The design of universal nanocarriers with broad-spectrum drug compatibility, high loading efficiency, and controlled release remains a significant challenge in drug delivery. Herein, a versatile platform based on black phosphorus nanosheets modified with a metal–polyphenol network (BP@MPN) is presented. The MPN coating significantly enhances the structural stability of BP and introduces a multifunctional interface capable of diverse non-covalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, hydrophobic, and π interactions, to support the efficient loading of a wide range of therapeutic agents. A multidimensional evaluation demonstrates that BP@MPN exhibits superior loading performance across small molecules, proteins, inorganic nanostructures, and metal ions. Quartz crystal microbalance analysis reveals that strong drug–carrier interactions contribute to the enhanced loading efficiency. In vitro and in vivo studies confirm the excellent biocompatibility and hemocompatibility of BP@MPN. Moreover, in a B16F10 tumor model, DOX-loaded BP@MPN combined with near-infrared (NIR) irradiation achieves potent chemo–photothermal synergistic therapy (TGI = 88.5%) with minimal systemic toxicity. These findings establish BP@MPN as a promising, broadly applicable nanocarrier platform for controlled drug delivery and advanced nanomedicine.

Growing attention focuses on the glycemic index (GI) of staple foods, driven by the critical importance of blood glucose management for diabetic patients. This study investigated the influence of Flos Trollii polyphenol (FTP) on wheat noodle quality and starch digestion kinetics, focusing on its potential as a natural additive for improving nutritional value and reducing glycemic response. The incorporation of 0%–2% FTP enhanced noodle texture, reducing cooking loss by 33.5% and improving sensory attributes at concentrations ≤ 1.5%. Structural analyses (SEM, XRD, FTIR) revealed formation of V-type crystalline complexes between FTP and starch alongside gluten network reinforcement, thereby restricting digestive enzyme accessibility. DSC confirmed elevated thermal stability with gelatinization enthalpy increasing from 3.01 to 5.00 J/g, supporting starch-polyphenol interactions. In vitro digestion demonstrated that 1.5% FTP significantly decreased digestible starch content by 57% and predicted glycemic index (pGI) by 30.9% (65.18±1.09 compared to 94.40±3.15 in the control), primarily due to enzyme inhibition and complex formation. These findings highlight the dual role of FTP in enhancing noodle quality while reducing starch digestibility, providing a natural strategy for developing diabetes-friendly foods.

Crystalline nephropathy is driven by a self-perpetuating cycle in which crystal-induced tubular injury promotes further nucleation, growth, and aggregation, transforming the kidney into a pathological mineralization niche. Conventional therapies fail to disrupt this vicious loop, while nanomedicines are hindered by the glomerular filtration barrier (<10 nm), and natural antioxidants like protocatechuic acid (PCA) suffer from poor bioavailability. Here, we report a 7.3 nm mitochondria-targeted metal−polyphenol network (Fe-PCA@TPP) that overcomes both delivery and targeting challenges to directly intervene at sites of redox imbalance. Formed via PCA−Fe3+ coordination and functionalized with triphenylphosphonium (TPP), Fe-PCA@TPP efficiently traverses the glomerular barrier, accumulates selectively in mitochondria, scavenges free radicals broadly, restores redox homeostasis, and potently inhibits calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal nucleation, growth, and aggregation. In vitro, Fe-PCA@TPP protects renal tubular epithelial cells from oxalate-induced oxidative stress by preserving mitochondrial bioenergetics and preventing apoptosis. In vivo, it preferentially accumulates in the kidney, reduces CaOx deposition, improves renal function, and downregulates markers of injury and inflammation. Mechanistically, Fe-PCA@TPP targets Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor Type 1 (SerpinE1) to block oxidative stress−apoptosis cascades, thereby remodeling the intrarenal pathological microenvironment. This work presents a size-compatible, mitochondria-targeted, and SerpinE1-specific nanoplatform that integrates crystal inhibition, redox regulation, and efficient renal clearance, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for crystalline nephropathy.

It is urgently necessary to develop more effective anti-influenza agents due to the continuous emergence of drug-resistant strains of influenza virus. Our earlier studies have identified that certain pentacyclic triterpene derivatives are effective inhibitors of influenza virus infection. In the present study, a series of C-28 modified pentacyclic triterpene derivatives via conjugation with a series of polyphenols were synthesized, and their antiviral activities against influenza A/WSN/33 (H1N1) virus in MDCK (Madin-Darby canine kidney) cells were evaluated. Four compounds 23m , 23o , 23q and 23s displayed robust anti-influenza potency with averaged IC 50 values at the low-micromole level, surpassing the potency of oseltamivir . In addition, the in vitro cytotoxic activity of the four conjugates against MDCK cells showed no toxicity at 100 μ M. Further mechanism studies of compound 23s , one of the best representative conjugates with IC 50 value of 5.80 μ M and a selective index (SI) value of over 17.2, by hemagglutination inhibition (HI), surface plasmon resonance and molecular modeling indicated that this conjugate bound tightly to the viral envelope hemagglutinin ( K D = 15.6 μ M), thus blocking the invasion of influenza viruses into host cells.

