Ag-Activated Metal−Organic Framework with Peroxidase-like Activity Synergistic Ag+ Release for Safe Bacterial Eradication and Wound Healing

Jie Zhou,Ning Chen,Jing Liao,Gan Tian,Linqiang Mei,Guoping Yang,Qiang Wang,Wenyan Yin

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), a commonly used antibacterial nanomaterial, exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activity to combat drug-resistant bacteria. However, the Ag NPs often causes a low availability and high toxicity to living bodies due to their easy aggregation and uncontrolled release of Ag+in the bacterial microenvironment. Here, we report a porous metal−organic framework (MOF)-based Zr-2-amin-1,4-NH2[email protected](denoted as UiO-66-NH2-Ag) nanocomposite using an in-situ immobilization strategy where Ag NPs were fixed on the UiO-66-NH2for improving the dispersion and utilization of Ag NPs. As a result, the reduced use dose of Ag NPs largely improves the biosafety of the UiO-66-NH2-Ag. Meanwhile, after activation by the Ag NPs, the UiO-66-NH2-Ag can act as nanozyme with high peroxidase (POD)-like activity to efficiently catalyze the decomposition of H2O2to extremely toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the bacterial microenvironment. Simultaneously, the high POD-like activity synergies with the controllable Ag+release leads to enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, facilitating the death of resistant bacteria. This synergistic antibacterial strategy enables the low concentration (12 μg/mL) of UiO-66-NH2-Ag to achieve highly efficient inactivation of ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli (AmprE. coli) and endospore-forming Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis). In vivo results illustrate that the UiO-66-NH2-Ag nanozyme has a safe and accelerated bacteria-infected wound healing. Keywords:antibacterial;silver ions release;nanozyme;metal−organic framework;wound healing

Prussian Blue Nanocubes Decorated with Ag Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared Triggered Release of Bactericidal Ag+, Fe2+, and Fe3+ Ions

Ze-Wei Ma,Wen-Rong Li,Jing-Yue Zhang,Wen-Xin Yang,Shaozao Tan,Ji-Ye Cai,Sui-Ping Deng

Effective photosensitizers (PSs) are at the heart of the key role of photo-driven antibacterial therapy. However, relative high temperature required for bactericidal activity, stimulating at multiple wavelengths, and multi-step synthesis of the photothermal and photodynamic agents challenge their applications in antibacterial treatment. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) functionalized by kaempferol (Kae) are implanted into Prussian blue (PB) to construct photo-responsive nanocubes (AgPB) by a simple synthetic process. The as-synthesized AgPB nanocomposites were found to have an average size of ∼140 nm, and the particle size range of the loaded-AgNPs was 5–15 nm. The structure of AgPB was characterized, and the photothermal and photodynamic evaluation of antibacterial activity of AgPB was investigated under single 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light. By adjusting the doping ratio of AgNPs, the band gap can be tuned from 2.78 to 2.56 eV to further enhance the photothermal conversion of AgPB and its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). When compared with AgPB without NIR illumination, in vitro antibacterial studies by usingEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureusshowed that AgPB under 808 nm NIR light could rapidly heat up to 50 °C, enhance the formation of ROS, and promote the ion release amount of Fe2+, Fe3+, and Ag+ to increase oxidative stress, leading to inhibition of bacterial proliferation significantly. BothE. coliandS. aureuswere completely killed within 10 min. Moreover, the biofilm formation was remarkably inhibited, and the eradication ratio againstE. coliandS. aureusbiofilms was 69.73 and 60.01%, respectively. In addition, the hemolytic activity test proved that AgPB had good biocompatibility. The results showed that AgPB with triple bactericidal modalities could expand the application of PSs and serve as a promising nanocomposite for antibacterial therapy.

A novel Ag nanoparticles purification method and the conductive ink based on the purified Ag nanoparticles for printed electronics

Ning Tianxiang,Luo Yinyi,Liu Piao,Lu Anxian

In this study, a novel method called membrane separation–centrifugation technology is used to purify the AgNPs. The TGA results showed that the AgNPs washed in this method only contained a minimal amount of organic residues (< 5 wt.%). Moreover, the XRD results indicate that the cleaned AgNPs are pure single-crystal cubic phase Ag without other impurities. Furthermore, according to the results of SEM and TEM, the AgNPs cleaned by this technology are nanoscale with an average particle size of only 50 nm and dispersed evenly without agglomeration. The colloid made from AgNPs purified by this method reveals a good Zeta potential of about -34.7 mV, which indicates the excellent stability of AgNPs. After the ink made by these AgNPs is dried at 150℃ for 10 min, a really low electrical resistivity only about 10.7 × 10 –6 Ω·cm is obtained. These results confirm that the membrane separation–centrifugation technology can significantly improve the performances of the AgNPs ink, which can be used in printed electronics.

