ZnO-Doped Metal-Organic Frameworks Nanoparticles: Antibacterial Activity and Mechanisms

Huiying Zheng,Biying Zhong,Qiaowen Wang,Xi Li,Jiehan Chen,Li Liu,Tiantian Liu

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) offer new ideas for the design of antibacterial materials because of their antibacterial properties, high porosity and specific surface area, low toxicity and good biocompatibility compared with other nanomaterials. Herein, a novel antimicrobial nanomaterial, MIL-101(Fe)@ZnO, has been synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by FTIR, UV-vis, ICP-OES, XRD, SEM, EDS and BET to show that the zinc ions are doped into the crystal lattice of MIL-101(Fe) to form a Fe-Zn bimetallic structure. MIL-101(Fe)@ZnO was found to be effective against a wide range of antibacterial materials includingStaphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Acinetobacter baumannii,Acinetobacter juniiandStaphylococcus epidermidis. It has a significant antibacterial effect, weak cytotoxicity, high safety performance and good biocompatibility. Meanwhile, MIL-101(Fe)@ZnO was able to achieve antibacterial effects by causing cells to produce ROS, disrupting the cell membrane structure, and causing protein leakage and lipid preoxidation mechanisms. In conclusion, MIL-101(Fe)@ZnO is an easy-to-prepare antimicrobial nanomaterial with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity and low toxicity.Keywords:metal-organic frameworks;MIL-101(Fe);ZnO;antibacterial activity;antibacterial mechanism

Highly efficient and robust multi-color afterglow of ZnO nanoparticles

Chun Sun,Jiachen Han,Yiwei Zhao,Xiaohui Liu,Chao Fan,Kai Lian

Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials are widely used in various fields. However, the realization of multicolor RTP via facile approaches still remains a great challenge. In this study, we propose an in situ hydrolysis method using different solvents to synthesize blue, green, and yellow phosphorescence ZnO/SiO2 composites. By investigating the photoluminescence (PL) and phosphorescence mechanisms of ZnO/SiO2 composites, it is discovered that the solvents not only introduce impurities to ZnO but also affect the position of defect energy levels, leading to the variation in luminescent performance. Meanwhile, the as-synthesized ZnO/SiO2 composites exhibit stable PL and phosphorescence under extreme conditions. Specifically, the PL and phosphorescence properties of the composites are well maintained at high temperature (523 K) or underwater. Owing to the multicolor phosphorescence properties of these ZnO/SiO2 products, herein, we demonstrate that ZnO/SiO2 composites can act as new smart materials for information encryption, fingerprint identification, and white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs).

Fabrication of ZnO/CuInS2 heterojunction for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen production

Fen Qiao,Wenjie Liu,Jing Yang,Yanzhen Liu,Jiaren Yuan

ZnO/CuInS 2 composites were synthesized by using electrospun ZnO chain structures as a template, along with InCl 3 , CuCl 2 , and thiourea as sources of indium , copper, and sulphur, respectively. The ZnO/CuInS 2 core-shell structure enhances light absorption and carrier transport efficiency. Moreover, ZnO/CuInS 2 exhibits superior light absorption and photocatalytic hydrogen production performance compared to ZnO, with a peak hydrogen production of 4188.24 μmol g −1 . The arrangement of energy levels within the ZnO/CuInS 2 heterojunction is the crucial factor in enhancing photocatalytic properties. Increased electrons distribution near the interface facilitates the transport performance of charge carriers, which accelerates hydrogen production kinetics at the interface, and promotes greater participation of photogenerated electrons and holes in catalytic reactions . Combined with the application of density functional theory, the computational analyses of work function and differential charge support this assertion. This paper introduces a fresh method for creating innovative photocatalysts and grasping the reaction mechanism involved in photocatalytic hydrogen generation .

In-Situ Growth of ZnO Whiskers on Ti2ZnC MAX Phases

Yinan Ren,Zhihua Tian,Yan Zhang,Fushuo Wu,Hao Xie,Qianqian Zhang,Peigen Zhang,Zhengming Sun

ZnO whiskers have many applications, such as in medical and photocatalysis fields. In this study, an unconventional preparation approach is reported, realizing the in-situ growth of ZnO whiskers on Ti2ZnC. The weak bonding between the layer of Ti6C-octahedron and the Zn-atom layers leads to the easy extraction of Zn atoms from Ti2ZnC lattice points, resulting in the formation of ZnO whiskers on the Ti2ZnC surface. This is the first time that ZnO whiskers have been found to grow in-situ on Ti2ZnC substrate. Further, this phenomenon is amplified when the size of the Ti2ZnC grains is mechanically reduced by ball-milling, which bodes a promising route to prepare ZnO in-situ on a large scale. Additionally, this finding can also help us better understand the stability of Ti2ZnC and the whiskering mechanism of MAX phases.Keywords:Ti2ZnC MAX phase;crystal growth;in-situ growth;ZnO whiskers