Efficient separation materials with multifunctional and switchable properties are urgently needed to treat submicron-scale oily droplets. Herein, tannic acid (TA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) were blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and used to coat a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-modified non-woven fabric immersed in a CuSO 4 /H 2 O 2 coagulation bath. TA and PEI form a phenolamine hydrophilic network that migrates to the surface and firmly binds to the PVDF substrate. CuSO 4 catalyses the H 2 O 2 oxidation, promoting the self-polymerisation of phenol hydroxyl group for forming a carboxyl group. Furthermore, the remaining Cu 2+ ions complex with TA to form a metal–phenol cross-linked network. A double-cross-linked hydrophilic layer with polyphenols as connection points was formed on the PVDF surface. The hydrophilic contact angle of the membrane reached 0°. A rough structure with PDMS micro-/nanoparticles was constructed on the PVDF underside via surface nanocasting and the hydrophobic contact angle of the membranes reached 165°. In experiments, each side of the obtained Janus membranes demonstrated surface superhydrophilic and superlipophilic properties and a high flux and excellent separation efficiency for various oil–water emulsions. The integrated Janus membranes are suitable for unidirectional liquid collection, oil–water emulsion separation, cationic pigment adsorption and dealing with complex dye–emulsion pollutants. The integrated structure formed by the hydrophilic layer and the membrane enhances the fouling resistance of the membrane and the removal rate of pollutants reached >99 %. This research presents a simple approach to prepare Janus membranes with asymmetric wettability.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant tea polyphenol, possesses excellent anti-inflammation properties. Emerging studies proved its potent potential as an immune checkpoint (ICP) inhibitor for anticancer therapy. However, the low bioavailability of EGCG reduces its treatment efficiency. In this work EGCG-based nanomedicine EGCG–ZIF-8@PDA–PEG (EZP) was developed via the coordination between ZIF-8 MOF and EGCG, followed by polydopamine and PEG functionalization for efficient tumor-targeting EGCG delivery. Results demonstrated that the EGCG loading rate in EZP reached up to 85%. Both in vitro and in vivo studies proved that the EZP nanoparticles were capable of inhibiting the expression of ICP molecules and modulating the inflammatory tumor microenvironment, evidenced by the suppression of PD-L1 expression, the reduction of inflammatory cytokines, and the resultant decline in the number of immunosuppressive cells, for instance, myeloid-derived suppressor cells, tumor-associated macrophages, and regulatory T cells. These synergistic effects significantly improved the infiltration of dendritic cells and T cells in tumors, realizing an inspiring antitumor effect.

Theabrownins (TBs) are the characteristic functional and quality components of dark teas such as Pu-erh tea and Chin-brick tea. TBs are a class of water-soluble brown polymers with multi-molecular weight distribution produced by the oxidative polymerisation of tea polyphenols during the fermentation process of dark tea, both enzymatically and non-enzymatically. TBs have been extracted and purified from dark tea all the time, but the obtained TBs contain heterogeneous components such as polysaccharides and caffeine in the bound state, which are difficult to remove. The isolation and purification process was tedious and uses a lot of harmful organic solvents. This has made it difficult to industrialise TBs. In this study, epigallocatechin (EGC), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin gallate (ECG), EGC/EGCG (mass ratio 1:1), EGCG/ECG (mass ratio 1:1), EGC/ECG (mass ratio 1:1), EGC/ECG (mass ratio 1:1), EGC/ECG (mass ratio 1:1) and EGC/EGCG/ ECG (mass ratio 1:1:1) as substrates and catalyzed by polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) in turn to produce TBs, named TBs-dE-1, TBs-dE-2, TBs-dE-3, TBs-dE-4, TBs-dE-5, TBs-dE-6 and TBs-dE-7. The physicochemical properties and the antibacterial activity and mechanism of TBs-dE (1-7) were investigated. Sensory and colour difference measurements showed that all seven tea browning samples showed varying degrees of brownish hue. Zeta potential in aqueous solutions at pH 3.0-9.0 indicated that TBs-dE (1-7) was negatively charged and the potential increased with increasing pH. The characteristic absorption peaks of TBs-dE (1-7) were observed at 208 nm and 274 nm by UV-visible(UV-vis) scanning spectroscopy. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicated that they were phenolic compounds. TBs-dE (1-7) showed significant inhibition of Escherichia coli DH5α ( E. coli DH5α). TBs-dE-3 showed the strongest inhibitory effect with MIC of 1.25 mg/mL and MBC of 10 mg/mL, followed by TBs-dE-5 and TBs-dE-6. These three TBs-dEs were selected to further investigate their inhibition mechanism. The results showed that TBs-dE inhibited bacteria by disrupting the extracellular membrane of E. coli DH5α, causing the leakage of contents and increasing the intracellular reactive oxygen content, resulting in abnormal cell metabolism due to oxidative stress. The TBs-dE was found to damage the extracellular membrane of E. coli DH5α, causing leakage of contents, and increase intracellular reactive oxygen content, resulting in abnormal cell metabolism due to oxidative stress. The results of the study provide a theoretical basis for the industrial preparation and product development of TBs.

