal-reversible and creep-resistant properties distinguish them from other conventional lubricants. The tribological tests showed that the 500 solvent neutral (SN) supramolecular gel with 0.10 wt % Ti3C2Tx-octadecylphosphonic acid (Ti3C2Tx-ODPA) reduced the coefficient of friction (COF) by 46.32% and wear volume by 81.18% compared with pure 500SN oil. Moreover, they also performed well in load-carrying capacity, temperature tolerance, and speed adaptability. This work puts forward a new approach to prepare MXene-based lubricants tailored for some severe lubrication conditions. These exceptional features enable their application in rolling bearings, some gears, and other low maintenance mechanisms.

The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is a new class of two-dimensional inorganic material, which can be used as anticorrosive filler for epoxy coating . In this work, the BTA molecules are intercalated into Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene through hydrogen bonding to obtain a high-performance active-passive dual protective function Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@BTA composite corrosion inhibitor . The morphology, structure and composition of prepared Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@BTA nanocomposite were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). Moreover, the release behavior and inhibition behavior were investigated by UV–vis spectrophotometer and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. The results show that the continuously released of BTA can be achieved by introducing BTA into Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene interlayer , and the complete release time can reach 1000 min. In addition, EIS results show that the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@BTA composite coating exhibited the excellent anti-corrosion properties, and the impedance value remains above 10 10 Ω·cm 2 for 50 days in 3.5 NaCl solution, which is 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure epoxy coating.

Establishing stable and efficient Pt-free counter electrodes (CEs) is an important challenge for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Ti3C2Tx MXene, with its high catalytic activity and conductivity, has gained attention as a CE in DSSCs. The focus of this paper is on the preparation of Ti3C2Tx decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite electrode materials (CNTs/Ti3C2Tx), and testing their performance as CEs in DSSCs. Through a series of electrochemical tests, a CNTs/Ti3C2Tx CE exhibits good electrocatalytic activity toward iodine-based electrolytes with low charge transfer resistance, which is close to the performance of a Pt CE. The photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of the CNTs/Ti3C2Tx (1.0 wt%) CE-based DSSCs reaches 5.83%, which is much higher than that of the CNTs CE (3.70%), and approximates that of the Pt CE (6.61%). We attribute the improved performance to the synergistic effect of the excellent conductivity and unique two-dimensional chemical structure of Ti3C2Tx MXene. Moreover, the photostability test of continuous light exposure shows that the CNTs/Ti3C2Tx-1.0 wt% (C/T-1.0 wt%) CE exhibits good stability to the electrolyte. Therefore, CNTs/Ti3C2Tx composites can be used as an efficient Pt-free CE for DSSCs in the future.