Ultrasensitive detection of thiram based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering via Au@Ag@Ag core/shell/shell bimetallic nanorods

Yuqiu Wang,Shuchang Liu,Yongjun Hu,Cuicui Fu,Weiqiang Chen

We developed a highly sensitive and stable SERS-active substrate of Au@Ag@Ag core/shell/shell nanorods, formed by encapsulating Au nanorods (Au NRs) into a bilayer silver shell with Raman reporter molecules (4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and thiram) in the shell–shell gap. The core/shell/shell nanostructures demonstrated a high SERS enhancement and easy assembly. The important role of the bilayer silver shell in boosting the SERS intensity and detection sensitivity was revealed by comparing the performances of the Au@Ag@4-MBA@Ag NRs, Au@Ag@4-MBA NRs, and Au@4-MBA NRs. The obtained Au@Ag@4-MBA@Ag NRs exhibited a significantly promoted SERS intensity, which could reach around 2.6 times and 240 times that of the Au@Ag@4-MBA NRs and Au@4-MBA NRs, where the enhancement factor was found to be strongly correlated with the shell thickness. The controllable plasma properties and SERS effect of the Au@Ag@4-MBA@Ag NRs could be optimized by adjusting the dose of silver nitrate. The SERS substrate comprising core/shell/shell nanorods was highly reproducible and stable (retaining 83% SERS intensity after one month). Moreover, the highly sensitive detection of the pesticide thiram with a detection limit as low as 1.74 × 10−9 M was achieved by taking advantage of the great SERS response of the core/shell/shell nanostructures, which was 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than for other SERS substrates. The developed SERS substrate could be readily extended to embed other target analytes into the core/shell/shell nanostructure for novel and sensitive detection. This study could enable fresh approaches toward next-generation ultrasensitive analyte detection.

Broad photoluminescence in ternary Ag-In-S and quaternary Ag-In-Zn-S nanoparticles: the role of Zn incorporation

Xiangming Liu,Xiaoshi Peng,Tao Xu,Yulong Li,Huiyue Wei,Zanyang Guan,Feng Wang

Ternary Ag-In-S and quaternary Ag-In-Zn-S nanoparticles with different ratio of Ag/In/Zn/S are synthesized. The incorporation of Zn into Ag-In-S nanoparticles leads to the increase in the optical bandgap and the blue shift of photoluminescence (PL). The optical properties of these nanoparticles are significantly dependent on the chemical composition of nanoparticles. Time-resolved PL spectroscopy in nanosecond time regime is used to study the recombination processes of carriers, which involve the surface states and intrinsic crystallographic defects. These measurements support the donor-acceptor model, in which the PL is achieved by radiative recombination of the localized electron and hole.

In-situ implantation of plasmonic Ag into metal-organic frameworks for constructing efficient Ag/NH2-MIL-125/TiO2 photoanode

Weicheng Cui,Jianpeng Shang,Hongye Bai,Jian Hu,Dongbo Xu,Jinrui Ding,Weiqiang Fan,Weidong Shi

Realizing a highly efficient catalytic activity for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has been becoming a key challenge for fabricating TiO 2 photoanode, due to its weak light-response ability and poor electrical conductivity. For the first time, we prepared the TiO 2 nanorods decorated with NH 2 -MIL-125 film, and subsequently in-situ implanted Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into NH 2 -MIL-125 film by mild reduction process with the help of amine group. The synergistic effect between NH 2 -MIL-125 and Ag NPs is aimed at efficiently improving light-response and the overall conductivity of photoanode. The PEC performance of as-prepared Ag/NH 2 -MIL-125/TiO 2 hybrid-photoanode has been systemically investigated. The photocurrent density of optimal Ag/NH 2 -MIL-125/TiO 2 has reached 1.06 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE) under illumination (100 mW/cm 2 ), which is almost 4.42 times higher than that of pristine TiO 2 . The incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) value of Ag/NH 2 -MIL-125/TiO 2 has been increased to 51.0% at 390 nm. Furthermore, the desirable charge injection ( η i n j e c t i o n ) of 96.4% and charge separation ( η s e p a r a t i o n ) efficiency of 33.1% have been achieved. The in-situ introduction of Ag NPs into NH 2 -MIL-125/TiO 2 heterostructure provides a novel model for understanding the synergistic effect between metal and MOF over PEC water splitting.