Tea polyphenols were used as substrates and oxidized successively by polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase to prepare theabrownins (TBs-dE). The conversion rate of catechins to TBs-dE was 90.91%. The ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopic properties and zeta potential of TBs-dE were characterized. TBs-dE is more stable at pH 5.0–7.0, about 25 °C or in dark environment. Ultraviolet light and sunlight can deepen its color due to the further oxidative polymerization. Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Al 3+ had a significant effect on the stability of TBs-dE. The inhibitory rates of TBs-dE (1 mg/mL) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli DH5α were 51.45% and 45.05%, respectively. After TBs-dE treatment, the cell morphology of both bacteria changed, some cell walls were blurred, and the cytoplasmic content leaked. The research results can provide theoretical support for the industrialization of theabrownins.

Global warming has increased the frequency of Microcystis aeruginosa blooms, leading to the deterioration of water quality and loss of biodiversity. Therefore, developing effective strategies for controlling M. aeruginosa blooms has become an important research topic. Plant extracts, 4‑tert-butylpyrocatechol (TBC) and tea polyphenol (TP) are commonly used for water purification and to increase fish immunity, which have great potential to inhibit cyanobacterial blooms. The inhibitory effects of TBC and TP on M. aeruginosa were investigated in terms of growth characteristics, cell membrane morphology, physiological, photosynthetic activities, and antioxidant enzymes activities . The results showed that TBC and TP inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa by decreasing the chlorophyll fluorescence transients or increasing the antioxidant enzymes activities of M. aeruginosa . TBC damaged the cell morphology of M. aeruginosa , reduced extracellular polysaccharides and protein contents, and up-regulated the antioxidant activity-related gene ( sod and gsh ) expressions of M. aeruginosa . TP significantly decreased the photosynthetic pigment content, influenced the phycobiliprotein content, and strongly down-regulated the photosynthesis-related gene ( psbA, psaB, and rbcL ) relative expressions of M. aeruginosa . TBC caused significant oxidative stress , dysfunction of physiological metabolic processes, and damaged crucial biomacromolecules (e.g., lipids, proteins and polysaccharides), prompted the loss of cell integrity, ultimately leading to the death of M. aeruginosa . However, TP depressed photosynthetic activities and consequently inhibited the transfer of electrons, affected the electron transfer chain , decreased the photosynthetic efficiency , and eventually caused the death of M. aeruginosa cells. Our study showed the inhibitory effects and algicidal mechanisms of TBC and TP on M. aeruginosa , and provide a theoretical basis for restrain the overgrowth of M. aeruginosa .

To overcome the limitations of doxorubicin (DOX) chemotherapy, nanomedicines that integrate additional photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) strategies are highlighted as promising alternatives for the treatment of malignant tumors. However, time-consuming preparation processes, biosafety concerns, and the bottlenecks of individual therapeutic modalities often limit the practical applications of this strategy. To address these issues, this work designs an oxygen economizer that additionally serves as a Fenton reaction amplifier through the simple assembly of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), pluronic F-127 (PF127), iron (III) ions, and doxorubicin (DOX) for the enhancement of synergistic PTT/CDT/chemotherapy. The resulting nanoformulation, EFPD, can target mitochondria and inhibit cell respiration to reduce O 2 consumption, thus boosting DOX-mediated H 2 O 2 generation for enhanced CDT and simultaneously improving hypoxia-limited DOX chemotherapy efficacy. Moreover, the coordination between EGCG and Fe 3+ provides EFPD with excellent photothermal conversion efficiencies ( η = 34.7%) for PTT and photothermal-accelerated drug release. Experimental results indicate that EFPD-mediated synergistic enhancement of PTT/CDT/chemotherapy can achieve excellent therapeutic outcomes, including enhanced ablation of solid tumors, reduced metastasis and cardiotoxicity, and extended life spans.