Fabrication of ZnO@Fe2O3 superhydrophobic coatings with high thermal conductivity

Xiaoxiang Chen,Zuozhu Yin,Jiale Yan,Mingshan Xue,Yuhua Chen,Chenggang Yang,Yidan Luo

Efficient thermal management materials are an integral part of electronic devices and can quickly contribute to their heat dissipation, thereby greatly improving their reliability, stability and service life . However, the inherent hygroscopicity of the film surface sets obstacles to the reliability and structural stability of electronic devices. To address these issues, a bionic structural design was obtained by spraying a polyurethane/stearic acid/zinc oxide‑iron oxide composite powder (TPU/STA/ZnO@Fe 2 O 3 ) on the surface of graphene composite films . At the same time, the graphene composite film has a high in-plane thermal conductivity (up to 533 W −1 ·m −1 ·K −1 ) and is able to reduce the film surface temperature to room temperature within 5 s due to its highly ordered layered design and strong hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition, the composite film offers a range of advantages such as good hydrophobicity and electrical conductivity . With a water contact angle of up to 159.5 ± 2° and an electrical conductivity of up to 3 × 10 3  S/m in steady state , the results show that the superhydrophobic graphene composite film has good physical, chemical and mechanical stability, as well as self-cleaning capabilities. It also retains good flexibility and reliability under 350 bending cycles. In this regard, the development of graphene composite films with high thermal conductivity , high superhydrophobicity, good electrical conductivity and flexibility is expected to be used as thermally conductive materials , opening up a new path in the field of thermally conductive heat dissipation materials for electronic components.

Chen Jing,Shan Mengde,Zhu Haojia,Zhang Shichuan,Li Jingmei,Li Leijiao

BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composite photocatalytic material with type II heterojunction structure was synthesized by a simple solid-phase sintering method, it was characterized by XRD, UV–vis, and PT methods. The photocatalytic antibacterial experiments were carried out under LED light irradiation. The experimental results showed that the photocatalytic antibacterial properties of BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composites against bacteria and fungi were significantly stronger than those of single BiSnSbO 6 and ZnO. Under light conditions, the antibacterial efficiencies of 500 mg/L BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composites against E. coli , S. aureus , and P. aeruginosa reached 99.63%, 100%, and 100% for 6 h, 4 h, and 4 h, respectively. The best antibacterial concentration of BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composite against the eukaryotic microorganism Candida albicans was 250 mg/L, and the antibacterial efficiency reached the highest 63.8% at 6 h. Antibacterial experiments were carried out on domestic livestock and poultry wastewater, which showed that the BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composite photocatalytic material has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against bacteria, and the antibacterial effect has species differences. Through the MTT experiment, it is proved that the prepared BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composite photocatalytic material has no toxicity at the experimental concentration. According to the free radical scavenging experiment and SEM observation of the morphological changes of the bacteria after light treatment, the prepared BiSnSbO6-ZnO composite photocatalytic material can generate active species OH, h + , and e − through light irradiation to achieve the purpose of sterilization, where e − play a major role, indicating that the BiSnSbO 6 -ZnO composite photocatalytic material has broad application prospects in the actual antibacterial field.

Controllable synthesis of ZnO nanoflowers with structure-dependent photocatalytic activity

Yanning Qu,Renliang Huang,Wei Qi,Mingbo Shi,Rongxin Su,Zhimin He

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials are functional photocatalysts that show excellent photocatalytic activity, among which diverse morphologies, such as nanospheres, nanorods, nanoleaves, nanodisks, or nanoflowers, often possess different photocatalytic activities. In this study, we employed a simple ultrasonic treatment to controllably synthesize three types of three-dimensional (3D) fluffy ZnO nanoflowers with different nanostructures. Specifically, one nanoflower with smooth edges was formed via direct hydrothermal reaction without ultrasonic treatment (denoted as ZnO-0), and the other two with different jagged margins were obtained by ultrasonic treatment at 250 W and 950 W, respectively, before the hydrothermal procedure (denoted as ZnO-250 and ZnO-950). The results showed that the size, specific surface area, crystallite dimension, intrinsic donor defects and the signals of reactive radicals of ZnO nanoflowers all decreased with increasing ultrasonic intensity. Furthermore, the photocatalytic performance of such ZnO nanoflowers with similar morphologies but different nanostructures was investigated using methyl orange (MO) as a model pollutant. As expected, ZnO-0 possessed the highest photocatalytic activity with a kinetic constant of 0.0478 min −1 , while the value decreased to 0.0251 min −1 and 0.013 min −1 for ZnO-250 and ZnO-950 under simulated sunlight irradiation, respectively, suggesting that the photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO nanoflowers decreased due to the ultrasonic treatment. These findings provide structural insight into the photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoflowers.

