There is a wide variety of Lanxangia tsaoko (LT) fruit shapes, and there has been no systematic characterization of the chemical composition of the fruit shapes and their functions. In this study, a comprehensive comparison of the three fruit shapes of LT was carried out from the macroscopic to the microscopic level. The results showed that the redder and longer LT had a stronger aroma and that the formation of aroma was closely related to flavonoids and phenolic acids. In addition, flavonoids and their synthesis pathways were the main reasons for the differences among the three fruit shapes. In terms of flavor, the ROAV values of 2-nonenal, ( E )-2-octenal, ( E )-2-dodecenal, and ( E )- were much higher than those of the other volatiles, and they were the most dominant aroma components in LT. After that, a support vector machine model based on fourier transforms near infrared spectroscopy was developed for fast identification of different fruit types of LT. The best performance of the model was achieved after second-order derivative preprocessing with 100% correctness. The final correlation analysis illustrated the interpretability between metabolites and spectral features in LT and provided theoretical guidance for the development of non-destructive, efficient, and low-cost techniques.

A porous gelatin-gum/poly(lipoic acid) aerogel functioned as a structural skeleton. • In-situ synthesis achieved high-loading Ag/Ag 2 S with 95.27% encapsulation efficiency. • The composite aerogel enabled efficient synergistic ethylene adsorption and degradation. • Non-contact aerogel platform significantly extended the shelf life of various fruits. Postharvest spoilage of fruits, driven by ethylene-induced ripening and senescence, represents a major challenge to global food systems. Conventional ethylene control technologies, primarily relying on physical adsorption or chemical scavenging, struggle to simultaneously achieve high adsorption capacity and efficient catalytic degradation. Unlike physical blending or impregnation, this study developed a multifunctional aerogel by first constructing a porous, hydrophobic, and UV-barrier aerogel skeleton from a gelatin-gum (GG) complex cross-linked with poly(lipoic acid) (PLA), followed by the photocatalytic in-situ synthesis of uniformly dispersed Ag/Ag 2 S heterojunction nanoparticles, thereby achieving coupled adsorption-photocatalysis synergy at the nanoscale. Structural characterizations confirmed that Ag ions were partially reduced to metallic Ag within the gelatin-gum/poly(lipoic acid) (GG/PLA) skeleton under simulated sunlight, forming a uniformly dispersed Ag/Ag 2 S composite system. Performance evaluation revealed that the aerogel's three-dimensional porous network facilitated efficient ethylene diffusion and enrichment, while the Ag/Ag 2 S heterojunction promoted charge separation, enabling dynamic adsorption-photocatalysis synergy. Notably, at the PLA:Ag molar ratio of 1:1, the composite aerogel synergized its high ethylene adsorption with efficient photocatalytic activity, achieving approximately 95.21% ethylene removal within 24 h. It also demonstrated excellent thermal stability and encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, applied as a non-contact platform, it effectively maintained the quality and extended the shelf life of both tomatoes and strawberries. This work establishes a design paradigm that couples ethylene adsorption with photocatalytic degradation for intelligent preservation. Grapholita molesta is a major fruit tree pest. Host plant volatiles act as chemical cues to mediate female oviposition. This study investigated the recognition of ovipositing G. molesta females for pear volatile blends based on age-dependent olfactory plasticity. Results showed that mated females exhibited a distinct reproduction–flight coordination window optimized at 2 days of age. Olfactory gene expression in female antennae depended on the postmating age. Nine odorant receptor (OR) genes were upregulated at 3 vs. 9 days postmating (DPM), with stronger antennal responses to trace-level odorants. RNA interference targeting ORs, especially GmolOR46, reduced antennal responses and oviposition preference at 3 DPM. Mature pears emitted more volatiles than apples, especially after mechanical injury. Females at 3 DPM were attracted to volatiles from intact or injured mature pears, particularly at high concentrations. They increased field moth catches. Our findings reveal that pear volatiles have potential as attractants for G. molesta.