Promoted chemoselective crotonaldehyde hydrogenation on zirconia-doped SiO2 supported Ag catalysts: Interfacial catalysis over ternary Ag–ZrO2–SiO2 interfaces

Haiqiang Lin,Hongyan Qu,Weikun Chen,Kang Xu,Jianwei Zheng,Xinping Duan,Hesheng Zhai,Youzhu Yuan

In gas-phase chemoselective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde on Ag-based catalysts, zirconia doping on silica supports was found to improve catalytic performance in terms of unsaturated alcohol selectivity, hydrogenation activity, and stability. The surface modification of silica by zirconia doping favors the fine dispersion of Ag species due to the enhanced quantity and strength of surface acid sites, which enable construction of abundant catalytic sites effective for C O bond hydrogenation. High crotyl alcohol selectivity, exceeding 80%, and significant inhibition of monohydrogenation on the C C bond were observed on the optimal Ag/Zr–SiO 2 catalyst. Dynamic O 2 chemisorption measurement revealed that the pure Ag powders did not chemisorb O 2 irreversibly under 323 K, but SiO 2 or Zr–SiO 2 supported Ag catalysts did. The amounts of Ag active for O 2 chemisorption, which are at least one order of magnitude lower than that of surface Ag derived from TEM and XRD characterizations, match well with the perimeter interface Ag of hemispherical particles. A strong correlation between hydrogenation activity and O 2 uptake on those Ag/SiO 2 and Ag/Zr–SiO 2 catalysts with different Ag dispersions and deactivation degrees was observed, implying that the effective catalytic sites for crotonaldehyde chemoselective hydrogenation may originate from accessible interface sites with unique redox properties. Catalyst induction and deactivation were observed on both Ag/SiO 2 and Ag/Zr–SiO 2 catalysts in real catalytic operation. Changes in metal stable interface structure, rather than metal aggregation and coagulation, are assumed to be the main cause of irreversible catalyst deactivation, because the apparent Ag particle sizes changed slightly, but the oxygen chemisorption ability deteriorated considerably. Electropositive Ag sites interacting with neighboring oxygen from oxide supports at the ternary Ag–ZrO 2 –SiO 2 interface are proposed to account for highly selective C O bond hydrogenation to produce the desired unsaturated alcohol.

Preparation of Ag NWs and Ag NWs@PDMS stretchable sensors based on rapid polyol method and semi-dry process

Wei Li,Yin He,Jie Xu,Wen-yu Wang,Zheng-tao Zhu,Hao Liu

The silver nanowires (Ag NWs) prepared by improved polyol method in 30min were applied to the stretchable strain sensors. Three factors affecting the morphology of Ag NWs were discussed, including reaction temperature, molecular weight of PVP, ratio of silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Experimental results showed that Ag NWs with diameter of 53 ± 9 nm, length of 31 ± 7 μm and the aspect ratio is 584.9 were obtained under the optimum conditions. Thus, a new and convenient method was proposed to fabricate flexible stretchable sensors by embed Ag NWs into Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The stability, hysteresis, and sensitivity of the Ag NWs@PDMS strain sensors were evaluated by cyclic stretch-release test. Our strain sensor with good stability, higher sensitivity (the gauge factor is 4.11) and good repeatability could be stretched 10% continuously for about 200 cycles. Ag NWs@PDMS flexible sensors can be used in wearable devices to monitor human movements.

Mid-infrared tunable absorber based on an Ag/SiO2/VO2/Ag/VO2 multilayer structure and its molecular sensing capability

Jiawei Huang,Rui Li,Hengchang Zhang,Ying Wu,Yunxia Wang,Yunxia Wang,Changchun Yan,Changchun Yan,Caiqin Han,Caiqin Han

We present a design of middle-infrared modulation absorbers based on vanadium dioxide (VO2). By using the electron beam evaporation technique, the Ag/SiO2/VO2/Ag/VO2 multilayer structure can achieve double band strong absorption in the mid-infrared, and dynamically adjust the absorption performance through VO2. The simulation results demonstrate a remarkable absorption rate of 91.8% and 98.9% at 9.09 µm and 10.25 µm, respectively. The high absorption is elucidated by analyzing the field strength distribution in each layer. Meanwhile, based on the phase change characteristics of VO2, the absorber has exceptional thermal regulation, with a remarkable 78% heat regulation range in the mid-infrared band. The size altering of the absorbing layer is effective in enhancing and optimizing the structure's absorption performance. The structure is used to characterize probe molecules of CV and R6 G by mid-infrared spectroscopy, which illustrates an impressive limit of detection (LOD) of 10−7 M for both substances. These results provide valuable insights for designing future high-performance tunable optical devices.