In this study, novel thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membrane with nanocluster structure was successfully synthesized by confining interfacial polymerization (IP) on graphene oxide/metal-polyphenol (GO/TA-M n+ ) nanonetwork scaffold interlayer for the first time. By metal-polyphenol network coordination cross-linking, very stable GO/TA-M n + nanonetwork scaffold was constructed via brush coating, which well-regulated the pore structure and distribution of the substrate, greatly restricting the invasion of polyamide (PA) matrix to the pore of substrate. Moreover, the GO/TA-M n + modified substrate effectively mediated the amine monomers diffusion during interfacial polymerization, contributing to form an ultrathin PA layer (∼19.2 nm) with nanocluster structure. The separation performance therefore can feasibly be tuned by the metal ions of different valence states. The strategy also gives appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile defect-free TFC membranes on various substrates. The prepared TFC-GO/TA-Al 3+ membrane held outstanding separation performance with water permeability of 16.87 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and competitive rejection of 97.2% for Na 2 SO 4 , displaying the permeability increment of about 4.5 times without sacrificing salt rejection.

Background Synovial fluid components, especially lipids, can trigger oxidation of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) artificial joint components in vivo. The use of antioxidants such as vitamin E effectively diminishes the oxidative cascade by capturing free radicals and reducing the oxidation potential of UHMWPE implants. Using a thermo-oxidative aging method, we recently found that tea polyphenols can enhance the oxidation resistance of irradiated UHMWPE in comparison with commercial vitamin E. However, it is yet unknown whether tea polyphenols can reduce lipid-induced oxidation. Questions/purposes We explored whether tea polyphenol-stabilized UHMWPE would exhibit (1) lower squalene absorption; (2) stronger oxidation resistance; and (3) lower content of free radicals than vitamin E-stabilized UHMWPE under a physiologically-motivated in vitro accelerated-aging model. Methods Tea polyphenol (lipid-soluble epigallocatechin gallate [ ls EGCG]) and vitamin E were blended with UHMWPE powders followed by compression molding and electron beam irradiation at 100 and 150 kGy. Small cubes (n = 3, 60 mg, 4 × 4 × 4 mm 3 ) cut from the blocks were doped in squalene at 60°, 80°, 100°, and 120° C for 2 hours. Gravimetric change of the cubes after squalene immersion was measured to assess absorption. Thin films (n = 3, ∼60 μm) were also microtomed from the blocks and were doped at 120° C for 24 hours. Oxidation induction time (n = 3, 5 mg of material from the cubes) and incipient oxidation temperature (n = 3, thin films) were obtained to determine the oxidation stability. Signal intensity of the free radicals, obtained by electron spin resonance spectroscopy, was used to qualitatively rank the antioxidant ability of vitamin E and ls EGCG. Results Squalene absorption was comparable between ls EGCG/UHMWPE and vitamin E/UHMWPE at a given temperature and radiation dose. The oxidation induction time of 100 kGy-irradiated UHMWPE was increased with ls EGCG compared with vitamin E except at 120° C. For example, the oxidation induction time value of 100 kGy-irradiated ls EGCG/UHMWPE immersed at 60 o C was 25.3 minutes (24.2–27.8 minutes), which was 8.3 minutes longer than that of 100 kGy-irradiated vitamin E/UHMWPE which was 17.0 minutes (15.0–17.1 minutes) (p = 0.040). After squalene immersion at 120° C, the incipient oxidation temperature of 100 and 150 kGy irradiated ls EGCG/UHMWPE was 234° C (227–240° C) and 227° C (225–229° C), which was higher than vitamin E-stabilized counterparts with value of 217° C (214–229° C; p = 0.095) and 216° C (207–218° C; p = 0.040), respectively. The electron spin resonance signal of 150 kGy irradiated ls EGCG/UHMWPE was qualitatively weaker than that of 150 kGy irradiated vitamin E/UHMWPE. Conclusions ls EGCG-stabilized UHMWPE demonstrated higher oxidation resistance than vitamin E-stabilized UHMWPE after squalene immersion, likely because ls EGCG donates more protons to eliminate macroradicals than vitamin E. Clinical Relevance Our in vitro findings provide support that ls EGCG may be effective in protecting against oxidation that may be associated with synovial fluid-associated oxidation of highly crosslinked UHMWPE joint replacement components.