Enhanced R-CDs@Pr-MOF nanocomposite-embedded electrospun film was developed. • A superior hierarchical sensing system through lanthanide MOF medicated R-CDs. • Multifunctional Pr-MOF filler improved physical properties of packaging film. • Smartphone-assisted monitoring platform with self-developed APP was developed. • The S RGB of spinning film showed an excellent correlation with quality parameters. Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs)-based stimuli-responsive materials exhibited considerable promise for real-time monitoring of food quality and safety, but their poor stability and reliance on single-color changes have limited their broader application. Herein, red-emitting CDs (R-CDs) were immobilized onto Pr-based metal-organic framework (Pr-MOF) through electrostatic interactions. The Pr-MOF served as an adsorption scaffold for R-CDs while also contributing to the enhanced fluorescence responsiveness of the composite. Afterward, the R-CDs@Pr-MOF nanomaterial was incorporated into a blended matrix of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to fabricate spinning film responsive to sulfur-based gases. The incorporation of R-CDs@Pr-MOF into the PVDF/PVP matrix moderately improved the water resistance while enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the film. Importantly, the film exhibits a clear multicolor evolution in response to analyte, effectively overcoming the single-color limitation. The MOF effectively also mitigates the comprehensive performance deficiencies of R-CDs in the packaging film. Finally, a linear correlation equation between the S RGB -value of the MOFs-based film and the quality parameters of packaged durian was established using a self-developed APP (Optimal group equation: y = (0.101 ± 0.002) x + (32.365 ± 0.753); R 2 = 0.9924; LOD: 0.086–0.836; RSD: 1.91%). Hence, utilizing digital sensing platform in conjunction with dual-channel light response mode, a powerful approach for the rapid assessment of multiple quality parameters of packaged fruits was developed. Moreover, the R-CDs@Pr-MOF material facilitates accurate and non-invasive monitoring of fruit freshness, enhancing the precision and safety of intelligent packaging systems. Pesticides are often overused in production and life, which harms the environment and human health. However, the current tools for detecting pesticides are not effective enough due to lower flexibility and stability. With regards to this, we synthesized a flexible substrate of PDMS modified by MXene (Ti 3 C 2 Tx)/Ag. The MXene-noble metal composite substrate can detect 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA) at a low concentration of 1.0 × 10 −11 M. Furthermore, MXene can inhibit the oxidation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and efficiently localize the molecules to be tested within the hot spots. In particular, the flexibility of the substrate enables the detection of trace amounts of thiabendazole (TBZ) by collecting samples directly from uneven surfaces such as fruits and vegetables. The substrate is also capable of detecting a mixture of TBZ and 4MBA simultaneously. Using intrinsic Raman peak of PDMS as the internal standard can eliminate the influence of environmental factors on the detection results, which makes the detection results more quantitative. The resultant noble metal-semiconductor substrates show great potential applications in food safety and environmental monitoring fields.

Monoclinic Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LVP) fulfills safety requirements including superior chemical and thermal stabilities since the oxygen atoms are firmly anchored in PO 4 3− units, however the low intrinsic electronic conductivity strictly limits its electrochemical performance . Herein, to overcome this problem, a rationally designed passion fruit-like LVP@C/CNT composite constructed with LVP grains as seeds, carbon matrix as pulp, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as filaments, has been prepared via a facile spray pyrolysis method. In such unique biomimetic structure, carbon matrix encases LVP to reduce its particle size, which is beneficial to shorten ion pathways; Porous structure scattered around carbon matrix facilitates the rapid penetration of electrolyte; 3D CNT networks afford high-speed electron conduction and remarkable structural stability by forming the bridges between LVP grains. Owing to the multiple merits of this biomimetic structure, the rationally designed LVP@C/CNT composite with 3 wt% CNT exhibits high reversible capacity, superior cyclic stability and remarkable rate capability.

Chitosan (CS) is an excellent raw material for the preparation of food packaging films due to its good film-forming properties, non-toxicity, and biodegradability . However, pure chitosan films have drawbacks such as weak mechanical properties and limited antimicrobial activity . In this work, novel food packaging films containing chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) were successfully prepared. The PVA served to improve the mechanical properties of the chitosan-based films, whilst the porous g-C 3 N 4 acted as a photocatalytically-active antibacterial agent. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) of the g-C 3 N 4 /CS/PVA films both increased by ~4 times compared to the pristine CS/PVA films at the optimum g-C 3 N 4 loading of ~10 wt%. The addition of g-C 3 N 4 increase the water contact angle (WCA) of the films from 38° to 50°, whilst decreasing the water vapor permeability (WVP) from 160 × 10 −12 to 135 × 10 −12 g∙Pa −1 s −1 m −1 . The shelf life of strawberries covered with g-C 3 N 4 /CS/PVA films at room temperature could be extended up to 96 h, compared to 48 h and 72 h for strawberries covered with polyethylene (PE) films or CS/PVA films, respectively. The g-C 3 N 4 /CS/PVA films offered good antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Further, the composite films could be easily recycled with the regenerated films offering almost identical mechanical properties and activities as the original films. The prepared g-C 3 N 4 /CS/PVA films thus offer promise for low-cost antimicrobial packaging applications.

Mei (Prunus mume) is widely planted in Eastern Asian countries. To evaluate the effect of cultivar and producing origin on the quality of Mei fruit, we studied the phytochemical properties and antioxidant activities of the 16 Mei fruit cultivars from 6 provinces in China, as well as their profiles of 121 volatile compounds, 5 organic acids, 13 minerals, 24 amino acids and 3 active peptides. Multivariate analysis revealed that the four Mei fruit cultivars with a drier climate in Yunnan province had the characteristics of low water moistures and proteins contents, high total acids, soluble solids, flavones, and phenols contents, and high antioxidant activities, which could be distinguished from fruits of other producing areas. Further component analysis showed that Mei fruits were rich in volatile compounds, organic acids (such as citric acid and malic acid), minerals (such as K, Ca, Mg, P, and Fe), and amino acids (such as Orn, Asn, and Asp), and the nutrient composition ratio in different cultivars was different. In conclusion, Mei fruits can be used as nutritious health food and different cultivars focus on different nutritional compositions.