Momentous Roles of Ag nanoparticles in enhancing CO2 photoreduction activity of Z-scheme heterojunction Ag/Bi12SiO20/BiOBr composite film

Jiao Li,Tingting Xue,Jiuyang Li,Jiaqi Wang,Xiaochao Zhang

The immobilization of highly-efficient catalyst has always been one key issue in the research and development of industrial catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction. In this work, a series of novel Ag/Bi 12 SiO 20 /BiOBr composite films with varying levels of Ag deposition have been successfully synthesized using in-situ photodeposition method. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction experiments indicate that 1.5   wt.%-Ag/Bi 12 SiO 20 /BiOBr composite film demonstrates the highest CO generation rate (33.47 μmol∙m −2 ∙h −1 ) and cycle stability, exhibiting the 1.62-fold increase after the incorporation Ag nano-particles (NPs). Characterization tests reveal that the presence of Ag NPs not only brings about the red-shift phenomenon of light absorption to extend and enhance visible-light response, but also acts as photo-generated carrier recombination center between Bi 12 SiO 20 and BiOBr to create unique Z-scheme charge transport pathway. More importantly, the Schottky barrier effect between Ag and semiconductors is conducive to improving the effective separate of photogenerated charges, improving photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Our findings should offer valuable guidance for the research and development of construction heterostructures and noble metal deposition modification strategy for solar-driven CO 2 reduction photocatalyst system.

MOF@Ag/AAB/Au@Ag composite matrix full-dimensional divergence effect-based SERS paper sensor for rapid carbaryl quantification

Yujie Pan,Peini Zhao,Weili Cai,Hehe Fang,Xiaoru Wang,Junyu Zhao,Peihua Zhu,Hongmei Yang,Shenguang Ge,Jinghua Yu

Carbaryl is a broad-spectrum carbamate fungicide that may pose a threat to ecosystems and human health. To prevent and control the harm caused by excessive application of carbaryl, a full-dimensional divergence effect SERS sensor has been constructed. Biodegradable paper chips were used as sensor substrates. ZIF-8 with structural flexibility was grown in situ on carbon paper. A rough silver layer with surface like metal etching was clad outside the ZIF-8. Artificial antibody (AAB) with accurate grasping ability was polymerized on the surface of ZIF-8@Ag paper substrate. Au@Ag CSNPs were decorated on the AAB to provide abundant “hot spots”. Every functional material layer works together to form a gap and tip region with superior plasmon resonance. The proposed SERS sensor realizes the rapid and accurate on-site screening and localization of carbaryl in food with good correlation responded in the range of 0.01–20 μg·mL −1 and a low detection limit of 5.72 × 10 –‍3 ‌ μ g·mL −1 .

Ultrasensitive SERS-Based Immunoassay of Tumor Marker in Serum Using Au–Ag Alloy Nanoparticles and Ag/AgBr Hybrid Nanostructure

Yongfeng Gao,Yuanhui Feng,Lu Zhou,Lucia Petti,Zhe Wang,Jun Zhou,Shusen Xie,Jian Chen,Yanping Qing

Ultrasensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is critical for the early diagnosis of liver cancer. In this work, a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunoassay complex has been successfully developed for the detection of AFP by using the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticals and the Ag/AgBr hybrid nanostructure. As the typical bimetal or metal/semiconductor plasmonic materials, besides the strong SERS enhancement characteristics, the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticals exhibit excellent monodispersity and the Ag/AgBr hybrid nanostructure demonstrates good stability. The experimental results show that the SERS-based immunoassay of AFP presents a low limit of detection of 1.86 fg/mL and a broad dynamic range from 2 fg/mL to 0.8 μ g/mL. Furthermore, the clinical applicability of the proposed SERS-based immunoassay has been assessed by the detection of AFP in the human serum samples of cancer patient and healthy person. The test data are consistent well with that of chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) in the relative errors of − 8.82–8.06% and show better detection sensitivity. It reveals that the proposed immunoassay protocol is significant for giving insight into the design of ultrasensitive biosensor and the point-of-care testing of cancers.
