Highly sensitive flexible pressure sensor based on MXene and NH2-CNTs enhanced sponge structure for human activity monitoring

Weixiao Shan,Yudan Yi,Xinqiu Hong

Multifunctional flexible pressure sensors have garnered significant interest for their potential in health monitoring, electronic skin, and human-machine interfaces. However, sensors fabricated by simple physical blending often suffer from weak interfacial bonding, which leads to the detachment of conductive materials under repeated deformation. To address this issue, we propose an innovative strategy by incorporating aminofunctionalized carbon nanotubes (NH 2 -CNTs) into an MXene/polyurethane (PU) sponge system. Driven by strong electrostatic interactions between NH 2 -CNTs and MXene, a robust and interconnected conductive network is constructed through an electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly process. The resulting MXene/NH 2 -CNTs/PU sponge exhibits remarkable overall performance, featuring high sensitivity (0.387 kPa −1 ), rapid response/recovery times (82/83 ms), a wide detection range (0–55 kPa), an ultralow detection limit (11 Pa), and excellent cyclic stability (>5000 cycles). Benefiting from its wide detection range and high sensitivity, the sensor enables real-time monitoring of diverse physiological signals, from subtle acoustic vibrations of the vocal cords to full-range body movements. Coupled with its facile and low-cost fabrication process, the multifunctional MXene/NH 2 -CNTs/PU sponge sensor paves the way for broad applications in human activity monitoring and beyond.

Zhou Yaqiu,Zhu Linlian,Li Mengwei,Yao Yi,Su Mengjie,Wu Zengqiang,Yu Chunmei

A flexible electrochemical sensing platform on the basis of carbon cloth modified with zeolite imidazole framework-67/carbon nanotubes nanocomposite with catalase-like activity was developed for in situ and real-time tracking of H 2 O 2 produced by living cells. The obtained sensor exhibits excellent electrochemical performance for detecting H 2 O 2 with a broad linear response range from 1 µM to 5.2 mM and a detection limit of 0.3 µM. Owing to the favorable biocompatibility and mechanical stability of the prepared electrodes, living cells can be proliferated well on their surfaces, thereby achieving in situ and real-time profiling of endogenous H 2 O 2 flux from normal and cancer cells. This work proposed a novel sensing platform for extracellular analysis, providing an innovative tool for the dynamic monitoring of biomarkers generated by cellular metabolism in cell biology. Effect of Cobalt-doped Carbon Nanotube Composites (Co/CNTs) on the Properties of High-Energetic Oxidizer DAP-4

Ying Kang,Kaiyuan Sun,Haiting Liu,Jiani Dong,Guoliang Liu,Lianqiang Li,Haixia Zhao,Erhai An,Xiong Cao

(H 2 dabco) [NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] (DAP-4) is a multi-ionic energetic material with strong oxidizing and detonation capabilities, but its high decomposition temperature (380 °C) limits its practical use. Cobalt-doped carbon nanotube composites (Co/CNTs) with different Co loadings (0.05, 0.5, 5 mmol) were hydrothermally prepared. Their morphologies and structures were characterized, and the influence of Co/CNTs-(1-3) on the thermolysis process and combustion performance of DAP-4 was comprehensively examined. Among them, Co/CNTs-2 exhibited the strongest catalytic activity in terms of DAP-4′s thermal decomposition and combustion. It decreased the activation energy by 57.1 kJ/mol and the decomposition temperature by 32.2 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the combustion heat of DAP-4/Co/CNTs-2 was 14947 kJ/kg, which was significantly more than that of DAP-4. The addition of Co/CNTs increased the flame area and intensity of DAP-4 while shortening the flame duration and accelerating the energy release rate.

Hot–water–induced hollow mesoporous SiOx@RF@CNTs composite with dual–carbon modification for lithium–ion battery anodes

Yuju Zhu,Songyuan Sun,Guoqiang Qin,Yue Chen,Shimeng Zhang,Na Fu,Jingbo Chen,Menglan Lv

SiO x is a promising anode for lithium–ion batteries, but practical use is hindered by low conductivity, large volume changes, and unstable interfaces. Here, a mild strategy is reported to fabricate a SiO x @RF@CNTs composite anode with a hollow mesoporous architecture and dual–carbon modification. Mesoporous SiO 2 nanospheres are converted into hollow structures by hot–water treatment, which selectively etches the relatively loose interior through mesoporous channels and enables tuning of particle size and shell thickness without harsh acidic or alkaline etchants. The hollow SiO 2 is then coated with resorcinol–formaldehyde resin and combined with carbon nanotubes to build a conductive network. After thermal treatment in an inert atmosphere, SiO 2 is partially reduced to nonstoichiometric SiO x . XPS depth profiling reveals depth–dependent chemical–state variation during this conversion. Owing to synergistic structural buffering, improved interfacial stability, and enhanced charge transport, the electrode delivers 464.8 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 , with good rate capability and favorable kinetics.