Influence of defects in porous ZnO nanoplates on CO2 photoreduction

Pan Li,Shuang Zhu,Haifeng Hu,Lingju Guo,Tao He

Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into hydrocarbons by utilization of the solar energy is considered a promising approach to mitigate energy crisis and the environmental issues. Since the defects in a catalyst play an important role in CO 2 reduction, herein, the porous ZnO nanoplates with vacancy defects are synthesized by annealing ZnS(en) 0.5 precursor in air at different temperature. The defect amount in ZnO changes with the annealing temperature, resulting in different photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction. The related mechanism has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Raman spectra and chemical composition of the obtained catalysts are used to determine the defects. Transient techniques are used to investigate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. CO 2 adsorption capacity for different catalysts is also measured. First-principles calculation is used to study the adsorption and activation of CO 2 on the ZnO surface. We envision that this work may afford an efficient approach to develop the semiconductor photocatalysts with superior activity via defects engineering.

ZnO-Controlled Growth of Monolayer WS2 through Chemical Vapor Deposition

Zhuhua Xu,Yanfei Lv,Feng Huang,Cong Zhao,Shichao Zhao,Guodan Wei

Monolayer tungsten disulfide (2D WS2) films have attracted tremendous interest due to their unique electronic and optoelectronic properties. However, the controlled growth of monolayer WS2is still challenging. In this paper, we report a novel method to grow WS2through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with ZnO crystalline whisker as a growth promoter, where partially evaporated WS2reacts with ZnO to form ZnWO4by-product. As a result, a depletion region of W atoms and S-rich region is formed which is favorable for subsequent monolayer growth of WS2, selectively positioned on the silicon oxide substrate after the CVD growth. Keywords:monolayer WS2;ZnO;CVD;controlled growth

Zn–ZnO@TiO2 nanocomposite: a direct electrode for nonenzymatic biosensors

Liang Zhen,Zhang Xiaojun

In this article, TiO 2 -modified ZnO nanotube arrays (NTAs) are successfully synthesized and used to prepare a nonenzymatic biosensor for the detection of glucose and hydrazine hydrate. In brief, the ZnO@TiO 2 NTAs are synthesized on zinc foil by two steps of simple hydrothermal method. Therefore, it can be directly used as a working electrode and is not needed to be modified to other electrode surface by any means to form a sensor. In the oxidation of glucose and reduction reaction of hydrazine hydrate, it exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, it has high sensitivity, a fast response time (less than 3 s), and a detection limit as low as 0.5 μM (S/N = 3) toward glucose and hydrazine hydrate respectively. In the selectivity of the target analyte, the Zn–ZnO@TiO 2 nanocomposite electrode can effectively resist the influence of different interferent, including uric acid, dopamine, and l -cysteine.

Improved stability and dispersity of ZnO@PANI nanocomposites aqueous suspension

Xin Jin,Guangrong Liu,Chongzhuo Bao,Mingxin Chen,Qiang Huang

The high dispersion and stability of a nanocomposites suspension are required as a crucial factor in many of their applications. In this study, ZnO nanosheets covered with polyaniline (PANI) thin layer (ZnO@PANI) were synthesized by a simple in-situ polymerization. The as-prepared ZnO@PANI powders were well characterized by XRD, Raman, FTIR, XPS and photoluminescence spectra, as well as SEM and TEM techniques. The effect of PANI incorporation on the chemical dissolution and dispersing stability of ZnO aqueous suspension was investigated. Dissolution experiments showed that the dissolution of ZnO was effectively restrained by the surface-hybridized PANI layer. ZnO@PANI suspension can be more stable in a wider pH range. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) analysis indicated that ZnO@PANI particles were thoroughly dispersed in the neutral and alkaline solution as proven by the emergence of a single distribution with a high diffused intensity. Sedimentation experiments suggested that ZnO@PANI suspension was a more stable dispersion taking into account the effect of pH and ionic strength.

ZnO superhydrophobic coating via convenient spraying and its biofouling resistance

Changquan Li,Chan Xie,Junfei Ou,Mingshan Xue,Fajun Wang,Sheng Lei,Xinzuo Fang,Haoyu Zhou,Wen Li

The attachment of microbial biomass on solid surfaces, also referred to as biofouling, is a universal phenomenon that occurs in natural and engineering systems. However, traditional antibiofouling surfaces based on either the release of biocidal compounds or surface chemical/physical design have some drawbacks, such as the high cost, the complicated process, the low accuracy, and the limitation to achieve coatings over large area. Herein, to overcome these problems, a superhydrophobic coating is fabricated via spraying the mixture of hydrophobized zinc oxide nanoparticles and epoxy resin. The zinc oxide nanoparticles form a multiscale roughness, and the epoxy resin promotes the robustness of the coating. The so-formed superhydrophobic coating resists the attachment of protein, bacteria, and marine algae. It is expected that the so-developed superhydrophobic coating can be applied in the fields of biomedical instruments, antimicrobial material, marine platform, and ships.