To assess the effect of the digestive system on the phenolics and antioxidant capacity of Lycium barbarum fruit, its extract was digested and analyzed in vitro . The results revealed that the phenolics/flavonoids contents and antioxidant capacity in the pH-treated group and digested group generally decreased by 4.39%–21.22% in the oral and intestinal digestions but increased by 1.26%–16.14% in the gastric digestion. The phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were highly correlated in digested groups ( r > 0.899, p < 0.01). Five main phenolics including rutin , p -coumaric acid and its hexoside derivatives were identified and quantified, and these phenolics displayed higher stability during the digestion, implying that they may be the potential functional phenolics of L. barbarum fruit.

Due to the soft texture of strawberry fruit, it is highly susceptible to mechanical damage during postharvest supply chains, resulting in decay and quality deterioration. Urgent investigation is needed on the treatment techniques to mitigate the impact of postharvest mechanical damage of strawberry fruit. In the present study, the effect of indirect plasma-processed air (PPA) pretreatment to decrease decay and microbiota of strawberry fruit caused by mechanical damage was investigated. The results show PPA pretreatment reduced the total counts of indigenous microbiota on the surface of intact and mechanical damaged strawberry fruit by 4.29 and 3.76 log 10 CFU/g at day 0, respectively, and reduced the counts of S. aureus and E. coli inoculated on strawberry fruit by 3.05–3.16 and 3.55–3.56 log 10 CFU/g, respectively. The disease incidence of fruit inoculated with Botrytis cinerea was also decreased by 6.67 %–18.89 % during storage. Besides, PPA pretreatment reduced the decay rate of strawberry fruit by 5.56 %–21.11 % during storage and did not significantly affect the firmness, color index of red grapes (CIRG) and total soluble solids (TSS) content of strawberry fruit. DHHP results indicate that the antioxidant activity of the strawberry fruit was increased. After PPA pretreatment, 39 metabolites were differentially accumulated in strawberry fruits, 37 of which were up-regulated, including flavonoids, phenolic acids and organic acid.

Background: Propionibacterium acnes causes upregulation of inflammatory factors, such as cycloxygenase-2, prostaglandin E2, interleukin-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inward flow of calcium ions. This causes increased levels of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and inflammation of the skin, leading to redness, swelling, itching and other symptoms. Schisandra chinensis fruit oil (SCO) is rich in lignan active ingredients with various antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Methods: In this study, SCO is obtained by supercritical CO2 fluid extraction. SCO’s anti-inflammatory actions were investigated using P. acnes-induced inflammation HaCaT cells model. A method based on reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography with a diode array detector was developed and validated for the simultaneous detection of five lignan components. Levels of inflammatory factors and LL-37 were measured by ELISA kit and western blot respectively. Ca2+ and ROS levels detected by flow cytometry. Results: The experimental results show that the contents of schisanol A, schisanol B, schisanin A, schisanin B, and schisanin C were 33.89 ± 0.24, 14.89 ± 0.45, 8.92 ± 0.02, 29.14 ± 0.67, and 4.74 ± 0.09 mg/g, respectively. Studies have demonstrated that SCO can alleviate skin inflammation by inhibiting the COX-2/PGE2 and NF-κB signalling pathway. In addition, SCO can inhibit ROS production, significantly block inward Ca2+ flow, alleviate cell damage, and modulate the content of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37. Conclusions: In summary, our study elucidated the anti-inflammatory activity of SCO in a cell model and provided a scientific basis for its application as a raw material in skin care.

Excessive solar radiation and high temperature often cause considerable loss and waste of fruits during transportation, retail, and storage. In the current study, a natural deep eutectic solvent-based polyacrylamide/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with nanoparticles (NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA) is developed for fruit quality protection from solar radiation and high-temperature stress by achieving the combined effect of radiative and evaporative cooling. NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA presents an average solar reflectance of ∼0.89 and an average emittance at the atmospheric window of ∼0.90. Besides, NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA possesses excellent flexibility, robust mechanical strength, and good swelling behavior. The fruit preservation experiments under sunlight demonstrate that the pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis) treated with NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA can achieve an average temperature decrease of ∼15.3 °C after sun exposure compared with the blank, and its quality-related attributes, including color, total soluble solid, relative conductivity, and respiration rate, are similar to the fresh one. Multivariate data analyses, including principal component analysis and cluster analysis, further verify that the pear treated with NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA possesses similar quality to the fresh one after sun exposure. Thus, NPs/NADES@PAAm/PVA has promising prospects for fruit transportation, retail, and storage under solar radiation in a low-operation-cost and sustainable manner.