A liquid metal/CNTs/natural rubber composite ink for 3D printing highly conductive, stretchable, and durable wearable sensors

Xu Ji,Wenfa Mao,Zirong Luo,Fangting Mo,Rui Jiang,Yankai Zhao,Le Liu,Jingyi Bai,Shuang Li,Jizhen Zhang,Yanqiu Shao,Jinlong Tao

A LM/CNTs/NRL conductive ink was developed for DIW 3D printing. • SAP-assisted concentration tailors rheology for printable NRL inks. • Printed elastomers show 16.7 S m - ¹ conductivity and 660% stretchability. • Strain sensors achieve a gauge factor up to 28 with wide strain sensing. • Reliable human motion monitoring demonstrated for wearable sensing. The rapid advancement of flexible electronics requires materials that combine high electrical conductivity, good stretchability, and the capability to form complex three-dimensional structures. Direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing has emerged as a promising manufacturing strategy due to its flexibility and programmability. However, the development of high-performance conductive inks remains a pivotal challenge. In this study, we report a novel ternary composite ink composed of liquid metal (LM), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and prevulcanized natural rubber latex (NRL). This formulation effectively suppresses aggregation while establishing additional conductive pathways. Meanwhile, renewable and highly elastic NRL serves as the matrix, and the incorporation of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) beads enables physical concentration, significantly enhancing solid content and yield stress to overcome the inherent rheological limitations of pristine NRL. Systematic characterization reveals that the composite achieves balanced performance for target applications at 30 wt% filler loading, exhibiting a tensile elongation at break of up to 660% and an electrical conductivity of 16.7 S·m⁻¹ , thereby achieving an effective balance between electrical and mechanical properties. Rheological analysis confirms pronounced shear-thinning behavior and rapid structural recovery, ensuring excellent printability. Flexible strain sensors fabricated via DIW using this ink demonstrate high sensitivity, with a maximum gauge factor of 28 achieved at 440–500% strain, which is comparable to or higher than those of previously reported LM-based sensors, as well as a broad detection range of 0–500% strain. This work provides a sustainable and scalable material-process-application framework for high-performance flexible sensors for wearable motion monitoring, while offering a high-value utilization pathway for natural rubber resources.

Beyond Molecular Dispersion: A Molecular-Cone Architecture of Cobalt Phthalocyanine on CNTs for Selective CO2 Electroreduction to Methanol

Wang Jiahao,Teng Rui,Sun Yunshuyu,Zhang Meng,Mao Yuxiang,Ma Ruixue,Wang Kangbo,Lv Hongkun,Zhang Kang,Chen Jiayin,Xia Rongxin,Cheng Jun

Molecularly dispersed cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) on carbon nanotubes can be used as an efficient catalyst for electrochemical CO 2 -to-methanol conversion. However, increasing the CoPc loading to enhance the current density typically induces aggregation, which compromises methanol selectivity. To overcome this limitation, a CNT-supported nitro-substituted CoPc electrocatalyst (nCoPc@CNT) that adopts a distinct molecular-cone configuration was developed in this work, differing from both molecularly dispersed and aggregated structures. Structural analyses confirm that this molecular-cone configuration increases the density of electrochemically accessible sites while maintaining favorable catalytic activity. Combined theoretical and experimental analyses suggest that the molecular-cone architecture establishes an optimized interfacial microenvironment, in which the electric-field enhancement predicted by COMSOL is associated with local K + enrichment and stabilization of the key *CO intermediate. Concurrently, interfacial water structures are reorganized to form a strengthened hydrogen bond network that promotes proton transport and accelerates *CO hydrogenation kinetics, as evidenced by a shortened DRT low-frequency relaxation time. Leveraging this microenvironment, the molecular-cone nCoPc@CNT catalyst achieves a methanol Faradaic efficiency of 64.4% at –0.98 V vs RHE and retains a Faradaic efficiency of 58.4% at 150 mA cm –2 in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell. This work presents a microenvironment-engineering strategy for selective electrochemical CO 2 reduction to methanol via cooperative interfacial tuning.

Hydrophobic sodium alginate/montmorillonite/CNTs composite hydrogel for simultaneous efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation and suppressed salt deposition

Peng Liu,Xian Sun,Xiaobin Gu,Yunan Mu,Hongen Nian

A SA/MMT/CNT hydrogel enables efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation. • MMT regulates water states to promote interfacial water evaporation. • Fluorinated interfacial engineering effectively suppresses salt crystallization. • MD simulations reveal hydrogen-bond evolution and interfacial ion exclusion. Conventional desalination system suffers from high energy consumption and complicated equipment combination. Solar driven interfacial evaporation offers great potential for next-generation desalination since it is only driven by solar energy, and its system efficiency is substantially high. However, achieving a balance of strong light absorption, structural stability and long-term salt tolerance in a single solar evaporator is still a big challenge. This work, therefore, proposes a sodium alginate /montmorillonite/carbon nanotube (SA/MMT/CNTs) composite hydrogel for efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation. By integrating a broadband photothermal CNTs network with low cost and hydroxyl-rich MMT nanosheets, the composite system simultaneously achieves enhanced solar light absorption and accelerated water evaporation. To further improve the anti-salt performance of the prepared composite hydrogel, a hydrophobic surface modification method with silane coupling modification strategy is introduced. And molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide molecular-level insights into the evolution of molecular configuration and hydrogen bond density, ion distribution, thereby revealing the underlying mechanisms responsible for the improved anti-salt performance. The resulting composite hydrogel based solar evaporator delivers an evaporation rate of 1.76 kg m −2  h −1 under one-sun irradiation. In addition, it exhibits excellent long-term stability and strong resistance to salt accumulation under salt solution. Outdoor experiment in Xining City, Qinghai province is preformed to verify the practical potential of the composite hydrogel based solar evaporator. This study provides a low-cost and effective strategy for high-performance solar desalination systems. Download: Download high-res image (372KB) Download: Download full-size image

CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D extracts induce CGRP production in dorsal root ganglion neurons to facilitate osteogenesis in rats

Yun Tang,Jinghan Lin,Tingting Zhao,Lina Sun,Tingjiao Liu

Clinical trials have proven the beneficial effect of biodegradable orthopedic composites on bone repair; however, the mechanisms underlying composite-induced bone formation have not yet been fully explored. AZ91D magnesium alloy coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and calcium phosphate (CaP)/chitosan (CS) (CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D) is a synthetic composite consisting of magnesium alloy, CNTs and CaP/CS. Its extracts induce the production of the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a local neuropeptide that contributes to osteogenic differentiation, in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. This study was aimed at validating the upregulation of CGRP in CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D extract-induced DRG neurons. Besides, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) showed greater osteogenic capacity after co-culture with CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D extract-induced DRG neurons, and this co-culture promoted autophagy in BMSCs to facilitate osteogenic differentiation. The dysregulation of CREB1/TRIM16/JAK1/STAT3 signaling was determined in BMSCs co-cultured with CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D extract-induced DRG neurons. However, all these results were counteracted by the knockdown of the CGRP receptor. In vivo study showed accelerated osteogenesis in the femur of CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D-implanted rats; however, this effect was inhibited by the CGRP receptor antagonist BIBN4096BS. In summary, this study highlights the critical role of the peripheral nervous system in osteogenesis and suggests the potential of CNTs-CaP/CS-AZ91D for improving bone formation in the future.

Highly Sensitive and Stretchable MXene/CNTs/TPU Composite Strain Sensor with Bilayer Conductive Structure for Human Motion Detection

Hui Dong,Jingchao Sun,Xingmin Liu,Xiaodan Jiang,Shaowei Lu

The universal application of wearable strain sensors in various situations for human-activity monitoring is considerably limited by the contradiction between high sensitivity and broad working range. There still remains a huge challenge to design sensors featuring simultaneous broad working range and high sensitivity. Herein, a typical bilayer-conductive structure Ti3C2Tx MXene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite film was developed by a simple and scalable vacuum filtration process utilizing a porous electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) mat as a skeleton. The MXene/CNTs/TPU strain sensor is composed of two parts: a brittle densely stacked MXene upper lamella and a flexible MXene/CNT-decorated fibrous network lower layer. Benefiting from the synergetic effect of the two parts along with hydrogen-bonding interactions between the porous TPU fiber mat and MXene sheets, the MXene/CNTs/TPU strain sensor possesses both a broad working range (up to 330%) and high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 2911) as well as superb long-term durability (2600 cycles under the strain of 50%). Finally, the sensor can be successfully employed for human movement monitoring, from tiny facial expressions, respiration, and pulse beat to large-scale finger and elbow bending, demonstrating a promising and attractive application for wearable devices and human–machine interaction.

Constructing dimensional gradient structure of Na3V2(PO4)3/C@CNTs-WC by wolfram substitution for superior sodium storage

Shiqi Sun,Yanjun Chen,Jun Cheng,Zeyi Tian,Chao Wang,Guangping Wu,Changcheng Liu,Yanzhong Wang,Li Guo

Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) has gained enormous attentions due to the high capacity and voltage platform. Nevertheless, poor intrinsic electronic conductivities severely restrict the further development. Herein, a feasible strategy to construct unique dimensional gradient structure of the wolfram doped NVP is proposed via a facile sol–gel method. The introduction of W 6+ with the smaller ionic radius parallelized with local V 3+ ions could stabilize the open NASICON structure of NVP and generate vast of beneficial holes to accelerate the electronic transportation. Notably, the wolfram can combine with the superfluous carbon layer and form the new conductive WC phase to further promote the electronic conductivity. Meanwhile, the coated carbon layers and enwrapped CNTs construct an effective conductive framework for accelerated electronic migration. The twining CNTs promote to inhibit the growth of the sintered grains, reducing the particle size to provide shortened pathway for the migration of Na + . Distinctively, the modified Na 2.97 V 2.99 W 0.019 (PO 4 ) 3 /C@CNTs (W0.01-NVP) composite delivers a superior electrochemical performance. Significantly, it can submit a high reversible capability of 112.5 mAh g −1 at 5C with retaining 86% initial capacity over 500 cycles. As for a super high rate of 50C, it reveals an incredible capacity of 92.6 mAh g −1 and remains 84.5 mAh g −1 over 400 cycles, corresponding to a high retention of 91.30%. The superior electrochemical performance is derived from the enhanced crystal structure resulted from wolfram substitution and the beneficial dimensional conductive system consisting of new WC phase, coated carbon layers and enwrapped CNTs.

Suitable lithium polysulfides diffusion and adsorption on CNTs@TiO2-bronze nanosheets surface for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Zhen Mengmeng,Jiang Keliang,Guo Sheng-Qi,Shen Boxiong,Liu Huiling

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) has been hampered their commercialization. Metal oxides as separator modifications can suppress the shuttle effect. Since there is no direct electron transport between metal oxides and LiPSs, absorbed LiPSs should be diffused from the surface of metal oxides to the carbon matrix to go through redox reactions. If diffusivity of LiPSs from metal oxides surface to carbon substrate is poor, it would hinder the redox reactions of LiPSs. Nevertheless, researchers tend to focus on the adsorption and overlook the diffusion of LiPSs. Herein, same morphology and different crystal phase of TiO 2 nanosheets grown on carbon nanotubes (CNTs@TiO 2 -bronze and CNTs@TiO 2 -anatase) have been designed via a simple approach. Compared with CNTs and CNTs@TiO 2 -anatase composites, the battery with CNTs@TiO 2 -bronze modified separator delivers higher specific capacities and stronger cycling stability, especially at high current rates (∼ 472 mAh·g −1 at 2.0 C after 1,000 cycles). Adsorption tests, density functional theory calculations and electrochemical performance evaluations indicate that suitable diffusion and adsorption for LiPSs on the CNTs@TiO 2 -B surface can effectively capture LiPSs and promote the redox reaction, leading to the superior cycling performances.

An In2O3 nanowire-like network fabricated on coplanar sensor surface by sacrificial CNTs for enhanced gas sensing performance

Sheng Yi,Shouqin Tian,Dawen Zeng,Keng Xu,Shunping Zhang,Changsheng Xie

Metal oxide quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) nanostructures have a very good gas-sensing performance due to their large surface area and porous structures with a less agglomerated configuration. However, the well-designed fragile nanostructures could be easily destroyed during the conventional fabrication process of gas sensors. Herein, we presented a novel materials-sensor integration fabrication strategy: on basis of screen printing (SP) technology and calcination , micro-injecting (MI) was introduced into the fabrication process of sensors, which was named as SPMIC, to obtain In 2 O 3 nanowire-like network directly on the surface of coplanar sensors array by structure replication from sacrificial carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The obtained In 2 O 3 nanowire-like network exhibited an excellent response (electrical resistance ratio R a / R g ), about 63.5, for100   ppm formaldehyde at 300   °C, which was about 30 times larger than that of compact In 2 O 3 nanoparticles film (non-network film). The enhanced gas-sensing properties were mainly attributed to the high surface-to-volume ratio and the nanoscopic structural properties of materials. Furthermore, the SPMIC could be employed not only in the preparation of other metal oxide nanowire-like network, but also in the fabrication of coplanar gas sensors arrays on the required sites with different materials.
